@@n3vmt126 both will work
@@temporarilyofflineHi Steve. Thanks for the video. I wonder if you would know why my callsign shows up on the WPSD dashboard with a “-Y” after it. I’m also not sure, but I don’t really seem to be connected and have everything set to link to TOADS when the hotspot boots up. I am unable to connect to the hotspot with my FT3D. I’m beginning to wonder if I have a bad modem. Any thoughts as to what I might check with my settings?
@@BobGarrett66 if I were in your shoes, I would be very meticulous, factory reset the radio, rebuild the hot spot and dot all my i's and cross all my t's... And if that didn't work, I'd buy the cheapest (non-testible)link and star again. I'm now so far in that I have 2x fusion radios and 3x hotspots... Plenty of test fodder. Give it a shot and let me know.
@@temporarilyoffline Okay. Thanks. I may have to try a few more ideas before deciding to reset the radio. I’m really curious as to why my callsign shows up with the “-Y” after it. I have 3 hotspots as well and took my D-Star hotspot and set up YSF on it. No love. D-Star works like a dream though. Go figure. Exact same Pi. Exact same MMDVM, but the YSF hotspot doesn’t want to talk to the FT3D. I would be more inclined to think it is something with the radio, except I can connect just fine to a local repeater with fusion. Grrrrrrrr……. Thanks for the quick reply and the ideas.
Linux trick, if you forget sudo you can type "sudo !!" to repeat the last command but with sudo in front.
Bang Bang -- I do that all the time! Thanks for posting!
This was really good, clear, easy to follow, no unaddressed decision points in the process! I'm going to actually do this!!!
You got this! Be sure to reach out of you have any questions, happy to help!
Thanks Steve, I watched some other videos and ended up more confused so I gave up...Then I found this video and now I have YSF up and running!!! Thanks again.
Excellent, Glad it helped!
Converted two of my hot spots over to the W0CHP dashboard. Only took a total of 30 minutes and two beers. Thanks for the video! 73
Nice work! I like the W0CHP dashboard!
Already up and running. Thanks for the quick and simple video Steve setting up.
No problem 👍
Going to do this with my Zumspot. Thanks for another great video, Steve.
You're welcome Matt!
That worked for me, thanks for the guide
Glad it helped!
Really awesome & very comprehensive & easy to follow video TO.
Thanks also for sharing the trick to find a MMDVM modem which is super helpful.
Can you also please do another video for the same dashboard using DMR (hopefully DMR also has TOADS) as I only have an Anytone 878UVII plus DMR HT.
Take care & safe travels!
Glad it helped! - I've put it on the list!
Thanks Steve for posting this video on how to set up WPSD, I think the layout of this page is better than Pi-star digital voice. Thanks again. Cheers TR.
You're welcome. I think the update is perfect and looks to be continuing development with Chip now.
This is next up on my to-do list!
I'm gonna hold you to that.
Very well done tutorial!
Thank you!
Excellent video. Did not know you could connect Wires-X when connected to the hotspot, so thank you for showing this and explaining it. I too use a FT-70 mostly for working my Hotspots. 73 KN4VA
You can only connect to Wires-X if the Wires-X room is bridged to YSF. The pi-star systems don't connect to Wires-X directly, only YSF
@@FEPLabsRadio Thanks for the further clarification.
You are welcome!
Great Video Steve, I'm intrigued by the Pi-Star version you have there. It seems better than the one i'm using for sure.
Its a continuation of pi-star, Even has an easy upgrade path. Make an image of your SD card and upgrade... or just start fresh.
@@temporarilyoffline Yep, I've got the image ready to go. Thanks Steve. Top vid.
this is awesome thank you
You're very welcome!
Wow Genius, tnx man!
You got it!
I'm still waiting for Hayden VK7HH to get his FT-5d on the air! Yes he's finally on dmr and in the process of dstar, so maybe c4fm will be next!
Me too!
This is an AWESOME video. I have 4 Hotspots and they are GREAT!!
I need to figure out how all of them work on a single hotspot - not enough real estate.
@@temporarilyoffline It's tough to listen to multiple formats on one Pi because they can't all talk at once, so you end up missing traffic.
@@temporarilyoffline Which is why I have so many 🙂
Yet another Quickie, but a Goodie 🙂
Glad you liked it. I thought it was too long!
W0CHP's dashboard is really nice compared to the regular pi-star. Amazing work. Great tutorial on how to get it setup. Hope to catch you on TOADS one of these days.. Take care, safe travels buddy !
I like it quite a bit!
I hope this gets more folks on YSF reflectors! A lot of the ones I frequent are pretty dead, and it's disheartening.
DMR has better marketing, YSF is easier to use and sounds better. I think it's a cost of entry thing.
❗🤷🏾♂️🤣 Easy !
Yeah, it wasn't as bad as DMR!
Great video Steve, but I have a question what are the other C's for C1-5 with in the wires on the ft70dr?
I believe that's where you can store a few of your favorite rooms for quick recall - I didn't want to go too deep into the FT-70's inner workings in this video
@@temporarilyoffline I figured it out. After you have selected the room, the radio should have put you in the channel CN, pressing 1 through 5 stores the room to memory.
This is awesome and I used this video to get mine up and running fast! Question… do you know if there is a way to have it check for more than one WiFi SSID at boot? I don’t have a screen on my pi and I would love to configure it such that when you boot it first it checks for my home WiFi and if no then it goes onto my cell phones hotspot WiFi … you think this is possible?
Yes, look up wpa_suoplicant.conf syntax, there is a way to specify many networks and prioritize them.
@@temporarilyofflinedude you are awesome thank you!!! This stuff is amazing. Just got my FT5DR setup and am now talking on one digital repeater to KC Wide and America Net on the pi both at the same time on the A/B of this dual radio. Now that you have solved this I can grab this pi and a usb battery bank and go anywhere! GAME ON! Thanks again!!! Maybe I will talk to you out there one day. KF0OPA
I am just starting out in Ham radio and got Anytone 878 after passing my test as the closest repeater to me for both analog and digital is DMR. You wouldn't believe how much hate I got for asking about a pistar hotspot on our local Facebook group... Very bad 1st impression
You're welcome here. Join us on the TOADs discord (link in description) and we have a #digital-voice room and lots of helpful people.
one question , i do have to click on link every time after i disconnected from wires X? is there a way to get it to stay on? also seems unwilling to change groups when typing in the group number
I don't think you have to click on anything after the dashboard is setup. You should be able to link up with just the radio.
I would like to know if I have other hotspots on this freq but are not Yaesu radios will there be interference? ie. DSTAR, TGIF etc? Sorry for the noobe question.
It's a good question... It would only be a problem if you were on two busy talk groups at the same time due to "capture effect" where the first/loudest would block the other from TXing to your handheld. It's easier just to pick a different frequency for each so you don't block yourself.
Can you say what ports and rules need to be made to your firewall to allow for this to work behind one? Thank you.
I didn't have to open any ports on my firewall for this to work.
@@temporarilyoffline Ok thanks man. That's what most people are saying. Maybe it's my VPN that's causing problems.
do you have to take sd card and put the Wi-Fi name on it if running an ethernet connection ?
I've never done that, but you shouldn't need to, wired > wifi security
Im getting "could not establish IP" on my screen. The Pi is showing up in IP Scanner and is blue so the network knows its there but its not connecting to the dashboard
What program are you seeing "'could not establish ip" in?
BTW…another radio is the 991A.
Thanks!
Ok,I bought a elite 3.5 lcd zumspot, and it came with a configured mini SD card, booted it up got the dashboard on the computer linked the wifi to both the node, and the laptop, and configured the ft70d to the node, put in all required information, and the radio keys up fine, on the hotspot shows up on the dashboard, but no traffic off the internet? Any suggestions? Thanks 😊
My first guess is that the radio is in split mode (or repeater offset) - when you key up, does the radio change frequency?
@temporarilyoffline the radio is in simplex ,freq 434.600, same as the node, when you key it comes up on the dashboard, that seems to work well it's just that no one else comes up, we tried America link, toads, c4fm world wide, and others, nothing from the internet, I know it's hard to guess, but you seem to be the most knowledgeable of others, hro and Julian, were two years out of date and their 7zip wouldn't upload, also we didn't flash anything because we were worried that to reformat would DISTROY the program, when we got everything up on the wifi the dashboard came up on the computer.
Steve I appreciate your input, and will keep playing with it if you think 🤔 of anything else let me know, and happy new year 🎉 😀 😊
I'm back at my desk now and can take a look. This appears to be a Pi4 based unit. So next up I would power the unit off gracefully, remove the SD card that it came with, Label it and stick it aside. Then I'd follow this tutorial with a new SD card from walmart or laying around (needs to be at least 8gb, but doesn't really need to be fast/awesome)
You'll need to use the wpsd-detectmodem command to find your hat's name and maybe play with the display settings (but zero zumspot display isn't going to stop it from doing radio stuff).
Let me know!
@temporarilyoffline Thank you Steve, I am operating portable from Denver CO, have been for a week, my daughter and son in law helped me setup the pistar, and we all had a great 👍 time doing it, headed back home in the morning, and will be mobile on 10 meter, 2 meter, and 70 cm, we all like your site and will keep in touch, thanks again for your help I will get on that chat room once home, we are so close, I am excited to open a whole new mode, and look forward to watching your videos and getting out on the net, Happy New Year 😀 👍 😊
no luck on my end, going to try another pi
Did you get any error messages or indications of failure?
No messages or errors. Everything looked fine during the process, but the PI never booted up. I saw green lights and a red every few seconds
@@KN4OKadventuresDid you have a screen plugged in to the pi via HDMI? I don't know how long you waited, but on first boot up, the pi will re-size the file system and reboot 1-2 times before finally coming up to be useable. If you didn't "wait long enough", then everything could still be fine... or another pi might be needed. Keep pluggin!
@@temporarilyofflineI did, but I am going to try again today. Mine is the pi3 and I have a pi4 coming tomorrow.
@@KN4OKadventures sweet!
also works with the ft-400dr you skipped it but that's fine (hi hi)
Can't list 'em all ;-)
@@temporarilyoffline was giving you a little grief but otherwise I really enjoy your vids . Setting up my 3dr and one of pi's to join toads.getting ready to est it now
@@n3vmt126 I got it - keep it coming.

Great video. This is a fantastic upgrade but, as mentioned, don't do it on a zero w - it'll crawl. Pi zero 2w (upgraded cpu) are slowly becoming available, but if you can't wait for the zero 2w, then a Pi model 3 A+ is a good alternative and a bit easier to find. They have dual frequency wifi (5GHz nice!) but the form factor is, well it is what it is.
It is only slow for the config page and a few other big ones. Once it is configure it runs just fine on a Zero. Sure if someone can get the better Pi option at MSRP then go for it but I certainly wouldn't worry about running it on a Zero. One of mine is and works great.
It was slow at times on my Pi4! But honestly, once it works, no need to mess with it anymore.
Right! Sometimes I tell people to install it on a bigger/faster Pi and then move it to an older forgotten pi. It'll be fine.
Seems like every mmdmv I see says it's not RPi4 compatible.
I don't even know where I got this one. I plugged it into an RPi4 and it worked fine. Try it if you've got a spare(ish) Pi.
Dumb question? Can I add an external attena to this device.
The mmdvm board used an SMA connector. You can add a bigger antenna, but you might overload the receiver... might not, and they are cheap enough to try it out.
@temporarilyoffline thanks been wondering if overloading the receiver might be an issue, but I can get them for a couple hundred here, so yeah, I guess I can Frick around and find out.
The mmdvm board itself should be much cheaper, it's a minefield, but try Ali express?
Instead of going through all of that, you could all just get on a Zoom call.
TIMTOWTDI, yep
Yeah we could, but where is the fun in that ?
You missed the FTM-100DR the best one of them all!!!! HOW DARE YOU !!!!!!!!! lol
Ha! Only so much time... I missed a lot of them!
0:03 The guy that run W0CHP is a jerk. He doesn't take to criticism very lightly. I recommend staying with the original dashboard.
I've talked to Chip a few times, he sure does have personality. He does appreciate contribution over criticism.
