Vivi only is fun. I think Ark is the only problem here but you can skip him. If you don't skip Ark, it's still doable, just requires a LOT of hi-potions.
You can actually revive yourself when hit with Doom. Set the battle to 'wait' then when the timer reaches 1, (provided Lich's turn is done) open the Item option, use a Phoenix Down on yourself.
I like that your being honest with your deaths. I feel like every other challenge run youtubers cut all and any Deaths out and make it seem like they were so smart and skilled enough they did a really hard challenge flawlessly the very first time
You can abuse trance by using high tide. Allowing for more damage. trance builds based on the Spirit stat. Normally it needs 255 pts or whatever to trance. So every attack, maybe every action builds randomly 1-(spirit stat value). High Tide makes it so you always hit the max value. So if you had 51 spirit it will only take 5 attacks to trance.
I did not know this and am working on a play through now. I never really used high tide because I wasn't sure how it functioned and I had a high cost. Gonna have to reevaluate now. Thanks for the awesome tip.

Thinking about the absurdity of the grand cross and RNG just brought up a memory of mine. I can't remember how old I was at the time, but a veteran enough that a normal run through the game is a breeze. I was visiting my dads side of the family since we didn't see each other very often due to distance. Both my cousins (one older, one younger) and I were gamers and we got talking; got onto FF9. I was shocked when they were telling me how hard it was and that they couldn't beat the game. Dear god, I booted up their save to see they'd made it to deathguise.... only the average level of the characters was about 17. Now.... I know there are strategies for low level gameplay and that revolves around having the right equipment. Yeah, you can guess how bad the situation was that it took them 60 hours to get that far. Surprised they didn't rage quit actually. They asked me if I could beat the game for them and I'm like 'dude, you literally have nothing.' So, I ran back through memoria picking up some better weapons and getting some of the skills that needed less AP to learn - I only had that afternoon fo do this in. Eventually I go back Deathguise was fine, died once to Kuja but no biggie, second time around was cool. Necron was a pain in the ass and I ended up with the absolute most ridiculous luck. After wiping out 5 times, the 6th run was going okay, but a bit on the edge. Then we had a bad run with the neutron ring and grand cross coming in a 1-2 combo. Everyone died except vivi..... and he was in the beserk status. He did have auto-regen.... and it barely kept him alive. We sat there for half hour watching Vivi automatically attack, just waiting for Necron to finish him off. I kid you not, Vivi actually beat Necron with nothing but physical attacks. I don't think I'll ever be as lucky as this again.
How did they manage to get to the end of the game with level 17 and no proper equipment..? My friend group was 8-9 years old when we started playing FF9, and we managed to only get to the beginning of Disc 2 in Treno during the 3 months of summer. We didn’t equip anything and didn’t activate any abilities. That was HARD. And then I was grinding all year long alone (it was my PS1), until we were finally able to beat the pink worm NEXT SUMMER. Needled to say, we have finished the game when I was 13. One disc a year, it was our childhood adventure (to be fair, we understood the mechanics of the game somewhere during Disc 2).

I know it definitely possible to get to that point, but that's usually a task where you'd know how to juggle skills and equipment. They did say they had a really hard time getting to that point. Like dude, you did no side quests or anything. I don't think you battled more than you had to... No wonder on a first run you found it so hard

You did have other options for running shoes, you can get like 3 or 4 pairs in a single run of the game. The treno weapon shop has its caged creature you can challenge i think the disc 2 or disc 3 challenge gives you a pair, and you can also, either during the garnet rescue or mistodon attack on Alexandria, go to the library and challenge tantarian hiding in one of the shelves and he drops a pair upon defeat. And lets not forget the items you can get via the auction house for some good ability options including the rebirth ring for auto-life. Or Excalibur for Steiner in his solo run?
Possible, yes. With the potential setups you can give to any character, solo play is definitely possible. (With the exception of the forced use scenarios and events within the game.)
It's funny to me. 9 has this kind of upbeat, happy-go-lucky kinda vibe. Easily the most dark and depressing Final Fantasy in the series. Brahne commits so much genocide she makes Hitler look like a puppy.

Couple comments. 1) ive been watching/listening to a lot of your stuff on my 2nd monitor at work and figured it was time i actually subbed to you, so i did. 2) idk how much youve played ff7, but id love an Enemy Skill Materia only run. I think that would be super interesting, and i havent found a run like that on youtube yet. You dont get one of the materia until after you get Red XIII and you dont get a chance at an enemy skill until after Midgar so I'd say just do attack option only until you get your first skill and then the run begins. 3) kongol slow boi but best boi
Late to this party, but I always leveled Zidane to 9 or 10 back and forth on the goblins and fangs in the evil forest entrance. Literally fixes any challenges in the game from then on and massively boosts thievery.

In the long run, you have to increase basically 3 stats: strength, speed and spirit, because this one speeds your regen and trance bar, but it speeds the doom spell as well...
You can also get running shoes from Tantarian but in a Zidane solo that's a bit tricky. Steiner and Quina are 2 of the best characters for killing him easily since they have Minus Strike and Pumpkin Head to force the book to open if you pre rig their HP, but it's probably still possible with any solo character with enough extra levels to have hp for surviving attacks. He's also missable though since once Alexandria castle goes boom no more Tantarian
How do you fight tantarian with quina? He/she isn't available in the party for either disk 2 or 3 tantarian, unless im being dumb and you can fight him after the disk 3 encounter?
@@XgamerunlimitedX IIRC you can grab Quina again before Alexandria goes boom boom at some point to do it then. I might be misremembering that though because it's been so long since I played FF9, I just remembered Quina's Pumpkin Drop being identical to Minus Strike

Just wanted to share a tip if you do another run through FFIX: when you fight Beatrix her fights are based on time and not damage, if you just sit and heal all fight it’ll still end with her using Stock Break or Climhazard, making it much easier to win.
I, too, spend way too much time playing chocobo hot and cold. It's not quite as long now with the speed-up boosters, but it's still a while lol. The other day I actually got the rare barrette accessory from digging. First time in, I don't know...twenty years??

You sir have my attention with these challenges. But allow me to offer a couple extra games to the 'solo character challenges'. Secret of Mana (your choice between classic style, available via collection of mana on Switch, or the remake; only real difference being the remake's option to increase your item capacity from 4 to 8 or 12 of every item) and Trials of Mana both the classic version via collection of mana, and the remake 3D version (you have 3 story options and 6 characters you could take down each story path) and end with a solo attempt on the black rabite; only available on 1 path in the classic version, but on every path in the 3D remake Only stipulations i can recall in all my time playing the games is ghosts can't use cannon travel, and you would have to revive your magic users on occasion to deal with crystal switches. I would say the secret of mana run ends at lich as the entire party is needed for the mana beast and you can't exactly attack yourself.
thing that would of saved ya alot of grief would keep everyone alive but only command non-zidane members could do (unless he's not in party) would be defend. That way you can raise their lvl's for when Zidane is not in party. Well this could be more grief as trying to keep them alive during boss fights with only Zidane being able to do anything beyond defend.
@28:39 dont you also get the running shoes if you visit vivis old home with quina and vivi in your party, and after the dialogue you get them from the grandfatherclock i think :)
You get the running shoes from Tantarian the optional Book boss in Alexandra's castle. You only have 2 chances to fight it before you're locked out of the fight.
This is why they give you Amarant so late in the game. He sucks storywise, but he's broken AF. He's Zidane but like 10 times more useful. - Hits hard - can return magic - can restore MP/HP - can literally deal infinite revives in advance - can make other enemies weaker to magic - can use non-elemental magic skills to deal significant damage The only thing this guy can't do is summon. buuuuuut a challenge wouldn't be fun with a character that OP lol.

I suggest using Lucky Seven against Tantatian. But if Thievery is already powerful at that point, that works too.

Only stipulations i can recall in all my time playing the games is ghosts can't use cannon travel, and you would have to revive your magic users on occasion to deal with crystal switches.
I would say the secret of mana run ends at lich as the entire party is needed for the mana beast and you can't exactly attack yourself.
thing that would of saved ya alot of grief would keep everyone alive but only command non-zidane members could do (unless he's not in party) would be defend. That way you can raise their lvl's for when Zidane is not in party. Well this could be more grief as trying to keep them alive during boss fights with only Zidane being able to do anything beyond defend.
they don't get experience for surviving boss battles, only AP, so it's not really a big deal if they die in those anyway.

@28:39 dont you also get the running shoes if you visit vivis old home with quina and vivi in your party, and after the dialogue you get them from the grandfatherclock i think :)
I believe you also get them as a reward for winning the card tournament before Alexandria gets attacked by Bahamut
You get the running shoes from Tantarian the optional Book boss in Alexandra's castle. You only have 2 chances to fight it before you're locked out of the fight.

He sucks storywise, but he's broken AF. He's Zidane but like 10 times more useful.

- can restore MP/HP
- can literally deal infinite revives in advance
- can make other enemies weaker to magic
- can use non-elemental magic skills to deal significant damage
The only thing this guy can't do is summon.
