  • This is the best option to removing a seized glowplug from a mercedes om606. The plugs had been lubricated every day for 365 days which did not help at all and they snapped off anyway. Heating the engine up also does not help in this situation unfortunatly.

    That is genius way to remove them. I started think it'd be easy, my engine still in the car. And i broke 3 but couldnt remove them then gave up and welded them shut. Now my om606 only has 3 working glow plugs.

    I've just done this on one glow plug on an om605. Couple of tips- be very gentle drilling the plug casing out to 7mm as it will want to bite and pull the drill in which could cause the drill to snap. Do it as luke says and drill away the 10.5mm threaded part first. Go straight in with a 10.5. working up to a 10.5 with smaller drills will just build in errors.
    I had to use a die grinder to get back on centre. Other than that it's pretty satisfying. The one I did took a lot of slide hammering. Felt like it was welded in.
    Also, the thread didn't release on mine when I got the plug out so I stuffed some tissue paper into the hole and picked some of the spiral of glow plug thread away then cleaned the rest out with a tap.

      If you use a stone to put negative rake on one side of your drill bit, it stops the drill bit snatching, same method for drilling brass

    Did mine with the engine hot and plenty of oil applied to the engine hot.
    I ran the engine to keep it hot and oiled the plugs. Slowly I removed them seized plugs but I put antizeee compound on the plugs before installing them. I used a reemer tool to clean the glow plug chamber because carbon build up kills glow plugs.
    inspecting my glowplugs every 40,000km pulling them out cleaning re-install.

    I've heard that much of these motors were assembled with "pride and precision" and fairly advanced techniques that very few of us would be lucky to match "at home," to include the installation of the cylinder head and the bearing clearances. With respect to the head, did the factory REALLY do such an amazing job to make it so that pulling the head, having everything properly cleaned and machined, and properly re-installing is still inferior to one that had never been apart?

    i only had 3 broken on mine but i drilled with a 10mm then tapped out the remaing threads. then i put it all togheter and drove untill they flew out of there. had to remove the manifold every time but it was really simple =)

    I haven't done it yet but I have read that if your engine is in the car, you can take it on a good hard drive to expand the aluminum head, while the glow plugs are steel so they should loosen in the threads so to speak.. Obviously this engine isn't in the car but who knows maybe this comment will help someone someday.

    That's very interesting. I had to remove one from a 1.7 Isuzu, and the probe on the end snapped off. With the head off I ended up having to drift it out into the swirl-chamber and cut the end off with a modified hacksaw blade 10mm at a time.

    Hi, good video, please can you clarify: at about 5 mins you say the glow plug thread is 10.1 (the vernier display actually shows 10.01) and you’re going to use a 10.5 mm drill; won’t this destroy the threads in the head? Thanks

    • @frankangermann6460
      @frankangermann6460 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The thread is M12x1.25 so u just drill out the core, the tread Itself stays, or should if u hit the center......

    Really sexy job indeed.
    Luckily my BMW M47N2 4 cylinder diesel actually has doggy glow plugs too but because it is a small engine it doesn't need them to work properly (as in 100%) it must be -20 degrees outside temperature to crank the engine 2 times more before it starts so no problem, keep them as they are. But to loosen up seized plugs a mixture of acetone & steering fluid (and time to drench it) should be ideal an expert once told me. And what if the plugs (the small point sticking through the pre combustion chamber) is largely increased in diameter due to the (heavy) carbon build up? You won't be able to pull it through I can imagine.
    Keep them coming these good videos.

  • @TheArcticWonder

    Have you ever tried heating the local area with a blowtorch to expand the threads? I don't know if it'd help but I'm curious if anyone has tried it

    Probably a repeat question but are you drilling just barely inside the thread on the glow plug and hopefully avoiding the thread on the head? Precision engineering with a battery drill and an eyeball😅🎉

    Been planning this for ages and was always concerned about potential for drill chips entering prechamber until you provided this visualization of the machining process. Question- Instead of slidehammer could a puller be fabricated and used that bases off outer cyl head surface? Great video

    Have a look at the Klann Tools KL-0369-300, it is a special tool for snapping off the electrodes to make drilling the glow plugs out easy.
    I have one and it saves a lot of time, especially with limited access.

    After fitting the new plugs would it be a good idea to remove and reinstall them every few years?
    This is a fantastic technique! Is it possible to do with the engine still in the car? Does the carbon get around the plugs because they aren't sealing properly?

    I am not understanding how do you still have a thread in the head for the new plug.
    I didn't see you make new threads in the head after you drilled out the original thread.
    Does the new plug go in deeper?
    Does that increase the compression in the pre chamber?
    Please respond, I need to do this ASAP.

    • @Barthoization
      @Barthoization 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My guess : The thread in the steel block is M12 x 1.5. The Glowplug is aluminium. First he drills with 7.5mm and taps M8. That's for his slide hammer to thread into. The 10.5 drill that he uses last drills away the aluminium of the glowplug, but not the threads from the block. Again, you need to be dead center for this. After the slide hammer you need to clean the threads in the block ofcourse.

      Barthoization the glowplugs are not aluminium.and you drill whit 6,8mm if you tap m8

    So, I'm impressed with the overall lesson but You showed drilling the centre of the 12mm thread to remove the old injector but you didn't show retapping the 12 mm thread that the new injector actually screws into......

      No you don’t need to Tap it after drilling because they will be there and few Clips will fall down by themselves, that’s if u aimed at correctly while drilling of the snapped glow old GP
      Good luck and don’t fear Because you won’t be creative because you’re in the state of fear.
      have confidence you can do it

    when you drill with 10.5mm you have to cut new thread for new glow plug?

    • @kermets
      @kermets 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes and what about the metal from the tap ? it stays in the cylinder

    • @aaronosullivan82
      @aaronosullivan82 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 10.5 drill bit leaves the head thread intact you end up pulling the glow plug thread out. It's like a heli coil. The metal stays in the glow plug as you don't drill out the end of the electrode. I've just done it today

      It's really difficult to get the head bolt torque as even as it was at the factory. On a long 6 cylinder engine the head gasket has a much harder job than a 4 cyl, or the 3 of a V6. Any differences in clamping force can lead to a head gasket leak :(
