    Man-o-man y'all land some nice fish! That rainbow was a doozy! For grins I did some digging around and found the average mature fish (rainbow) are around 16 inches long and 2 - 8 pounds. The record was a 48 pound rainbow caught in Canada. I thank the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service for the info. Since my fishing days are probably over, it is sure nice to watch others land some quality fish. Trout fishing was my favorite. Thanks for sharing something wonderful and positive.

I got into fly fishing a bit when I was a teenager but now I’m looking to get more serious into the sport. I’ll be in the water in 2 to 3 weeks weather permitting. Thank you very much for the awesome content!

    Looked like eagle or maybe osprey took a smack at that trout, you can kinda see that marks of the talons like only one of the birds legs connected and the fish got either dropped back to the water or never got fully taken out maybe because the bird only got on foot of talons and the fish was to big for on foot. That's my opinion I live near ct river and catch shad that have similar marks from bald eagles and ospreys connecting but not successful.

    Trout do a lot of weird stuff so when they go up the falls and stuff like salmon they will cut themselves up pretty good on the rocks to but but when you see scars on the top of the fish like that one usually a big bird is trying to get it but beautiful fish keep up the good fishing

    What a great outing you all had! I have a possible suggestion regarding the wounded brown trout - river otter. Virginia “reintroduced” them about thirty years ago; not sure if West Virginia ever did. In any event, the scarring suggests otter: they try to catch and hold fish by the head (when I was younger, I owned a small spring fed trout pond in western Virginia ... I’m aware of what otters can do). That lovely rainbow? Wonder if it might not have just a touch of cutthroat DNA in its ancestry. Nearly half a century ago, a fisheries biologist with the old Bureau of Sport Fisheries & Wildlife (now Fish & Wildlife Service) told me that several of the federal hatcheries in the southeast (especially) had “rainbows” with some cutthroat lineage, a line going back to the early years of the twentieth century. So, if that stream has had “wild” rainbows for a long, long time and if it had ever received federal hatchery fish, say pre-1960, then yeah a hint of cutt is possible ... notice the light spotting toward the head, heavy spotting toward the tail? That can be a give-away. Love your videos - keep up the great work!

    • @hardmanfishing
      @hardmanfishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought it could be an otter but I've never seen one in that area and I virtually lived there for 4 years. I have seen otters in a different drainage not too terribly far away though so it is possible. And yes those fish have been in there for a very long time. And apparently some people say that there are some long lost cut bow type of hybrids in that system. But others say it is a myth. There are very clear differences in rainbows in that drainage though, so I'd be willing to bet some money on a few different strains of rainbows being introduced at one time. At this point though they're so mixed together through generations of spawning that it would be tough to ever know for sure. Anyway thanks for watching!

    • @hardmanfishing

      5 seconds is way to long to have them out of the water. And also you can record and take pictures fish while they are still in the water were there oxygen is. Out of all the fishing channels i am subscribed to you are the only one who needs to have them out that long.
      Go check out trippin on trout channel. I have learned thing about the harm and much more from him. Plus amazing videos.
      Im not trying to be a hater but i believe you can fish and handle them alil better.
      Keep your videos coming tho i do enjoy them besides what i mentioned.
      Trail on and tight lines

    Could have been human caused on that brown as well. Handle the fish minimally and with care, get them back in the water quick.

      I doubt that highly, these were cuts. I’ve seen mishandled fish and the damage is much different.

    I always lose interest when a video maker can't even say what state or country he is in.

      Yeah me too honestly. Crazy that some "video makers" won't give exact coordinates. It would make putting no effort in to find fish so much easier.

    That was an awesome video! Videos like this one are the reason I recently caught my second biggest rainbow ever. Keep up the great content👍
