    Glory B offers some reasonable jump and high-impact exercises that check out with current research. I give her credit for introducing me to that concept and I'm appreciative. I find the rest of her content unsupported in the available literature. We have to be our own advocate, and do our own research, taking the good from various sources, not just one. Thanks for this great video, respectfully presented.

      I really don’t believe whether a person eats meat or is vegan is a factor in getting osteoporosis. I personally have osteoporosis and I am vegan. I have not always been vegan but only became vegan when I was diagnosed with possible Lupus and definitely Sjogrens. A plant based healthy diet has helped manage this and I do feel better eating a plant based diet. But as far as osteoporosis, I did not exercise, I am small, 95 lbs., only 4 ft 11 inches, white, light complexion and a family history as my older sister has osteoporosis and she is not vegan. I think it is important to eat healthy and exercise especially weight bearing.

      @@margarethawk3073 I largely agree with you. I always try to research the constantly changing and sometimes deceptive "science" across the spectrum, and I also allow for differences in individuals.
      I was a vegan for 5 years and felt great the first 2 of that. I gradually started getting negative symptoms and eventually had to eat animal products again. I've been keto-vore for 3 years and feel the best ever. I also have a small frame and found it very difficult as a vegan to get enough protein to build and maintain muscle mass and the energy for rigorous exercise. But that's my journey and I'm thankful I've found what works best for me, just as you seem to have. That's why I steer clear of extreme recommendations for every one. I pick and choose what works.

    Thanks, you answered so many of my questions about probable causes of my osteoporosis journey. In short, I am 74, very active, painfree currently. Had a hip replacement at 64 after a nasty fall while trail running on rocky desert trails. Osteoarthritis was mentioned so I changed my diet to include meat and started using goat milk in coffee and cooking. No alcohol or cigarettes and intermittent fasting for the past 6 years. I wear a fitness watch and complete 10K steps daily. The game changer I believe has been the addition of Strontium, Berberine, Boswellia extract, D3/K2 with my other vitamins. I put powdered Magnesium Glycinate in my morning coffee. I was following a vegetarian lifestyle for a few years before my hip fracture. My recent DECA scan reports normal bone activity with low probability of fracture. Thanks for your advice and input on this very important topic.

    I agree with a few commenters here.. sweet podcaster but…
    She had osteopenia
    She pushes Garden of Life vitamin mix that contains strontium. This substance was used in the famous COMB study (the NIH report is interesting ).. Strontium, along with K2, magnesium, D2 etc.. and weight exercise. There was a good result.. HOWEVER, strontium changes Dexa results which was not mentioned so you can’t be sure of the scan results and the reports I could find were all mixed on safety long term of Strontium which I found scary.
    Another TH-cam channel, Dr Susan Brown,PhD pushes the alkaline diet and (of course) her huge line of vitamins. She is a medical anthropologist and nutritionist.
    I am so very grateful to you for clarifying this topic. Too many out there are “experts” and muddy the waters for those of us who want REAL ANSWERS-based on actual science-not twisting the facts to suit the narrative.

You have a clear, concise way of discussing the topics and to be honest, I'd even prefer a bit more length/increased resolution for certain things (an example would be when a clinical term for an I/O condition is used in a synopsis, which might have the effect of excluding all the "grey area"/non-clinical status that most of us live in) in order to help those of us that are seeking to be proactive so as to not degrade into those negative clinical diagnoses, arguably the most frustrating part of self-directed health goals. I have the book. Watch all of your videos. I will never give up meat again (besides, I love it too much). My osteoporosis journey started in 1990….I switched to an all plant, low fat diet, because…fat was bad😂! Started to have weird things happen with my body…eye sight..numbness and tingling and especially bathroom issues(more on this later) Gained 80 lbs. Fast forward to 1998…moved back to a more balanced diet and exercise….lost 85 lbs. got married…now 37…husband tall and thin…junk food eater…hated meat..moved back to a more plant based diet..actually probably a more starch based diet…and lots of cola. Jump to 2004…now weighing 275 lbs…5’4” (obviously doing weight bearing exercise just by walking) decided to have gastric bypass…so my already screwed up metabolism becomes more screwed up….but gastric bypass diet is protein forward..who knew😂. Started to get really bad acid reflux, put on Pepcid. It cleared up..stopped Pepcid. 2009 rolls around..body goes into total melt down…muscle spasms all day and night…. Weird head zaps…can’t feel my left leg hit the ground…leg continually buckles…but…I’m only 155, so life is good…till it wasn’t…..diagnosed with MS at the end of the 2009(I believe this started in 1990)….2015..enter severe bouts of head pain, muscle spasms depression(MS treatments in my opinion) gained all my weight back….put on a drug called Baclofen for my muscle spasms…my husband finds me sitting cross legged on the floor….i don’t remember how I got there, but I never went to bed….ambulance 15 day hospital stay…two blood transfusions…nobody can figure out why all my numbers were so bad other than the lactic acid overload from muscle breakdown….continued with blood transfusions….until an intern asks if anyone gave me a B12 shot. Got one…blood stabilized, had to learn how to walk…and come to terms with the fact that I am now in end stage CKD. With nutrition..primarily fat and protein…got to stage 4 CKD….stabilized there and now bounce between Stage 3 and 4, my nephrologist can’t believe it’s from my diet. In 2017, I started to get severe acid reflux, with dysphasia…..was put on an immunosuppressant for my MS…had 4 bouts of severe aspiration pneumonia….now have damage in my right lung. At one point, my CO2 was in the 30’s my blood oxygen in the mid t0’s…ambulance, 15 day hospital stay and welcome 2018…..I stopped the immunosuppressant…didn’t take anything for a year..dysphasia under control with slower eating…bad habits changing…2019..at 59…weighing in at 288..I met super group BTS…we had a photo taken..I was mortified at how I looked next to my friend….along comes COVID..house bound…..lots of time to think about life and read….and went KETO full on towards mid 2021. October 5th…BTS tickets are on sale for their first concert since COVID….already lost 50 already and excited for the Hunger Games to obtain tickets to the concert. Started to get up in the morning, and as I was moving a pain seared through my chest…I swore I was having a heart attack…911…no heart attack..vitals excellent…transported to hospital as I could not move and was writhing in pain….perforated ulcer in the anastomoses. A common ulcer now being found in gastric bypass patients. 15 days in the hospital after life saving surgery….was put on Omeprazole twice a day for life…and this is where everything in my life came to full understanding….i was put on a tube fed diet for the ulcer to properly heal…..the tube feeding was 2600 calories of 70% carbs, 20% protein and 10% fat…I was tube fed for 6 weeks…thought it would jump start my diet…..nope..gained all 50 lbs back….went right back to Keto when the tube feeding was done, but had to start with just very soft scrambled eggs. Jump to ringing in 2023….i no longer eat anything made with grains or beans, except maybe in a very odd occasion. I drink primarily water 2-3 liters a day…..and eat a meat forward diet. I weigh between 155 and 160…depending on the day.
    Here is where the osteoporosis comes in…everything I have done since 1990..has lead to my diagnosis of osteoporosis in my hip and femoral head. My back is good…except L2-L3…having a fusion before the end of the year for that as the disc is gone……when I got the diagnosis…first thing I did was call my gastroenterologist office…..told him I was stopping Omeprazole immediately. He told me to move back to Pepcid….i have doubled up on K2 with MK7, and dropped MK4. I take magnesium, calcium..in the form you suggest and looking for a good strontium supplement. I refuse to take osteoporosis drugs. I want a REMS study, but live in the PNW and don’t know where to get one….i will travel where I have too to get one. I believe my bones density in my hips is compromised, but are not brittle. I have MS and fallen enough times and have never broken a bone…even up to less than a year ago.
    Your book was very insightful and I read it in one night. I have already started following some of your suggestions from videos. And I definitely eat a meat forward diet. Very little of anything with sugar or carbs.

    It's all so confusing, for sure. I think that the Save Institute actually recommends 80% vegetables. I remember her saying that they don't believe necessarily that you should be 100% vegan. Thank you for siting that study about vegetarians having the highest fracture rate. I had read that a few years ago, and it definitely helped steer me in a better direction. We also know that the pharmaceutical solutions are harmful in the long run, so that is not an option. We need more studies on how to repair our bones. Thank you for your efforts.

      @@Dr_DougLucas Thank you. I hope it's not gut dysfunction from the anti-nutrients creating problems. I eat a ton of veges and grains that are said to have anti-nutrients. I don't have any gut issues that I know of. I'm in my early 60's. I do take the precautions that I know about, such as soaking grains/nuts overnight. I do get protein from veges, nuts and quality meat and fish, and eggs.
      I don't plan to have my bones tested because the truth is, even if I found out I had "O", I wouldn't do anything different than I'm doing now. I don't believe medication is an option and I believe in healthy whole foods and "doing no harm" first, over supplements. I don't say that in a "cocky" manner, but I do resistance training with weights and body weight, and I walk every day, don't drink alcohol, and have my caffeine consumption down to practically nothing, and will soon be caffeine free. So I feel I'm doing all I can.
      Thanks for the video and your reply. You reply makes sense. I've added a bit more well sourced meat and fish to my diet to make sure I get enough protein. Let's just hope the anti-n's don't get me! (seriously :) )

    Well, my experience of being a vegetarian, then vegan for 10 years or more suggests that's exactly the reason for having osteoporosis in the first place. I think I've come down with it because my diet did not include enough proteins, far from it, as legumes have little protein content and that little is not as bioavailable as that in meat, and it lacked precious minerals such as zinc not to mention vitamin K2 and d3. Calcium apparently abundant in some veggies becomes unavailable because of the many phytates and oxalates that bind to it! Also an imbalance in the diet in favour of way too many carbs was an issue, and low vitamin A as only a small quantity of carotenoids from veggies converts into retinol which is what our body requires. Even the omega3s from linseeds chia etc. are a scam as again our body much favours those from fish. Add to this diet, plenty of exercise, and you get a full blown burn out. In my case, it was The China Study that totally misled me...

    Glory B and you both mentioned that a diet of fruits & vegetables would make the body more alkaline. My question is, does alkaline water have the same effect? I inherited an Enagic Luvaluk machine that turns tap water into a more alkaline water to drink (acidic water, usually siphoned-off, can also is used from skin cleansing to sanitizing). I drink 9.5 Alkalized water exclusively for several years now. I was also recently diagnosed with Osteopenia (70 yr. old female. 5'6". 240 lbs.), and I was wondering if the two are related. Also, Glory B mentioned that that acidic lemon juice can be alkalized in the body, so does so-called 'acidic' foods like meats and animal products also become alkalized during the course of digestion into the body? I prefer the Ketovore Diet and am concerned if being Keto or Carnivore would also cause bone-loss...🤔

    • @Dr_DougLucas
      @Dr_DougLucas  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It’s a confusing topic. Alkaline water is bad for digestion as it neutralized stomach acid. The only response then is more stomach acid production. It’s not healthy. Just drink filtered water.
      Meat won’t change your blood pH.
      Basically, ignore the pH fallacy.

      Thanks for passing it along. I have listened to the vegan argument time and time again. I don’t need to hear it again. A vegan diet when done correctly is a diet that eliminates many harmful foods available in our diet. However, the food industry has found a way to make many of those things in a vegan form which are more convenient to eat. A whole food vegan diet can heal many issues in the short term just like any elimination diet. However, long term protein and nutrient deficiency will catch up with vegans. This happens reliably for most people and the lifespan of a vegan diet is predictable. There are some exceptions but I have seen failure most commonly. It’s possible to eat a well designed whole food vegan diet that could sustain HealthSpan but it’s very difficult and most wouldn’t tolerate it.

    You said at 12:03: "Clearly we can see what his bias [plant-based] is going to be"
    Strictly speaking, it's only a 'bias' if it prevents the person from an objective examination of all relevant information thus leading to inaccurate conclusions.
    Now, indeed, Dr. Clapper may be biased or wrong on certain points, or he may not, but claiming 'bias' in this manner seems a bit loaded and preemptive. "Dr. Clapper's 'position' " I would think would be more neutral and objective. With evidence of bias to follow if available.

    Hello Dr. Lucas -- Is there any peer-reviewed research demonstrating for example in countries where a vegan diet is followed (India...) that the prevalence of osteoporosis is lower than where a non-vegan diet is followed? Also, there are groups and sects that are strictly vegan, for example Jains. Is there less osteoporosis among Jains or other pure vegan groups?

      Hello! I'd love to review data like this if it were available. Cohort and epidemiology can be helpful. The Epic Oxford study is a British study that shows increased fracture risk that I discuss. The US based study the Adventists Health Study looked at vegan diets compared to other populations and there were some benefits with chronic diseases but studies like this will always be challenging to interpret when you need to account for the other lifestyle factors that may attribute to the desired outcome. I'm always willing to review literature but I haven't seen any compelling literature to support a lower osteoporosis rate among those eating a plant based diet for an extended period of time.

      If we can trust the blue zone diets are reported accurately; High carb, minimal animal products; I have been trying to understand how these centenarians have escaped osteoporosis? Could it be that lifelong exercise and strong social ties outweigh the impact of diet?

    • @Dr_DougLucas
      @Dr_DougLucas  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@lydiaL2pg I could write a long post about the blue zone book and Netflix movie. The short of it is Dan Beuttner clearly states that a plant based diet is not what they eat in the blue zones but they made it a vegan diet to "simplify" the recommendations. There are so many confounding factors to his interpretation that saying any one of them is responsible for the benefit or that the longevity is in spite of that factor is impossible to know. You are correct that strong social connections, circadian rhythms and more are likely responsible for the benefits if there are any.

    Confused about 2 things:
    1) At 28:15 when you are listing a study that is cited in the article you are critiquing you discount it saying "that's going to be based off of food frequency questionnaires and we know that's not great evidence" but then later at 29:50 you cite another study that you say is a good one, yet it also seems to be doing just that (using food frequency questionnaires). How can you discount something based on something in one case but validate it in the other? Is this your bias coming through?
    2) Why is that study (Health effects of dietary risks in 195 countries, 1990-2017: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017) even included here? I understand it was cited in the article, but I would think discounting it because it is not about bones or osteoporosis makes more sense than the food frequency questionnaires. This article doesn't mention bone or osteoporosis. It does include a "diet high in red meat" and a "diet high in processed meat" in their selection of 15 dietary risk factors with various statistical and epidemiological evidence for the causal relationship for the specific diseases paired with each. I believe you are more non-red meat sources oriented, so that probably isn't an issue for your bias, but it isn't really something that proves or disproves anything in relation to osteoporosis and fractures. The only connection I see is that the meat eaters with these diseases would have been excluded from the study you use as proof that vegetarians and vegans are more at risk for fractures as they excluded anyone with diseases.
    What am I missing here for clarity? Can you clear up my confusion?

    • @Dr_DougLucas
      @Dr_DougLucas  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You are doing good research and asking great question. Nice work.
      The second study I think you are referring to is the oxford Health Study? This study doesn't use a food frequency questionnaire in the same way. it was also prospective not retrospective. Neither approach is ideal but with nutrition it's all we have for large populations.
      The second study is not about osteoporosis but about meat/non meat. They are using it to identify chronic disease in meat eaters versus non meat eaters. To clarify, I am an advocate for red meat so this article is pertinent to the argument.

    The hardest thing for me navigate is who to believe. All of these channels and "experts" with conflicting recommendations - I'm a lay person. How do I know what is accurate? I steer clear, rightly or wrongly, of those who have "expert opinions" and something to sell (e.g., supplements). It seems like a conflict of interest - and I have become cynical over time, unfortunately.

    I’m currently having trouble trusting doctors in general. I’m 68 years old I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes around 20 years ago. I had gestational diabetes when I was 30 and was told then there was a 50% chance I would get type 2 later and low and behold I did. I was also diagnosed with high blood pressure around the same time. I was put on Metformin and Lisinopril I lost weight and I was able to manage both. However, after I turned 60 I started having trouble controlling both the diabetes and the blood pressure. The dosage of the two medications were increased and two more medications were added. I was also then diagnosed with high cholesterol, and fatty liver which ultimately became NASH. More medications including something for my heart. Last week I had a bone density scan that showed osteoporosis another medication. I’m now taking 11 prescription medications and 6 supplements. I feel awful! I get diarrhea at least once a week, my back hurts constantly and I feel rundown and fatigued most of the time. I’m not overweight I’m trying to eat a fairly balanced diet. I try to walk for exercise but with my bad back its hard. I can’t help to feel that all these medications are not helping. But my doctors tell me I need to keep taking them. This is not how I wanted to spend my retirement years!

      It does. However, eating a diet that results in sarcopenia and a low BMI does not make it okay. Dr Gregor makes this point often in videos that BMI makes up the difference and that vegans have a lower BMI. However, if the diet is causing the low BMI I don't think that makes it less culpable.

      I have followed Dr. McDougall for years. His statement that a starch and vegetable diet is sufficient in protein and that any other way of eating will result in too much protein. Because protein is made of amino acids that excess amino acids will break down bones. It's the same argument I talk about here. It's a baseless argument. He says he welcomes differing opinions but he has always refused to talk to influencers in the arena of adequate protein and carnivore diets.

      He's not providing any information on HIS bone density but he looks frail for his age and his wife appears to not be able to stand for more than five minutes.
      I had bone density testing done recently: high normal. I make sure to get enough quality protein (animal) although I know my average daily calcium intake hovers around 600 mg. Possibly the calcium recommendations are not taking vitamin D status into account seeing as how the majority of the population has low vitamin D status. That has been my hypothesis for many years and the recent bone density result appears to bear that out.
      I've taken vitamin D3 for 20 years, get blood level checked every so often, and among other things, have been taking vitamin K2 MK7 and Mk4 since 2008. I think 20 years of HRT also factors in.
