I come from a line of women who had osteoporosis and am taking meds that put me at risk. I’m trying to get off of supplements by eating healthy and exercising. I have a cup of homemade whole milk kefir every day in my smoothie. The low lactose and high probiotics help with gut health. I try for a diversity of plants (30+ per week) and will start adding some prunes to my diet. I have at least one meal a day with meat protein. So far the Dexa scans have been good. Fingers crossed that a healthy diet will continue the good results.

But my Mom had severe osteoporosis and my sister and I do as well. I now take Calcium as well as my high dairy and salmon diet. I take vitamin D, 2000 mg in the summer and 3000 mg in the winter when there is less sun exposure. My sister and I took Alendronate Sodium (Fosamax) when we were Osteopenia. Now we are osteoporosis. I eat every other day sheep yogurt with blueberries for breakfast, I am grain free and sugar free, I eat protein everyday with my meaIs, eat grass fed and grass finish meats, pasture raise chicken and eggs, wild salmon and fish buy everything organic as much as I can. I am 65 years wise 106 pounds and lift weights 4 times a week just for 20 minutes because I have to take care of our 26 years old quadriplegic cerebral palsy son who needs 24 hour care. I am supposed to have a bone density test done this month but I am nervous about the results because I am not taking any medication for osteoporosis, I tried reclast once but I decided not to continue I guess I have to bite the bullet and have my test done. Hello! I felt obligated to write so if you are interested to see why I'm writing this to you, you could read my long story that I just posted on here in the last hour) 😁
But I would like to comment about Dexa Scans.
For this "gold standard" of bone scans, the range "norm" is based on the bones of THIRTY YEAR OLD WOMEN!!!
I'm turning 63 this month and even though I think I'm still young, nothing on my body is as good as it was when I was 30!! 🤣🤣🤣
Also, if you read my story, while I was researching everything I was dealing with, I watched a TH-cam video called "Selling Sickness". (I didn't write about the documentary in my previous post), but this yt video is a French documentary about the pharmaceutical industry.
There was a whole section about bone density drugs (why I was interested in watching it) and specifically an entire story about the drug Fosamax and a 59 year old woman who went and had a bone density scan and was advised to take the drug Fosamax.
I highly recommend watching that video if you have enough interest to... I believe the section of the documentary regarding that woman's particular story was in the second half but you can skip forward to find it. (It's a sad but important story to know IMHO)
All that just say that when it was recommended to me to take a bone density drug and I did some research on that drug, I realized that the SIDE EFFECTS are WORSE THAN THE HELP that the drug gives anyone in the first place!
I could go on more, but often times the bones end up weaker than they were in the first place.
Our bodies have osteoclasts and osteoblasts that renew our bones ongoing....every 10 years our ENTIRE skeleton is renewed because those two functions are continually doing their job!
The osteoclasts remove OLD bone and the osteoblasts put down NEW bone.
I believe in God and I believe this is a God thing, and it's amazing of course! (just my opinion haha)
The drug that was recommended to me slapped down new bone, but NOT necessarily in the correct place! That drug function didn't make sure that the old bone was removed!
So that would be like having a crumbling brick foundation and then slap down a bunch of cement on it and say....
oh look it's stronger and more dense now!
No. That would not be a strong foundation.
Lastly, even though it wasn't on the brochure, some of the bad side effects of the drug that I was recommended to take (by the bone doctor that I only went to once) were ⬇️
      pneumonia
      shingles
      and osteosarcoma
Osteosarcoma in plain English is BONE CANCER!
So the very drug that they would recommend to help my bones be stronger and more dense could potentially cause me to have bone cancer!
Lastly, everyone should know that when doctors are in medical school currently, they only spend 4 hours learning about nutrition to help their patients have better health but they spend weeks and weeks and weeks on what pharmaceutical products they should prescribe for any and all problems. 🙄
All the best to you 😊 I think knowledge is POWER!
      From Cynthia in Minneapolis

I'm concerned because I watched my father deteriorate from multiple myeloma before some of these new treatments were available. I'm not a medical professional, but I'm in this doctor's online Healthspan where we learn about many ways to treat osteoporosis and stay healthy in general. If I were in your position I would look at all options, not just dietary, for something as serious as multiple myeloma. Good luck to you in your health journey.

But about a year ago I developed a horrific cough that caused me non stop coughing with mucus. I had to add a nebulizer & more medications. After much research I learned that dairy & many meats caused mucus to form. Some fish as well. So I have almost completely eliminated these products. My cough is finally under control. If I eat one small lactose free ice cream scoop, within a few hours I am full of mucus & coughing for the next 24 hours.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor. Always consult your own doctot.
Hello, bones are mainly composed of two parts: 1) protein (90% collagenous protein, for example collagen and 10% other proteins, for example "osteocalcin, osteonectin, osteopontin, fibronectin and bone sialoprotein II, bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), and growth factors"), and 2) minerals (mainly calcium and phosphorus, but also "significant amounts of bicarbonate, sodium, potassium, citrate, magnesium, carbonate, fluorite, zinc, barium, and strontium").
So, to summarize, mainly you need protein, and calcium, phosphorous (less than calcium), potassium, magnesium, zinc, barium, strontium). You can find protein and minerals in short grain brown rice (commercial long grain brown rice is too polished, don't use it); oats, wheat kernels and other grains, plus a variety of dried beans, plus orange/yellow veggies, green leafy veggies, plus a small amount of fermented foods, plus seaweed. Seaweed is chock full of minerals. Some seaweed contains more calcium than milk. Delicious recipes to be found on Japanese, Korean, and Chinese TH-cam channels. Please do your research. Stressing bone, (by exercising for example), increases its volume. You may, of course, add some animal protein and fermented milk such as kefir, as tolerated. Fermenting decreases the lactose.
So, all is not lost. Take heart. The most important: whole grains, veggies, SEAWEED (a big factor, but you only need a little bit), a few seeds and nuts, animal protein and fermented milk, as tolerated, fermented veggies and beans. And fruit, of course.

Many of us (me included) cannot eat dairy and choose to not eat animal products. I have had osteoporosis for several years and switched to a plant based diet 3 years ago. My diet change did not increase my osteoporosis, nor did it improve it. However, including heavy weight bearing exercises has been shown to reverse osteopenia/osteoporosis. I'm scheduled for my dexa later this year and hoping my numbers have improved. Perhaps this is a topic you can discuss in another video.

This is long, so I apologize, but my story is testament that dairy, prunes and meat protein ARE crucial to bone health.
I'm going to be 63 at the end of this month (July 2024).
I've been a dancer/dance teacher my entire life... So, fairly strong.
But I've had an ACL replacement in 1995) and I've had both hips replaced (2006/2016)... NOT from genetics but from an unfortunate incident allowing someone to push on my straddle stretch (which was already crazy amazing)... But it caused an unbeknownst-to-me small tear in my labrum. 3 or 4 years later that became a problem and it morphed into some arthritis and the hip replacement. The other hip replacement eventually was the cause of walking not properly during all of the above.
So that said, slowly over time I was not doing as much activity as I would prefer... but in December of 2022 while on a trip to New York city, I did go ice skating at Rockefeller Plaza and I took a tap dance class with my 22 year old son (who took dance from me for 14 years) and was an excellent tap dancer himself.
Then after eating out at a restaurant in Manhattan, while leaving down two sets of dark steps (and wet!), I slipped and ended up breaking my FEMUR.
I now know that when my foot went under me and all my weight slammed onto my foot as I went down the stairs, it was because my ACL knee had too much scar tissue that wouldn't allow the knee to bend enough so the femur was what gave.
This occurred on a Friday at 6pm. I thought I had torn out my ACL so we ubered to a hospital in Brooklyn near where we were staying (thinking that it was not that big of a deal... Torn ligament, bummer, but deal with it kind of thing) The first hospital had no orthopedic doctor so they sent me 4 hours later to the next hospital nearby. There weren't even any rooms available and the ER hallway was lined with beds on either side where people were camped out instead of being in a hospital room.
Obviously, breaking your femur IS a big deal but the soonest I could have surgery was going to be Monday. Logistically hanging out in the hallway for 2+ days at a hospital in a city I don't live in was not a good option, so at 5am, I left the hospital to go back to our Air BNB.
Because of Compartment Syndrome was a concern to fly, I ended up renting a car that next day, having to go along myself since my son wasn't old enough to rent a car. Then we went to the wedding that we were there for and finally on Sunday morning, I rode home for 20 hours to Minneapolis and had my surgery in Minneapolis on Monday. (Yes, WITH the broken leg in a brace and crutches, putting no weight on it of course) Yes. It was painful and due to crazy cyber attacks, paper prescriptions, and unfortunate timing, I didn't even get any strong medicine until Sunday around noon when we left Brooklyn. (Except for whatever they gave me on Friday at 7pm)
So the point of my story was that my femur was shattered in more than 17 little fragments and I had trauma surgery but when my leg healed it was literally ONE INCH SHORTER than the other. So! 5'8"exactly on my right leg....
    5'7"exactly on my left!
More than one doctor (including a leg-lengthening specialist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN ) told me to SHORTEN MY OTHER LEG!!! (Because my left leg had too many complications with the screws from the ACL and the hip implant blah blah blah)
Ummm NO. Hell to the NO!!!
But amazingly my hair stylist knew a leg lengthening surgeon because years before her son had been a Gopher football player needing a surgery like that. I reached out to the doctor and even though he was practicing at a CHILDREN'S hospital, he agreed to see me.
This is the point of my entire story; because I HAD that leg lengthening surgery in January of this year. (They cut your bone, insert a MOTORIZED rod to slowly lengthen by communicating with a machine) They took out my original rod and plate and screws.
Anyway! Despite a bone doctor TELLING ME TO TAKE BONE drugs, I researched that intensively and knew that it would be WORSE to take a drug.
I told my leg lengthening surgeon that I would create HEALTHY NEW BONE BY HOW AND WHAT FOODS I WAS AND WOULD BE EATING.
I researched everything regarding the growing of new bone, my age etc etc.
Of course, we all know about vitamin D for our bones, but I learned that vitamin K was ALSO important .
So I looked up all the sources for these things and this was what I did:
I was eating organic prunes every day. I was eating skyr yogurt (Icelandic) which is an extremely good source of calcium. Whole organic milk in my lattes. Pasture-raised organic eggs daily. Gouda cheese (because it has vitamin K), grass-fed steak or grass-fed beef and some of my favorite vegetables.
My surgeon has done 1000 of these surgeries and he's been instrumental in development of procedures that they are now currently using. Even at my last appointment in May there was a doctor from Australia and a doctor from Finland and even my own trauma surgeon (who originally also told me NOT to do this surgery) was AT MY APPT because they had come to learn how to do these procedures from my leg-lengthening surgeon!
It turns out that I am only one of the THREE OLDEST PATIENTS that he has ever had.
And he told me that he didn't HAVE to do my surgery but he believed that he COULD do it and help me, but also, he said he knew that I had it within me to do everything he said and what was needed to do.
I was on crutches for 3 months... I used the leg lengthening machine several times daily for almost all of that (⅛ a MM extending that motorized rod at a time) and here is the most AMAZING part.... ⬇️ near the end of that process (as it was successfully working), my doctor told me that my femur bone was GROWING LIKE THE BONES OF A KID!!!!!
I attribute that to how I was eating! And I was eating these VERY THREE THINGS!
    *HEALTHY DAIRY
    *ORGANIC PRUNES
    *PROTEIN FROM MEAT
So! If you read all this, thank you and I hope that I help someone. 😊 But I will just say that this video is SO TRUE and what we eat is crucial to not just the health of our bones, but also to the health of our ENTIRE body!
    Cynthia from Minneapolis

@@Dr_DougLucas Thank you for reading my novel haha.
Your video just made me so excited because I researched everything and came to the conclusion on my own and then your video confirmed my layman's conclusion!
Lastly, this is a crazy sidenote... While I was in the process, there were a couple times where my doctor was out of town (I was going weekly). And I mentioned how I was making sure to get Vitamin K for my bone and the orthopedic (also a leg -lengthening doctor) actually said to me..."vitamin K...? I thought it was Vitamin D") WOW.
How crazy is it that I knew more about it than he did!??
      LOL... Knowledge is POWER! 😁

All these yrs until last yr when diagnosed with osteoporosis l started searching natural help refusing fosamax. Don't like prunes so doing boron 125 ml daily and starting your exercises .

Regarding prunes - do you get the same benefit from just eating the plums? Is there a nutrient change once dried other than density? Also, most commercial dried fruit is high in sulfur due to preservatives (I am extremely allergic) but natural sulfur is an important building block, would the higher sulfur content contribute to the positive effects of prunes, if so would you get the same positive effects from organic plums dehydrated at home?

Instead of prunes, could we just take a boron supplement. Also, would whey protein powder be a good substitute for eating animals since I am a vegetarian. Regarding protein, I have heard others say that too much protein acidifies the body causing the body to leach bone to reduce the acidity increasing fracture risk. Is there any basis to this?

This is where I get confused. There's a history of Alzheimers in my family, and so much research seems to support a plant based diet to slow cognitive decline. But then for bone health it's best to eat animal protein. So do I just have to decide what's more important, to prevent fractures or keep out of a memory care unit????

All of the information about a plant based diet for Alzheimer’s prevention is coming out of the 7th day adventist community. Their “science” should not be trusted. Do a search for Dr. Shawn Baker + Hal (can’t remember his last name. ) He runs memory care facilities in Arizona and has reversed some of his residents Alzheimer’s to the point that they could return home and take care of themselves - with diet!
