Many of those iPhone pictures had an uncanny look to them. Best I can describe is like you were taken out, edited digitally, and then put back in a slightly different layer and position. Like you got "fixed in post". It's hard to describe. They made for a good picture in a vacuum, but were less real looking than the Samsung version of the same pic. Great content!

This is excellent. I was trying to describe how some smartphone cameras "meld" the shades of Black peoples different skin tones and this is something I can finally show them as an example. MKBHD does something like this with his camera tests at the end of the year, but I prefer this one. Would love to see you put the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro through this as well since they claim to have added more machine learning/photo processing for darker skin tones

There are huge amount of people with dark or brown skin and most phones isn't good at representing them correctly. And nice tips for the iPhone to allow auto edit to enhance the look. It would've been nicer if few auto edits were shown to see how well it does. Really appreciate this video ✌🏼❤

Really interesting to see this comparison as a 15 pro max user. This explains why the S24 may have blown out highlights and not as much shadows in HDR compared to the iPhone. But I was really disappointed how much the iPhone was smoothing and darkening your skin tone. I am also noticing the S24 is handling night time lens flaring way better than iPhone.

This is a fantastic video! I really appreciate your focus on this topic--as you mention at the beginning of the video, I think accuracy of skin tone representation is very important and is often neglected in other reviews. I was wondering if you could do the same comparison between the S24 Ultra and S23 Ultra (or whatever other Samsung phone you have access to), as I would like to see if there are any significant improvements this year. I would also like to see a few more images like the one you have with the Tik Tok legends to see how the cameras do with a variety of skin colors in the same shot in different lighting. I currently have a Note 20 and while the 1x camera gives a fairly reasonable skin tone representation, the selfie camera makes me look pale and loses most of my color. My wife's iPhone 12 Pro makes me look...orange. I'm trying to decide on my next phone so this type of comparison is very useful.

First time really seeing someone that cares about this. I bought a 14PM just after the S22 ultra and I was chocked how dark my pictures especially selfies look. Apparently the iPhone uses the same skin tones technics used in the movie industry that was to make caucasians look less pale. And google started creating an algorithm from the pixel 7 that did a better representation of people of different colours.

Both are great cameras ( I just pre-ordered the S24 ultra) basically it comes down to the AI tuning of the photo- and that's very subjective. I think the S24 is a bit more realistic and captures more details while the iPhone adds a bit more prost processing voodoo to try and make the photo more appealing (kind of like a beauty filter). But this is a great comparison! Also mixing more races in the same photo is interesting to see how the AI balances all the skin tones. Great video!

My EDC is Samsung's Note 20. When I first purchased my Note 20, I saw similar photo differences between my Note 20 and friends iPhone as you demonstrate with the with iPhone 15 and S24. My Note 20 images were very much improved over their iPhone images. Of course, using the in-cellphone photos app or on a computer one can make them equal. However, all the tweaking today's photographers perform on their digital images to me makes them more of a graphic artist than photographers.

Fantastic video that opens the eyes of other people who may not appreciate how cameras can affect and alter national skin colors. It's tough because both do a good job in different ways, and different shades of people show up differently. But iPhones 10 definitely too but iPhones definitely tend to make it darker, which is great for lighter skin people, but skews anybody else with any pigmentation. Samsung does a great job also, but tends to saturate colors. But an outstanding video nonetheless. Thank you

I ordered an s24u yesterday. And watched a bunch of comparison videos between s24u and the IP15 cameras. Right now Samsung's mid tones seem to be blown up which is why you look a little lighter, it's also why some highlights and midtones are clipping. I really hope they fix that asap or we get an update before the phone launches. That said, on every single comparison, without missing a beat. IP15 had a horrible reddish tint on the skin tones and any red in the skintone was exxagerated. Which is kinda wild to me, since iphones are the "social media person" phone. Every 14 year old girl is ready to murder to get their hands on the latest iphone so they can post their instagram photos with the latest iphone camera or whatever. You'd think the red skin issue would be .. you know, ... an issue.

It was genius to bring in more coloured people with someone with whiter skin which allows the camera to generate better algorithm and learn more about skin tone representation in photos.

Great idea to do a skintone comparison (and shocking outcome to see how the "king of phone camera's" messes up here), but nowhere does it become clear to me in this video if you're using the front or back camera for the selfies (with and without colleagues). Since front cameras (12 mp in this case) have always been subpar compared to back cameras, I still have the oldschool habit of never using the selfie camera. I just turn around the phone to take selfies with the back camera and hope it comes out straight and if not try again LOL. Fortunately, I rarely take selfies.

Wow.... @ 8:20 that was a serious difference. I appreciate the way youre bringing this data forward. I am white so ive not had the same experience with this as people of collor so i am very interested to hear how they feel and think about this. I mean, phone images are often the way people build an image that they then base their reputation around today. Social media being as big a thing as it is and all. I certainly dont think it is of nefarious intent on Apple's part by any means Im just saying I wonder how many people could have been possibly impacted by this and maybe didnt even know...? Idk. Apple certainly should at least take a look at the software and see what they can do to work on the problem.
