Watching you spill the water sends me back to the very first video I ever watched of you, a few years ago where you knocked a glass jar of mayo on the floor and you said, 'Why is it always the mayo?' and Jesse said, 'Why is it always you?' 😂

In a world of instagram fakery and influencers renting ‘aesthetic’ apartments for content, seeing your real home and your real journey is so refreshing. Owning a home is such an achievement and I love seeing you do the place up! Thank you for sharing real life with us and not trying to portray anything different :)

pumpkins from UK and Ireland are too wet so they don't make the best pies. x a good pumpkin pie is quite nice x

You can get tinned pumpkin in larger U.K supermarkets, down the world food aisle. My husband loves all things American so I have been making pumpkin pies for him since we got together.

This year I used a Halloween pumpkin we never carved. Stabbed it and baked it whole. Had to cook it on the stove afterward to cook off a lot of the water. But when all was said and done it made an amazing pie. but yea canned pumpkin is the way I usually do it. It’s way easier.

Lots of Americans looove the marshmallow sweet potatoes. My family makes a savory sweet potato casserole with sour cream and cheddar cheese and garnished with green onion. My fave!

What does it taste like? I always thought it was quite strange and you couldn’t eat much of it since sweet potato is pretty heavy and filling. The savoury sweet potato casserole sounds delicious though, do you have a recipe maybe? Or specific sweet potatoes you use?

Grace I love how you couldn’t help but put roast potatoes and peas in there 😂❤
Usually my family usually adds more green beans to the mix and my MIL subs the marshmallow topping with brown sugared pecans and desiccated coconut. The crunch is next level.

There are two different main styles of sweet potato casserole, the one you made and then the other is topped with a brown sugar/cinnamon/pecan crumbly topping. The sugar caramelizes a bit as it's cooking. This is the version my family always made and I feel (lol) is superior. It generally has more spices than the marshmallow version. Pumpkin pie recipes also vary quite a bit - some are a lot sweeter (more like a sweet potato pie) and then others are mildly sweet and have a lot of spice (my preference). Since you weren't a fan of the consistency, I don't think you would like any version though. :)

As soon as you said pumpkin pie I thought “oh no, she’ll hate the texture” (from a texture-sensitive American haha). Not every household makes marshmallow sweet potato casserole, but it is VERY common nationwide 😬

I use canned pumpkin to make our pies.
My favorite pie is Pecan pie. So I usually make both.
On these two pies we always use whipped cream for our topping.
I also make a pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting that is usually a big hit.

  • @nellers31
    @nellers31 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Sally's baking blog has a lovely pumpkin pie recipe... Canned pumpkin was the way to go! And i think that pie was a touch overcooked which may have lent to the unfavorable texture. It should be like a custard, creamy but firm? The wobble will firm up while cooling.
Most people here in the States I know either have sweet potato casserole or candied yams. Essentially they are different versions of the same thing.
I love making a sweet potato pie (roast the potatoes, not boil!) with a graham cracker crust...top it with a bit of marshmallows after its been cooked then toast it a bit to get them gooey. Its super yummy!❤❤❤❤❤

My family makes the sweet potato topped with marshmallow monstrocity but I've always preferred my aunt's sweet potato and apple bake. She thinly slices peeled apples and sweet potato and mixes them with fall spices before layering them in a casserole dish. She tops this with lots of red wine caramelized onion. You can stop here OR you can add generous spoonfuls of goat cheese or some boursin cheese. Yum!

This was so fun to watch! Well done, Grace! I would happily dig in to that meal. :) Every family does it a bit different. My family usually has mashed potatoes, turkey, green bean casserole, rolls, stuffing, deviled eggs, cranberry sauce, and olives. In the past we've had mac and cheese as well. Of course, pumpkin pie for dessert (or for my brothers, a plate of whipped cream with a spoonful of pumpkin pie). Come the end of the night, everyone's in pajamas and passed out on the couch from eating way too much. Next day leftovers are always nice, though! Take care and happy holidays! Looking forward to Vlogmas.

And lots and lots of homemade turkey gravy. My family boils the giblets, (neck, heart, etc included with a whole turkey) with onion, celery, and sage, thyme, salt, pepper to cook/reduce to a rich broth to add to the roux made from the turkey drippings (the bird is basted with butter as it cooks). Makes a beautiful, rich, brown gravy. Yum!. And I seem to recall Grace is a gravy kinda gal.

Grace, you did will on your Thanksgiving meal. I couldn't quite figure out Jessie's Texas conversation. Jessie is correct that Sweet Potatoe Casserole is not typical liked by most America's.😖 I'm from Texas; born, raised and still reside there. Now, I'm African-American and I like Sweet Potatoe Pie (I like cold pies). The Cornbread Dressing and Gravy is my favorite. I call it dressing; because stuffing to me is made with stale bread. My family likes Candied Yams🍠 it's just sweet potatoes, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and butter (I like to squeeze ½ a orange🍊 in mine) (served warm). Also, some people's Biscuits are quite dense; but generally they're light and fluffy. I am so SO looking forward to all the Holidays upcoming vlogs. Happy Holidays!🎄🛍🦌🎁☃️❄🧣

OMG, Grace, you said heat the pumpkin pie and I yelled, "No!". I love that you went to the trouble to prepare Thanksgiving dinner. It is a lot of work. Some take 2 days to get it all done. The pumpkin pie, my favorite is very often made using Libby brand of canned pumpkin. I prefer just the pumpkin puree. Most people I know use THE RECIPE ON THE CAN. It is a custard of eggs, evaporated milk (Carnation brand), sugar. Pumpkin pie spice. I have gotten lazy and no longer buy jars of the individual spices. I usually add a little more spice than the recipe calls for. The spice makes the pie.You only mentioned adding brown sugar? I suspect you made an English squash pie. You may not like it anywsy, it's just that I am so fond of you I want you to have the best. Love to you. Mr. Grack, and all your family!

Super fun video, Grace... thank you! I agree with you on the pumpkin pie & sweet potato casserole. Constructive criticism (from a place of love, of course!): a mic could probably help with the sound on the viewers end. Like when you're out and about vlogging using a low voice or in the kitchen where there is a heavier ambient noise from the appliances.

sweet potato is def. an american thanksgiving dish but nuts are optional. We also do a sweet potato pie for "pudding". Its like a salty and sweet thing. Since we have so many nationalities here in america it def. depends on that too. Hispanics prefer a slow roasted pork, rice and pigeon peas a potato salad or macaroni salad and we also do a seafood salad. We also say Happy thanksgiving and we say a prayer before meals and optional going around and stating what we are thankful for.

  • @firstluv3rr

for me thanksgiving is so different being latina with puerto rican parents and family, we don't eat the usual traditional american thanksgiving dinners. the meat of preference is pernil, sometimes turkey then we have arroz con gandules. my mom makes sweet yams similar, to the sweet potato casserole and we usually have mac and cheese, some sort of pasta like lasagna or ziti, potato salad, and a few other foods i'm missing. its definitely quite different from the usual dinner yet its all i've ever known and is my usual thanksgiving.

Hi from sunny San Diego California. Yes most Americans use canned pumpkin. Sweet potato casserole is a very common dish for Thanksgiving, I think it’s just personal preference whether people have it or not. In my house we don’t like it so we don’t have it but it’s less a regional thing I’m very traditional.

Well done, Grace, your first Thanksgiving. One day try the sweet potato with pecan and brown sugar topping. It is less sweet, and has many spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, clove. Also, I have never seen anyone put mustard on turkey--guess it was good! The green bean casserole is often much less soupy, with just a hint of sauce and topped with (canned) fried onions. Not my favourite. Yes, yeast rolls are served. I am Canadian, but we share many of the same dishes with the States. You did a fine job! And wow, what wonderful products Aromatherapy sent you! Outstanding!

Looks like a great Thanksgiving! Different people liking different dishes is kind of a classic part of the holiday. My husband and I both have our traditional Thanksgiving dish requirements and there's zero overlap. Even my sister, who grew up in the same household I did, has different Thanksgiving can't-miss dishes (and must-avoid) dishes. I have come to accept corn and mashed potatoes as parts of the Thanksgiving meal, that mac and cheese is a great dish to fill the gaps in the plates of picky eaters, and that you should always make at least two types of pie. They have come to accept that I WILL be making sweet potatoes, cornbread dressing is better than stuffing made with bread, and cranberry mousse is a once a year delicacy. (A fancy name for jello with sour cream, cranberry sauce, crushed pineapple, and pecans--don't knock it til you try it.)
If you do this again next year, I wonder what you'd think of homemade cranberry sauce (super easy and delicious, Bon Appetit has a great recipe with cardamom pods and bay leaf), Southern style cornbread dressing, and pecan pie.
    Thanks for the video!

Great first try! These aren't the things my family usually has, in the southern US. This year my cousin smoked a whole pig and served it as chopped barbecue. There were about 50 people and everyone brings something. The sides brought were creamed corn, green bean casserole, chicken and dressing, sweet potato casserole (with the RIGHT TOPPINGS not marshmallows but a crisp topping made with pecans oats cinnamon butter and brown sugar), Brunswick stew, pineapple casserole, Watergate salad, rolls, ham and pinto beans, broccoli salad, hush puppies, cornbread, macaroni and cheese, Dorito chicken casserole, cranberry relish (raw cranberries, fresh orange, apples, and pecans all minced together with some added sugar), cranberry sauce, potato salad, greens, mashed potatoes and I think that was it for mains. For desserts there was German chocolate cake, cheesecake, brownies, cookies, chocolate eclair dessert, pecan pie, pumpkin pie, apple pie, chocolate pecan pie, and pumpkin cream cake. It's a really impressive spread but it's a big family and some friends as well. My cousin who hosts has a farm so there's plenty of room to gather indoors and out, although it was a bit chilly this year!

We also do pecan pie, but overall I would say this was a good attempt. You need some deviled eggs though! I will say I have NEVER had pumpkin pie with ice cream. Whipped cream only. I actually am not a fan of pumpkin pie myself. I think there are far better options to be fair so I don't blame you for not being entirely thrilled about it, lol.

Ironically, most of these recipes with processed ingredients are fairly modern, likely since the 1950s, and are also regional. I only really had green bean casserole and marshmallow on sweet potatoes when I visited friends' houses for the holidays. I think there is more flexibility in what Americans eat for holidays than what Brits expect for a roast dinner on Christmas dinner where roast potatoes or Yorkshire puddings have to be just so every year.

You did a LOVELY job, Grace! I don't like the sweet potatoes either. People have their favorites and say "no thanks" to the things they don't like. I tank up on turkey, corn bread dressing (a southern thing that involves a lot of eggs and cornbread [savory, NOT sweet] and it's baked in the oven and comes out so heavenly moist with sage and onions), gravygravygravy, cranberry sauce (or cranberry fluff: cranberries and sauce, Cool Whip [non-dairy whipped topping that is heaven if you don't get it there], pineapple tidbits, and chopped pecans, made the day before and is heavenly as well), white trash green bean casserole (I call it that because it is the 1970s version with the Campbell's condensed soup), rolls, and the olives that my mother always made sure we had enough of because a jar of Spanish manzanilla olives don't last when I'm near. Any kind of pie but pecan and mincemeat are my faves but you have to have a sliver of pumpkin pie at least or you've missed out on the full Thanksgiving experience if you don't.

My friend is Canadian and we did Canadian thanks giving and we tried the weird sweet potato marshmallow dish and I just do not understand it at all. So maybe a northern American thing?

Grace...a) I feel like a proud mum watching your videos. b) do you think it is because you are newly married and do not have a bed to yourself, is that causing sleep issues. c) you HAVE to go to holland and barrett and get htp5 it is fantastic. It will take a week to kick in but that and magnesium you will get up to 9 hours uninterupted sleep.... Also prayer is amazing "be anxious for nothing but in everything offer it up to God with prayer and supplication". THE END xoxoxoxo

Stuffing is the star of the show, and my hot take on pumpkin pie is if it is really so good why do you usually only eat it once a year 😜 Good job!

Great job! Personally, I despise pumpkin pie. I will not eat it. Family likes it kinda room temp with whipped cream. For me, it's candied sweet potatoes with brown sugar and butter! I don't care for the green bean casserole at all and opt for regular old veggies. Yeast rolls or cornbread as well.
