Gotta Say Eric, I so appreciate your tireless devotion to the hobby! Because of you, Josh, the other Josh, and Bob, I dove right in, bought myself a JumboSpot and an Anytone AT878 Plus, set everything up (building a code plug and all) and started working contacts all over the place. It was simple and easy, and that was because of all your hard work. I really appreciate it!!! Thank you so much!!!

I can't thank you enough for this video. I picked up a JumboSpot on Amazon and followed your setup video and was on air right away. The setup was so easy to follow and I've been having a great time with it. I don't have a DSTAR repeater close enough to me to hit so this is awesome! Thank's again!

I just set my Raspberry Pi up from scratch yesterday to run Pi-Star, it is not that difficult, did find an issue with WiFi running WEP (I have an old media player in the house). Using WPA was far easier. Today another Raspberry Pi arrived in the post and that took very little time to set up. I only found your video subsequent to setting mine up but it is nevertheless helpful.

This is a good starter video to show what this unit can and can't do. I will be putting mine together in my own little package. I'm going to leave out the display and probably add a battery. I was fiddling with the idea of giving it a modem as well. It would be interesting to slap a SIM card in and go. There are lot's of possibilities with such a modular system. Already owning the RPI the total cost of ownership is pretty low. It's too bad it can't cross encode like the big boys can.

I have found lots on TH-cam about the Jumbo spot end of this and definitely helped to get it working ... little on the RADIO side of things and how to set up there. I know that the RADIO settings for DStar using the Jumbo spot are different than for the DV Mega - offset and call routing entries - How should the DMR units be set up... as simple as the freq and color code or other subtle settings required.

Excellent tutorial, however, it's a shame you decided to use a frequency within the satellite band plan more so for one of the active FM satellites AO-92 which is experiencing a large amount of uplink interference from DSTAR/DMR etc on this frequency.
I believe the latest MMDVM firmware does have a limitation in place now, but not all users upgrade.
Perhaps the video could be corrected to use a frequency somewhere more appropriate.

With the release of Pi-Star 3.4.11, it now has a Auto AP Feature/Mode (default is on as you even show in the configuration), so you no longer need to run the WiFi Builder. Give it about 2-5 minutes after initial power up, you will then see a WiFi SSID saying something like "PiStar" or "Pi-Star".

Please note, you can't turn off Duplex when setting up a new memory for your Hotspot. If you do, the set will skip the entry and you will not be able to use the Hotspot. Leave duplex turned on and set
Offset to 000.000. The set will now see the Hotspot entry and not Skip it.

Solved by downloading an image from pi-star (I chose the latest generic version - v4 beta RC2), clearing the card and creating a new logical partition using EaseUS Partition Master (free), flashed the card using Etcher (free) and shazaam!

Question: I have a Jumbospot on order and is now in the country and on its way. I already have a GD-77 I will use with it. Something I am unsure of is when I want to join a talk group do I just go to the channel on my radio where I have programmed in the frequency of my jumbospot and a talk group and just for a split second key up? Even though I have had the radio about a year I have never used it in DMR because I live in a deep, narrow valley where my signals can't reach any local repeaters, so the hotspot is my only option. I just want to learn how to work it before it gets here so I can roll with it as soon as it shows up.

I have the Anytone 878 ht and the MMDVM hotspot. I followed the procedure in this video to setup the hotspot(pi-star).
Also could not determine the TX/RX offsets. Documentation is very poor so I'm using 0/0 for offsets. The problem is
that there is no gateway activity shown in the pi-star dashboard or local rf activity. Any ideas on what I might check first?
The radio was programmed with a codeplug designed for my state(TN) which I got from the Bridgecom website.

This seems like a hotspot for me. This model is also 2m compatible right? So I would need to use 2m band antenna, or dual band. 70cm DMR band creates interference with my PC speakers. Is the frequency entered in the hotspot an analogue or digital frequency? I guess digi, but want to make sure I do not disturb locals if it's in FM. Thnx.

I Got One. First thing I did is look at the antenna. It looked too short for UHF HAM Band, so I checked it on my Antenna analyzer and Guess what Eric, it was Way Off the Band Resonating at
560 MHz. Yes it is UHF but wont work at all with any HAM radio. So I replaced the Antenna with one that Resonate Properly on UHF HAM BAND. Specifically at FM Simplex (433-->435).
So Recommendation to all, Check the Antenna Always. i'm watching your video to set up mine, it Didn't Come with any Printed instructions on paper at all, beside the one posted from the listing where I bought from, and even those instructions were incomprehensible. It didn't even light up at all, it's going back. Thanks for the Awesome Videos. 73's

So question ... if I join using my P25 Motorola's, can I then partake in the DMR talkgroups or is each mode totally independant in mode AND network/tg to each other?
In regards to the talkgroups, is the talkgroup selected and locked by the the mmdvm or is it able to change tg's like dmr or p25 trunking? Where or what sets that talkgroup?
What's the chances of getting 2 of these on the same frequency running at the same time on different time slots for different talkgroups?

it wasn't nearly this easy for me. Im having issues getting mine to power on all the way. When i first got it out of the box this morning, I plugged it into my computer to power on... in about 2-3 minutes the device turned on and seem to be working fine. I found it on my computers list of available wifi list, i think i got it all set up with the pistar website. Then I unplugged it to move it closer to my radio and now it one power back on all the way. I tried unplugging it, plugging it back in and waiting, and i tried using the other port that also powers it.. with no luck.
I can see the green light and red blinking light, so it's getting power but it wont turn on all the way. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I didn't realize how big of a pain this would be just to use d-star.

You can get the parts to assemble this unit from Ebay for approximately $58. You just have to do a little searching is all. The MMDVM module is from China with about a 3 week ship time and the other items are US vendors. Basically this is just a "plug & play" type assembly. If you can solder PL-259 connector to coax then this is a breeze. I noticed Erik didn't reply to the person who mentioned the frequency chosen was in the satellite band plan for amateurs. The ARRL Band Chart show for Satellite only (internationally) band is: 435.00 - 438.00.
Perhaps a better area would the one allocated for Mixed-mode and weak-signal work which is: 432.30 - 433.00 www.arrl.org/band-plan

My Jumbospot got two weeks ago requires TX/RXoffset 500 (not negative like yours), and P25=offset+500. Is it correct figure ?

Anyone else notice at the end of a transmission on YSF Fusion, the audio level will spike? I have noticed it a lot in the Americas Link room.

Eric if you use 1 hotspot for dmr and dstar how do you keep, say the dstar radio from picking up the digital signal when a dmr transmission comes through? This just happened to me lol

you turn off the modes except the one you are using. I only keep 1 mode on at a time it gets confusing when multiple modes are on

Please edit the video to change the freq. This freq is in the satellite band, and, for US hams, auxiliary stations are banned from this sub-band (145.8 to 146.0 and 435 to 438 MHz). Please refer to www.arrl.org/news/digital-mobile-radio-hotspots-may-be-interfering-with-satellite-uplinks-amsat-reports

QUICK QUESTION Eric - Since the Hotspot requires a formatted SD Card, wouldn't a typical Android smartphone be able to do what an SD Card Reader can do IF you delete any files & folders that Android puts on there ??
If so, I've got PLENTY of OLD SMARTPHONES !! :)

Great Video, Recently retired ham is one of my hobbies. I have DMR radios and DMR callsign number but the repeaters were too far. You answered my questions right away on what it does as far as connecting to the DMR world. I may purchase this soon now that I recently got internet. Thank You and hope you don't mind if I at some points in the future I ask more questions.KE6MIT
