    I made one of these mistakes. I bought 12 on eBay for cheap, and one died after another. I bought another 6 from a local store (far better quality) and they're thriving! Very red and plenty of babies.

      I think the stress they endure from transport does it. I bought 12 bloody mary shrimps online and after about a month I lost 6. A lot less than when I bought them from my local shop. I feel shrimps bought from elsewhere and put in the tank don't live as long as shrimps bred in our tanks as there's no stress of that transport and being grown in our tank perimeters

    I've kept fish for decades but fairly new to shrimp keeping. I have a couple of Amanos and a bamboo shrimp that has to be at least three years old now in an established aquarium. Recently I bought some cherry shrimp and lost quite a few of them within days. Then last week I spotted some tiny babies and I already have another female with eggs, so they have obviously acclimatised to my water conditions.

    I've gone from having high quality neos in my tank to now using junk shrimp. They look more natural eventually and are great for fish tanks. I then built specific tanks for high-quality pure colour shrimp, these tanks are small and easy to store.

    May I ask do you clean your shrimp tanks? My tank is a 57 litre, in it I have 8 Amano, 4 red cherry, 2 blue cherry, 2 crystals, a bamboo and a lone Gary Lange Rainbow fish…he was an egg on some wood. It’s been set up and running for about 6/7 months now, I have a sponge filter in there, but the substrate does get dirty, and advice in cleaning, as I’m worried about the amount of water that would come out, I then have to replace. And they’re not breeding either. And I was wondering if that was why they wasn’t, down to me trying to clean the tank? Thank you❤

    Unfortunately, here in Texas where I live my pH is 10.6. I usually add some distilled water to it to bring it down to around 6-7 for my standard fish tank they are thriving amazingly. Unfortunately, my beta lived in a 3 gal. And just died from ick. I scrubbed and cleaned everything and let it to dry out in the sun and the tank has been sitting in my home for about a week. I plan on using this for my cherry shrimp. You suggest using 7 to 8 pH. I can definitely do that by adding the distilled water to the tank. Would it be possible for them to live in the 10.6 pH? Hard water is not fun to deal with when it comes to fish or anything else. Thank you kindly for putting out all your videos. I’ve been watching them back to back. You have quite a lot of information and I appreciate that so much. If you could respond to me regarding my question that would be great thanks again.

    I have a refugium 75 gal. Started with 6 different colored shrimp last August from a local store. Seeded with mud from a local pond and decomposing coffee, and mud and capped with a thin layer of sand. Yielded 3 types of water plant and assorted micro fauna. I feed the shrimp raw meat, chicken necks, quail liver, pheasant bones. Old vegetables. Yeast added to the tank every 3 days for the daphnia. The tank will disappear a chicken neck in about 10 days, a chicken heart in 5.
    I squeeze out all the filter media into the refugium (from 4 other large tanks). There is a plastic container in the refugium that I put duckweed and water lettuce from my other tanks as well. This decomposes and produces huge algae plumes (Which is the whole purpose)
    I have a 225 gallon tank that maintains Neolamprologus Lelupe, altolamprologus comprecciceps goldhead. and a colony of Tropheus Moori Firecracker red and a colony of guppies and 6 synodontis petricola.
    Every day I scoop out Algae and duckweed to feed the fish. It will contain, blackworms, snails and eggs, and shrimp!. Some of the shrimp survive in the 225, it is heavily planted and rocky. It was seeded the same way as the refugium.

      isn't it bad for water to keep dead meat for days?

    • @davidtaber2904
      @davidtaber2904 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@xValeTatt So not sure what that means bad for water. You need the microfauna (especially blackworms) If you look at any of the professional Daphnia farmers many use manure. If you have the right microfauna it will break down everything. The refugium is so packed with live plants you cannot see the other side. All these factors mean that it is breaking down any decaying material in very short order. I could not guess the amount of shrimp three or four hundred. Each female drops 30 to 50 every x number of weeks.
      Tropheus Moori are super sensitive to diet and water conditions malawi bloat and internal parasites.
      I am done with fighting nature and making the most sterile environment for fish. IMHO this results in fish with compromised immune system. Most of the fish in the hobby are bleached out shells in terms of their behavior, immunity and coloration. My fish do not sit and wait for food they work for their food every day.
      Tropheus Moori, A Compressiceps, L. Lelupe have different feeding requirements and it is recommended that they are not kept together. But they are found together in the wild and they are found together in my tanks. Check out Father Fish.

I never fully wash the tanks means I never fully clean the gravel. I only just change the water let's say 50 percent with aged water of course. Can I straight put the shrimp ? I had a 55g with dark high quality blue dreams, endler mutts, and assassin snails - the shrimp colony started at 6 and I started with 2 snails. The shrimp colony never stopped growing, even after 2 years when I had to shut down my tank, both invert populations had rocketed into the 100s and there were easily 50+ endler mutts, and that's while I had been selling babies from all 3 species as fast as I could. When I got rid of the substrate, there were 100s of assassin snails that had been chilling in the substrate (aqua solum humate, sand, and a bit of natural river gravel mixed in was good for them to burrow). There were no signs that the assassin snails predated on anything living, but whenever a guppy died, I just let it sink to the bottom and it would be completely consumed in 4-6 hours or less. I also purposely overfed the guppies because the assassin snails seemed to love the scraps. The tank was pretty planted up, so the shrimp didn't have any trouble finding a place to hide and eat

    I had to do a major water change in my FF tank because I blew a hole in the sand barrier, and it seeped out soil until I was able to get the hole filled. I went into panic mode and started siphoning the dark water out. I have a siphon that goes right outside my front door into the bushes. AFTER this was all said and done, my new water started a bloom right away. I saw my little neons stressing out and PANIC mode 2.0 set in. So, I ran around grabbing all the filter cartridges from my other tanks filters and pitchers of cycled water from my other tanks too, THEN grabbed my neon's and put them in a little 10-gallon emergency tank I keep going... for emergencies.... long story short... my water calmed down almost immediately, and my neons survived. I have other fish in that tank but my neons are little stress balls. All my other fish are fine. Because that tank has plants, I was wondering, are there certain plants that are stronger nitrite eaters than others? And can too many plants harm the water for the fish? And why would a bloom like that happen so sudden and go away just as quick? Thank you.

    • @FishKeepingAnswers
      @FishKeepingAnswers  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Wow! That’s a great comment. Thanks for sharing.
      To answer your questions in order, typically the faster a plant grows the more nitrates they absorb.
      No, I don’t believe you can have too many plants, although you could argue a tank rammed full of plants with no surface movement could lead to a fatal drop in oxygen levels overnight (but it’s unlikely you’d encounter that)
      And as for a bloom, tanks typically settle back down given time.
      I assume by the FF tanks you mean dirt capped with sand? These tanks are great (and I am a Father Fish fan) however problems like this can occur when the substrate is disturbed 😕

I have a highly planted tank with Amazon swords, anacharis, ludwigia, hornwort and crypts. I bought some frogbit and red root floaters to supplement the floaters I already had and a week later I noticed 2 bamboo shrimp and a rili shrimp (the red roots came from a store shrimp tank). My wife wanted shrimp for some time, but the bettas concerned me. After not seeing a problem I bought some yellow and cherry shrimp. Because it was fully cycled, has driftwood to shelter in and I overfed to make sure the frogs got enough food, they seem to be doing well a couple weeks in.

    Now I am confused, I put 10 Blue velvet neocaridina shrimp in my tank 12 month ago, They have been and still are breeding well, Lots of babys and females berried atm, My water parameters are always nearly the same even after water changes I do 30% per week, My PH is 6.2, GH is 8 KH is 3 water temp is 72deg. But now you say my water is more suitable for caridina not neos, I am at a loss,lol

    • @justjacque587

      No, your water is fine for Neos, they are very adaptable. Caradina will not survive in your water with high gh and any kh. Caradina need ph 5.5 -6.5 gh 5 and 0kh. Thay can not handle kh

    How to prevent nitrates buildup by overfeeding?

    • @FishKeepingAnswers
      @FishKeepingAnswers  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That depends how you mean by over feeding. It would only be classed as overfeeding if it were more food than they could eat. 👍🏻

    I’m successfully breeding pest snails in my shrimp tank 🥴But my cherry shrimp are still alive, only got them a few days ago. I put a bowl of expensive shrimp food in the tank, about 4-5 different brands and products…the only one eating it is the snails 😆 The shrimp look happy enough though, swimming around and knitting on all the surfaces, so I assume they are full on biofilm, and why they don’t care about the food I put in.

I am setting up my five gallon tank the past few weeks to get it well cycled and have ordered more red ones. I so hope they will make it. No one answers me do tetras eat my baby shrimp? Hi Richard, I am fairly new to shrimp keeping I just recently added 30 x skittle cherry shrimp to my Endler tank 10 gallon. My question to you is how do I know if my shrimp are eating well. How can i feed them directly so my endlers dont eat all their food? My tank is stacked with plants. I want to be successful in keeping my shrimp happy and healthy. Thanks

    • @FishKeepingAnswers
      @FishKeepingAnswers  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hi. It can be tricky to target feed when you have active fish like Endlers in the tank. You could try feeding the shrimp after lights out, or try feeding sinking wafers and floating food at the same time. The chaces are the Endlers will gravitate towards the floating food, and the ahrimp will naturally prefer the sinking food.
