I think the issue is that to build something decent, you need to sample multiple options ranging from sub $100 through the ~$200-500 range. Might be interesting to see what happens if you spend $1,000 at each stage and picking the best from each stage to send to the next stage.
This fiver guys stuff made me suspect that my bedroom production is not as bad as I used to think) Thank you for that feeling man)😂 and it's great to watch you in action, keep it up please
I actually just ordered a fiverr instrumental for $250 from a producer with 30 years of experience and after hearing the instrumental demo, based on my instructions, I thought I could do a lot better with only 6 months of experience 😅
Probably not fair for those fiverr artists to have that represent their work. To be responsible for just one piece of the puzzle without any context to what any of the other parts are like…im surprised it didn’t turn out worse than it did. However, the result of the fiverr mashup seems to have served its purpose. Allowing this creator to showcase a clearly superior piece to compare to. I believe had the fiverr guys been able to collaborate somehow, or if each piece of the music were completed in order, for instance, drums finished before supplying the scratch plus the new drums to the pianist, then those tk pieces complete before turning over to the fill, or guitar or whatever. Then all those finished before turning over to the artist responsible for vocals. And all of that complete before turning over to the engineer and mastering etc. Some sort of idea to move from between different sections. It’s like with any art form. Imagine doing this with a painting for example. Separated into segments, one artist responsible for the sky, one responsible for foliage. Another for people or animals, a different artist for sketch, then a different for final line work, then a different one for color, a doffeeent for shading. Imagine that, no context, some may add a bit of abstract flair, others may have a cartoonish appearance, others are hyper realistic, the sketch and line work complete with the hodgepodge of different flavors, to try and color that somehow to look decent. Of course a mediocre artist would have a better looking painting doing it all one’s self. Idk. Long comment here I guess
Agreed - the issue is that the way I went about this is really how a LOT of people go about it. I was trying to approach this with a more hands off approach to actually in part demonstrate how key it is to have a creative "director" who is making sure the pieces are put together right. Because had there been that component it wouldve been different. But that is just not how most people are using Fiverr unfortunately.
Sounds great! Definitely the drum sounds and vocal layering in the fiverr version were the things that jumped out at first. Saylor's voice is great. That acoustic sound at the beginning is so nice.
For what you paid, you pretty much got your money's worth. That being said, I would go 3.5. Not faulting any performer for the rating, you just got 10 to $15 product. I agreed on the consistent doubling throughout the first one. It just didn't have any range or emotion throughout as a result. Your piece used unique sounds, as well as more through mixing, and production as a whole. I dug it. The harmonic and coral undertones on yours were really great, Nathan. In short, you get what you pay for.
I am an aspiring song writer and producer, and your videos have been a huge help. I wish I had the money to do your Producer Accelerator course, as it looks like an amazing program, but that is far out of the budget for me. Thanks, tho, for all of the great YT content. Even that yea he’s a lot!
Actually pretty shitty paying bottom dollar for musicians trying to make an honest living then laughing and making goofy faces at the result. No one is going to spend their whole day for that kind of money so you get what you pay for. Had you chosen another freelancer the result could have been totally different. You paid less than $100 all while knowing you were going to show off on TH-cam after it was done.
I’m so grateful to have found your account, That video were you spoke about actual practicing than “learning” stuck with me and after two weeks of deceiving myself, I finally wrote a song like an hour ago, for the first time. This may not be possible or a lot to ask but i’m an artist, and i got tired of always saving up money to record at someone else’s studio and then not being satisfied with their work so i spent all my money on trying to get my own studio. I was wondering if You can Mentor me. I’d really appreciate it Sir. 🙏🏾
Nathan, great video I’m pretty new to the game, but my daughter is currently working with a high profile music producer out of New York. He’s finishing up three of her songs currently and should be out early October. She’s very talented and she’s a song writer, singer and pianist. She has a lot of other songs that she needs produced. Is this something that you could do?
Hey! That is super cool - I do take on artist clients but on a limited basis. You can go here: nathanjameslarsen.com/letswork At the moment I am only taking a very small number of artists since my calendar is extremely full as it is with my own projects and current clients, so I can't promise anything and I need to align with the vision of the project to take it on. Hope that makes sense!
Hey Nathan, I don’t know if you remember but about a year ago I reached out and asked for advice on how to start a TH-cam channel. I just wanted to say a HUGE THANK YOU because I took your advice and been applying those tips to the best of my ability and well.. 1 year later, 890 subs and 100K views on the channel. Hope you know I’m truly grateful for someone with your kind of success to still take the time and help out new creators.
Agree..the Fiverr mix was competing against itself and too narrow in EQ. I liked your acoustic guitar part. The "start stop" vocal line was clever, would have loved for the drums to act as a rhythmic counterpoint (so-to-speak) rather than just straight, I was hearing something like a Police reggae feel but also with a subliminal driving percussion element. A high bell sound, even something whimsical that underscores what I felt was a lighthearted way to say "I love you" would have been fun. Haven't watched you in awhile, but this was worth checking out. Thanks...I know it took quite awhile to produce!
I've be at this rim scratch for 2-3 years now. Scratch tracj to production seems much more involved than you make it appear. There's no short cuts but when is good good enough?
Before you mixed the vocals it was really bad but I like the way you did the second voice with the facts and hit it behind the layers they worked good I've been in the studio the last month playing guitar it's been a lot of fun And it's been a great opportunity to use a professional studio at the sound tech school with my son
I really think we should be putting some blame on the mixing engineer. They didn't pitch correct the vocals or change any dynamics. Almost like they just pasted everything in, made sure it didn't clip, and exported it.
Love the wideness and clarity in your mix. And u surely know your way around dynamics. Superb! 🧨🧨🌟🌟. If I would compare your final product vs. fiverr artists I would say: Organic Vs. AI 😉😁💥🔥
Kurt Hugo Schneider did a Fivrr Song once. The song then was way way better than what you got out of those collaborations. I was really disappointed. Your song was superb as always. Just like your style so much. I would love to see more producers battles. Those are the most entertaining videos on your channel. Also looking forward to more songs plus videos on your second channel. You deserve far more views.
So now the bell doesn't work either? Decided to come check 'cause I haven't gotten a notification of you posting for a while. Turns out I missed like five videos, even though I have the bell set to notify me for all uploads.
Hey Nathan! Just wanted to ask - I bought your course a little while back and haven’t used it for a little bit but wanted to return and get back in the habit of doing so but can’t seem to access it. Why would this be?
can i ask where you get all your sounds? causer I feel that's the one thing I am missing with my music right now. I cant find good sounds with the basic plug-ins/asounds that logic pro gives you. Thye sound cheesy to me and i can't get over it.
Hey - I have an extensive set of sound libraries I use. But here's what I recommend that I love and use a LOT 1. Native Instruments (I have Komplete Ultimate Collectors - not cheap but you could literally use JUST this and have top tier records) 2. Output (just all their stuff is insanely good... Analog Strings, Analog Brass, Substance (insanely good bass library), and Signal - great stuff) Arcade is their loops based library - and I do sometimes use it for drum toppers (I used that on this production) but I dont use it much beyond that 3. Spitfire - if you like anything cinematic - it's incredible. All of it. Spitfire LABS is free - so definirely get that - it's a no brainer. 4. Hammers + Waves (by Skybox Audio) is by FAR my all time favorite keys library. It's more than just keys - it's kind of my secret sauce. Those three should basically get you everything you need.
Great video Nathan! I love your production style, but is it common to think Fiverr sellers can't provide high quality services, in your opinion? I wonder if Fiverr could be a good way to start selling production services without being perceived as a bad producer before listening to some of the works. Do you have an advice for someone who wants to start gaining some money in the music production world and aims to do it for a living?
I would definitely not say that there are not really talent to people on that platform. Of course there are. But I do think a lot of aspiring producers start there because they think it's an easier path but I just don't think that's true. In a lot of ways that platform is a race to the bottom. Who can charge the least amount? If that's you perspective - how can I charge the least amount then you are starting from a bad place in my opinion. The starting point should be about what value you offer to an artist. And determine the worth of that based on how high of value it is. Even for a music producer who is pretty early on I don't think should be charging less than $300 per song. And that's CHEAP. Standard Nashville rates are $3,000 to $5000 per song for a producer for independent rates (not label) so $300 is literally 10x less. If you wanna make money with this and do it as a job, then you gotta think about how much you're actually making per hour on the work you do. If you're charging $300 per song you're probably making way way under minimum wage. And if you're still pretty early on, then you're probably also spending way longer on that song than someone with my experience would. I don't get paid per hour because I can simply get more done per hour than most people. Which is why again you need to charge based on the value you provide. Which - for me - is the final product. It doesn't matter if it take 10 hours or 100. The product is what's being paid for - not my time I'm saying all of this, because Fiverr is not a platform made for people who think like this. So it just depends on what kind of producer you wanna be. For me I'd never want to play that game of "who can charge the least?" That also lends itself to getting really crappy clients. Funny enough I find the artist to pay me what I'm worth and also tend to be the easiest to work with.
As far as advice for getting started, and actually getting clients… First off, I do think that the music you make, does matter so other words focus on making extremely high-quality music. Like I said, in the above comment, if people are paying for the final product, then the final product actually matters in terms of quality, so if what you actually give them is simply not up to that standard then that's a huge problem. I'm not saying that you can't charge money if you are not at an absolute pro level but the truth is that if you're making incredible music. That is the easiest way to market yourself. I think it's really hard to get clients to market yourself if the music you make just isn't that good. Which is why I focus so heavily on making great music on this channel. If you are making good music, or at least music, that is close enough than I really do think that your focus should be on social media. Sharing your music on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, and actually building a producer brand and also starting to connect with artist that you enjoy, who are smaller and up-and-coming that you think you might be a good fit with I'd look up Dark Label here on TH-cam. My buddy Dan runs that and this is what they focus on.
@@NathanJamesLarsen Thanks a lot for this feedback, that's super valuable. Yes I know Dark Label, I follow the channel and I think it provides great advices. People (producers and engineers) around me say I should start with low budgets regardless of the quality I provide, but I'm not sure this is the right approach. Like you say, great music + social media content around it is the key. As an italian producer I was just wondering if I should communicate on social media in italian (and target the small Italy) or use english: that's another thing to consider when your native language is not english.
ok, to be fair, it sounds like none of the producers had the chance to collaborate with each other, so they couldn't exactly check in with each other to make sure their sounds fit together cohesively. they didn't know what each other's "angle" would be. also, because they were producing for a client rather than themselves, they were likely less inclined to take creative risks the way you did, because they didn't know 1.) if the client would like it and 2.) if it would fit in with the production choices of the other instruments.
Totally agree which is a pretty fair argument for the whole ending point which is that is usually doesn't turn out well when you try to puzzle piece things together like this. That's actually a big point or takeaway from it.
Come on, are you really need to challenge random amateurs from fiverr that are worth 100$ as a pro producer? Who will win - elephant or 5 ants? And as a randoms they had harder job than you had. Challenge me then, im taking 500$ vs your 5k$
Yes, I am actually gonna be moving everything just to my "Nathan James Larsen" spotify account to keep everything consolidated - instead of NJL. Have found that it's just easier to keep things under my name
I feel a bit unfair comparisson, being that you made a great musical production with coherence as you figured every part of the production from your perspective and direction. The fiverr guys is like a salad of performances put together without coherence and direction. It'd have been better to hire a producer that would do a similar job as you did for a decent price (500 minimum ) then compare it.
That's pretty much the point of the video. Hiring Fiverr musicians is basically useless without HEAVY direction - and even then it's very difficult to get great results without being present. Whenever I do live sessions (remote) - I am almost ALWAYS on a zoom call to give instruction / direction. Really the point of this is to show that if you don't have one person in charge and guiding/directing - it is almost impossible to get killer results.
Sooooo . . . throwing a bunch of musicians in blender sounds like a bunch of musicians thrown in a blender. This is no knock on any of the musicians who contributed. They didn't have any appropriate direction. Producers are the difference. They focus the entire project and give it a clear direction.
I make music on fiver… the fiver track on this was horrible lol. I’ve done a full track for $5 and I bet he’d give it a 10/10 compared to that (I charge more now) His version was great
yea the fiverr collab was terrible - i think 4.5 was generous. i have had over 200 fiverr orders and occasionally have subpar results. i usually spend many hours vetting sellers, so most of my experiences have been awesome. ur version definitely sounded pro. the vocal melody was a lil meh for me and one dimensional (performance was great given what she had) u def injected a tonne of dynamic into ur production having it sound fresh and commercial. a nice song promo vid :)
Nathan’s mix is night and day. Fiverr one was surprisingly poor. Song itself is pretty poor also. Shows you what a good mix and production can do though.
frankly, you got sub-par because you provided sub-par🤷♂️ you had the benefit of working towards a goal and vision; where no one you hired had much to work with. I may have missed it, but did you hire a vocalist too? Was that “final” product working with the vocal and keys tracks that you provided….and you yourself replaced…?😂
No, musicians were paid peanuts, then handed over the best they could justify for that amount of money to the cheapskate on the other end. Little did they know that the "Pro Producer" was going to mock them on his channel.
Nathan, one of the youtube producers that actually showcases his productions.
Yep I find it kind of weird how a lot of people making "producer content" never actually show their productions.
This man deserves worldwide recognition
Awww that's so nice to say. Maybe one day ;)
I think the issue is that to build something decent, you need to sample multiple options ranging from sub $100 through the ~$200-500 range. Might be interesting to see what happens if you spend $1,000 at each stage and picking the best from each stage to send to the next stage.
3:12 "this is what being a producer is really like" lol. That is SO reassuring 😂
This guy nailed it .. again .. man, I feel lucky to be watching these videos .. so relatable :)
This fiver guys stuff made me suspect that my bedroom production is not as bad as I used to think) Thank you for that feeling man)😂 and it's great to watch you in action, keep it up please
I actually just ordered a fiverr instrumental for $250 from a producer with 30 years of experience and after hearing the instrumental demo,
based on my instructions, I thought I could do a lot better with only 6 months of experience 😅
cool idea!!! always love your videos
You have a great talent mate, I enjoy watching your live streams, keep inspiring
Steve
Nathan you are such a big help thanks a ton man
I love this video format. So fun to watch and awesome to see small takeouts

Sounds great! Definitely the drum sounds and vocal layering in the fiverr version were the things that jumped out at first. Saylor's voice is great. That acoustic sound at the beginning is so nice.
You’re face when you heard the Fivver version??? Priceless 😂! Loved how your version was miles beyond Fivver version.
I like the Fiver track! It reminds me of those $10 CDs I used to buy at the clubs where indie artists performed back in the mid-90s.
Man’s tone deaf
Great sounding arrangement, well mixed and interesting from begin to end.
Love that! Thank you! That's the goal, right?
Mannn, so much respect!!! Congrats from Brazil!!! 🇧🇷
It was night and day the difference. Nathan your production is untouchable
I am an aspiring song writer and producer, and your videos have been a huge help. I wish I had the money to do your Producer Accelerator course, as it looks like an amazing program, but that is far out of the budget for me. Thanks, tho, for all of the great YT content. Even that yea he’s a lot!
so talented man!
I love how you show your progress!
I like the various ideas for content around creating music that you've got. Very interesting stuff, and the song was awesome too!
Being a producer is beatboxing the beats until it sounds right in the track 😂
Hahaha that is kind of true
Actually pretty shitty paying bottom dollar for musicians trying to make an honest living then laughing and making goofy faces at the result. P.S. this is Krissy texting 😁
Really cool video man. I enjoyed every part of it. Keep it up buddy!
Underrated producer
Yo Nathan. These videos are just the greatest. So inspirational my dude. Thank you!!!
Nathan, yours sounded so good! With headphones, it was next level.
Where can I find stuff like the sound in 5:13 ?
Where can I find your songs man. Huge fan of your productions
So underrated man!!..feels bad...you make us learn things with fun...may u get million views😌♥️
I love seeing your joy!!

I can't understand why this man hasn't been Grammy nominated at least!!
Your version sound clean and sweet👌
Thanks so much!
what you should have done, is put the files link in the vid description to see what random youtubers would do.

Hi Nathan, this is what we were able to put together for her first music video. Any thoughts?

What an amazing video! Awesome content and truly inspiring
Hey Nathan, I don’t know if you remember but about a year ago I reached out and asked for advice on how to start a TH-cam channel. 4:40-4:43 so relatable 😂😂😂😂 I know the feeling all too well
Bruh, this tune would sound amazing with a vocoder and intermittent instrumental silence on the chorus.
hey nathan james larsen do you do any ghostwriting rock music or co produce
I really love Saylor's voice, wow! Thanks for this! ☘💪🏽👀👍🏽☘
I liked this video, great song / production.
Before you mixed the vocals it was really bad but I like the way you did the second voice with the facts and hit it behind the layers they worked good I've been in the studio the last month playing guitar it's been a lot of fun And it's been a great opportunity to use a professional studio at the sound tech school with my son

Wow, you´re so talented!. New sub 🙌
I really think we should be putting some blame on the mixing engineer. They didn't pitch correct the vocals or change any dynamics. Almost like they just pasted everything in, made sure it didn't clip, and exported it.
In fairness to them - it's not a mix engineers job to tune vocals. But the mix was definitely not what I would expect from a professional.
Love it
Great work. Would love to mix it as a gift to you
Hey man where do I contact you if I want you to listen to a production I made?
Your base song is really cool IMHO

WANK - BANG - THUNG 😃
nathan! I love your content!! do you do live feedback these days?
Yeah, you can't buy a pro producer for 100$. Great song arrangement! Nate, you killed it.
I'd kill it too,
Yo I’ve produced like 200 tracks the last 8 months just for practice I’d take $100 happily lmfao
So now the bell doesn't work either? Decided to come check 'cause I haven't gotten a notification of you posting for a while. Turns out I missed like five videos, even though I have the bell set to notify me for all uploads.
I wanna get in on this
Hey Nathan! Just wanted to ask - I bought your course a little while back and haven’t used it for a little bit but wanted to return and get back in the habit of doing so but can’t seem to access it. Why would this be?
Oh man somehow I missed this comment! So sorry!!

Sharing your music on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, and actually building a producer brand and also starting to connect with artist that you enjoy, who are smaller and up-and-coming that you think you might be a good fit with
I'd look up Dark Label here on TH-cam.
@@NathanJamesLarsen true, I did notice you said that it sounds better when each instrument has their own pocket in the end!
🎬I really like your channel! It's always entertaining to follow you! Thanks Nathan!🎹🎸
Dude you totally killed it!! I love this song!! The other one was not very good at all. Keep making great content my guy!! Much ❤ Nathan!!
for f sake release this please
Come on, are you really need to challenge random amateurs from fiverr that are worth 100$ as a pro producer? Who will win - elephant or 5 ants? And as a randoms they had harder job than you had. Challenge me then, im taking 500$ vs your 5k$
i love this guy
Hey Nathan, How can I produce your song as a proyect for you? And let me know what you think? please let me know I would love to!
Any way i can inquire about your compensation to be my ptoducer? I am serious😊
Appreciate you asking. but I don't do client work anymore... have my own projects I focus on exclusively.
Are you adding more new songs to your official streaming platforms (Spotify and the likes)? You’ve got a lot of nice songs to listen to.
They focus the entire project and give it a clear direction.
you can hire me next time 😁
He is the best
A bad song is a bad song no matter who produces it
Perfect my teacher...by the way I'm one of your new student..
I make music on fiver… the fiver track on this was horrible lol. I’ve done a full track for $5 and I bet he’d give it a 10/10 compared to that (I charge more now)
His version was great
definitely worth a 100$
Level match makes much less difference !
yea the fiverr collab was terrible - i think 4.5 was generous. i have had over 200 fiverr orders and occasionally have subpar results. i usually spend many hours vetting sellers, so most of my experiences have been awesome. ur version definitely sounded pro. the vocal melody was a lil meh for me and one dimensional (performance was great given what she had) u def injected a tonne of dynamic into ur production having it sound fresh and commercial. a nice song promo vid :)
Wow your so cool.. much better than those Fiverr musicains...
there is no reasson why this video shoudlnt have 500k views at least
I got your email but an not sure am good enough to be produce now I need more room exercise and come back later
Can I take a stab at it? I’d love the practice :)
Bro, great to see you playing. Rather than preaching. Just like when you started out. Back in the day… Long time follower. Just sayin.
Nathan’s mix is night and day. Fiverr one was surprisingly poor. Song itself is pretty poor also. Shows you what a good mix and production can do though.
The dissapointment in your Face 🫠
Well, you get what you pay for. 🤣
Yep indeed
Fivver 4/10 ----- Nathan 8.7/10
frankly, you got sub-par because you provided sub-par🤷♂️
you had the benefit of working towards a goal and vision; where no one you hired had much to work with.
I may have missed it, but did you hire a vocalist too? Was that “final” product working with the vocal and keys tracks that you provided….and you yourself replaced…?😂
@@leanpalma8061 cry baby cry
This is pro? Bro your guitar is not even in tune 😢
Wow fiver musicians really suck
No, musicians were paid peanuts, then handed over the best they could justify for that amount of money to the cheapskate on the other end. Little did they know that the "Pro Producer" was going to mock them on his channel.
First.
