It's this SHOCKINGLY Easy to Steal a Car!? Bye Bye My Focus RS

  • Prepare to be shocked by just how easily your pride and joy can be stolen by a relay attack! Car theft numbers are rising fast, and with my Focus RS parked on the driveway, we see a live demonstration of just how quickly a criminal can steal the car and drive it away. Scary isn't it?!
    There are now millions of cars being stolen per year via relay attacks whereby criminals get their hands on devices that can read and repeat the signal from your car's fob to enable keyless access. The key itself can be hundreds of metres away from the car, yet by this method the car can be instantly unlocked, started up, and driven off, and this is quite clearly a major problem.
    To demonstrate, we are joined by Henk van Vliet from KIWA SCM, the certification institute in the Netherlands, who are leading the charge against these kind of vehicle thefts. With demonstration equipment for the purpose you can immediate see how this is done, a process that affects everything from Ford Focuses and Fiestas, and VW Golfs, through your Mercedes AMGs, BMW Ms, Audi RS' and Range Rovers all the way up even to supercars if they feature keyless access fobs that don't have a prevention method to relay attacks.
    This is where Keyless Protector step in, offering products that will safe guard your keys through different techniques to prevent the car from being stolen so easily. With the system installed to the keys of the Audi SQ5 and then also to my Focus RS, we can see first hand the difference that it makes in preventing this attack.
    You can find out more about the Keyless Protector systems here keylessprotector.com and should you wish to acquire one, you can find your local dealer here: keylessprotector.com/dealers
    Thanks for watching, Tim

      A lot of Faraday pouches aren't made well enough to adequately attenuate the signal. Thieves now have boosters which can detect and amplify _incredibly_ weak signal levels. Cars have been stolen where the keys have been kept inside a pouch well inside the house.

  • @ma40
    @ma40 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Focus Mk3 is not only vulnerable to the relay attack, thieves can put the drivers window in, place a OBD key recoder into the OBD port and create a new key in seconds. As there is an alarm dead spot in that area, the alarm doesn’t usually sound.

  • @HlspwnsWorld
    @HlspwnsWorld 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    When the relay attack does not work, they break a window and disable the alarm, and reprogram a key using the OBD and drive off. So you also need a disc lock, and need to move or protect the OBD port. Protecting the key in a pouch or with that system is not enough.

    Very educational video! One of the flaws in preventing car theft are keyless fobs criminals can use a device to receive information from the fob itself to gain access to the car. This is why I prefer conventional keys over keyless fobs because they are simple and secure. Now that we watched the video, there is a solution to the weak problem that is a protector for keyless fobs so information from the keyfob cannot be picked up.

      Furthermore, so is the theft of the specific frequency or RFID ( forgive my ignorance of the technology used) of the fob achieved by a one-time proximity sweep of the fob by the cloning tool? Or can the cloning tool just be brought near the car only?

    Surprised it's taken you this long to do a video about this Tim, it's been a problem for at least four years. Also, even cars like the ST which don't have keyless are susceptible due to an essential part of the car's electronics running code from 2005. The modules were reverse-engineered by Eastern European criminals; OBD dongles are now availale which can easily disable the (Thatcham-accredited) Ford alarm via CANBUS, then put the security system into key learning mode to clone a new key. Exactly how mine was stolen, took about 60 seconds from popping the window to driving away. Many owners now have Ghosts fitted to suppress CANBUS attack. Also quite surprised you didn't recommend people buy a Disklok!
    Layered security is what we need now - make it too much of a hassle to steal a car, they'll go after someone else's. Sad state of affairs. The Keyless Protector is a clever invention, I remember being impressed by it when it launched, but wow it's expensive. Any chance you could do a promo with them for some money off?

    Keyless entry was always silly.
    It’s like when the introduced chip and pin on debit/credit card for safety but then thought contactless was a good idea. They’re going backwards security wise just to save you a negligible amount of time

    It’s great that solutions are out there to address this big problem. The sleep mode installed on the focus key is great, not keen on the slapping your pocket method though.
    New Range Rovers & X5’s have been the most common to be stolen by this method in my area.
    Surely the manufacturers are aware of this flaw, do they really value replacement sales more than protecting their customers vehicles 🧐

    Robust solution buuuut,
    The time should be configurable...
    3 minutes is enough for you to get inside your home and for a stalking thief to gain access, the user should be able to configure the time after which the key goes to sleep...
    or make the user have the ability to make the key go to sleep quickly...

    This seems like a great product overall, but I think a faraday pouches is ideal. Sure, you have to remember to put it in there, but it covers all angles. According to how Shmee said his key now works, if he was targeted by someone with a hidden relay device walking past him, wouldn't they be able to get a signal from the key as the key is in motion on him? This device doesn't seem to cover all angles, yet has a significantly higher price tag than a faraday pouch. I guess that is the price you pay for convenience. Its really only gonna be purchased by people with cars like the ones outside that store lol.
