I love the speech at the end by Dana Andrews. Its exactly what America did do to Imperial Japan, the most ruthless, vindictive, arrogant war machine ever created. They started it...we finished it. I feel sorry for anyone who is confused or upset by that.
It apparently worked at the time as a patriotic and propaganda film, but the Hollywood fantasy is too much for any real scholar of WWII today. The Japanese would never have allowed a defiant speech or the slightest disrespectful behvior. The Kempetei (Japanese Secret/Military Police who did the questioning) did not operate this way, either. It was all far, far more brutal than depicted. I'd recommend reading real P.O.W. accounts, such as those summarized in 'Pacific War P.O.W.: A Few Remaining Skeletons' (which is what the Japanese commander in Burma called them when they arrived for slave work on the Death Railway).
It is an extremely hokey film-however there was no hokum about the courage, skill, and patriotism of the Doolittle Raiders. And the cruelty and criminality of the Japanese warlords was legitimate.
I have enjoyed this film since first watching it on TV (commercials and all) in the early '60s. Then, to me, it was simply a war movie, but then I came to realize its function as a propaganda film - cum - drama. And recognize the fine Chinese actors seen thereafter in so many other movies. The last time I saw Richard Loo (General Mitsubi) on screen was in a small role as the National Chinese Major in "The Sand Pebbles."
The dramatics were a bit cheesy in my opinion, But considering when this was made, it has a heavy patriotic theme. There could have been more said, like in "Dedication to those flyers and other servicemen who have and continue to fight for freedom and America". (My afterthought for the filmmakers). Also, despite all the other fake Asians, it was good there was at least Chinese who portrayed a Chinese man.
"There are over 100,000 Japanese nationals in internment camps in the US..." or, "There are over 100,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry in concentration camps in the US..." TIFIFY
First tune was curious, God Save the King, though only a few bars, then to a US tune, then back to God Save the King? Surprised to hear this in a US movie.
This tune is the same for the British and American songs: "God Save the King" (British) and "My Country Tis of Thee" (American).❤ I'm 69yrs and remember learning it in elementary school.

This movie was good. But,a bit up setting about the treatment of prisoners. I read a book about how the prisoners of war and in general were treated. No ,those against us,will not be going to heaven. So Soddy!!! Too bad for those who commited crimes !!
What a silly thing to say. If there exists a God with the power to influence human events, then all good people must be its sworn enemy. Go for a walk in the woods and see all his creations eating each other alive until they themselves are killed by ticks, disease, or starvation. Open your eyes. See the real world.
@@TennesseeT Lots of reasons. Parents pass it on to their children who then make it part of their identity, without really thinking about anything other than pleasing their parents. It was also used as a form of social cohesion, being taught to children in schools etc.. Also, religion is often said to be the opiate of the masses. Why be scared and confused by the unsolved mysteries and cruelty of nature when you can just ignore them and say God is awesome and kind. It’s all quite silly.
And I suppose you would wipe out all History that doesn't fit your narrow ignorant views. It was a different era. If you are educated, you know not to act or accept these views. I myself know that such behavior is not now tolerated. But at the same time I realize this is history and should not be censored. If you still think like you do. Then you are no better than the people who started the G.D. War.

Wrong America started it when they put sanctions on Japan
I actually was friends with a few of Doolittle's Raiders, it was an honor to know them.
At 19 our Dad was drafted into WW2. Was shot twice. 2 purple hearts.
I love this movie so much. The honor in this film is massive. As it should be.
This is a Great BEAUTIFUL Movie ThankYou!!
I was 10 years old when I watched this movie. I cried my eyes out.

At the point when they made this movie I don't think they had any idea just how vicious the Japanese really were
My great-uncle Roy my grandma and my other grandma could not even be near Japanese people they had their reasons

Great historical record of propaganda of the time, but cringe worthy guess at what went on there. These guys were not snowflakes, I guarantee you.
Propaganda? How can You Guarantee that IDIOT, WERE YOU THERE?
I doubt there even would have been a court room situation .........maybe a torture for information and bullet situation.

When it comes to corruption in politics, and war propaganda, nothing much has changed in the last 82 years, when it comes to these two nations.

I guess they couldn't find any Japanese actors in 1944 so they had to use Chinese actors.

Watching on my Laptop "TOSHIBA" (made in Japan?) Who really won the war????
So you mean just because Japan produces laptops ( and you're using it ), we should revise history and rewrite that Japan really won the war?

Snowflakes?
Military aircrap?
It would actually be a wholesome movie if not for the blatant racism.
Japan declared publicly in print, film, and radio that it was a race war, designed to "drive the white man from Asia."
Racism was in the air back then.
While what you say is true - that is not the intent of the movie. It is to portray things as they were at that time in history.
Where is my factual, scholarly comment from actual personal research? (God, I hate the censorship on yt.)
