- For me this Metallica journey so far has been one of the best musical journeys I have ever been on. I know a lot of people aren't fans of the Black album but from what I have heard so far, I have got to admit, I am really enjoying it. My favourite Metallica song is Wherever I May Roam and that is on the Black Album. I guess It may have been different If I was there to experience the change of their music but personally, I don't have a problem with it. I think it's great.
Here is my reaction to hearing Metallica - Sad But True for the first time. I hope you enjoy it.

*This is the album some said Metallica were sell outs. Their reply?? "Yes, we sell out. We sell out every seat in the house every time we play." Some just wanted Metallica to make every song and every album repeats of Master of Puppets and And justice for all. But those aren't real fans so don't pay attention to the haters.* 🤘🤘🤘
As if they themselves would have taken the same path.... i think people mistake Metallica as a heavy metal band.... personally while some of it was metal i would say Metallica is more of a really heavy Rock band. There isnt 1 album that i dont NOT like. Their sound has changed butthey have stayed relevant you dont hear many AC/DC songs iron maiden or Pantera songs being played on the airpeople who are small minded and or music snobs are gonna hate.sucks for them is all i can say.
"Wall to wall and I still ain't sold out."
-- Hardy
@@bigbigjohnlee666 One of the seminal thrash bands. Not a metal band, he says...
There's a reason why the black album still sells 1,000 copies a week, 30 years after it came out. Fuck the haters, do the whole black album, you won't be sad you did
there is a reason why Doja Cat sells too. most people arent musicians, a highly technical band like Metallica had to dumb their music down to reach the mainstream audience. the black album was a sell out album. selling out is compromising your art for the sole purpose to make more money. yeah it sells great. the majority love it, musicians and true fans of Metallica hate they did this..
@@corrob You dare compare (insert any commercial rap sh17) to the Black Album? That's cold, dude. If metal bands took evolving their style as "selling out", we wouldn't be here listening to it as metal would have remained a fringe thing that died out decades ago.
I seriously hope you're not one of those self proclaimed purist fan guys who yell slurs at the band during concerts next to people actually genuinely there to enjoy it.
@@corrobI used to think the same way but as I get older I realize "selling out" usually coordinates with age. They didn't really "sell out" as much as they matured. They got big enough where they were able to get some top notch production and refine their sound to something more clean and consistent than their earlier thrashers. I think Metallica is special because they've given us a wide variety of music styles to choose from to fit almost any mood.
Look at Slayer, Kerry King never really grew out of his chug chug chug with the same damn guitar tone in every single song for decades. Is that what you really want every band to be? Just a rehash of previous albums over and over again? Be careful what you wish for, sometimes "selling out" is the best thing that can happen to a band.
@wardibald 💯 Agreed! Well said sir 👏 I agree!! Love ♥️ the Black album!!
Black album save the rock music at that time and become mainstream, along with a Nirvana's nevermind, Pearl Jam's Ten etc...
This album is still in the top 200 Billboard, 31 years later. That's unprecedented in metal history
I love seeing youngsters discovering/hearing/seeing amazing music for the first time. I’m actually jealous, I miss that feeling the first time I heard Metallica
Me too there isn't too many bands I can connect with like I could back then
People have a weird hangup with Metallica. Metallica achieved a massive level of success without any radio airplay or a music video from their 1st 3 albums. They were an underground sensation that eventually made a music video and became the biggest band on the planet. When this happened people acted like Metallica was stolen away from them, like they were destined to play small clubs forever. Get over it!
It can't be good if it's popular. I only listen to good music, which can only be underground or niche/obscure... Weird musical snobbery.
Never. Apologise. For. Your. Content.
You rock dude 🤘
Yes Black Album is a Masterpiece.
“Do you want heavy? ‘Tallica gives you heavy…” 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Cunning Stunts
@@justbenelson and later as well starting almost every life performance of the song Sad But True
That drum sound has yet to be surpassed to this day by anyone imo 😍🤤
Metallica has a fan gatekeeping problem and this is the album where it really started because the black album is a great album that crossed over into the mainstream and got a new generation of fans that hadnt yet discovered their older stuff. It was their turning point into being massive everywhere. It happens to every super successful band from the Beatles onward. Like what you like. The band despises gatekeepers.
This album is a masterpiece!!
Agree. Black album, despite what the haters say, has a bunch of great tunes
I love watching James play guitar. He just makes it look effortless.
Rewind all you want it's Metallica
Sad but true= banger
I agree 💯 ❤ it. The stuck in the time warp have entered the chat!
One of the greatest metal riffs ever!!!! Can't wait
who says that dont like black album are posers... this is the master piece of heavy music, broke into mainstream and made metal huge in the 90's. metallica is the shit
"The day that never comes" by Metallica would blow your mind I promise you! One of my favourites man, would love to see your reaction. Love it dude!
I agree ☝️
official video is a must!! Very intense!
I feel the Live version 09 Nimes France is Way better than the video. For one the video isn't what the songs originally about. So it's conflicting for me. But Live is better, I saw them preform it Aug 2023...perfectly! 💯
Yes on that album the 4th, 5th ,6th, 7th songs in a row is awesome
Check out "Spit out the bone" and "Here comes revenge" off the Hardwired album, they kick arse
Best front man to ever do it. These boys melt your face everytime they turn one out.
"YOU WANT HEAVY? METALLICA GIVES YOU HEAVYY--BABBYYYY"
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Completely 🔥. This has to be in the debate of greatest Metallica songs.
I don't ever hate on this record. The change took us all by surprise, the slower tempo took an adjustment but it shouldn't have. Metallica said it from the beginning. Kill em All and Ride the Lightning doesn't define that band and they said so at the time. Kirk always said don't get used to this sound. We are experimenting with all heavy music. And...
Fantastic record.
I just discovered you yesterday mang. Watching the genuine emotions this music puts you through is also emotional for me somehow. I laugh. I cry. And knowing what's coming gives everything a sense of anticipation, wondering how it's going to hit you. I'm along for the ride brother. What a trip
The Black Album Snare is a GUNSHOT!!!
I saw an interview with Lars where he said this song was written in 1985. Remember now since this album came out in 1991 and took over a year to record all these songs were written in the 80s.
Mollyboy yo-the ppl ragging on the black album are the old school fans who didn’t want the band to evolve. Plus as Met grew & changed they attracted more fans, so the old school fans were pissed that Metallica wasn’t their little secret, their hidden gem anymore. So these fans turned against the band and discounted everything after the first four albums.
I didn’t discover Met until 1993, so AJFA and the black album first, and then went back for the rest of their catalog. Like you, I didn’t understand the hate (and never bought into it) because I hadn’t lived through Metallica’s underground years. Fans must face the fact that elitism doesn’t pay the bill for bands-they work fucking hard to succeed and should enjoy their success. I will say that im not as appreciative of their ensuing output, but that’s mostly because my tastes were evolving too-to technical post hardcore & progressive death metal.
To each their own.
Ive been a die hard since 85 or 86 when yes they were underground but BUT i evolved with them and therfore love every album theyve cut. And as far as their cover song they decide to do JMO i think they do a better job than the original artist.
Yessss, man. THAT's a banger. I'm pretty sure, you liked this one.
The snare drum on the black album is epic. It will haunt you
Awww Sad but true is one of my all time favourite Metallica songs! those drums and the bass and that awesome guitar solo 🎸😍 I first heard it when I was 15 and it’s still played loud and proud at 48 🤘🏻🤘🏻 F’n love it ❤❤❤
Every Metallica album is so good! Even St. Anger.... when I need it.
metallica is in the league of their own.....timeless
I love Metallica! I have a great story for you. When my nephew was a teenager, his favorite thing to say to his friends was, "My Grandma is so cool; she likes Metallica!" My mom is 77, and she can identify any Metallica song just by listening to the beginning.
I forgot how much this track gives me full body goosebumps ...love the Black Album 👍 👏
I'm honestly not the biggest fan of Metallica, but i have always liked the Black album. So glad you are liking this genre of music. Anytime you enjoy music, it doesn't matter the genre. If you like it, that's wonderful. I was lucky to get into rock/metal from an early age due to my dad and i am forever grateful. I have also branched into other music like you are doing now, so please enjoy the ride. Love from Australia ❤️❤️❤️.
This was from another seminal album for them. One of the best selling albums in history. Not my personal favorite but a solid piece of work. People will moan how they went mainstream or “sold out” but like Metallica said, people have said that even since RTL and regardless of what some think, Metallica always made the music they wanted to make even after the black album. I respect that.
Well said!! 💯 right!
💯...how long is a band supposed to stay on the underground scene and live in a rat hole on ramen and jelly sandwiches? At some point the money these artists deserve after giving their talent away in clubs and dive bars can only be made on radio play and album sales that lead to sold out arenas and merch sales. Metallica has always said in interviews that they play and write what they enjoy and if you dig it great and if you don't no problem.
They evolved, the game changed and they changed with it, I imagine most first 4 only fans haven’t evolved and still live with their mom.
Classic album, the production was lightning in a bottle. Thank you for the reaction.
Yeah...those drums, man... Just sounds so massive.
This Album set new standards in how a heavy Rock/Metal Album has to sound like. This and 'Empire' by Queensryche. Just crystal clear, full sounding production.
Bob Rock for ya mate
The last few Meshuggah albums have been pretty decent
They were 28 and 29 yrs of age here. Jason Newstead is on bass and backing vocals. He was a Beast. This song hits hard. I love the Riff and the white Tama drum kit is my favorite!! ❤ they were so young! Enjoy 😉
I'm 41 and black album James will always feel older than me.
@@justbenelsonthis 😂 im 29 now and I look at myself being atleast 10 years younger than this James
Wish I was hearing this for the first time like he is. I remember being 14 hearing this and then seeing them in concert. Blown away.
My favorite Metallica album is the Black Album also 🖤
My favourite Metallica song,,,, well one of them. They sing it at most shows and they kill it every single time. Great reaction!!!!
This is MetallicA's best live song it sounds awesome every time.
The riff is so heavy! 🔥 🤘
I'm not a huge fan of late era Metallica but the Black Album is still fire.
Have you heard their latest 2 albums tho? Lots of them feel like old Metallica!
This album is a masterpiece
My youngest son loves the black album and when I took him to see them live and this song came on he went nuts. He was 17 at the time and I’ll never forget watching him at that concert. Greatest mom moment ever for sure!
First 5 Albums are fire!!!
The audio engineering on this album is just nuts, it's on another level. The drums, vocals, guitar and bass fill the entire place. It feels like the music is coming from all directions. I fucking love this band and this album. And to hell with all the subs that complain about what bands you feature, do more Metallica!!
In my early 20's when the Black album came out. Won tickets from a radio station in Phoenix and my husband and I got to be in the "Snake Pit" which was in the center of the stage. What an amazing experience. They sound as good live as their recordings. Never forget it!😂🎉
This was the Album made me Fall In ❤️❤️❤️with metal Music….I was 9…and they were my FIRST CONCERT
The Black Album is Metallica's Magnum Opus. And Sad But True was this album's crowning achievement.
I have seen Metallica live 3 times and hearing this live is EPIC. This is just so dirty and hard. When those guitars come in with that sledgehammer of a drum beat it just makes me snarl. One of my favourites.
You should check out S&M, Metallica with Michael Kamen and the SanFran Symphony. Amazing and really worth a look and hearing this song with a full orchestra plus Metallica is mind blowing !
I love how much you loved it. Thanks for giving it a listen.
Its the little things aesthetically too. James has the best power stance in metal...it looks tough af!
@ 11:50 I didn't like this album when it came out in 91 either, but I was your age in 91, 23. As I grew older, I started to warm to The Black Album. I started to love it so much, I actually had a witch doctor reverse the voodoo hex I put on Bob Rock.
One of their best songs ever. That freaking riff man...
I bought the CD as soon as it came out and it lived in my Discman for many weeks.
This album is the reason Metallica is the most successful Metal artist.
I still remember the first time i heard this, in (the now long gone) XL's rock club in Birmingham. I was 17, and i was hooked. Even 30-odd years on it still sells thousands of copies, and i still play it regularly. Great album.
The Black Album is a great album, period!!! People who comprehend Metallica is not just a genre (thrash metal) know that.
i love the black album , i bought it the day it came out, i was 20 , records back then were officially released at midnight , so we lined up at the record store
I was there, stage left, when they filmed this video in San Diego, and it was wild, with a hundred cameras all over the place and dudes losing their sh*t and moshing on the concourses lol. They played two nights in San Diego, they filmed them both, and those shows eventually became the "Live Shit: Binge & Purge" box set. It was amazing, I'll never forget it.
This song has been in my top 10 since '91. They are INCREDIBLE live!!!! ❤❤
Many a metal guitar player have said hetfields tone on this song is the holy grail of metal tones. It is tuned down a whole step but it is absolutely crushing.
I love the black album....every song is a banger...its less aggressive than justice for all but just as amazing. Metallica owns
Sesk n destroy
Hey MB, these guys don’t disappoint live. The Black album is what got me into Metallica. My favorite along with And Justice For All.
Tool is also great to see live as well.
1991 Black Album was a shock to my husband but he relented and loves it. I think Load and Reload gave him a heart attack and it grew on him. Looking forward to you hearing Breadfan:) one of my faves
I love the Black album. It was the album I got introduced to Metallica with. It’s 🔥🤟🏼 this song is sick!
Everyone in this band is the man!
I was 14 when the black album came out. My musical world has never been the same since.
Did the Black Album is fucking killer. Especially for a hip hop fan. So many funky fat riffs and beats
I agree with everythnig you said. I love this album
I played the black album on repeat on my way to work for 3 years. Every song is fire.
Mollyboy you're right. Music is all about taste. You love it. That makes it right. 👍
Bro. This is YOUR channel. You do you. I’m here with you regardless. Also can I just say I love how you advocate for yourself. Don’t let these mfers tell you shit.
played this song with my cover band at a birthday party, very good memory
When it comes to METALLICA-THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A SELL OUT! They rock and do not look back!! I’m with guy who said “Fuck the Haters”!! Definitely LIT!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
For me the Black album is one of the best Metallica albums.I was 12 when it came out,and it played everywhere,I mean everywhere.Every radio station played it..I've been a Metallica fan since then and now many many years later my kids are huge Metallica fans🤘 Love your reaction videos!!
Still trips me out to see someone that never heard these songs🎉 like it.
James often says this before they play this song live:
DO YOU WANT HEAVY?
METALLICA GIVES YOU HEAVY BABY !!! !!!
this song is mad heavy
\m/ c", ) \m/
He’s dedicated it to someone when I saw them and on other occasions. He dedicated it to a kid named “Cole” who was having a birthday at the time, when I saw them in ‘17. I forgot how old he was, but he was probably in elementary school.
For me, the whole "black" album has the best-produced/mixed sound of almost all metal albums. You can hear everything so clearly and you've got both a great high-end and bass mix. Best-sounding rock album of all time to me is the self-titled Boston album (1976) - for many of the same reasons.
It’s not my favorite, but you can’t deny the sound quality. It is pretty good
I love all Metallica. Not many bands out there that can say they can go on tour and create music for 40+ years. Too me the black albums a masterpiece just like master of puppets.
Don’t let anyone tell you how to run your channel, or what type of music you shouldn’t listen to or should listen too. I think you’re quite the genuine and honest person. Love watching your content. It almost makes it feel like your a friend to me, the way I follow you and watch your vids. Thank you for what you do mang. You seem like a really cool dude.
It was in early 2000s and I was just getting into Heavy Metal at the time and seeing this video, I really enjoyed it and seeing Their lead guitarist *Kirk Hammett* 9:22 playing a Jackson Rhoads guitar was so badass. Beautiful model🤘
Black album is a masterpiece, even people who hates it love listening to it. And Lars is a genius!!!
Bro the Lars haters are coming
One aspect of Metallica I think you’re kinda missing out on is the lyrics. James is a phenomenal lyric writer and the impact the songs have amplify when you understand the meaning/lyrics.
I suggest having the lyrics pulled up to the side while listening to Metallica songs. It adds another whole element
Keep it up man. Have fun with it.
I love the black album. My big brother bought me the cassette tape for Xmas 91. I spent the next few months with my Walkman playing it to death. I'd loved Metallica since I was introduced to MoP before my age hit double figures. 🤘
Great reaction
Great song
Best band.
You're obviously hooked. You've reacted to the first 5 albums and you've enjoyed it like everybody else on the planet, I think you're ready to explore the other albums.
Something other youtubers rarely do
Love love love sad but true since 1992 grade 8 😂❤
Metallica has never made a bad album. Yes I'm including St. Anger. They are undefeated and I love them.
Lulu would like to speak to you. 😉
@@seanentrikin9263 that's right, Lulu is terrible. Still it's Lou Reed's album...
St. Banger*
@@yumegd2625 Metallica did write most of the music. And performed it all. So I’d say it’s a Metallica album. But I get those who don’t think that.
My favorite album by Metallica
Mollyboy i said it once I'll say it again. Don't listen to those metal elitists and gatekeepers telling you that anything after And Justice for All... is "not good", or "not metal enough". This is music, not sports. You can leave that competition over there. Music is subjective and of course people are going to have differing opinions, but there is a difference between someone with logic, reasoning, and an open mind telling you that in their opinion, they don't like the direction a certain band or in this case Metallica, went after a certain project but still respects the band and understands people have different tastes. Versus close-minded elitist gatekeeping losers that think that think they have some type of superiority because they think heavier and brutal music is the only thing that's listenable; it's honestly very laughable. Metallica makes good music period! Keep up the reactions! You gotta do a reaction to Kill em all. Their first album and work your way up!
The fans that only like first 4 albums aren’t the true Metallica fans. This album is a masterpiece
No, it isn't. It's a great album and I like it a lot but it isn't a masterpiece.
Master of Puppets is their only “masterpiece” This album has Struggle Within…
Ride and master are the masterpieces🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
First 5 albums..Awesome..
A total masterpiece.
I'm jealous of you as you are getting to hear these metal songs for the first time. I'd love to hear them all again for the first time 😂
Black Album is a solid album! The production is brilliant ❤
I Love that drum track 🥁❤😊🤘
I’d love for you to react to Holier Than Thou!
Black album,new era of Metallica.
This is taken from their live video, Binge and Purge that features THREE concerts spanning ‘89-‘93, supporting Justice and the Black Album.
You should check that out, sometime.
I'm here for Metallica! So, no complaints from me! 🤘
I'm with you, this is my favourite album after MOP........ Don't be fooled, their later works still kick ass, check out "spit out the bone" it's fecking awesome 😎
