Thanks for the video, knowledge is power in these border crossings. I did Phnom Penh to Bangkok via poi pet for 18USD through capitol buses about 10 years ago.
You got off the bus and queued hours to get through immigration. Got in hi-ace vans that flew on the Thai side, but dropped us in the middle of nowhere late in the evening in Bangkok. It was an all day affair. Asia does that sort of crap a lot. Hired cars with the family and did it again about 5years ago. The new processing center was heaps better, but hiring cars is expensive.

That was very informative, and like most Poi Pet border crossing videos I have seen, it is chaos, with determined travelers invariably getting hassled and screwed for their efforts.
I just checked and atm one can get a 1 hour direct flight from Don Mueang International in Bangkok to Siem Reap for $53, so that $1.50 + $45 taxi ride might have some competition.

@@dexadrinepancake Border crossing are their own unique thing, but nowadays every large city in every Asian country I have traveled in has ride share apps where the price is set and paid for before the ride comes, that even includes riding on the back of motorbikes. Also, one can use the app to determine what price a foreigner should be paying for the destination.

Such a useful video Chris. Unfortunately Poipet is not the best intro to Cambodia but once you get through it the rest of the country is really nice. The train is an excellent way to travel from Thailand to Cambodia and its so little known. Other than the price it allows you to get to the border early which is really useful. There is nothing else for $1.50. Public thai buses from Ekamai station are good too. As you cross the border just smile and politely refuse at any offer you get for visa and taxis and walk past the casinos till you get to the one visa office on the right side that issues one month visas - make sure your country is eligible for visa on arrival. Shared taxis are a good option ... but if you ask inside the casinos they should help you find buses to siem reap for much less.

Wow, that's the old train station in Bangkok. It's totally changed now. I've been on lots of trains over there, and the bathrooms are usually pretty bad. I'd pay $1.50 for a ticket, but I don't think my wife would. In Siem Reip, I would avoid the marijuana pizza if I were you.

The biggest tip for SEA is, be calm. Losing face is huge, it's more that those people have first go at getting a tour with them that's it. Smile and relax......
    Be polite and respectful.

Chris - sorry you had a rough start with your journey in Cambodia. I heard the government is cracking down on these kind of scams now in 2024. Hopefully, this will be a thing of the past. On a brighter note, don’t be sad. These sort of ordeals are part of the “journey.”

lol. I've been in Siem Reap for 2.5 years since I couldn't get my flight to Laos when everything shut down immediately with the Pandemic. I'm at 16:35 listening to the driver tell you "No English" when you ask if he will take you to your hotel. An experienced driver who doesn't understand "take me to my hotel"? Yeah, right. NO WAY he will take you to your hotel. I'm gonna keep watchin' to see if a miracle happens. Okay. Finished watching. You were REALLY lucky that the tuk-tuk driver wasn't part of a scam getting more money. Sounds like a nice guy.
I've lived here three times now. Observation to offer: there is a characteristic of Khmer culture with communication I see over and over and over again that might be helpful to you. When the guy tells you he will take you to Siem Reap, he IS taking you to Siem Reap, but so are other people. It doesn't mean Siem Reap or your hotel is his destination.
Another example: I moved into a very quiet apartment in Siem Reap. A few weeks later, I woke up to the trees next to my kitchen window being cut down. They were clearing the land to build something. Banging metal against metal and sawing has been constant. It's very loud. The owner of the apartments told me the people were building a small metal structure "like a street restaurant across the street" and would take one week. It did take one week, but it also took 5 MORE weeks. This is the 6th week of a build of a small brick and cement house with lots of metal framework. How we think of things and communicate that is very different between cultures.
Another thing you will see are prices MUCH higher for foreigners than for locals if you aren't careful. If you can afford it, that's great. People need help. It has been a struggle for everyone during the pandemic. I questioned one driver I got to know about the EXTREMELY high cost he wanted me to pay (over $350) when I knew the cost with others (ABOUT $160). He had no trouble explaining to me that his income had been harshly reduced during the pandemic and he didn't see a problem with making that up with charging me.
Tuk-tuk drivers telling you, "yes, yes, yes" when you ask if they know where your destination is when they really don't. People don't like to say no or that they don't know something. In those cases, the driver might take you to a place you have know idea where you are or want to charge you much more because they had to drive you around so much because they were lost. Welcome to Cambodia.

I'm all about an adventure. I'd have gotten that taxi to take me to the airport. Do you have a friend or family member with access to your account? That way if something happens to you guys, we can deal with it. Good luck and safe journeys. 👋 Gladys

FYI they want USD and the best place to exchange Baht or Dong is at Gold Shops through black market for the best rates. But....They did accept Dong because my USD bill weren't perfect. If you are using USD in Cambodia make sure they are clean with no marks or damage or you will be denied at most places. Travel on!

Retracing the movements of the Royal Thai Army on it's way to clash with Vichy French troops amassed throughout Northwest Cambodia in 1940. I'm referring to the Franco-Thai War of 1940-1941. For a couple of months, around 80 years ago, battles were fought in and around the towns of Seam Reap, Sisophon, and Battambang. The French were victorious at the Battle of Koh Chang (a naval battle), Japan intervened, and an armistice was brokered that favored Thailand - the war ended. Here's an excerpt from Wiki regarding some of the fighting:
"At dawn on January 16, 1941, the French launched a large counterattack on the Thai-held villages of Yang Dang Khum and Phum Preav, initiating the fiercest battle of the war. Due to poor coordination and nonexistent intelligence against the entrenched and well-prepared Thai forces, the French operation was stopped and fighting ended with a French retreat from the area. However, the Thais were unable to pursue the retreating French, as their forward tanks were kept in check by the gunnery of French Foreign Legion artillery."

$13 dollars isn’t a bad deal at all. The bad part was that the Lexus dud didn’t dropped you off at your hotel and change you for $13. So he just let you deal with the tuk tuk guy instead

    • @BIGJED75
      @BIGJED75 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It's generally the way if the driver can't speak any English. They will have a spot they get local tuktuk drivers to drive you to your hotel included in the price, so the TukTuk drivers have First crack at you for a tour. If you do your homework these people know the best places to go.
