    Gotta Say Eric, I so appreciate your tireless devotion to the hobby! Because of you, Josh, the other Josh, and Bob, I dove right in, bought myself a JumboSpot and an Anytone AT878 Plus, set everything up (building a code plug and all) and started working contacts all over the place. It was simple and easy, and that was because of all your hard work. I really appreciate it!!! Thank you so much!!!

    I can't thank you enough for this video. I picked up a JumboSpot on Amazon and followed your setup video and was on air right away. I just set my Raspberry Pi up from scratch yesterday to run Pi-Star, it is not that difficult, did find an issue with WiFi running WEP (I have an old media player in the house). Using WPA was far easier. Today another Raspberry Pi arrived in the post and that took very little time to set up. I only found your video subsequent to setting mine up but it is nevertheless helpful.

    Please note, you can't turn off Duplex when setting up a new memory for your Hotspot. If you do, the set will skip the entry and you will not be able to use the Hotspot. Leave duplex turned on and set
    Offset to 000.000. The set will now see the Hotspot entry and not Skip it.

    Have just bought one and got it running after a couple of days. I had an issue with the pre-programmed sd card so that the device would not boot.
    Solved by downloading an image from pi-star (I chose the latest generic version - v4 beta RC2), clearing the card and creating a new logical partition using EaseUS Partition Master (free), flashed the card using Etcher (free) and shazaam!

    Excellent tutorial, however, it's a shame you decided to use a frequency within the satellite band plan more so for one of the active FM satellites AO-92 which is experiencing a large amount of uplink interference from DSTAR/DMR etc on this frequency.
    I believe the latest MMDVM firmware does have a limitation in place now, but not all users upgrade.
    Perhaps the video could be corrected to use a frequency somewhere more appropriate.

    Question: I have a Jumbospot on order and is now in the country and on its way. I already have a GD-77 I will use with it. Something I am unsure of is when I want to join a talk group do I just go to the channel on my radio where I have programmed in the frequency of my jumbospot and a talk group and just for a split second key up? Even though I have had the radio about a year I have never used it in DMR because I live in a deep, narrow valley where my signals can't reach any local repeaters, so the hotspot is my only option. I just want to learn how to work it before it gets here so I can roll with it as soon as it shows up.

    I have the Anytone 878 ht and the MMDVM hotspot. I followed the procedure in this video to setup the hotspot(pi-star).
    Also could not determine the TX/RX offsets. Documentation is very poor so I'm using 0/0 for offsets. The problem is
    that there is no gateway activity shown in the pi-star dashboard or local rf activity. Any ideas on what I might check first?
    The radio was programmed with a codeplug designed for my state(TN) which I got from the Bridgecom website.

    I have found lots on TH-cam about the Jumbo spot end of this and definitely helped to get it working ... little on the RADIO side of things and how to set up there. I know that the RADIO settings for DStar using the Jumbo spot are different than for the DV Mega - offset and call routing entries - How should the DMR units be set up... as simple as the freq and color code or other subtle settings required.

    This seems like a hotspot for me. This model is also 2m compatible right? So I would need to use 2m band antenna, or dual band. 70cm DMR band creates interference with my PC speakers. Is the frequency entered in the hotspot an analogue or digital frequency? I guess digi, but want to make sure I do not disturb locals if it's in FM. Thnx.

    This is a good starter video to show what this unit can and can't do. I will be putting mine together in my own little package. I'm going to leave out the display and probably add a battery. I was fiddling with the idea of giving it a modem as well. It would be interesting to slap a SIM card in and go. There are lot's of possibilities with such a modular system. Already owning the RPI the total cost of ownership is pretty low. It's too bad it can't cross encode like the big boys can.

    in the Root of the SDcard or in the Boot? Maybe many things have changed since this video because they now ask for country in that page and I dont see how to get access to the root of the SDcard using a Windows PC, I can get access to the boot partition but not the root, Anyways that conf file is not doing anything so far, I opened with notepad and the lines with the SSID and password are commented out, tried uncomenting them but still not working. Going to install a fresh image of Pistar to see what happens, maybe is the image that came from factory that is probably wrong. I just wanted to point out the root vs boot partition on PI's

    So question ... if I join using my P25 Motorola's, can I then partake in the DMR talkgroups or is each mode totally independant in mode AND network/tg to each other?
    In regards to the talkgroups, is the talkgroup selected and locked by the the mmdvm or is it able to change tg's like dmr or p25 trunking? Where or what sets that talkgroup?
    What's the chances of getting 2 of these on the same frequency running at the same time on different time slots for different talkgroups?
    We've only just been permitted at my level to play in digital and it's about time I branch out from P25 commercial.

When i first got it out of the box this morning, I plugged it into my computer to power on... in about 2-3 minutes the device turned on and seem to be working fine. I found it on my computers list of available wifi list, i think i got it all set up with the pistar website. Then I unplugged it to move it closer to my radio and now it one power back on all the way. I tried unplugging it, plugging it back in and waiting, and i tried using the other port that also powers it.. with no luck.
    I can see the green light and red blinking light, so it's getting power but it wont turn on all the way. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I didn't realize how big of a pain this would be just to use d-star.

      When you write the SD card with Etcher you can search your Windows GUI and it will see it as two drives (one section is not readable) you copy the file to the section of the drive that is visible (Boot). Cancel any warnings from Windows about a drive needing formatting. TBH if you have an ethernet cable kicking around you can skip the wifi config file and do it all through the dashboard. The one I set up today I did the other method. If you just power the thing up without any network connections after a while it will adverrtise itself as a wireless access point called Pi-Star_Setup (or something similar)... very easy then.

    Thanks for the video. Can't get mine working. On my dashboard bottom right under DMR Repeater block ID shows up CC 1 shows up TS1 shows disabled TS2 shows enabled under that it shows[ not linked/not linked ]. Any ideas on why it's not linking? wifi shows ok About ready to see what a 44 mag will do to a jumbo spot

      You have the radio programmed for the appropriate timeslot and talkgroup? The same DMR ID in both the radio and the hotspot? When you press PTT on the talkgroup you want, does it link the hotspot? It does not link to anything unless you press PTT.

      Thanks for the reply. Yea double checked all that. Setup just the way you have it, will not recognize any talk group after PTT. Supplier suggested updating firmware on mmdvm hat. Did that still nothing but the scrolling MMDVM Guess I'm one of the people that got one of the bad boards going around.

    Thanks for the video. I've been looking at these and other hotspots. I'm still new to all of this. If the device loses power, does it corrupt the OS or do you have to do a power down before unplugging it from a power source? Is there anyway to have multiple SSIDs like if you wanted to use it at home and work or would you have to change the config or maybe easier to have two sd cards, one for home config and one for work config...

    • @HamRadioConcepts
      @HamRadioConcepts  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is set to read only so it does not corrupt. And you can have multiple config for wifi on same unit. Switches networks automatically.

    • @dwayne5530
      @dwayne5530 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks...Do you do the multiple SSIDs through the dashboard or edit the conf file on a PC? I may wind up picking one of these things up. Still researching. Are you selling the others through a website store front? Good to hear you don't have to worry about it corrupting although I'd image the card after getting it set up completely just in case.

      What do you mean when you say "If the device loses power" Dapper ?? Are you talking about an event where there might be a power outage at home or if the battery (Which is what I assume powers the thing when not plugged in) runs out of juice ?? #Confused

      @dwayne5530 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Already been answered for me Pat. I was asking if the JumboSpot itself lost power either AC or using a battery pack would you risk the SD card corrupting. It's read only so it's not a problem.

    HeLP!!!! I accidentally hit the AP auto button (turned off) and now I can't access the jumbospot. How do I fix it? is it possible to get another micro sd card with the software on it if need be?

    WHAT DO YOU PLUG THE HOTSPOT INTO WHEN PROGRAMING

  • @KoljaMineralka

    so what's the purpose of this thing ? You use home internet to transmit radio ? I'm trying to understand the practical usage of this thing. Thx

    • @HamRadioConcepts
      @HamRadioConcepts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      KoljaMineralka you talk into your handheld or desktop radio which is transmitting into the hotspot.the hotspot sends it over internet to the repeater or reflector you.choose. it goes back to RF on the other person's radio
      I use mine in the car, tethered to my phone wifi hotspot. My id5100 in my vehicle talking to this keeps me in contact with people hundreds of miles away when I don't have repeater cpverage

    just a word of advise on nxdn and p25.. make sure it is legal for AMATEUR use in your state. Seen as the sherifs dept also uses the same concept.. id recommand sticking to ham dmr ( dstar pdmr etc..) avoids your hotspot being confiscated

    I have one DMR ID. It is in my portable DMR radio. Do I have to apply for an extra DMR ID to put in this hotspot, or do I use the same ID in the hotspot as I already have? Indead interesting device.

    • @HamRadioConcepts
      @HamRadioConcepts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You put your DMR id in the hotspot, the same that is in your radio.

    • @kb0oxd
      @kb0oxd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      UNLESS you already have a radio & Hotspot assigned to that ID (In which case you need to change one of the Hotspots to another ID (From what Craig, W1MSG said in a video on his channel, it appears as though all you need to do in THAT event is to change JUST ONE number on one of your Hotspots in order for it to route properly (You CANNOT do it on your radio)

    • @Ztbmrc1

      I have no hotspot yet, I am considering buying one. But let me get things clear. I guess when I transmit with my radio through my hotspot, on the net I will be shown with the ID in the hotspot, not the ID in the radiio, correct? So I could enter a imaginary ID in my radio since it does not go further than my Hotspot?

    • @HamRadioConcepts
      @HamRadioConcepts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of all the hotspots I have and have had, I use one DMR ID, mine.. In the radio, and in the hotspot. No issues at all...Now if you are talking about running multiple hotspots at the same time, I am not sure why anyone would run 4 at one time, when my hotspots do all 5 modes anyways on one unit.

    I see that you mentioned about the config file being generated and needs to be copy to your SD card. Is this the on the JumboSpot or what? You were not being very specific about that. In fact showing how to do this would have been nice. Second I see in the Dashboard that TS1 is disabled and TS2 is enabled. My codeplug uses TS1. Is there anyway to ammend this choice on the hotspot? I appreciate any help you can give regarding this.

    • @HamRadioConcepts
      @HamRadioConcepts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should till work on your codeplug using TS1.. That only applies to a repeater. The only reason I mentioned it was to make it routine as with other dmr programming. As far as the wifi config.. Simply download the file, put the sd card in your computer, it will come up with 2 partitions on the SD card. DO NOT FORMAT!! D.O. N.O.T. F.O.R.M.A.T. the SD card. Just throw that config file you downloaded onto the "boot" partition of the sd card and put it back into your jumbospot.

    Please edit the video to change the freq. This freq is in the satellite band, and, for US hams, auxiliary stations are banned from this sub-band (145.8 to 146.0 and 435 to 438 MHz).
