I completely agree I never realized how great Demon Slayer‘s designs are it was really eye-opening to me and the way Twiins explains it makes it very easy to follow the video.

As an aspiring character designer I was FLOORED by these designs when I first saw advertisement for the show and even when I watched it it was amazing. Its amazing how iconic you can make a design even with so much detail and I hope to see more amazing designs such as these in the future

Demon slayer has some of the greatest character designs I’ve ever seen. Every single character looks fantastic from the patterns on their clothes and the facial designs and colors on the demons. I especially love the designs of the demons because they have that inhuman yet still human look to them. My favorite minor design choice is the 12 kizuki having their rank tattooed on their eyes
when it comes to character designs twiins iink is the hero we all deserve. Demon slayer is probably one of my new favorite anime and this video gave a new perspective as to why that is. As you said these designs are really iconic and now I can appreciate them even more. also that edit in 7:56 made me laugh so hard. Also a small tip if you're struggling with pronouncing names is one thing to keep in mind is vowels in japanese are always pronounced the same unless they're paired with other vowels. so A is always "ah" (as in ah-ha!) E is always "eh", i is always "ee" O is always "oh" and U is always "oo" so his last name would be pronounced somewhere along the lines of "Go-Toe (the "oh" sound is slightly more emphasized because the o and u are paired together)-Geh" (think hey but with a g instead) there's a bit more to the pronunciation but that's the basics. Hopefully that explanation wasn't too long. I studied Japanese in college and as my passion I think it's nice when we can learn things about other culture even if it's little things (I loved that little explanation about Noh theatre and their masks, their so striking and yet beautiful at the same time)
This is certainly very helpful. I’m really terrible when it comes to thinking of designs. Usually I worry a lot about silhouettes. By the way when you take silhouettes into account for character design is it based on certain angles/poses or is it just in general from all sides?
It depends on what you're doing with the design. If you're just like, drawing a pretty character for a single picture then I only consider the silhouette for the composition of the specific image. But if it's for a comic, I instead try and consider how the silhouette reads during different actions.
My favorite design has to be Shinobu I love her butterfly aesthetic and her creepy bug eyes. It gives a sense of disrupting sense of danger also her *voice* is both beautiful and scary.
Okay, so for real, super love how you noticed that thing about Giyu's haori. Also, as a side thing, I think it'd be great to see you look at the silhouette's of the upper moons (in the movie) and explain what you can glean/guess about the characters based on those. Would be super fun, with how intuitive you are with the subject.
I always liked the character designs in Demon Slayer but I couldn't quite voice why, this video really gave my unorganized thoughts actual words. Well done! I'd love to see you review Demon Slayer episodes the way you used to do for RWBY since you have a lot of insight on it

Lol, I loved the editing on this one. Demon slayer was a pretty good anime, I loved the asthetic, music and feel of it. Made me interested in buying Sekiro (though i haven't gottem my hands on it yet)
To be honest, I've found that color coded character designs to be my favorite type of character design! Such a fun way to design and help distinguish characters apart and help them be memorable! Even if that's just part of what makes a design great

Aaah this video is so good! I'll admit that, especially when I started watching, I hated the art style and character designs in demon slayer and while I still sort of feel that way, I know it's a matter of personal taste. They're really distinct and well-designed. As someone who is terrible with names, the way you described the characters before you knew them is just how I was able to talk about them- it's so easy! I think what demon slayer really excels at is polishing concepts that are often taken for granted, which is really refreshing in shonen (which i think can easily gets lazy with well-known concepts).
Colors and patterns are always my favourite parts of character design and that’s why I love the Demon Slayer designs. When I draw my own original characters I can’t resist adding little patterns to their clothes and scars and other markings to their faces.
I stumbled upon your video and I’m so glad that I did! 🥰Thank you for using your expertise to give further insight on the amazing subtly (or uniqueness) of art in demon slayer’s folklore-esque storyline!! Like you said, the main character shouldn’t be the only character that stands out or that people can easily recognize and even the points you made about the eyes and masks were shocking to me!! Fantastic video. Demon Slayer has such a beautiful unique look. The only other anime that I think is on par with its design is Bleach (and Bleach's animation isn't 1/10th as good as Demon Slayers's) Looking forward to a Jujutsu Kaisen vid. Strike while the iron is hot.
I remember back when the anime first came out I thought the characters looked kinda silly, but the animation medium does wonders for these designs and the action makes them look so cool especially when they use their Breathing Styles. Nowadays I am genuinely blown away by these looks. They are so fun looking.

A thing I love about the hashira is how they all have the same base of the demon slayer uniform. Despite some designs straying far from that base, it is the same uniform at its core. It shows that: 1. They are in the same organization (duh) 2. A sense a comradery and unity to make sure no one sticks out like a sore thumb and 3.That despite their differences they all at their core want a world safe from demons. I think it really encapsulates the themes of demon slayers and how you can make characters with similar goals stand out to eachother, but not have any black sheep.
So I’m not sure if your taking requests for topics or not but if you are then could you possibly do a discussion on the SinoAlice character designs? (If you don’t know what that is it’s essentially a mobile dark fantasy game with fairytales involved. It was also made by Yoko Taro the creator of the Nier games.)

Good job, I agree with most of your video, while I think some parts of the characters are too over designed (one example Mitsuri, I think her hair clashes too much), but the animation is so good that they don’t look out of place or jarring while in motion

Tomioka's pattern represents the losses of his. One the red side being his sister who got killed by a demon the other one and you are correct is sabito's who died saving him and everyone in the final selection. This is only noted in the manga and you could've found it on google
Masks were the main reason I got into Tokyo Ghoul. It's a bit of a downer anime so you wouldn't like it. But it was what csme to mond with your comments on animes that frequently use masks.

Not only the looks but also the depth of the character and their representation in the animation. This show I was constrantly flip flopping at what character was my favorite almost all hit some internal string that made me love them. And there are so many, when the hashiras got introduced I was in total awe. It comes over like its done in a formulaic way in the whole show and it works.
It is true that it takes time to make the unique designs in the manga before one of the chapters they have these little side things and Tanjiro and Nezukos first designs look very different from their designs now.
Man, this characterer desing talk makes me think of dungeon meshi. Every characterer there has a unique look. I think you would like it if that's you jam.
5:40 I'm actually shocked at how good I am. I got Shinobu immediately and Inosuke after 2 seconds. I don't know the third, but if I had to guess it'd be less important demon, though my first guess was Rui. And I'm not even particularly a fan. I haven't watched anything about the show since like 2018
6:04 Yes. And I haven't watched Idolm@ster or Love Live or whatever this is. Bottom left girl is the only one that looks completely normal. You just didn't do a good enough job swapping them.
12:18 That's not fair at all. Subaru should not be there. His clothes are an obvious stand-out, but his eyes are also completely unique, and the hairstyle is very recognizable, too. You could have found a billion other generic protagonists, so why him? And I'm not just saying this because I like Re:Zero. The Monogatari series is one of my favorite animes of all time, but I can see that Araragi's design is lackluster to say the least.
12:30 That's just bullcrap. They are not tired design tropes. Because they aren't tropes. At least the top two definitely, 100% aren't. What the hell do you mean by "girl with long pink hair"? What kind of trope is that? That's just a realistic hairstyle with a unique color. And the black one is just a straight up realistic hair. Making normal looking hair is not a fucking trope. It's boring, sure. It's not great design, sure. But it is not a trope.
When you said the self insert characters 4/6 that you had on screen are actually quite unique and well written and each are fairly recognizable except the middle two though nice video.
Despite my feelings about Demon Slayer's overall quality (not counting the anime), I'll admit the character designs are really good and easily the best thing about the series for me. You also gave me some stuff to think about with the eyes and hair shape.

(If you don’t know what that is it’s essentially a mobile dark fantasy game with fairytales involved. It was also made by Yoko Taro the creator of the Nier games.)
I don't take requests, but I do like SinOAlice's designs a lot so there may be a video discussing them some day.

Good job, I agree with most of your video, while I think some parts of the characters are too over designed (one example Mitsuri, I think her hair clashes too much), but the animation is so good that they don’t look out of place or jarring while in motion

Tomioka's pattern represents the losses of his. One the red side being his sister who got killed by a demon the other one and you are correct is sabito's who died saving him and everyone in the final selection. This is only noted in the manga and you could've found it on google
Ypull understand giyuu design more in a few seasons.
Masks were the main reason I got into Tokyo Ghoul. It's a bit of a downer anime so you wouldn't like it. But it was what csme to mond with your comments on animes that frequently use masks.

Not only the looks but also the depth of the character and their representation in the animation. This show I was constrantly flip flopping at what character was my favorite almost all hit some internal string that made me love them. And there are so many, when the hashiras got introduced I was in total awe. It comes over like its done in a formulaic way in the whole show and it works.
It is true that it takes time to make the unique designs in the manga before one of the chapters they have these little side things and Tanjiro and Nezukos first designs look very different from their designs now.

And I'm not just saying this because I like Re:Zero. The Monogatari series is one of my favorite animes of all time, but I can see that Araragi's design is lackluster to say the least.

When you said the self insert characters 4/6 that you had on screen are actually quite unique and well written and each are fairly recognizable except the middle two though nice video.

Despite my feelings about Demon Slayer's overall quality (not counting the anime), I'll admit the character designs are really good and easily the best thing about the series for me.
