I use a ugreen ethernet connector with USB hubs and you can move any app you want on the USB drive I believe I have done it with some like TH-cam and others with Explorer and I have 32 with internal and 32 gigs with external on the same firestick works great thanks

Well done and very clear and I have done this with my older firestick with a 3 USB port OTG cable. I use one port for a Device Storage drive and the other for a data storage drive, the third I use for a remote keyboard dongle. This set up worked fine on my older firestick, but it seems to confuse the new 4K Max. Is there any solution or am I stuck with choosing Device or Data? Thanks, and keep up the good information.
Thanks for an excellent video with such great detail. I have 4 tvs with Fire Sticks. It is very time consuming trying to keep all Fire Sticks up-to-date. Once I get one Fire Stick updated with my preferred applications and all these apps are stored on my USB drive, can I duplicate the USB drive and use it on another Fire Stick?

No. Internal or System Storage holds your App Data and cache, but if you set up your thumb drive as system storage, as opposed to "external", you're good to go.

If you fomratted at FAT32 and the firestick never sees it, it sounds like there's a problem with either your OTG cable to USB drive. Can you try another?

Wow, that is painfully low space. Without knowing more details, I'd suggest some spring cleaning. Get rid if apps you don't use all the time, maybe remove apps on the firestick and get a bigger drive and start over. If you don't have close to 1GB free, you're likely to have issues at some point.

@Dennis Pennington You can't increase the Ram, but you can add system storage and External storage. The easy way is to use the USB hub in the description and set up two USB drives one at a time (so you don't confuse which is which), one for System (apps) and one for External (storage).

Yes. depending on how the USB drive was configured on your First Firestick, it may not be readable on the 2nd. The safest thing to do would be to plug your USB drive into a computer if you have one. Copy the Movies and anything else you want from it to your computer. The Apps might be a little more complicated since you may not see them on the computer. Hi, Thanks so much for the Sub. I don't really see the need for two 2TB drives. The 256GB SanDisk USB drive (link in the description of this video) is more than you'll ever need for Internal Storage for Apps. As for a 2TB drive for External Storage for like DVR functionality I'd stick with Sandisk again, like this one: amzn.to/3YkMMAU Lastly, I haven't found a reliable two USB port OTG cable, but if you get the OTG cable and UGreen USB Hub in the description, you'll have more than enough ports. Was same 15 minutes after I added usb as external it will pause live tv / record the stream ( dvr ) for 7 hours on a 32 gb drive…. Really nice for when wife interrupts my tv show to send me to Walmart to buy something

The apps have to support being moved to external USB. If the app doesn't support moving to the USB, it won't. That is one limit. You can add all the extra storage you want, but if the app won't move to it, it won't. I believe you can go into the applications area, to the app, and try to manually move it to USB. But again, only if the app will support it.

I tried this with the adb and fire stick 4k. It only briefly worked. The usb kept disappearing. It took me a long time to set up and move everything. Does the 4k max actually work well? I dont eant to put all this time and effort into it again only to habe it mess up again.
The steps in this video are for the Max (FireOS 7). The 4k Firestick had FireOS 6. I have another video on FireOS 6. Months earlier I think. Let me know if you can't find it. Good luck!

I watched another video that you had posted about moving your apps on firestick to a thumb drive using x-plore. I did format the 64gb thumb drive on firestick, then opened the x-plore app and moved all applicable apps over. They still all show on the left side of the x-plore app manager, and I did delete all apks on the right side, and now all those show on the external thumb drive.out of 64gb, and show 59.00 of 60.77 still available. However, when an app needs to be updated, and I click update, it states I do not have enough memory. what am i doing wrong?
Do you have the 4k Max? If so, I'd suggest using the instructions in this video. It's an update to the old video. Also, sorry it I wasn't very clear in that older video, but left and right doesn't necessarily equal internal or external. You can put either storage location on the left or right. Lastly, the firestick interface on the old 4k firestick doesn't show the % available properly. For that you need to use crappy ADB commands. Another reason to get get the 4k Max

Very happy. However, if there is an update available for a certain app (I have had issues with hulu and others). No use of using a usb with fat32 system file as the largest size it can store is 4gb. But a good bluray with dv, hdr, atmos will be a lot bigger than 4gb which u cannot copy on a fat32 usb. Its only good for storing all yr apps on the usb for which only a 16gb or 32gb is more than enuf. Otherwise its useless.
No. Not the old sticks. It's a much more involved process to add storage to FireOS 6 FireTV devices. Look for my video on Adding storage to Firestick 4k ((without the word "max")
If you eject device storage, it will make you move any apps to internal (non-USB) storage first. I suggest powering down the Firestick before removing it (no need to eject) but make sure the USB is back before powering it up again if you have anything on it.

How much storage did you have available before you added the USB storage? It's best to have close to 1GB free as some models will still look for available internal storage even though the app doesn't get installed there. Are you using the 1st generation 4K Max?
I can't get it to work. I have tried an OTG cable with 4 different thumb drives of various capacities. I have software version Fire OS 6.2.9.5 (NS6295/4448). I saw this video a few days ago, but can only try the procedure now. 😢
I've got the 4K FireStick. Got me a Kingston 64 gb flash drive formatted to FAT32, but nothing happens when plugging it in. I get no prompts or anything. What could be the reason? Debugging is off too. Help please!
@Brightly747 are you using a OTG cable, or s USB Hub, and are you using the power supply that came with the Firestick? Some hubs don't work, and if plugged in to TV for power, it might not provide enough power.
I'm using an OTG cable & using power supply that came with Firestick. When connecting the Kingston USB to my PC I see files that came from Firestick, but nothing when connected to TV. The OTG cable was a cheapie $1.59, I got on ebay, could that be the issue? @@CordCuttersLI

TiviMate doesn’t work as good on the external storage and it still doesn’t let me record on the TiviMate app saying that memory is low but it’s on the hard drive with extra memory. I’m not sure why it’s not working

This video is for the Firestick 4k MAX, not the regular Firestick which has the older FireOS6 operating system. Spoil yourself and buy the 4k Max. You won't regret it! If I'm misunderstanding you and have the 4k Max, the popup message isn't that important. Just go into Settings/Storage and do what I did. Good Luck and let me know how you make out!

Bc fire stick is designed for a non technical audience, which accounts for 95% of buyers. Wanting to add additional storage to a fire stick accounts for a very niche group of people like us, lol.
you probably have the regular 4k firestick and not the max. the regular one uses a different and longer method....do a search on youtube for other videos to show you how.
Hi Paul, My video was already longer than I wanted it to be, but I should have mentioned sometimes apps that cannot be "moved" can still be installed on the USB device storage if you uninstall and install again. For example, DistroTV wouldn't let me move it, but when I Uninstaller and reinstalled, it went onto the USB drive. Give it a shot. Let me know how you make out. I don't remember if I mentioned it in the Video, but I also recommend starting from a freshly factory reset Firestick before adding storage. This way, all the apps that CAN be installed on USB will do so.
hmm, can you clear at least 1GB of interanl storage before trying to install on external? I think maybe the stick is seeing the storage is too low before it looks to see where it's installing it; if that makes sense?
@@JackieClark-f1d If you want to use a USB thumb drive AND an ethernet cable, you will need to add a USB Hub. They are cheap and I have a link in the description of the video to the one I use. It works great AND is much faster than the Amazon Ethernet adapter.

Can I unplug my USB ( containing my Kodi & apps) from the Fire stick and then factory reset my fire stick bc I seem to be having a small issue. If I factory reset, once completed & up & running, can I then plug my OTG and USB back on my fire stick and the Kodi and apps moved will they still be functioning. No, if you reset your Firestick, nothing on the USB drive will work. The apps you installed on the Firestick interact with system files on the device that won't be the same after a factory reset. Thank you for your kind words and for your support!
Basically no major streaming apps allow you to transfer the app to the USB internal storage. Glanced over this with no real explanation of how few apps can be installed on the USB internal storage so thank for wasting my time, and helping me waste some money.

What is the max storage thumb drive you can use? Could I use a 1TB one that I have?
There really isn't a max that I am aware of. I've used 2TB drives. It is probably best for SSD over HDD though.

Im pretty sure Pausing LiveTV doesn't use either internal or external. It pauses the stream and starts again when you unpause.

The apps have to support being moved to external USB. If the app doesn't support moving to the USB, it won't. That is one limit. You can add all the extra storage you want, but if the app won't move to it, it won't. I believe you can go into the applications area, to the app, and try to manually move it to USB. But again, only if the app will support it.

I tried this with the adb and fire stick 4k. It only briefly worked. The usb kept disappearing. It took me a long time to set up and move everything. Does the 4k max actually work well? I dont eant to put all this time and effort into it again only to habe it mess up again.
The steps in this video are for the Max (FireOS 7). The 4k Firestick had FireOS 6. I have another video on FireOS 6. Months earlier I think. Let me know if you can't find it. Good luck!

I watched another video that you had posted about moving your apps on firestick to a thumb drive using x-plore. I did format the 64gb thumb drive on firestick, then opened the x-plore app and moved all applicable apps over. They still all show on the left side of the x-plore app manager, and I did delete all apks on the right side, and now all those show on the external thumb drive.out of 64gb, and show 59.00 of 60.77 still available. However, when an app needs to be updated, and I click update, it states I do not have enough memory. what am i doing wrong?
Do you have the 4k Max? If so, I'd suggest using the instructions in this video. It's an update to the old video. Also, sorry it I wasn't very clear in that older video, but left and right doesn't necessarily equal internal or external. You can put either storage location on the left or right. Lastly, the firestick interface on the old 4k firestick doesn't show the % available properly. For that you need to use crappy ADB commands. Another reason to get get the 4k Max

Very happy. However, if there is an update available for a certain app (I have had issues with hulu and others). I can update them on the firesticks that I have not added additional storage, but on the one that I did add storage I keep getting messages that there is not enough memory to install updates. No use of using a usb with fat32 system file as the largest size it can store is 4gb. But a good bluray with dv, hdr, atmos will be a lot bigger than 4gb which u cannot copy on a fat32 usb. Its only good for storing all yr apps on the usb for which only a 16gb or 32gb is more than enuf. Otherwise its useless.

No. Not the old sticks. It's a much more involved process to add storage to FireOS 6 FireTV devices. Look for my video on Adding storage to Firestick 4k ((without the word "max")
Is it possible to eject the usb drive from application menu both for device and external modes?
If you eject device storage, it will make you move any apps to internal (non-USB) storage first. I suggest powering down the Firestick before removing it (no need to eject) but make sure the USB is back before powering it up again if you have anything on it.

How much storage did you have available before you added the USB storage? It's best to have close to 1GB free as some models will still look for available internal storage even though the app doesn't get installed there. Are you using the 1st generation 4K Max?

you have the old firestick. this method won't work on that one. do a search on youtube for the old firestick as it has a different method to do this.

@Brightly747 are you using a OTG cable, or s USB Hub, and are you using the power supply that came with the Firestick? Some hubs don't work, and if plugged in to TV for power, it might not provide enough power.
I'm using an OTG cable & using power supply that came with Firestick. When connecting the Kingston USB to my PC I see files that came from Firestick, but nothing when connected to TV. The OTG cable was a cheapie $1.59, I got on ebay, could that be the issue? @@CordCuttersLI

TiviMate doesn’t work as good on the external storage and it still doesn’t let me record on the TiviMate app saying that memory is low but it’s on the hard drive with extra memory. I’m not sure why it’s not working
Right. I wouldn't run TiviMate on external, but recording should work fine onto it. Just need to make sure the path is correct.

This video is for the Firestick 4k MAX, not the regular Firestick which has the older FireOS6 operating system. Spoil yourself and buy the 4k Max. You won't regret it!
If I'm misunderstanding you and have the 4k Max, the popup message isn't that important. Just go into Settings/Storage and do what I did.

you probably have the regular 4k firestick and not the max. the regular one uses a different and longer method....do a search on youtube for other videos to show you how.

My video was already longer than I wanted it to be, but I should have mentioned sometimes apps that cannot be "moved" can still be installed on the USB device storage if you uninstall and install again. For example, DistroTV wouldn't let me move it, but when I Uninstaller and reinstalled, it went onto the USB drive. Give it a shot. Let me know how you make out. I don't remember if I mentioned it in the Video, but I also recommend starting from a freshly factory reset Firestick before adding storage. This way, all the apps that CAN be installed on USB will do so.

@@JackieClark-f1d If you want to use a USB thumb drive AND an ethernet cable, you will need to add a USB Hub. They are cheap and I have a link in the description of the video to the one I use. It works great AND is much faster than the Amazon Ethernet adapter.

Hope u're well & love ur clear tits. I got the USB U suggest & OTG..all working well. I was wondering...I've moved my Kodi & all apps that can be moved to USB. Can I unplug my USB ( containing my Kodi & apps) from the Fire stick and then factory reset my fire stick bc I seem to be having a small issue. If I factory reset, once completed & up & running, can I then plug my OTG and USB back on my fire stick and the Kodi and apps moved will they still be functioning.

No, if you reset your Firestick, nothing on the USB drive will work. The apps you installed on the Firestick interact with system files on the device that won't be the same after a factory reset. Thank you for your kind words and for your support!
How to root x poor
Basically no major streaming apps allow you to transfer the app to the USB internal storage. Glanced over this with no real explanation of how few apps can be installed on the USB internal storage so thank for wasting my time, and helping me waste some money.
This video is about adding storage, not installing apps on it, but many apps CAN be installed on system storage. Which ones are you talking about specifically?
