  • Is this the best way to catch trout? Euro Nymphing has quickly become popular among fly fisherman because of how effective it is at catching trout. The technique, which involves dragging nymphs along the bottom of the creek, has caught my brother and I tons of trout in the relatively short period of time that we have been using it. I hope everyone enjoys our fun day of fishing on one of our local creeks!
    As always thanks for watching! Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe!

    Honestly I wouldn't pay attention to any of the negative comments because y'all have one of the greatest trout fishing channels I've ever seen small streams and small rivers small creeks and giant trout always it's amazing the size trout you guys catch I've been fishing for trout for years and I love fishing for trout it's not everyday you come up on Trout the size and way y'all catch them great job guys keep it up

    You guys are doing a great job with this technique. Yes, it works very well and while having 10 ft, 3 wt rods helps, anyone watching these vids should also know you can do this on a 9 ft, 5wt as well (or other rods). I think folks have a tendency to get a bit snooty with this technique and the fly selections. I love the casualness of your fishing and it really doesn't matter that much how you approach it. Caddis/stonefly combo on stained water + get the nymphs in front of the fishes face, you're gonna catch some trout!

      Thank you! I started euro nymphing on a 9 ft, 5wt rod and caught several quality fish off of it. I now have a 10 ft, 2wt but still use my 5wt for euro nymphing sometimes.

      Yeah we have a few different rods we could technically use for it. I never even really thought to use them honestly. We honestly just like having fun. Sometimes it’s fun to get super technical but other times just getting out there and trying something new is what does it. Thanks for watching and for the advice!!!

    couple quick tips for euro:
    1. a really light reel will give you a better balance, I like the redington zero (plus the click drag is fun on a 3wt)
    2. when casting if you try to do a little flick about 35 degrees upstream of you, let your sighter sit in the water for a second and a half or two, then find the depth you want to work. it'll help to get your flies down to the strike zone really quickly

    • @hardmanfishing
      @hardmanfishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting... I was told I needed a heavier reel to balance the rod out a bit. The flick upstream is a great idea though, I’ll have to try and implement it next time I’m out. Thanks for watching!

    • @mikedobbins7124
      @mikedobbins7124 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I had to protect an old creaky shoulder by adding weight at the butt. Especially with line extended and rod up and leading flys.

    • @MW2bklyn
      @MW2bklyn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hardmanfishing adding weight to the butt, as mike said, will also change the balance, and is how most euro fishermen do it to my understanding. I personally found much better sensitivity with my lightweight reel, and would probably go with the butt extensions that they sell for euro set ups if I wanted to change my weight distribution. Been watching since pretty much the beginning man, love the videos!

    Another great video......you guys are by no means bad fly fishermen. I’ve fished with some awesome fishermen and you guys could certainly hold your own with any of them. Was up in your neck of the woods a couple weeks ago deer hunting. Thought about throwing a fly rod in with my gear and contacting you but my boys joined me hunting so I didn’t have time. Not seeing many coal trains coming down the New River and I know the fracking has been greatly reduced in that area. I sure hope your geology degrees will allow you to stay in that beautiful part of the word. Maybe by expanding your fly fishing species you can go full time fishing for a career. I have a friend that catches huge musky on the New River next to my farm.......maybe you need to come down and try your skills on them.

    • @hardmanfishing
      @hardmanfishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! And yeah the area is going down hill and as far as jobs go there aren't many. We'll probably end up moving away and just making trips to fish. But I personally love musky fishing and used to do it quite a bit, I think I may have even made a video doing it at one point. I plan to do it some this spring and maybe even fly fish for them. It's hard to tell what I'll end up doing. Anyway thanks for the support and I hope you had a great deer season! We were out hunting as well.

    I'm guessing your geology degree is proving useful for finding productive waters. By the milky appearance and the size of the fish, your favorite W.Va. creeks appear to be limestoners. New River watershed? Clinch River? There's an excellent reference book, "Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes of Virginia" that I recommend. It applies to W. Va. just as well especially to the watersheds that I mentioned. Some of the Darters have incredible spawning colors! It's available through the Virginia DWR website. Thanks for showcasing what W. Va. has to offer. Greetings from Konnarock, Va. (Mt. Rodgers Nat. Recreation area) just to your south.

      Most of our videos we fish the Appalachian mountains. Usually around WV. A lot of these creeks aren’t necessarily easy to wade (rocks are super slick) we’ve just grown up doing it. But as far as access goes most of the time we’re fishing places that are generally easy to access. So from that perspective it’s a good deal!

    • @muletown2003
      @muletown2003 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me, I have found that most of the time if I can present the fly to the fish properly I will always out fish spinning gear, even for smallmouth bass. as far as lakes are concerned, I do not do much fishing on lakes, but again if you can find the fish and present the fly to them you will generally produce. My best largemouth and smallmouth were both caught on a fly rod. The largemouth was caught in a small lake and was 8 and a half pounds; the smallmouth was caught euro nymphing a river, and was 5 and three quarters of a pound. There are some places that I have not figured out yet for the fly rod, but often I find the fly rod to be the most productive.

    • @hardmanfishing
      @hardmanfishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’d say euro nymphing is about as effective as using live bait (like worm and sinker type fishing). So I’d say it is more effective than spinner fishing. HOWEVER it is a more difficult technique so it is much easier for the average person to go out and catch fish on a spinner. It just depends on how serious you are and how much experience you have with a fly rod.

Just remind him next time you are the one doing all the fishing while he enjoys the saltwater and sunshine in FL lol. Fishing wise everything looked good for technicality, so great job. Only thing to watch out for is holding the rod, instead of the cork when fighting. I make that mistake to when landed, but I have been warned rods will break with the pressure of the fish and then holding the rod like that because it takes away the natural flex and support it would have otherwise. Thank god for warranties regardless. Great vid guys!

    The best way I ever found when fishing was when I was young. I would go to a small river that was not too deep walk about half a mile or so then get in the water again'st the current and fish with my hands. Under rocks and banks. Many a fish I caught this way. I have had a rat pass my head as I had a trout in my hands but was not going to let go of it as it was a good size. There was a lot of cray fish in the river but believe it or not I never got bit by them. My best trout ever out of the river was when a dead ewe was in the water and full of maggots. It must have brought the big trout up from somewhere along the little river when it got the smell of food. Well it ended up on the pan for me and very nice it was too.

    You are so lucky lads. I do not drive so have to rely on a river I did go to and will be going to now I am retired. But it only has small brown trout in. You would be lucky to get anything over 10/11 inches long and way to many eels in the river. A nightmare to get the hook out of them. Slime everywhere when you do get the hook out.

If you don't want to name the state, please let me know if it is in the Northeast or Southeast or wherever. I'm curious, because obviously the state wildlife agency is doing a good job of managing wild trout.

    Shhhhh euro nymphing dosent work ;).
    On terms of constructive criticism, you guys Overall are doing a really well, only a few things I would change. Probably the biggest of which is at multiple times in the video when you were landing the fish you would grab higher up on the rod to help gain leverage on the fish. Although at times this is useful, I would strongly advise against doing this. A rod is designed to bend to best keep tension with the fish. Instead try to put your second hand on your fighteing butt and push down. This will give the same effect but allow the rod to do what it wants to

    • @hardmanfishing
      @hardmanfishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yessir! I am actually aware of that I just have a bad habit. It’s something I developed while landing fish on my own that I’ve yet to break while fishing with others. Either way thanks for the advice! It is much appreciated. And thanks for watching!

    Your doing it all wrong. The Best tactic I always see these days here in Colorado is $1,500 combo , $800 waders, $500 pack to hold your flies, $300 shades , 200$ net, $60 nippers to cut line then go sling the crap out of some 50 cent flies within casting distance of your vehicle. Lol. Seriously though I’m just glad those folks are like the bums we have, they disappear once it starts getting cold and snowy. I just go downtown Denver to check the fishing report and it looks like fly season is almost here.
