How to Increase Storage on Firestick 4K with USB Flash Drive

- This tutorial will teach you how to increase storage on Firestick 4K with a USB flash drive and free app called Remote ADB Shell.
One of the most annoying features of the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K is that it only comes with 8GB of storage. After the Amazon system apps are added, there is approximately 5GB left.
Luckily, we can expand storage on the Firestick 4K just like we can on the Amazon Fire TV Cube and older Fire TV Boxes with this secret hack.
To complete this tutorial you will need the following.

Can you use this method on a Fire tv box 2nd generation?
*I brought a 32 GB USB and I formatted it by (Fat32) I attached the formatted USB to a OTG Adapter and my fire stick and the Fire Stick software version 77/3027) Serial Version G070VM1190450T03. The Fire Stick doesn't recognize the USB Drive in the EZ File exploder. Is there anything that I can do to fix this problem? Do I have the right Fire stick for this method?*

Absolutely the best Firestick tutorial on TH-cam. Clear and concise instructional
1. There should be a better way to copy the APP name and Disk data # so you can transfer file to the USB. This process is entirely to long if you want to move APP's.
2. There may also be a way to do the transfer from the Fire Stick itself to the USB.
3. What APP's need to remain on the Fire Stick to keep it working.

Hi, I have already done this by using your steps and today I Tried to go back and move another app to the flash drive and I must have done something wrong. Not all my apps on flash drive are gone and I don’t know how how to fix this problem. It’s says external flash was removed but it still plugged in. Can u help me with this?

Appreciate the work you have put into this. My issue is that repetitively typing a massive string just to move an app using only the D-pad on a remote is insane. There needs to be an an easier way to move the package files to the internal drive!
Load ADB on your laptop and take remote control of your device. You can open a text doc on laptop and cut & paste to device.
Thank You! Success! After I worked out some of the glitches It worked fine. Just so if you get any questions. My UGreen USB ports did not wwork on my 4K, neither did the Ethernet connector. I used the Amazon Ethernet adapter and the OTG cable directly to my 4K and it got the job done.
What setup did you use to get your Ethernet adapter to pass through the otg cable. I lost my hard wired connection when setting this up. If I take the otg cable off and return to original setup, I get it back
@@Oneyejack59 are you using the Amazon ethernet adapter to the OTG cable? That’s the only thing I did different from the video. I had the UGreen USB Adapter with Ethernet but it must be defective.

Having to do this all over again because the recent update is FUBAR. Removed all access to USB and began restarting the Firestick. Did the SafeMode keyboard trick to Factory Reset and now begins the install. Thanks for showing us how.

I have been viewing you through TH-cam and Curiosity Cafe now for about 2 years. I am self taught through internet research and your many tutorials. Unfortunately, I am not as savvy and sometimes find them a bit over my head, especially when I have to install some third party apps to perform a task that also requires many steps. Just wish it was easier. Firestick seems so basic, yet, so little memory that you really need to be able to do even rudimentary things like installing more memory and clearing what you already have. I can't get the ip to connect in ADB Shell. Says connection refused. I have the new firestick 4K max. Is that a problem?

Troy. If we go with Option 2 that means Added Apps and Downloads are on one drive. Right? Might be easier than having to move downloads around later with Total Commander.

It just seems that this would be TOTALLY AWESOME to do from a computer where the copy and paste as well as the keyboard options are available.
I am going to be buying two of these 'riggz' for USB flash drive and the OTG cable.

I added a USB 3.0 hub between the flash drive and the OTG cable. I then plugged in a USB 3.0 to Ethernet adapter as well as the flash drive. Fire TV immediately recognized and connected with the Ethernet wired network. Works great! So does the extra storage. Question - Can I add another flash drive to the USB hub? Say I want to increase the storage even more....
This works. You have to wait a lot longer though for the partitions. Wait a long time. Then you also have to wait a long time to transfer to the disk. I had to wait a good minute to see success. It’s worth it, the disk filling is my most annoying thing to deal with. They need to find a way to copy and paste the disk name because typing it fresh each time is a pain. All they needed was a cursor option to go back and change the software being moved each time. Also invest the extra $5 in a multi slot otg cable and get yourself the smart mouse

I want to upgrade my usb drive for a larger one, so I need to transfer all the apps back to FireTV 4K, install an larger stick, and them redo all the initial process. Thanks for any help!!

I don't know but knowing that the files are on a usb disk, just remove the disk and your firestick will operate with what's ever loaded on it.. if you want to add those files back to the firestick just downloader them ... or If you want them on the new usb upgrade storage just follow this tutorial and downloader them again.. hope this help

I caught part of what you were doing. New to cutting the cord here. And, was wondering why you were doing each step. And, why that way and not some other way. In part the thinking and understanding a head and down the road to becoming more 2xperanced and advance ad hour level for us new guys to have a better grasp to all those steps and save us on the learning curve.
If I were to put Cinema HD on an external drive would it automatically download any movie to the external disk to be watch later without buffering?
I believe you would have to have ES on the external drive since that is where your download would be stored.

I have a recent important question I wanted to run across your way in the posts here, but also, I discovered a shortcut or two with the remote to the long typing endurance..lol.
The remote play button will instantly submit whats in the box you type in, instead of going all the way down and over...
Also to space and delete characters in the box, you can use the forward and back buttons instead (>)...

I'm confused as to why after adding the 128 gigs to the device storage, that it only shows 3.08 gigs left after adding those 25 apps. Why does it not show the rest of the storage, either device or external? Maybe I'm not understanding something?
If you ever seen a Amazon fire it has a USB port and an SD card reader it's kind of like adding one of those to a fire stick

when I do the sm list-disks; it returns with mantis:/$ and no name. What am I doing wrong?
Mine did that too.. try it again, it should work, even though it lists twice now. I get an error after the next step all the time.

If you’re using the Amazon Ethernet adapter, get rid of it. I was having the same exact issue but when I got rid of the adapter and switched to Wi-Fi, my problem went away.
Thanks for the awesome video. I see all the items that I will need to do this. Just one real quick question. Do I need to have a Fire TV stick 4K device, if I have a Fire Stick TV 4K TV already. The TV in the video is the same TV that I have already. It’s only 4 months old, and already pout of storage even deleting all apps off the TV. I’ve tried everything I can think of adb just will not connect to my firetv I even tried using a pc
has to be Firestick 4k or newer. sometimes toggling ADB DEBUG on and off will work. And you need at least a 2A power supply.
I have the same problem. It just constantly says "Connecting to....." and never connects.

There has got to be an easier way to move apps from internal storage to the USB drive! Perhaps a way to copy what's on the adb shell command line and paste it later?
Yes there should be a way to speed the process like when you hold down the ok button while in the command line to show previously typed lines to choose from or a copy and paste feature.
@@AwesomeFuture777 Better yet, some enterprising programmer might find a way to produce an app with a GUI which permits selection of apps with a checkbox and a button to "move to USB...." (Guess I'm dreaming here.)

Hey Troy, ur the best everything worked like a charm ur a god sent best firestick subscription ever, thanks again. Currently transferring anything I downloaded over except for things like u suggested specifically vpn and or things like blokada. Just trying to figure which packagers belong to each app because some apps don’t list the name in the package. Not sure if u knew a short cut to figuring out which package name belongs to what app of the name isn’t in it like Disney or Netflix for example. Please comment if u can thanks.

Bought a 4k Fire TV Stick and I was able to get my usb set up to transfer apps over too it! Great! Now that I have Disney+ and some other apps on the usb, some of them are asking for updates. How do you do that? I tried to do an update via the app notification and it keeps telling me I don't have enough space? I'm using a 64k usb for all of my apps, how can I not have enough space? Does the Remote ADB Shell not pass updates through to the apps on the usb?

With mine some apps will update but the apks are winding up in random places on the internal storage, not the usb...
@@MrNorman3rd I noticed this as well. When I uninstalled the app Disney+ from the usb, the Fire Stick storage decreased as well. Uninstalling it and re-installing it was the only way I could update the Disney+ app. I then moved it back over to the usb. I don't know of any other way to do this.

Many thanks for your easy guiding videos and help to understand more about fire tv stick. I have one clarification. Firestick ( through VLC or MX player) is not able to output Native 6 channel audio. It just provides Dolby + surround effect with all 5 speakers. I tried by playing the 5.1 (eAC3 audio format in MKV file) videos. However, It does give true 6 channel audio only with Netflix and some Prime Videos. But not with any downloaded videos. I suspect that it's because there is no Android media player which either decodes or passthrough 5.1 audio, all players convert audio to 2 channel audio. Let me know if any workaround for this. I have connected my Firestick to a Yamaha AV receiver. The AV receiver provides info on what type of audio I am providing as input.

This is very straight forward. However, I have a problem that is not addressed. The adb ap does not connect to anything. It first say it cannot connect. I do not get the always connect from this computer pop-up
I would like to partition the drive asymmetrically. For example, I would like to use 75% of the storage for the firestick and 25% for other storage. So in the ADB command, would it be "mixed 75" or "mixed 25"?

Troy, why does my firestick resets and go back to home after I typed “sm partition disk:8,0 mixed 50” and run. And the Remote ADB Shell gets uninstalled.

I’ve read in the comments of other videos on using a usb for storage on the firestick, that you can either use the wired Ethernet adapter or the OTG adapter (with usb drive), but not both inline at the same time. Does using the thumb drive to expand the internal storage allow for both to be used, or will that still be an issue?

( those tiny ones ) 128 G
But every-time there’s an update on Netflix, TH-cam etc...
Keeps saying that there in not enough space

So I did this with and followed all the steps and everything worked Great.. I added a few app including Cinema TV, Strix (vr 11), Troy play store, but all the sudden my Cinema TV began to freeze up on us. Merely hovering over the icon would cause my firestick to freeze up as well. Eventually I decided to restart my firestick thinking it the logical thing to do without resetting it all over again. However, when it rebooted a few minutes later my Cinema Tv and and all other apps I had downloaded to my flash drive were gone. Whats more is that when I attempted to download apps again they downloaded directly to the firestick.. is Cinema to blame? Have you heard anything about this?
Also when I would click or hover over other apps I had no problem. It was only the Cinema that was freezing on me.
Where do I place the USB Drive & OTG Cable when I'm currently using an Ethernet adapter? Which goes first? I've tried putting the Ethernet adapter first then the OTG Cable and that did not work. Then I tried putting the OTG Cable first then the Ethernet adapter cable and that did not work either. Am I only able to accomplish adding USB Drive when on WiFi and NOT Ethernet?

Did you find a solution? I am having the same issue...all the apps stored on my Firestick not on usb stick. Also discovered with file explorer I had 126gigs available on the usb but only the original 8 gigs on the Firestick. I lost half my usb space during partitioning the usb Drive.
I got much further watching this video than I ever did on my own. So thank you for doing this. It's great. Couple of questions. 1. I tried to do an 85%/15% split. The 85% I want to use for movies and tv shows. and the 15% for apps. So if I did this correctly, I can see the 85% on my windows laptop to add movies to, just as you've shown here and if I download any additional apps, they should download onto the 15% that I cannot access via laptop. Is that correct? If I want to switch sideloaded apps into that additional 15% partition, is there a way to tell what's what? For example, I want to move the Wolf Launcher over to the 15% partition. How do I identify that in the cmd prompt screen? Among others? Thanks for everything!

@@edgarchin ok this should have worked. if you checked the drive you should see at the bottom 2 files actually 3 . the first is the firestick internal drive and the 2nd and third are you usb card. of these 2 1 file has dm-2 and if you look to you right has some numbers then a line that has mnt on it.. this is where your app files will go and the 3rd line will have the word dev/fuse this is your storage.
I also wanted to do a different split so I used 30 as my number. it worked but it came with 70% for apps and 30% storage. I reformatted again with 70 and that didn't work...once done couldn't be redone.. also did 50 after the last 2 times the numbers were all the same as the first time.. what to do..

@@TROYPOINTVids Also make sure you have the OS 6.0 or higher. I have a 4K firestick but it had the OS 5.0 and nothing would work on it. So when they put out the first few 4K firesticks I was (un)lucky enough to get the OS 5.0.

I just delete them and re-install them. They will get re-installed onto the firestick and not the flash drive.
Hi Troy I appreciate all the help with this great video tutorial. My question is that I'm a simple fire stick user meaning I really don't use it for anything but streaming movies on my tv, using it for multiple movie apps but the storage space is already used up. You offer 2 options but only offer a tutorial for the more complicated option using dual storage. Do you offer a tutorial for the other option where I can just simply add the additional storage needed for my needs?
