It’s rare to see an iconic inventor of such an iconic piece of gear like the legendary and still sought after MPC chopping it up with us in 2024. Flowers to Rog! He’s not even 70. This is the guy that invented 16 pads. 16 levels. Quantizing (I think. He called it timing correct.) And a bunch of other user friendly features.
True But he’d never do that.. he’s super chill.. i met him at namm.. he was showcasing that machine next to the MPC. When i read his badge I thought as like wait you’re thee Roger Linn. He was super nice. lol

This is great for people to see! I am glad that you have essentially patched things up with Akai and tried out a modern MPC. I did the reverse, and on this 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop, was finally able to experience an MPC 3000 LE. The sound and feeling of what you have created lives on to this day, and we are forever grateful. Thank you!
Warms my heart to see this both as a musician and an engineer that's had plenty of falling outs. You sir are an icon, a hero, and truly beautiful human being!!
Still use my MPC 60 MK1 every day of my life. With Roger Linn Designed Operating System. Nothing beats the immediacy and timing of the MPC60. It's the ultimate MIDI Production Center. Also own an MPC X, and while it is a very powerful and capable machine, it will never replace the original MPC in my workflow. Thanks for your awesome contributions to our world of music Mr Linn. Salute to you!
This was refreshing to see from the creator of the MPC. There has been much discussion about how the newer MPCs are inferior in regards to the sonic quality of the sound. You said what I have known for the past 10 years, they were forced to compete with software companies who were taking business away from standalone machines. Thank you for your time and insight Sir. Salute!
I bought my first MPC back in 1991, the 60ii, the floppy drive only crapped out last year, superb machine. A few years after '91 I bought a secondhand ASQ-10, just as a backup, still works fine, all be it a little battle scarred from lending it out over the years. Bought a 2000xl SE1 when they came out, another superb machine. I bought an MPC-1 a couple of years ago, just to have a DAW style sequencer, and transient chopping capabilities for breakbeats, without having to have a laptop in my "therapy cell" set up, I really liked it, - so.., I bought the MPC live2 earlier this year, just to have the bigger pads, and extra audio and midi outputs. tbh, the only effects I currently use within the new units are the Air Parametric EQ, Custom Distortion and the Grime Distortion, I prefer using external outboard for the compression, reverbs, delays, etc, - not that the onboard ones aren't usable, I just have a tried and tested method for getting my sound, besides I personally feel that trying to do everything in one box leads to a less 3 dimensional sound, - but that might just be me. - I'm no professional, just another idiot with enough money to spend on toys that fed my autistic need for sonic manipulation, just someone who worked hard and played hard, - but my whole life experience would have been so very different, without your amazing, original ideas. god bless you Roger
A king amongst men. You changed the lives of everyone who loved a record made on an MPC and really REALLY changed the lives of anyone that found an MPC when they needed one.
If it wasn’t for the MPC I probably wouldn’t be here.. my late father bought me my first mpc back in 1996.. and after a chequered youth and completely going off the rails.. the only thing I stuck at was the music.. now I am a music teacher (10yrs in) and have carved a career and life for myself… Thanks Mr Linn and thank you to my old man.

I remember trying the MPC 60 in 88 at Sam Ash when I was 16-17, using the 60, 60II and 3000 on several records throughout the 90s. My first personal MPC was the 2000, but it contained your sequencer design. I own the One Plus and I have to say that even with all the new features, it still maintains that classic workflow. Crazy cause I’m seeing this video because not long ago I thought of this year being the 30th anniversary of the MPC 3000. I also remembered me emailing Roger in 2014 being curious about the possibility of a 20th anniversary of the 3000 and he actually replied (which I was in awe) however his reply was direct, basically in short, he said to the degree of never again working with Akai. To see him even using and then reviewing a new MPC after his 3000 is great enough. I know we’d all love if a renewed relationship happen with Akai that’ll ignite a new Roger Linn designed MPC. Keeping my fingers crossed.🤞🏼 I’ve absolutely loved the MPC since my first time using a 3000 in 1996. Thank you Roger!!!

What a downright and genuinely good guy. Obviously an amazing mind but what a fantastic person. Thank you for everything you’ve done and will do in the future Mr Linn!!
Thank you for the development of the MPC. You have change the world with this thing. It's a shame how they tossed you to the side. But it's good they decided to give you both the CREDIT and RESPECT YOU DESERVE. What would be more respectful of Akai is to bring you back so you can help clean up and improve some of the OLD FASHION (or the dated) ways of programing and making music with the MPC. WE NEED IMPROVEMENT more than we need another variation of the MPC. You need to be commended for your forgiveness by doing this video. Glad to see that you at least landed on you feet without missing a beat!
Dear Mr. Linn, you are the reason I am making music today!! Simple and plain. I came up with the MPC 4000, which at the time had many more features added, especially the RAM and Harddrive Size. Only later in life, I realized that up to the MPC 3000 these MPCs sounded different. Your original machines still sound better than all of the new interpretations, which in my humble opinon is rooted in the different audio circuitry used. I would love to hear your take on curating the analog transformers, as well as any other parts that influenced the way these units actually sound. Also regarding the Tempest Drum Machine, which sounds superb. I am well aware, that up to the early 2000s manufacturers were trying to provide the cleanest possible signal with the lowest possible noise floor, while today manufacturers market their products as close to "vintage" as possible. Your machines have sparked discussions that are still happening today, with people like me trying to recreate the original sound with analog outboard devices like preamps etc. It think it is undeniable that to make your drums really sound like the 80s Prince Albums, you have to get the Linndrum. The same applies to all your other machines. They all have their own character. With the 4000 we were introduced to 960ppqn resolution instead of the original 96ppqn, which had a significant impact on the way Time Correct and Swing was applied. It drove me crazy, that I had to work so much harder to get a sweet groove, than on your original devices (which I had the opportunity to try). The z4 Samplers were very good, because well 24bit /96khz is cleaner by definition. Still, many of us have found ourselves intentionally degrading the signal post-processing to sound like your machines again. Like the 960ppqn the z4 made the MPC cleaner and more accurate, but also more sterile, lifeless and less colorful. I would actually turn off Time Correct completely and run it in 16bit on default and still not get close to what I wanted to hear. I believe Inmusic have succeeded in recreating most of the old algorithms. I agree that Time Correct and Swing are definetly very usable now. The workflow is great, yet the software is lacking many profeessional DAW applications, compared to most respectable software of today. All of that can be updated through computing at some point, but to recreate the "sound" I believe you need actual analog circuitry like Black Lion offer for example for modern AKAI Modifications. I would love to hear your take on these topics and how you would approach them, given the technological possibilities we have today. I believe I am not the only one who would love to see a Linndrum/MPC and Linnstrument hybrid with analog circuitry, bit depth and ppqn control giving us the original sound of the 80s and 90s back. Again, you are the reason for my quest for sound and why I make my living as an audio engineer today. I wish you all the success that you deserve with your new Instruments. Whatever you touch, will surely be groundbreaking!! All the best to you, Sir Linn!!
Awesome post. I have a MPC 4000 with the 8 outs. Thanks for your hard work in creating this monster. Any tips on getting that legendary swing? The sound itself is loud and clean. Very good sonics.
@@michaeltwiz8477 Thank you for your comment! Much appreciated! I felt like I owed this to Sir Linn. As for the 4000. First of all, don't sell it like I did!! It is a very capable machine, especially the built in filters. The sampler is superb for clean signals which really is not a bad thing, just not that old sound. But you can set it to 16bit. I forgot to mention that the crest factor of my MPC 4000 instrumentals is significantly higher than anything coming out the MPC X, which is because of the circuitry imo, causing the difference in perceived loudness. The most efficient workflow would be to Slave it to a current MPC via MTC and use it to sequence the whole project (with all the software and recall benefits of the new stuff) and use the analog outs of the 4000 to record them in real-time into the DAW. More work but also more Sound!! You can buy the MPC Studio for 200 bucks and easily set it to 96 ppqn, which gets you closer to the old feel. The Algorithm in there is pretty close to the old machines like I already said.
@@michaeltwiz8477 Not too sure that was the case. As I wrote in the post, I turned off TC completely, as I was ignorant to the fact that ppq had such an impact. I only realized that after selling the machine. Can't find the option in the online manual though. If you have that option you would probably be a bit closer to the old TC feel. Goldbaby used to have .rex files with the captured Time Feel of all the old machines from SP1200 to MPC3000. If you can still find them, you will see how different they are, even amongst the old Roger Linn machines. I believe Inmusic have used similar methods to emulate the old algorithm of one of the older machines. Probably the 3000. I would love to have all the machines side by side to do a scientific research. To get the absolute human feel, meaning record exactly what you played, run it in 960ppq like I did. You won't get closer to human than that. The 4000 is perfect for that. If you naturally have a Bernard Purdie Feel, you sure don't need TC ;)

He called it timing correct.)
And a bunch of other user friendly features.
Thank you, for making our world a better place
This man can walk into any hip hop and pop concert like yea I’m HIM! Move!!
Like a movie star 🌟 🤙🏽👌🏽😂
He's Lord!!!!! Like Anderson Paak say!!!
Robert Moog was just as humble and low-key but just as awesome.
True But he’d never do that.. he’s super chill.. i met him at namm.. he was showcasing that machine next to the MPC. When i read his badge I thought as like wait you’re thee Roger Linn. He was super nice. lol
@@ashead11 he can and all hiphop music should respect him period!
Nice groove.
The father of MPC on Father’s Day. Thank you Mr Linn.
The Live II is my favorite although not my most used MPC.
Mr. Linn in my humble opinion you are a rare personality. Beside your well-deserved community title as an industry legend, you continue to raise the bar for anyone brave and creative enough to establish their own name as a brand. This video alone is filled with so much integrity, dignity and decency. I could not be more appreciative of your willingness to release content like this. You sir are tremendously inspiring.
Roger Linn is one of the all time greats. Incredible that he's still seeing iterations of devices he pioneered almost 40 years ago
Thank you!
Thank you Roger 🙏🏼
Warms my heart to see this both as a musician and an engineer that's had plenty of falling outs. You sir are an icon, a hero, and truly beautiful human being!!
Preserve this man!!

Thanks for creating the original LinnDrum to begin with! So much joy has sprung from that ❤❤❤❤❤
Peace. Thank you for your contributions I am still using the 3000
3000 is a beast!!!!

I bought an MPC-1 a couple of years ago, just to have a DAW style sequencer, and transient chopping capabilities for breakbeats, without having to have a laptop in my "therapy cell" set up, I really liked it,
- so.., I bought the MPC live2 earlier this year, just to have the bigger pads, and extra audio and midi outputs.
tbh, the only effects I currently use within the new units are the Air Parametric EQ, Custom Distortion and the Grime Distortion, I prefer using external outboard for the compression, reverbs, delays, etc, - not that the onboard ones aren't usable, I just have a tried and tested method for getting my sound, besides I personally feel that trying to do everything in one box leads to a less 3 dimensional sound, - but that might just be me.
- I'm no professional, just another idiot with enough money to spend on toys that fed my autistic need for sonic manipulation, just someone who worked hard and played hard, - but my whole life experience would have been so very different, without your amazing, original ideas.
god bless you Roger
The mighty ASQ10!
(Does the ASQ predate Roger Linn's time with Akai?)
Roger Linn has always been very customer-centric and brilliantly designs with the musician's performance goals in mind.
A king amongst men. You changed the lives of everyone who loved a record made on an MPC and really REALLY changed the lives of anyone that found an MPC when they needed one.
This puts the Akai MPC back on everyone's radar screen. Fantastic video!
It's rare to come across geniuses who have inspired whole genres of music to be so down to earth and openly contactable as you. So I'm happy that I came across you, and a very happy owner of a Linnstrument. You've literally changed my life for the better
Thank you for the iconic designs of the original MPCs!
The creator of the MPC has spoken 💪🏿 So those who think the new MPC’s aren’t good, here is the man who created the ones you may like and gave the new ones the 👍🏿 Salute to you Mr Linn
Thanks Roger we owe you so much forever grateful king!🙏🏾✔️👏🏾🌹👊🏾
This makes me happy.
Thanks Mr. Linn for the best MPC review of all time. I hope you and Akai can work together again.
Happy fathers day. Mr Linn and this was a beautiful thing to see. THANK YOU for sharing.
It's real sweet that you're so humble when they did the wrong thing by you! I hope that evil dude that still owns Akai did more than just send you a free MPC Live. Your name should still be on it! Much love and respect to you Roger! I will always have a Linndrum and MPC60 in my studio
Roger, it's great to see you are still at it. It was a great honor to work with you on your products. I'm told you still go in to test.

Legend
Not only are you a genius who has surely enabled millions to make music, you also have a superbly mellifluous voice!
Glad Akai came to their senses by making things right with Mr Linn
I remember trying the MPC 60 in 88 at Sam Ash when I was 16-17, using the 60, 60II and 3000 on several records throughout the 90s. My first personal MPC was the 2000, but it contained your sequencer design. I own the One Plus and I have to say that even with all the new features, it still maintains that classic workflow. Even Reason having Block Mode helped me maintain the pattern based mindset for songwriting different sections. We really appreciate you and thank you for everything
I don’t know much about MPC’s or making music, but I couldn’t stop watching the video. The cadence of this man’s voice and his articulation is very therapeutic. Much respect.
Dude has always been chill like that, and always great on camera.
Thanks Roger. Also thanks for your generous help you offered my dear late friend, Rohan Mansell with his Vailixi MPC3000 OS optimisation. It was a pleasure seeing him work on that project and speak of you with such reverence. Great review and wonderful to see the man he spoke of. Best wishes from Perth Australia!✊

Oh in your post, I can feel everything you describe. Let's be honest and honorable! he will appreciate
Thank you Roger!!!
from an old guy who started with your lm1, and made too many records with the linndrum, you and bob moog let me make a lot of money with your cutting edge products. glad your still in the game.
Love my Tempest. All the best to you, Mr Linn. Legend!
Imagine being the man who made the most influential instrument since the guitar. Absolutely insane.
Mr. Linn, thanks for your contribution to music production. You are a true legend in every sense of the meaning!
Revived collaboration between Akai and Roger Linn? That would be so cool. ! Roger Linn is such a nice guy and a brilliant designer.

I will never get tired of saying this: you sir are a superstar and I used and learnt a lot with and from your designs. Thanks!
Thank you, Mr. Roger Linn, for the joy and innovation you've brought to music and culture. Respect.
Happy Father's day Roger Linn 🎉🎉

Glad to know the Godfather of the Akai Mpc approves of the MPC i currently own lol. Time for Akai to make it right with Mr Linn
Happy to see this Roger, for many reasons. You're a legend and a gentleman - sending you all the best!
This just warms my heart
The world needs you, your circuitry, and your converters, sir. And thank you all you've done for hiphop and contemporary pop culture 💯🙏🏿
@@strayesignal9312 I thought the sequencer resolution on the MPC 4000 could be set to different resolutions?
The Mpc 4000 is the only Mpc for me
@@michaeltwiz8477 Not too sure that was the case.
Thank you so much for this video, Roger! It was a blast to hear your thought on it, And about the original intention of the MPC design. You definitely were highly attendant to workflow and made the right choices! I'm glad to see that AKAI has continued that in their current line of products.
