The thing to remember about the 4000 is that it was the first MPC designed to use instrument libraries. It's essentially an Akai rack-sampler with the MPC sequencer. That's where the added complexity comes from. The previous MPCs going back to the Roger Linn designs were phrase samplers meant primarily for drums, not multi-layered keyboard sounds. If you've used the Akai S-series or Z-series rack samplers, the MPC-4000 makes more sense.

My list of 4 MPCs I've ever owned are:
S) MPC 3000LE
A) MPC 4000 + AkSys
A) MPC 2000XL (Sold)
F) MPC 500 (Sold)

Yeah, It has worked out for a bunch of people. I must have gotten a bad batch twice. I run across others who had the same problem as me. I spoke with the guy I sent it into for repair and he said he gets more Live 2s than the other modern MPCs.
The Live 2 is my favorite of the modern MPCs. I've had a few of them. The only issue I've run into was with my retro edition. It had serious wifi connection issues that I could never figure out. I sold the retro and keep a black version. No issues with the black one thus far. Great rundown.

My favorite is the MPC key61.
3000 is my main work horse I've had the 60 , 60ii which I got brand from Oscar Peterson's studio engineer ,the 2000, 2000xl and 1000 . But I have to say the 3000 & 1000 are top tier .
It looks like we are the only people who would place the 1000 on the S Tier. I love it.

My first Mpc was the mpc touch then the one, Og live, 2500 and Key 37. Really want a 4000 white version
The 4000+ (that's the blue "Numark" one) has more storage and a few more added things as opposed to the original 4000.

@gabrieldonl2311 that's why it's called the MPC 4000+. It's the upgraded version of the original 4000. It was made in the "Numark" Akai era. Check the specs. I remember it very well.
I read somewhere that the white version was the plus and other places that the blue was the plus. I personally think it's the white. My blue one has some blank panels in the back that shows it's missing the 8 outs.

I have owned MPC Live2 from new for 4 years never experienced any issues with it
My collection of three MPCs make up the word SAD, lol. 3000, 200XL and 500. I've never felt the appeal of the 1000, maybe because those I know who had it back in the days didn't use it to make their best tracks, and they couldn't show me how to use my 500. Of the old school MPCs that I have used and know my tier list is:
S: 60 II, 3000
A: 2000XL, 60
B: 500
C: 2500, 1000, 2000
I've never used a 4000 or a 5000 or seen them in action live in the studio so I can't really judge for myself on those two. I could have put the 60 in top tier as well because i did see it used in the studios back in the early 90s, and those tracks were hits, but I saw the 60 II a lot more and for a longer time. The 500 is the first MPC that I learned to use to create beats on my own. I had used the 60 II, and I owned and used the 2000 with assistance but I didn't really understand them to use on my own.
Everyone has their individual opinions from experience what they prefer. I obviously like the pre visual wave MPCs and carefully chopping them by ear to the pads.
Thank you for doing this whole series with the different MPCs that you have collected. It's been an education for me, especially with the new ones.
Putting the 500 above the 1000 and 2500 is crazy work gang. It’s literally the same software with less functionality.
@@itsgoldn931 once you use a 60 and get used to it, using a 500 is like using a portable 60 or 3000. Less functionality than a 2000 upwards but same workflow as the Roger Linn MPCs. I don't really need the extra stuff as I use the MPC to control outboard gear with much better effects and the sound of my consoles. No disrespect to the 1000 and the 2500 and I understand why more functions in the box is appealing for most, but for me I prefer the simple workflow
I won't comment on the 500 over the 1000/2500, my take on the 1000/2000xl might be just as crazy. But the 60 II over the original? Why? Is this just preference to the plastic?
The 2000 classic has track mute, you highlight track on / off and press open window. And there’s your track mute 😊, oh by the way it should be on the A tier really 😊 hence no thumbs up from me 😂
It has track mutes but you can't record them. I agree with you about it's placement. Should easily be A tier for what it was when it was released.

The 4000 was the easiest MPC for me. I started with the 2000XL 24 years ago when I started high school. The 4000 was released 2 years later, and it was so easy for me to use at age 16.

@randilla my theory has always been "if you know how to use one MPC, then you know how to use them all." They are all the same. Don't let the appearance of the bigger model throw you off of your game. Don't over complicate it. Everything is still the same, and nothing has changed.
It has the same basic workflow. There are a few curve balls on it. The sampling is very different on the 4000 though.
@@ppic7162 I found the sampling much easier on the 4000 and 4000+. It came from the Akai Z series sampler engines.
Live series is the best. 5000 too buggy, 3000 too much for what it does, 60 too much work for so little, XL not bad I guess but why, 2000 Classic too flat and limited, 500 like a calculator, 1000 is great as is 2500 since it has usb for files, and I never had the 4000, which I don't think I'm missing anything compared to my Live. Fun video.
This is a great list. I have the 1000 and the 5000. That’s been a great combo for me. If you ever decide to sell the 5000 let me know, I might take it off your hands in a few months. I am looking for a back one to my main unit.
Thanks! My 5000 is not right. Everything works but and I added a DVD-Rom drive for $15. It acts very strange sometimes, but I don't use it enough to really get a good feel for it.
I only have the 60 and the 3000. All I need although I am itching for a 2500 and an X. I buy those after I get em royalty checks.

You left out some other differences between the 60 and 60II. The original 60 has an adjustable screen as well as an leather armrest.

My 1st was a blue 1000, upgraded the Pads & Pad Sensors. Traded it for a 2000. Then got a Live 2 which I traded to get a 1000 back. I think the 1000 is perfect overall and the 2000 can give me it's sound if I need it.
I have another member of the 1000 club. There only 3 of us so far.

I didn't know the MPC 4000 was so beloved out here in these MPC streets. I just can't get with it. The 4000 and the 5000 are my least favorite MPCs to use. But, to each his own.

I think you may have miss heard me. 1997 was the first "post" (after) Roger Linn MPC. I said the MPC 60 came out in 1988. I sung a whole dumb nursery rhyme about 1988.
My favorite is the 5000 which I have but how did you make your Akai MPC 3000 LED screen bigger with larger view?
I bought my 3000 that way. I did eventually purchase the larger view screen for the MPC 60 original from England on Reverb. The guy I bought it from is a real piece of work though. I haven't installed it yet.
I will just go with the X I got emulation that can do all those and more

It's an addiction. Be careful. After making this video, I've been using the 2500 exclusively. I never noticed how different that jog wheel is. I can't determine if it's just mine or if all of them are like that. It is different than the 1000.
@ppic7162 that might be my last mpc grab unless they come out with a newer model. But there must be something to that jog wheel but how's the audio converters with the 2500?

No way. The 1000 is slightly ahead of the 2000xl. The XL has a better sound, but the 1000 is easier to use and get along with. Especially for everyday use.
Really nice countertops!! Lol
My wife loves this. Who would even notice the countertops. I just need a white background. Some MPCs don't show wells against the wood floors. Getting those cost more than all these MPCs put together.

I sold my 1000 about 14 years ago also. I was using FL Studio then. I bought it back 2 years ago.

According to science, the original SP-1200 is the best MPC. Prove me wrong with logic.
My wife and kids purchased the Isla S2400 for me for Father's Day this year. I put off using it for 6 months. Once I learned it, this boy is great. The Workflow is very similar (in my opinion) to the MPC, it was easy to learn. It is a joy to use it. You may be on to something here. Especially if the Isla is really that similar to the SP-1200.

Get out. I didn't know that. I can't afford the original or the Rossum at this point. Even the Rossum cost more than what I paid for the 3000. I saw some of the reviews with both the Rossum, the Isla and the original and they said in sound and workflow they were all very similar. I should have bought that Sp 1200 back in 2015.
@@ppic7162 I rhink that my last response was deleted, but I basically recommended an SP-12. Some beleive that they sound even better than SP-1200s (slightly), but they're much less expensive.
The drawback is that they allow even less sample time, but people don't buy SPs to sample long 16 bar loops. They usually can be found for $1.5-3k.

Just personally if you can mange it, I would keep them all…not necessarily for resale but not many people in the world will have the full collection of MPC in working order! Another reason I would keep them is because one day some trust fund kid just discovering hip hop, with a whole lot of money will offer you $100k for that collection 😮 …..well maybe $50k

MPC 3000 hands down my favorite iconic machine (currently in the shop - a few of the line out jacks are cracked- oh by the way I’m the original owner of that 3000 - purchased it directly from Akai in 94’ at the time they told me I was the third person in the US to purchase the 3000🤔 ….I can’t verify that info but it’s cool if it’s true!
I own the 2000XL which in my opinion is very underrated in sound and thumb? Yeah it doesn’t POLICE knock like the 3000 but more like a jehovah witness knock on a Saturday. It accepts and saves WAV. Files..which is a plus if you have a usb to floppy drive on a PC. Lastly it’s built like tank!
I also own the original MPC60 which I love aesthetically and it’s in MInt. Condition but with only 26 seconds of sample time, no pad filters, only uses Double Density floppy drives, takes a lifetime to save and load files, it’s just not up to par with my current workflow! So it’s packed in my closet and will probably remain there forever lol
Just bought the 1000 this year and although I haven’t made a true beat yet I can tell I’m going to enjoy the workflow already- it’s upgraded with the JJ OS 3.73 ? More to come on that!
And I have a MPC One I share with my brother he has it at the moment I’ll grab it in a few months to mess around with it!
That’s my current collection the only other MPC I’ll consider is a like new condition MPC2500 in B/W color way!!!

Thanks! I think this may be my swan song FRFR. I have a video shot for the Isla S2400 and the MPC 3000. If I ever get around to editing them, I'll post them. If you run across the one of the trust fund kids let me know. I'll break you off a finders fee. I can agree with you on the 2000xl. I think the 1000 and 2500 does almost everything better(and easier). The 2000xl sounds better. The 60 runs out of sample memory really fast so I understand. I would like to know your opinion after you work on the one. I like it best out of all of the newer MPCs. Even the X SE.

Yeah I’ll certainly let you know my opinion on the MPC one - my brother wanted one but he’s more of a DJ than producer so he usually just plays with gear for a minute then gives it to me to teach him the tips and tricks lol.
