Jason's backup vocal in this are otherworldly. Underrated bassist and vocalist. Must have been difficult trying to fill Cliffs enormous shoes.

Bringing back memories here! Took my new girlfriend of less than a month to see this tour in Dec. '88 at the Cow Palace in SF. She was a Journey, INXS type fan and I was worried this would be too much for her. I had seen Metallica first at Day On The Green in Oakland in 1985, then again on the Puppets tour, so I knew this had the potential to be a tough sell. She hung in there like a veteran, down on the floor. Immediately, I knew she was a keeper. We were married in '89, and 35 years later, we're still together and have seen Metallica countless times. Good times...

I don’t recommend Pantera at all with the exception of ‘Cemetery Gates’. It’s the only song of theirs with any melody; everything else I’ve heard just strikes me as ‘redneck metal’. It’s not a cultural group one should be proud to belong to, if they belong to it.

Awesome that you listened to the studio version first! This is a great live version for sure, audio is good and its still at a high point in their career. Always do the studio first though, its how we all heard the song for the first time and its how the artist intended it as well. It makes the follow-up react to an epic live performances that much better as well because you have the original to compare it too.

They are in a class by themselves - watching your reactions is giving me serious flashbacks. Love it.

If you want more recommendations for Metallica live reactions, then you might consider "No Leaf Clover" - the original version from 1999. This song has no studio version - it was only ever recorded live with symphonic orchestra and released on their live album along with all the other tracks recorded with the orchestra during their live performances. There is a whole double DVD of this show and this is where the video is from. I am specifying the original version from 1999 because Metallica has quite recently went on another tour with the orchestra and there is another recording and of this song so it is very easy to get confused. I think that I like the 1999 a bit more.

I had backstage passes (I was a musician in Seattle 88-94, and my best friend was a sound engineer) and when they started Enter Sandman I was standing at the soundboard with Mick Hughes, the crowd from all the seats rushed the stage, pulling up and stacking the chairs, total chaos near riot...it was awesome.

Getting to see Metallica this night was the most epic and insane concert experience of my life. I've seen them 10 more times after this show. They're amazing every time. The energy exchange flowing back and forth between Metallica and us this night felt almost supernatural. It was a barely controlled riot from the jump to the end. That Seattle’s show in 1989 is probably the best concert footage we have of Metallica in their absolute prime. The set list is great, the band is fucking relentless and they play for something like 2 1/2 hours - almost 3. if you want to compare any songs from their first four albums to their live performances of those same songs, I would strongly recommend that you refer to that one concert, and you can be guaranteed it’s them at their very best.

I still have my original box set of this concert series called Live Shit Binge and Purge which was a mashup of multiple concerts. Metallica is one of those bands that are badass in the studio but in another level live. This song is about Moses and the Passover. You hear him tell the story of the Creeping Death. During the Passover Jews would sacrifice a lamb and paint blood over their doorways to cause the Angel of death to pass over their homes as they’re faithful.

Regardless of whether you prefer live over studio, there are many live versions over the decades that change in all styles of their playing and his singing that don't sound any where near as good as the studio, especially if you picked a random show from who knows where or when! lol Best to do studio first then the most requested or suggested live versions - that would be the best, do others after that perhaps for garnish??

You have to hear the thing that should not be live in Seattle. It’s almost a paranormal experience with the pure energy of the performance. Really any song from that concert is amazing but that performance is so raw and heavy. And also you said you’re a sucker for solos and that is by far the best one off master of puppets
