"Ill work on it tommorow" "My friends want to play video games with me" "im scared ill get writers block" "i dont know how to play the piano i cant make melodies". Day by fucking day i say these things, especially when i think of an amazing melody in my head and i want to create it into a song and i just put that melody on a hold and end up forgetting what it was the next hour. Laziness is my #1 flaw in my life and for some reason i cant change it but i want to change it i need to change it. Thank you adam for this video

my biggest excuse was I cant do it because all the people I cared for who told me I would fail were right. but it was me who made the choice to be around those people and I made the choice to believe them and I held myself down with words that never came from me. so I decided to stop talking to the people I loved who didnt see potential in me. i decided to fill my mind with motivational words and now i see my choice is powerful. I've had thousands of excuses why I could not succeed because i put them there through staying in a toxic environment. now I choose to hear people like you speak so I can find a positive purpose through crafting a positive environment. thank you for your output it's going to do amazing things for amazing people

Great video again Ivy! What works for me is thinking: every effort I put in is extra. Whether this is regarding producing music or going to the gym for example, every little bit of effort adds up. As a fulltime producer I've found that even those days without inspiration and feeling like shit add up in the end. It's the amount of hours you put in and eventually, something will come. And so does motivation! :)

I was in bands straight out of high school for over 10 years and we got screwed over time and time again. This basically shut me off to the idea of sharing my music or attempting to get out there and make something of myself. It wasn't until recently that I identified that this was the thing holding me back. I would bounce back and forth from project to project never actually completing anything. I have finally put all that behind me by doing exactly what you and Simon Sinek are preaching, finding my why! I want to do what I love day in and day out and be able to support my family doing so. This has lit a fire under me! I have focused on a single project and have focused on improving my musical prowess from all aspects: writing, recording , mixing and the business side of things as well. Watching your videos helps keep me that way so thanks and keep doin what you do!

    dope video.
my greatest excuse has been fear of success. ever since I quit my job, I've been running at that fear. Facing it. each day is difficult. some days I want to give up. Experience self doubt, and new entreprenuial types of depression that I didn't know existed. still pushing. actively building a new routine.
    thanks.

i have so many excuses and i feel like i have been controlled by my fear my whole life. heres a few of them:
    1. im not good enough anyways
2.im way too tired all the time
the list goes on. sorry about the lenghty comment but i really have to get this out:
i have so much passion and ambition but fear of not being successful makes me procrastinate, making me more and more depressed. everytime i think about why i get suicidal is because im not, and have not been following my dreams. i need someone to believe in me but i know that the hard truth is that i have to start believing in myself. as hard as it is to make productive steps its a million times harder to live with the regret that i could have done something about it , but didnt

Stefan Klassen Same, but I’m currently taking online voice and ukulele lessons, so hopefully I will be good enough soon. I’m also in the middle of writing my first song, which I’m planning on producing once written (something I’ve never done before!). Hopefully, if all goes well, I can convince my parents to let me try TH-cam for a year and see where it goes. Anyway, I know how hard it can be, but you have to do what’s best for you. I recommend that you use this time to get better at what you want to do, implement it as a hobby and see where it goes. Hopefully, you find the courage to go after your dreams and they all come true

I love how visceral and heavy your message hits, how much power you give us viewers in the form of your knowledge. I've been too lazy and you called me out on getting home and just laying down, play games not working on the craft. Now I believe that standing and workout out when I get sluggish and taking out the guitar and laptop everyday will keep me on track. Thank you bunches! -ab

Adam, I gotta say this video pissed me off for the sole reason that you called me out on every little thing. Honestly, your content makes me reevaluate everything and brings me back to the basics. It doesn't matter what the subject matter is or which video I watch, every single one of them leave me feeling like I can take on the world. You are seriously the most inspirational person I have had the pleasure of coming across. Thank you for everything you do and for actually believing in us... probably more than some of us do ourselves. Much love, man!

Hey Adam! First of all, thank you. You always find the right words to get me going.
Here’s my story: Six years ago I left my country to make better money so I could support my goals in the music industry.I worked my ass off 12-14 hours a day 6 days a week and I saved up a lot of money to achieve what I planned, but that’s when sh*t happened. My family got into a financial crisis and I had to decide whether I help them or keep on track what I had in mind. Needless to say I chose the first option, even further I had to take a large amount of loan too...
I felt lost, this shattered my dreams/goals, even though I was happy I could help out my family, but all my 4 years of hard work just flushed down the toilet. Ever since I felt burnt out, mentally broken, I felt old to “make” it, felt like I wouldnt be able to do it all over again, but thanks to you I’m on track again and hence the disadvantage and some days being harder, I’m gonna make it right and keep on grindin’... thanks man.
    Cheers, Adam

I make a lot of excuses like I’m too tired or I lack the necessary resources to try. I also don’t “Act as if” and have lost the confidence in myself to believe that I can pursue music. I tend to get caught up in the comparison trap as well, feeling that my capabilities wouldn’t measure up or make its mark. I’ve definitely lost the “Why” or the purpose behind doing music in the first place.
    My solution would be to
    1. reconnect with why I decided to do music,
    2. Fight the feelings of laziness making a conscious effort to go against the bad habits I’ve created.
    3. Implement more physical, mental and spiritual self care and awareness.
    4. Recognize and be grateful for MY unique perspective and gift of music, finding FUN ways to increase and grow in my niche

My music always end up sounding shitty, my ideas aren’t as good as they were some months ago, i really don’t like my songs anymore. I wish my tracks sounded better, were more catchy, had a great vocals to accomplish them, so they could actually stream. My ideas always sound so used and unoriginal, i always find mistakes in my songs once they are posted, and i have been producing for 4 and a half years. I feel like i am really close to giving up on producing even though it’s my biggest dream and the only thing i want to to with my life.
I really am trying to fix it tho, but this is really going nowhere

    • @torneyes
      @torneyes 3 ปีที่แล้ว

So what it sounds shitty? You're not gonna have the perfect song every time. Keep making music everyday. Pull from inspiration in your life and just make music about it. Start befriending other musicians and build with them. Bro keep your head up, shit will get better.

Hi Adam. This is Dave Jay from NYC. I found your vids. on YT a few weeks ago or so, and I am so glad I have. Thank you for the perspective, knowledge and inspiration you provide from the benefit of your experience. This is my 1st comment on one of your posts. I've been taking notes, and trying to juggle all of my creative endeavors. I've begun to change over time and increase motivation, (w/ the help of my very motivated wife--she helped me change my diet, finances, and entire "paradigm" for the better). My biggest ongoing excuse has been: : "I don't know what to do, and how to do it consistently" (part overwhelm from the number of things to do, and knowledge as to how to do it well). But, over recent months, I've been studying your vids., as well as those of Damian Keyes, Tom Jackson, and even Mark Cuban (about having that entrepreneurial mindset), and it's all improving. Please keep goin'! You're doin' great work!

Great video as always but I have to ask, did you forget to edit out the scenes between 08:30 and 09:30?
Between 12:17 and 12:23 made me catch my breathe a little bit because those are words I have never heard said aimed at a group of people including me.
I look after my son all day without help, so once he is in bed and my husband is home from work I just want to spend time with him, not in separate rooms whilst I record a video. I am also guilty of something you mentioned in a past video, I feel like everything needs to be perfect with the way I look before I record a video. I have been taking steps to combat that since watching your video made me realise that it is something I am guilty of.

    • @adamivy
      @adamivy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +68

To be completely honest I totally missed those restarts while editing. Lol. It just goes to show that I stumble on my words sometimes, but I don't let it slow me down. It takes time and practice to get comfortable with being on camera. A couple years ago I would have probably deleted the video because of that editing mistake. Now I embrace it so people can see I'm human too. I really appreciate your continued support.

This has helped me more than anything. I had a dream of being a musician since I was 5 years old and went to my first concert. I joined my first band at 12 and went rolling heavy with many other bands until I was 18 and gained some traction. And when other members started living their own lives I lost motivation, but the dream never died. And to answer your question, my excuse was always “one day” but this video made me realize it should be “why not today?” Seriously your words are inspirational and I apologize for seeing this so late. Currently going into my house to write more guitar and lyrics. Thank you for the video and I can’t wait to see more!!

I'm an on learning sing, songwriter, music producer. i'm a senior in high school, track athlete, worker at a mcdoanlds. this has helped a lot. ive always been thinking about my sense of emergency before watching this video and as of right now, my sense of emergency is to do what i love. to prove the american education system wrong that school doesn't always lead to a happy and successful life. to prove to myself that i too, AM ON TOP. my most used excuse, is that there isn't enough time, or that i'm actually mentally or physically exhauted from my day from either school and work, school and track, etc. im going to use all of my time i possibly can to continue pursuing my dream. right now, some people see that i have an admiration for the music industry in hopes of one day making it big. they laugh at me but will never in front of me and i know it.
i will prove everbody wrong, once i prove myself.

I have been relying on a plethora of excuses hahah. Difficulty managing my sleep patterns leading to difficulty creating routine, lack of time management, lack of energy (also really struggle with fatigue/low iron and trying to heal my body holistically), freaking out over whether I'm even doing the right thing and having to step back from everything for a few weeks, depression etc etc etc, all of this has led to me still being barely halfway through my album (albeit basically a double album and I'm doing an EP on the side) after over 3 years of supposedly sloggin it out. I recently decided I need to cut the shit and wrote down a rough gameplan for getting all the songs recorded and sent to my mixing dude (brother!) in the next six months. I've done this sort of thing before and fallen right off track again so I'm going to keep feeding myself inspirational content like this, and I'm going to try and build a support network to hold me accountable, starting with putting the word out on facebook that if they're not seeing me reporting regularly on the progress of my music they should pick me up on it! I'll try what you said about moving around when I'm tired too :) Thanks again bruh! x

I just now watched your video. I never once heard of your channel but I was feeling low today I looked up why people lose motivation in to the TH-cam search bar I saw your video and clicked on it.
What you said was true and to answer your last question my excuse is, I find my shelf to be completely out of energy and ideas to write lyrics for songs. And when I do write something it always sounds like the last song I wrote sad and angry. I can't seem to break the cycle no matter what I do. Not too mention my home life is always hectic. And the people I live with are loud. But when I stop trying to write lyrics or play my guitar I feel useless and depressed like the reasons why I do write/ play music is because I love it I love everything about it and it feels like it's the only thing I'm truly good at. But it's just hard I have all the time in the world to make music but I don't use it I just waste it.
Thanks by the way your video opened up my eyes to what I should do.

My challenge at the moment is include study music production everyday or almost everyday. I live alone and work to support myself and I realised that I can’t wait has the “perfect” moment to study. I mean, would be way better if I don’t have to work, but as I have, what I can do is adapt my routine. Then, I started to wake up 5am, deleted my Instagram for while and practicing to say no to people and situations that no longer will help me in this journey. Between all of those challenges, I would say “say no” is essential and one of the most difficult. Cause if you say yes to everyone you say no to yourself at end of the day.

    *I'm an 18-year-old lithuanian btw*
Depression. Slump. A dream that seems too unreachable and unrealistic. The last year of highschool, exams, stress, expectations.
But I have a very strong 'WHY' in me, which is to create what I needed and wished I had when I was a child. To create a better future, to create more opurturities for kids now, like I was before. For dreams that are difficult to reach. That is my 'WHY'. To create music, build my brand, create a name and then use that known name to create an Entertanment buisness/ school, where with other people that have the same goal as me (btw I have not found thouse people yet) we would create a school for teens with dance classes, singing classes and all the needed knowladge for the entertainment busness. It's a vague disription of my dream, but thats my dream.
The the thing that sucks the motivation out of me is (depression, but not about that) the fear of not being able to finish school. I was so out of it for a long time, due to mental ilness, that now I feel very unprepared for the exams, with very limited amount of energy to catch up. That is what causes stress, which results in a depression slump and escapism into Tv-series, movies, k-pop, IG, TikTok and other time-consuming things.
And to answer your last question:
    yes, I fu**ing enjoyed it.
But truely, thank you. You motivate and teach me the needed information. And I am very grateful. I hope you become very famous, but more importantly, I hope you rech you most impossible dreams.

Okay I'm going to be honest with you all here.
My biggest excuse, I think it's that there's just so much to learn that it's overwhelming. The thing is though, every little thing that I put my all into learning actually succeeds, yet somehow I always manage to face another problem right after and basically give up/procrastinate straight away. I know that I can and WILL learn from it, just based on experience, but constantly seeing everything that's wrong really destroys morale.
Now, my biggest trigger is definitely just not putting in ANY amount of work in a day. I can easily go a full week producing but as said above, at a point I usually stop. Now, I'd say to myself "oh, just one day off won't hurt", but it REALLY does. As you said, "a day turns into a week, a month, a year", and you're absolutely right. I haven't done anything for a month and a half just because I wanted to take one day off - and this certainly isn't the first time this has happened. Don't forget games, diet, and leaving it until night then saying "not enough time." I've done just about anything to procrastinate - even mundane household chores.
Thank you for this video, you've allowed me to really explore my weaknesses in depth so I can try to get past them. I'll do my best to develop a plan and make proper habits, as well as dedicate at least 20mins per day even if I'm not feeling it. I promise you, people reading this comment, that I will try my hardest from here on in and I really, *really* hope you do too.

something that I been using as a excuse is not seeing anything happen, and wondering if im doing enough to better myself to become a full time music producer. My name is Daquan Curtis I live in Washington D.C. I am really nervous when it comes down to talking to new people. I started working at a coffee shop and I have to break that fear by talking to new people and that helped me a lot. the people who owns the shop created it from the ground up and they inspire me to get off my ass, stop playing video games all the time and kick starting my career. I am currently applying to colleges so I can learn more about music theory and meet and socialize with people that's just like me.

My #1 excuse is: I'll wait for my next holiday when I'll have plenty of time to work on and develop my skills during my free time because school is demanding so much from me now... But it really isn't. Thanks for the video.

You've said everything I needed to know! And also, didn't know you have to deal with hypothyroidism, I have to take one levothyroxine pill every morning, I'm struggling with sedentary lifestyle. I'm just sitting here waiting for my audio interface Scarlett, I bought it last week. I'm composing my music again (I have more than 15 songs), after 10 years of no music (because of social presion and stuff). There was an awakening in my soul, heart, and then I said "screw this! I need to make music, I've always played music, violin (Suzuki Method), guitar, drums, bass, studied music theory, everything about music, since when I was a child! I can't live being something I don't want to be, I need to be someone, etc." So, I'm waiting for my audio interface, I have my bass guitar ready, tomorrow I'm goin to sell some old and new clothes at the flea market, make some money, buy a guitar, and start writing with real instruments (I'm composing with Guitar Pro 7)! Also, I will have a more healthy lifestyle, and I will work hard, very hard. I have a friend and he is a music producer, he's trying to help me, he wants me to play music and record an album for free! another friend wants to play with me, there's a lot of opportunities and I have to do this. Three months of sleepless nights and now it's the time. Even though I live in a country where is difficult to live as a musician, I will never let anything to let me down. Sorry for the long text, I just want to thank you, for this video, and say to all the people: don't live dreaming! You have to fulfill your destiny! The time is now, you have to fight! Thank you very much! You have a like and a new subscriber! Greetings from Chile!

Having trouble with quantity vs quality of music in this modern age. I committed to put up a song once a week on youtube but then other musicians focus a lot more on quality than quantity. But if you look at Picasso, he produced so many of his art and I also believe a ted talk mentioned that the more you produce the more chances you will get heard. Just like Mozart too I think, he just produced a ton of work so that it was easier for it to get caught by some net of listeners in the world. Solution? Just trying to allow time in the day for creativity to work. Sometimes its good, sometimes it's crap, but that's ok... and this is the mentality I try to work off of.

There’s this whole cliche about “the grind”. There is truth to it. But look. If your an ordinary person with a full time job and responsibilities there is no rule whatsoever that you have to come home and “grind” for 5 hours. Of course your not going to be motivated! your only human and can only do so much! Instead listen to your body. If that means just putting in 20 min. to write 1 lyric of a song that night and that’s all you have time for YOU WIN. Today I listened back to some tracks I wrote a couple days ago in my car. Tomorrow I’ll put in a couple hours of guitar time. Maybe some days I’ll put in the 10 hours. It’s the small victories. The bunts and base hits. If your swinging for home runs all the time of course your going to miss more and thus lose motivation. There are people who TRULY have it in their blood to come home and “grind” till 1am everyday and God bless em but those people are rare honestly. If you find room to quit your job and pursue hard by all means, for the rest of us do what you can when you can but just do it!
