@@JohnMinehan-lx9ts Its a shame that the western is now a niche genre. Western films are usually so good, but man they just don't perform the way they used to.
Part of this films problem is the cost. The cost to make it was 100 million dollars each for a genre that just doesn't perform as well in the modern day. If we want the genre to pick back up I think the best way to handle it is by giving them small budgets, like maybe 20 mil, and gathering an audience over time. 100 mil is simply too much to be profitable.

For example, “Part 1” is about Costner’s story in its full length with a beginning, middle, and conclusion. Then “Part 2” The woman who loses everything and falls in love with the Calvary man. “Part 3:” The Wagon Train. Then “Part 4:” Horozon the final movie when all three plots connect? And if Costner wanted to release this version, he could have edited it with them running concurrently like this as a special “Director’s Cut”.

@@Boblovesmovies I agree. I think once the audience sees all 4 parts, it will be an incredible experience. However, it felt like watching the first act of a movie without seeing the second act. I loved what I saw, and I actually got really invested in the characters, but I just think the average moviegoer needs to have some form of a conclusion at the end of a movie. I know this is just part 1, but most epic trilogy movies at least have a minor subplot with a conclusion at the end of the film. For example, “The Lord of the Rings” is a very similar style to this film. At the end of “Fellowship of the Ring” it has a somewhat conclusion to a small story thread at the end, but it also ends with Frodo and Sam continuing on without the Fellowship. This doesn’t have that minor subplot with a conclusion before teasing it is moving forward. It just abruptly ends. I believe I would have at least had a small character have a mini story within the film that has an epic conclusion, like sacrificing himself to save the wagon train or something that makes it feels like you at least had some payoff at the end of part 1 to hold you over. I think not having that ending makes it feel more like a tv miniseries in theaters. I’m okay with it, but I feel bad for Costner because I see the ambition, but I don’t think he’ll find an audience until it’s released on “Max” or “Netflix” in all 4 parts.

Read to the end for my take:
I walked away from Chapter I confused and feeling disappointed. It was not at all what I had hoped or expected. I fell asleep at one point, because it was not holding my interest. Some of the portrayals revealed quite dull existences. The settings were stunning at times, which I assume were filmed along the Gila and Colorado Rivers infusing flickering flames of windswept aspens along the ridges and all.
Returning home at 7:15p, I was stone cold asleep by 7:45. Exhausted. (I am a little older than Costner, and I have a heart condition.) My brain and being worked hard to climb to the top of the theatre to view an anticipated plot that did not seem to exist.
Many, including myself at one point, are seeing this first edition as a scrambled, poorly edited, over-worked script with a misdirected and fractured presentation. We are, including the ‘professional’ critics, mistaken. What was presented, though not specifically denoted in a traditional sense, were several trials, trails, and tribulations focused on a destination and destiny - Horizon - by a diverse and eclectic series of adventurists.
There were a few constants. Natives, violence, brutality, deviance, almost universal ignorance of most forms of civility, obsessive cursing (or simply a lack of vocabulary development/education), human failings, and horses. There was a sprinkling of educated elitism with the introduction of the British-like couple, but I doubt those traits endure without a few crushing blows from the realities of the place and times. It was a depiction of several streams of people and possessions rooted in the immigrants to America - both original known as natives and the savage offspring of the Colonies.
This was a brutal portrayal of the birth of a civilization, a society and culture, crawling through its infancy, from different origins but with an almost universal instinct of survival and how to maintain it. I will be there on August 16th to participate as the clash of these trails explode in a place named Horizon and stumble into adolescence on their way to being molded by their culminated pressure chamber of restrictive environment.
Rest assured, I do trust that Mr. Costner will continually increase the brightness within the mind’s eye and the warmth of the hope in hearts of the audiences as he brings about a stunning conclusion in an epic example of the historical Western vision. As for Chapter I? Being blinded by the brilliance of genius can negate the opportunity to be blessed by it. Do not miss the chance offered with Horizon.
Bravo, Mr. Costner. All the best in your future endeavors.

I appreciate the comment and reading your take on the film. I agree that the British couple definitely showed that touch of elitism. I’ll be there for chapter 2 as well despite my feelings of the film. At the end of the day, it’s a well-made film from a production standpoint, it has the pieces to be something special, and I did enjoy many of the performances. I am curious to see how the stories will come together.

I went into the movie with the understanding that this was going to be part one of a four-part series, so I wasn't disappointed. I noticed some of the same things you mentioned in regard to the time span between scenes. One example would be when Caleb meet's Costner's character after his bath. How did he just leave a house in the middle of nowhere and then be in the middle of the town? So that was a little confusing unless Costner's character took a two-hour bath? But all in all, I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to Chapter two in August.

I'm going to nerd out a bit here. Certain technical aspects of the film i.e. firearm selection was incorrect. There were too many cartridge guns. Those were basically non existant in the 1850's and would not have been seen until the late 1860's. It would have been cap and ball revolvers and single shot muskets/rifles.

If you go see this Movie as a fan of the genre AND you know it's chapter one of 4 then it's great❤ and leaves you looking forward to finding out how things end for all these protagonists. The writing and structure could definitely have built to more of a climax at the end of the film, possibly making it a more satisfying viewing experience as a stand alone film (like for example the Lord of the rings trilogy) I specifically went to the theatre to see the landscapes on a grand scale, also to show support for these types of projects and enjoyed the experience to the max.

For a younger audience, like those 40 and younger, I don't think they have developed enough perspective on those times to be able to appreciate how different and _hard_ the frontier life really was. Also patience is required with a project of this scope. People raised on the drivel the modern entertainment industry has become will have a challenge in comprehending what is on display here. Costner is almost 70 and has done a lot of research on this subject over the decades and for those who know the period, this is very authentic. For a generation that was raised on video games and all the whiz bang of it, this will force them to really sit up and focus and learn what life is really like when the veneer of our modern civilization gets stripped away. This is a picture of life where there is little to no law around to protect everyone from the criminal element. This is the base fundamentals of what life gets to be like when evil is left to run wild.

All great novels start slow and introduce the characters and basic storylines before they get truly moving and exciting. Even if all this chapter does is introduce the majesty of the west with a thrilling score it will be more than worth it. Costner is a meticulous producer/director/actor with a crew of top notch pros behind him. My guess it is as close as I will ever get to feeling like I was there. As always I think he is trying to teach us something we all need to learn. Once again, can’t wait to watch. Next week I hope. Great things take time. Be patient. It will be worth it.

Maybe Costner's story could have had its seeds in the Civil War, my point being: the conflict was so immense and tragic, it gave incentive for people to move west and start a new life where the regional split was not so defining. For that matter, how about another good Civil War movie? Did "Gods and Generals" do damage to that category? It was turgid and pretentious, a disastrous follow-up to "Gettysburg." Ted Turner wanted to prop up the South: revisionism.

I concur with your evaluation of the film. I would also note that its three-hour duration made it challenging to watch, especially since, as you mentioned, the multitude of characters made it difficult to form an emotional connection with any of them. The narrative jumped around, and some parts did not cohere well into a storyline. While there were standout moments, the overall flow was hard to follow, and my attention wavered. The visuals were stunning, yet the character development and plot were notably weak. If I had known it was the first in a four-part series, I might have been more forgiving. However, it wasn't widely known that this was the first installment; the poster only indicated that the second part would release in August, with no reference to further sequels.

I just got home framing seeing the movie. I wanted to see what the buzz was on TH-cam about “Horizon”.
I really liked the movie and I’m looking forward to the other movies. I would second everything that you said in the episode.
Life was tough in the American West. I had just re-watched “A Million Ways To Die In The West”. That movie was a farce compared to this new movie. However, “Horizon” does have some of the same qualities as “Million Ways To Die” in dealing with the harshness of the West.
Kevin Costner does a great job of getting the most from his cast. He has always done a great job with his Native American actors but also with his non-Native actors.
Without opening credits, I found my self trying to remember names of actors throughout the film. Other than himself, Costner looks for character actors that he can get the most from in their performances.
    Looking forward to August now!

I found it to be a flawed film, but I do think there was a lot to like. I did enjoy the story for Costner’s character. I’ll be watching part two as well.

Everyone I spoke with after the showing I attended thought Costner has made a huge mistake. This movie was very slow and jumped around.
Was it a coincidence the best parts of the movie were with Kevin C?
I will see this again and hope that chapter 2 is significantly better (faster pace), or the series will lose this viewer.
