    I started with a single red crypt baby that came in a ziplock of salvinia I bought.
    That single crypt has turned into the centerpiece plant in all my tanks.
    Nothing better than free plants being made in your tanks.

    The tank is going to look stunning once the plants get going. I really like the simplicity of the crypts and natural stone and the Java moss was a lovely finishing touch. I’d be very happy if that was my set up

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge ! I am traing to start 5 gallon shrimp tank by following your method 💙

    Thank you for this. Have been looking to set up a small 5 gallon tank either for some cherry shrimp or a betta, started getting disheartened seeing how involved a lot of other set ups were. I prefer to keep things simple to start with and try different things as my knowledge expands.

    Love your shrimp videos my daughter is trying to set up and breed her own shrimp . I can't seem to find your video on how you set up your breeding rack with the plastic tubs .

      Hi. Unfortunately that rack pre-dates me making TH-cam videos. 🦐

      @FishKeepingAnswers ok no problem 😊 do you have a video on how to set up the tubs and acclimate them ?

      I've bought crypts a half dozen times and had them melt every time, in my frustration I always pulled out the roots and tossed them. I learned about crypt melt about a year ago so figured I'd give it one last chance, as with every other try the leaves melted immediately so I wasn't very optimistic but this time I had split the potted rootball properly and planted properly so I left the roots in the substrate this time and hoped for the best. Honestly gave up hope and forgot about them. After about 3 months I had first leaves and now every piece of crypt I had planted has sent up at least one leaf now! They are not mature or spreading but I'm very grateful to finally have had some success with a plant I've tried so many times!

    • @FishKeepingAnswers
      @FishKeepingAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad to hear it worked out in the end. Crypt melt is one of the most frustrating parts about keeping an otherwise amazing aquarium plant.

    such a great video. it's great for beginners and everyone getting into shrimp keeping. you're right, the setup can easily be done on a budget and doesn't need the highest and most expensive substrate and rimless tanks for cherry shrimp. Can't wait to see the progress of this aquarium!

    Thank you for making this video, especially in the current economic climate it has been a nightmare for hobby fishkeepers and even big chain stores for rising prices of electric and imports.
    But videos like these help keep people in the hobby that is taking a beating at the moment.
    Cheers!

    Nice video and tank setup Richard. I think it's important to note though for those that don't read the description that these setups are for neocaridina shrimp. Aquarium soil such as Fluval Stratum is specifically used to lower and buffer the pH and KH for soft water shrimp like caridina.

    Hi I am fairly new to the hobby and I saw small jar of eco tank with out filter heater or oxygen. And they manage to put some shrimp in there too ! Is it possible ? How about the PH GH KH and other things that needs to be measuring etc ... I want to do a neocarodina shrimp only eco small tank ? Any advice? Bearing in mind that shrimps are breed in variois water parameyers ... I havent had much success

    • @FishKeepingAnswers
      @FishKeepingAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. A jar is a bit too small for a long term shrimp tank, but you could certainly use something maybe 5-gallons or bigger.
      The first thing you need to know is what is your water like? Is it hard or soft? What is the pH? Once you know these answers, you can decide what type of shrimp will work best for you.
      I hope that helps. 👍🏻

    Nice video. I have to admit im one that spends a fortune. I have 2 that have cost me easily £2k each, a nano thats set me back around £800. Then my little cherry tank that has cost only £100. Big cost is plants really.

  • @Ragloves

    I don't quite understand how the water in the tank can keep cold that it kept condensing on the tank glass. Are you using a chiller or in an aircon room?

    Good to see you back! Thanks for video and looking forward to seeing it develop and see what fish you put in with your shrimp. I enjoy decorating my tanks with rocks - some I have bought but a lot of them are stones I have collected by the river! A good wash and a boil and they have served well. Slate is also easy to find and looks nice in an aquarium. I usually use the plants that don’t need to be planted - glued to rocks or wood makes it easy. No soil required! But see you are not using earth either. Keep up the great content! k

    I am not completely sure how large that tank is but I have around 300 blue dreams thriving in a 20L tank so I am going to guess a few hundred cherrys in that tank at least, depending on the type of fish.
    I felt your intro. I gave up on a particular aquascaping channel (not naming any names...) as their tanks looked great but spending 1000+ dollars on a 40L tank to keep a dozen neon tetras wasn't my idea of a good time.

    • @FishKeepingAnswers

      Sadly my budget doesn’t stretch as far as I would like it to. 😞
      About a year ago I watched a video by a famous aquascaper. It was labelled as ‘budget’, but I think he spent in the region of $1,200 😩😩😩

      @@FishKeepingAnswers I think I remember the video you are talking about and it being one that really turned me off.
      I do have a tank that cost me $5k in total but it is Juwel Vision 450L and in Australia, tanks themselves are stupid expensive ($3500 for the tank). Incidentally, in addition to the nearly $1k I spent on nanofish for that tank, I spent $40 on red cherry shrimp to see if they would do some clean up before they got eaten by the fish. 2 years later that tank has thousands of cherry shrimp, more fish than when I started and it inspired me to get 8 shrimp
      only tanks that I am doing selective breeding projects with and am now "the shrimp guy" to my friends.

    I breed my fire reds and rcs in outdoor tubs/ponds full of hornworts together with platys and swordtails. I don't feed them oftem but they are thriving with fallen leaves that fall on top of the tubs 😂

  • @lalystar4230
    @lalystar4230 ปีที่แล้ว

    With the crypt melt, I've heard several other youtubers use tricks like cutting off all the leaves before planting the crypt, this would of course prevent the melting and should promote new leaf growth. and it won't add to the bioload this way. Especially useful when getting in new plants from other palces where the water can be very different from yours.

    What light are you using, and do you intend to use a lid to reduce evaporation?

    • @FishKeepingAnswers
      @FishKeepingAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. The light is just a generic LED light from Amazon.com. I will be adding a glass lid to prevent evaporation and stop the fish from jumping out 👍🏻

    Hey I just had one small question for you, for my example of using my 10l tank for around 6 shrimp would there be a way to have it healthy and not have a filter? Simply because the design of the tank doesn't allow for a filter to be on it, I was thinking if I got one of those big syringes that have 200ml and then did a 400ml water change every day or something would that also work? I'd have java moss in the tank

    • @thedarkninja_
      @thedarkninja_ ปีที่แล้ว +1

      (reason I mentioned syringe is because as to not stress them)

    • @FishKeepingAnswers
      @FishKeepingAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. In my RCS breeding tanks I keep 400 to 600 shrimp with just an airstone and a large clump of Java Moss. I carry out weekly water changes of between 10% and 25% each week. 👍🏻

    • @FishKeepingAnswers
      @FishKeepingAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว

      Assuming we are taking Neocaridina shrimp, they won’t be stressed by a water change, providing the new water is close in parameters to the old water 😎

    if you have a planted tank you only need mechanical filtration biological filtration is through the plants and substrate.
