    I am 72 years old and have severe osteoporosis due to genetics in my family. Grandmother, mother, aunt all from the same side of the family. I have looked into taking AlgaeCal in the past because of their proven reputation and success with this type of calcium, but the price is just not affordable for me even with the discount. It's discouraging that something that can be so effective for so many people is so costly to the point where it limits many people from being able to purchase and benefit from this supplement. If companies really want to help people then they need to stop charging excessive amounts of money for their products.

    Calcium gets in heart valves too! I'm an echocardiography tech. I had a 50 something year old patient recently with significant valve calcification. I asked about calcium supplementation to which she replied, yes, for years! Doesn't prove causation, but it gave me the willies.

    • @nmandowa
      @nmandowa 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      I think this is a far more complex question, and also more individually assessed than just one equals the other. I've been taking MCHA calcium for many years, plus I eat dairy. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis years before menopause. After my first three months on the supplements plus walking around the steep hills of San Francisco, I came home to a dexa that showed increased density without taking drugs. Now at 76, I've lost some of that gain, though still taking the calcium. But my C-score is just 1.

    • @elenanyhan4490
      @elenanyhan4490 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      It's not that simple. You don't ingest calcium and then it goes and sticks on your heart valves!! It's the whole mix of macro/micronutrients a person ingests. Trans fats, simple carbs, processed foods, etc., cause oxidation and resultant calcification in many parts of the body. Being a male, smoking, having diabetes, and hypertension are also risk factors. Your oversimplification doesn't do anybody any good, as 800 mg of calcium seems to help prevent heart disease in general. You are correct, a woman with calcified valves didn't get them from calcium supplements. Your willies were unfounded.

    This video is entitled "Best calcium Supplement for osteoporosis" so I stayed married to my phone listening to every single word to not really be convinced with the answer. Your videos are extensive with wonderful information but sometimes over inclusive info. I really dislike giving negative feedback but this subject is really important to me and so often I have listened to your videos when you have gone into excessive detail about a study only to hear you then say, but it was flawed etc and of no use, I find that frustrating when time is at a premium. I endured another lengthy discourse with this video, as I said married to my phone, trying desperately to concentrate and take in every word only to hear you say at the end, "I've got another video that will tell you my very best picks for calcium supplements" or similar words and so I am none the wiser and now will probably have to devote another 30 odd minutes to find out what. This is really important, does it have to be so extensive and confusing for those of us not statistically orientated? Some brief facts are great but not hours of discourse

      @@Dr_DougLucas Yep. The poster is correct. Please, we have been snowed enough. I personally cannot eat dairy. I have tried cow, sheep, goat and they al cause inflammation. I detest eating canned sardines and canned salmon and eating the bones, absolutely hate it. But I can't get algae anywhere and that does seem to be going to the ocean source. So, the product you recommend, Algaecal, I purchased. But now I also have a list of additional nutrients that I haven't been supplementing or seeking in foods. It's pretty overwhelming for those of us with dairy issues. And I am a whole foods enthusiast. If you could help people like me to do this for the most part without supplements, I would greatly appreciate it. Just know that what the poster said is true. We come to this with loads of frustration already in the barrel, so please, note the flawed studies, but don't dawdle on those points, move quickly to the better studies, why they are better, and exactly how to best implement the advice through diet and/or supplementation. Also, I know you don't advocate biophosphates, but I made the decision to take them for a year, but you had better believe I will give my body the building blocks to build good bone. Could you address that please? Thanks.

    Hi Dr. Doug, long time fan. This is your first video that has me a bit concerned about your advice. Many people below have asked about the wisdom of using a supplement with Strontium which can artificially improve DEXA results leading one to believe the bones are stronger than they are. There are more thumbs up on those questions than any other comments. Strontium seems to be the "magic" ingredient in Algeacal. I really think this needs to be addressed fully and in good faith. I don't want to be thinking my bones are fine and then surprise... broken hip and slow death.

    • @Dr_DougLucas
      @Dr_DougLucas  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Correct information, wrong perspective. Strontium will increase BMD faster than calcium. It's not artificial, it's simply what we would expect from strontium supplementation. The more important question is regarding strontium supplementation and bone strength and fracture risk. Here we don't have a clear answer. Strontium ranelate did decrease fracture risk in clinical trials. Does strontium citrate do the same? Hard to say. I like to use strontium in cases where low BMD is concerning but in conjuction with a comprehensive program that also addresses as many tools for strength as possible.

I read that strontium can give you a thrombosis, that's a no for me as I have had 2 already, DVT no less. Why do i have too much calcium in my blood? In winter I took 3000 iu of vitD3 a day. Apparently, you can have too much calcium with Vit D3. So I stopped. And I take as well K2, 120 g or whatever they use as volume a day. So where do I go wrong?

    I am 62, have severe OP but improved my scores of 6% in my back in past 2 years, and 7% in my hip and femoral neck in past year. With calcium citrate but a very serious regimen of exercise (weights and resistance) twice a week. I have a trainer. Do a lot of squats and jumping. I would never do this alone. I also swim and go for big walks with my dog every day. My trainer pushes me like crazy. I am now nearly in the osteopenia range in my femoral neck and am osteopenia in my hip. My AP spine has a T score of -2.9 down from -3.3 2 years ago. I am building bone!! I am so excited. I just started AlgaeCal with Strontium but feel a bit nervous about taking it if it has lead. What should I do, dr. Doug? I just discovered you recently but am already addicted to your videos! Will take the Master Class soon.

      Hi! Lead is a natural mineral like calcium or magnesium which is found in the earth, air and water. So every vegetable that grows in the soil or water has normal amounts of lead in it - the marine algae in AlgaeCal is no exception. Luckily, our bodies easily clear normal amounts of lead daily through urine, feces, and sweat. Every batch of AlgaeCal powder is tested by a third-party laboratory for microbial activity, heavy metals, mineral content and more. The final product is made in an FDA-inspected GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) plant where the highest standards are kept. AlgaeCal is FDA registered and has Health Canada approvals. It has been on the market for 20 years and has 3 clinical studies and a toxicology study showing extraordinary safety! I hope that helps :)

    I mentioned AlgaeCal to my endocrinologist and she immediately jumped in and said it doesn’t work. She said she didn’t approve of the studies for many reasons including that there were no placebos as part of the studies. She said my bones will not get better and that I’ll have them this way for life and the drugs she offers will prevent them from getting worse. She agreed the drugs can be harmful but of course she explained what you have said, that you take them for a certain period then stop for a period… She did say AlgeCal is a good supplement yet it won’t build bone. I was so upset and frustrated. How can doctors have completely opposite views of studies done? Sometimes it’s hard to trust anyone. Also I read about other products which have almost identical ingredients to AlgaeCal for much less money. I’m so confused and frustrated.

      "She said my bones will not get better" is an example of the nocebo effect which is the opposite of the placebo effect. If you believe what she said then it is true but the studies reviewed in this video show that BMD can improve. I choose to believe the information presented in the studies. "You are the Placebo" by Dr. Joe Dispenza is a great view on how beliefs impact your health. 1) If they were switching formulations 6 mo. into the study but did a 12 month annualization at 6 months, then how was the 2nd formulation included in that annualization? It sounds like it was all based on the first formalization?

    I use algaecal as a back up when I go on holiday and cant control my diet as well etc. I researched a bunch of calcium supplements and preferred this brand. I like the algae part. Like Dr Doug says it is best to get it from food and it is hard to know what you have done that increased your bone density but this has good research behind it as he says. I reversed my OP over a 2 year period. I followed so much of what Dr Doug says. I was not taking algaecal until a month ago. So this can be done by diet, the right exercise and the right supplements like k2, melatonin etc. I did not use strontium or hormones. My low back improved by 15% and total femur by 11%. I am not in the OP range now. Follow what he says. Figure out what you are doing that led to OP. Dr Dougs videos help with this part a lot too. It takes determination and discipline. It can be done! Many thanks to Dr. Doug!

    Thank you Dr Doug, for this info. A couple of questions: Regarding the guarantee of that product you mentioned, the company told you: out of 100,000 customers, they’ve only issued refunds to 6. This doesn’t say: 1. how many people actually submitted a refund request ; 2. how many of those 100k choose to have a Dexascan at 6 months after starting the product (given the cost of Dexascans, etc); 3. how many people are motivated to write for a refund. Just a few examples of how limited that data point was.
    Question: I’ve been taking New Chapter Bone Strength which is food-based, organic algae-based, since diagnosed with osteoporosis in January. Are Dexascans 6 months apart really beneficial to measuring changes? I thought it takes longer to see results. Thanks!

    I think it was lines pauling who said through his research that the minimum ratio of mag to cal was 2 to 1 ie...at least 2 mag to 1 cal. That was 40 years ago or more. There also used to be a supplement from an earth mineral with that ratio available..I forget what it's called it was like diorite or something like that. Vitmin d can raise your calcium and lower your magnesium as well. I think the ratio is what is most important with electrolytes. So many things correlated to high cal like fibroids alzhiemers sclerosis... so many things associated with high magnesium like less alzhiemers less stress better sleep less all cause mortality.

    • @Padraigp
      @Padraigp 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @user-xy8wu9yx8f mag 2 cal 1. Not the other way around. The status quo main stream is 2 cal. To one mag. You need to do your own research and decide what is best for you it also depends if you mean supplements and therfore that rests on what you already consume in your diet as to what you will supplement. This is supplements im talking about. It may also depend upon the form of magnesium if you absorb it better you may only need a 1 to 1. I wouldnt take cal without at least equal mag but you do you. Cal supplements have a ton of issues ..mag has lower absorption and also is depleted in foods and soils... the info I'm speaking comes from a perhaps controversial writer Patrick Holford and is based on study out of linus pauling that recommends this and so if you follow one school of thought you will have one idea another school of though another. For me it makes sense. But that's through a lot of sifting through nutrition books since the 1980s up to now and so doesn't take into account the ornate forms of magnesium etc. So you need to evaluate that in context. If you want to go with mainstream doctors advice take 2 calcium to 1 magnesium. Since I have no trust in the medical profession or the corrupt science industry I rather make up my own mind and look at the studied directly and try to evaluate it myself. So u suggest you do the same and also see what experiential feels good for you. You are responsible for you and I am for me and I don't hand that over lightly to anyone else nor do I take that responsibility. Its just something you can look up and look into if you're interested in including that in your calculations for yourself. God bless

If I am getting most calcium from my diet, can I cut down the AlgaeCal and Strontium supplementation in half? I am 71 years old, I weigh 120 and I am 5 feet tall. My DEXA scans came back with osteoporosis and osteopenia. I eat healthy and exercise. Seriously, I do exercise and I eat healthy. I recently had my levels of D tested and it was very high. But other papers state something different. A paper by Marx D et al.,."A review of the latest insights into the mechanism of action of strontium in bone," Bone Rep. 2020 Apr 24;12:100273 says that increased strontium accumulation is associated with reduced fracture risk in post-menopausal women.

      I’ve often wondered about that too, and from what I understand, the calcium in plant-based milk has been added, so it’s basically no different than taking a calcium carbonate supplement. It’s not really the same as getting it through foods naturally rich in calcium, like dairy products.

    So frustrating! I had placed an order with AlgaeCal right when you came out with the video saying take MCHC. I cancelled the AlgaeCal order... I even specifically commented on that video about algae and was again warned against it. I could've been taking the product for many months. I guess this is why it is called "practicing medicine". I hope in a subsequent video you discuss how much K and boron are okay to take as i have other supplements with these. The one reason I don't mind taking numerous supplements, as then I can control the amounts I'm consuming.

    Algaecal is more expensive than any other brand and unaffordable for many people. Plus it contains magnesium oxide which I understand is not the best form for bone support. Have you looked at any other plant-based calcium supplement brands? What about Better Bones Builder from Women’s Health Network, which is associated with Dr.Susan Brown’s program? People need to know about other options.

    I have one issue with AlgaeCal. They list 350mg Magnesium per capsule which normally would be a bit too much if one eats normal food but part of it is Magnesium Oxide. I know Magnesium Oxide or even Magnesium Carbonate is used in some supplements but really should not be. It has 2% absorbtion when better forms of Magnesium have 30-35%.

    Algaecal sounds great. But... What about the heavy metals present in Algae cal? My Aluminum levels shot up after using Algae Cal only for 2 weeks. There are actual studies also indicating that some of these Algae Cal supplements contains lead. Yes, it might be within safety standards but if you take it for several years, the heavy metals will accumulate. Your BMD will go up, but at what cost?

      Every batch of AlgaeCal powder is tested by a third-party laboratory for microbial activity, heavy metals, mineral content and more. The final product is made in an FDA-inspected GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) plant where the highest standards are kept. AlgaeCal is FDA registered and has Health Canada approvals. It has been on the market for 20 years and has 3 clinical studies and a toxicology study showing extraordinary safety!

    I just discovered you, Dr Lucas last week and have already watched Several hours of your videos!
    I'm at a loss.
    I've read that there is bone pain with Osteomalacia, but there's not much discussion about it. And can there be pain with osteopenia? Do they go together? First Vit D was 14.6 and took several years to get around 35. With K2 it's increased to around 50. Recent DEXA compared to two yrs ago showed lumbar is better, guessing from doing back extensions, but wonder if compression of disc's factors in? Report said femur is worse! Both patellas are off center out and rotated a little. I've lost muscle too, so I started using hiking poles 2yrs ago and that helps some. It's getting difficult to walk. The PCP has only reported previously that I have osteopenia until now, and now asks if I would consider medication to help strengthen my bones? I'm more than frustrated!! Any thoughts?

    Thoughts about the Magnesium in this product? Oxide salt?

    • @Dr_DougLucas
      @Dr_DougLucas  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Chelated mags especially glycinate are bulky molecules. Adding the same amount of mag as a chelated version would increase the capsule number and size. Mag oxide while less bioavailable provides more mag per capsule. We are also always adding additional mag anyway and don't get all of our mag from AC products. There are infinite ways to spin a combo product and while I would prefer a different mag I understand their intent here.

      @@Dr_DougLucasthank you! I take magnesium glycinate and was somewhat concerned about adding AC with the mag oxide, although inferior to the glycinate.

    Consumer Labs reported that AlgaeCal has a high lead level

    • @Dr_DougLucas
      @Dr_DougLucas  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      AlgaeCal is tests every batch for purity and environmental toxins. Whenever a product is grown in the wild unwanted things can creep in. They control for this and are very responsible about reporting and quality. The contaminants in these supplements are not likely of significance when considered in the big picture of toxins exposed to on a daily basis.

    Dr. Doug,
    I was disappointed to read that Algaecal contains magnesium oxide. This is the cheapest and most badly absorbed magnesium. Also, it can be detrimental to the heart, kidneys, liver, digestive system, and high blood pressure.

      thanks for your comment! I would prefer a chelated source of mag as well but after discussing it with the AlgaeCal team I see the purpose here. Chelated mags especially glycinate are bulky molecules. Adding the same amount of mag as a chelated version would increase the capsule number and size. Mag oxide while less bioavailable provides more mag per capsule. We are also always adding additional mag anyway and don't get all of our mag from AC products. I would assume that in order to take advantage of the money back guarantee, you'd have to get a DEXA before you started on it, and then again 6 months later. How many people are getting DEXAs every 6 months? Maybe that's why they only have six people per year taking advantage of it.
