      Thank you so much, Marion; and hello New Mexico! Honestly, we truly were very close to skipping it. The only reason we even included it at the start was because a friend had visited in 2022 and loved it. I don't even think what she posted about clicked with me; it was more her enthusiasm. And we knew so little about anything related to the country, including Angkor Wat. But its people and vibe hit us in the best way. Exceptional content, very well thought out and put together in post. Someone is spending lots of time and attention, and it SHOWS. The intro with pics swapping directly as the beat hits, is not lost on me. Do either of you have a background in video and photo or self taught. Lovely skills on display.

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Thanks so much, Jay and Sarah! It's a great compliment from fellow TH-camrs who understand how much work goes into each episode. We each do our part and are self-taught, but Kevin takes the credit for his amazing video editing skills, which he's learned on the fly. He first started WhiskyRiffs.com in 2020, which is a TH-cam channel reviewing whisky, and then we both started collaborating on Finding Gina Marie, so he's been steadily increasing his skill set. I can be a critic at times (which is one of the ways I contribute 🤣), and Kevin always takes my feedback and blows me away with how he makes it all work. We are headed to Tirana later this year and your video, especially of the people parking, gave us quite a chuckle! Thank you for watching and for taking the time to leave us this comment! -Judy

      We had such an amazing time and we hope you do as well! Our tour guides at Angkor Wat were good, not great, but we still suggest you use one. Ours was from Get Your Guide. We did a sunrise/sunset tour that ran the course of two days. The first one started at 4am and lasted until around noon and the second day was from around 10am to about 7pm. They drop you off and pick you up each day. We'd *love* to hear your thoughts when you visit. If you stop at any of the restaurants we ate at, please give them a hello for us! @FindingGinaMarie  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It could possibly be because it's a tourist city that it's important to leave a positive impression on tourists. We did find more trash when we explored more of the countryside, but I wonder if that's due more to infrastructure and cost of garbage collection. But overall, we found Cambodians to be peaceful, tidy, and caring, and I think those traits applied to how they treat people as well as their surroundings. It was quite a wonderful experience. Our Airbnb co-host was mopping and cleaning the common areas and outdoors daily. We absolutely loved it. -Judy

    While in SEAsia, if you want something a little bit different, consider Timor-Leste, the world's second newest nation. It's a little bit expensive for SEAsia (return flights from Bali with Citilink or Aerodili cost about $500 each), but it has some beautiful scenery (mountains and beaches), good people and you'll be discovering it before mass tourism arrives.

    I left the country back in 1979 after I had to live through the genocide under Pol Pot killing madness. Most of my family members did not survive as we were forced to move out of the Phnom Penh City in 1975 to work in the rice fields.
    I've returned to visit my sole surviving sister every year for the last ten years since my retirement from the US to heal the past.
    Cambodia has come a long way since the prolonged civil war was officially ended upruptly in 1998. Here, you do not have to worry about mass shooting and gun death violence like the first world countries.
    Be mindful of your surroundings . Be kind whenever possible. It's always possible as life is short to do the things we don't love doing. Happy and safe travels from a genocide survivor ✌️

    Thank you for your beautiful and positive video about Siem Reap. I live here and it is delightful to see your respect for the traditions and people here. Although I live here i tend to just eat near home or the school I teach at, so I learned a lot about some other places that sound delicious for Cambodian food. And the bike ride looks fabulous. By the way, one of our Khmer friend’s wife cooks for Khmer Kitchen. I’ll share your lovely review with her. The nibbling fish tanks have now been banned in Lao because the little fish often die from what travellers may have on their feet, such as oils, insect repellent and street bacteria. If you are in Luang Prabang you can meet these teeny fish in their natural habitat at Tad Kuang Xi. Of course they are everywhere. Safe travels. I am glad I discovered your channel. 😊

Thank you for sharing our feedback about Khmer Kitchen! We'd love your friend to know how much we enjoyed it. We're glad to see that the nibbling fish have been banned in Laos. We weren't too keen on it and were surprised to hear people do it and enjoy it. We are learning a lot from our viewers and appreciate knowing about what's unkind to our non-human friends. (We've got an episode coming out from Thailand soon about how to find an ethical elephant park or sanctuary.) We would love to return to Cambodia and experience more of the country. -Judy

    Siem Reap is a lovely city. Recently returned from a trip to see Angkor Wat (March 2024). The Cambodians are nicest people, very humble and polite. There is need to sorry on the food front. We had local food, Indian, Italian and Mexican. Starbucks is also there. We hired a tuk tuk driver outside our hotel as our personal taxi and tour guide. Great value as he showed around the city and country side and collected us and dropped us off. The old market is a must visit as well as Pub Street for night life. Lots of restaurants and bars. I would recommend the Angkor Wat museum as a must visit. The dollar is king there with virtually everything priced in dollars. So for foreign tourist especially from the US or UK Cambodia is very very affordable and well worth the effort to visit. Can't recommend it highly enough.

    Hi Judy and Kevin ~ love your videos! I have watched many of your earlier videos and enjoyed them too. I would love to see a video update on how you are feeling now that you are a year or so in. In earlier videos you considered 'digial nomading' where Kevin would continue his job. You also considered settling down at one point in Portugal and of course, Italy 🙂. Are you preferring moving around or still plan to settle in one area? Would love to hear your thoughts now that you have been doing 'world travel' for a while now. Keep up the inspiring videos, I love them! ~ Amy

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Amy Joy! Thank you so much for following along with us, especially in our early days when we were still figuring out our path forward. Here's a recent 2024 video we shared about our lives as full-time travelers in case you missed it because it answers some of those questions. In a nutshell, Kevin ended up quitting his job with Apple in January 2023 because the company stopped being friendly to remote work. It was a blessing because we could see that balancing everything would be hard and our hearts were more invested in building our channel and our creative work versus the restrictions of corporate America. We did discuss living in Portugal, but after a visit there in October 2022, we decided it wasn't the place for us after all. Italy still is in our hearts, and we have a video from Turin, that we loved so much more than we expected to! Right now it's between Verona and Turin. We have several trips to Italy scheduled for this year, including one with our daughter. We're excited to share all of those this year. Italy is freezing in winter and after time in Lecce and Assisi, we aren't sure if we want to endure the winters there, which is where Cambodia may enter the picture. We could envision living in Cambodia from November or December through March each year as a break from the cold.
      I'm still navigating the dual citizenship process and that could take another two years. It's okay, though because we still have so much of the world that we want to see that we aren't ready to settle down in one place yet. So living in a new country each month has suited us very well.
      Thank you so much for these questions, for watching our videos and for your support. It truly means the world to us. ♥️ -Judy

      Hi Dean, we recently posted a video-from Cambodia actually-of what we currently have in our packs. Bear in mind we are traveling full time and everything we own is what we carry, so we do have some luxury items that most travelers wouldn't need and we also pack heavier than we would if we were spending even one or two months on the road. We each carry a backpack and a 22" rolling suitcase and except for super budget airlines like Vietjet, we don't have to check our bags. Happy to answer any questions after you've watched the video. Eating a BLAT or Italian in Cambodia? Ok, ok. I fully understand. I love local food; however, when I spend extended time in Asia I sometimes like a break from curries, pad thai, pho, ramen, etc. and I crave one western meal - then back to local food!

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Martin, we have mostly felt the same way. After a few bad food experiences in Ho Chi Minh City, we got a bit more careful about food. And The Little Red Fox was a place recommended to us by our Airbnb as one of the best places for breakfast. Where we stayed was a little village in a village and they were all about lifting up all the businesses in the community, so we were glad to support them. Plus, Kevin can get really cranky when he's hangry or can't find foods that are great for his more sensitive stomach. And honestly, the people there were absolutely incredible. They made us feel like we were part of a community, which is something we were really craving after feeling mostly disconnected in Vietnam.
      But I totally get your point. We have never eaten Western food until Vietnam beyond the rare one-off. I will say that Cambodia's pizza at Il Forno truly rivaled what we've eaten in Napoli! It's important for us to immerse ourselves in the culture of a place and eating the local foods is a huge part of the memories we bring back with us. Unfortunately, we also had a lot of very average tasting Khmer meals there that we don't talk about in our video. Thanks so much for watching and for sharing your experiences! -Judy

      Hi Paris, Unfortunately we did not. We looked into it, but we prefer to slow travel. We definitely are eager to see Phnom Penh and give it a full month where we can enjoy it more fully and really immerse ourselves into it. The cost of another plane fare and ground transfers didn't make it feasible for this trip. We get discounts at Airbnbs when we stay an entire month, so we lose some of that benefit by doing a three-day detour to another city. It's better overall to give it its full attention. Great question, and thanks for watching! -Judy

      Lucky you! Although the drive was long, we enjoyed the statue that was constructed inside the new airport. I have been many times to Siem Reap. It is a very nice place to visit for a few days, but quite a small city. After a while, it may be quite boring to live there, i guess ….. I only mentioned this because your video thumbnail rhetorically asked whether could we live there? 😊.
    Did you watch the PHARE circus? Quite enjoyable. Performed by a group of young people, who I understand have also performed overseas, in Europe for example
    Will you be going to Phnom Penh ? Just curious😊
    Btw, keep up the good work ! I am still dutifully following your journey ….

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Mike, I think we just made some special connections and there was such an ease that we haven't encountered elsewhere. We still love Italy and likely will settle there at some point in the far distant future, but it gets cold in the winter, and Cambodia might be a perfect winter location. We were struck by the strong community atmosphere in Siem Reap, too.
      We didn't see the PHARE circus but we heard about it. There were a lot of things we didn't get to while we were there, which is why we feel like we could spend a lot more time there. We skipped Phnom Penh, but primarily because (1) we had a lot of work to catch up on; and (2) now that the new airport is an hour drive from the airport, between the expense and the lost time, it seemed better to devote an entire separate trip to it. If you've been there, do you recommend it? How about Kampot, which also has been recommended to us?
      Thank you so much for reaching out. It's always great to hear from you! -Judy

    • @Property2030sg
      @Property2030sg 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@FindingGinaMarie Yes, the people is Siem Reap are very hospitality- and service-oriented. Very pleasant. Kampot is nice but too far down South. Quite a taxing road trip, even from Phnom Penh - due to lack of highways. Phnom Penh is not as interesting as Siem Reap - it is more for business. I like Phnom Penh because the Chinese food is really good at my many favourite restaurants - even better than back in my home country :). I haven’t been back to Cambodia since 2019, and I do miss the Chinese food in PP 😊. Somehow, I find the Khmer cuisine a bit limited, compared to other South East Asian cuisines but what do I know ?😊

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      On top of cost, we did think that it looked like Phnom Penh might be more business oriented, so thanks for clarifying that for us. It's disappointing to know that highways make Kampot a challenge. We found some Cambodian/Thai fusion places that were interesting, but we did enjoy a lot of Cambodian food as well. But it was nice that if I wanted Khmer food and Kevin was craving a burger, we could easily do that as well. It doesn't make for as authentic of a culinary experience as it could, but we didn't struggle with food in Cambodia nearly as much as we did in the part of Saigon that we were in. Thanks for all your input. It's very helpful! -Judy
