    I've used snap on screwdrivers and sockets forever, they seem to me to be the best. Very good and calm instructions. As much rain as I've road thru, I would have used a little die electric grease on those wire sockets....worked on bikes with dead miss, and cut off at low speeds.....moisture impregnated plug wires...cut maybe 2 inches off, applied the grease then put boots back on. never missed or cut off again. Owner had changed coils, fuses and other stuff. Maysville Honda told him nothing was wrong with it.Glad I could fix it for him. They sure sold him parts he didn't need.

    Hi Rocco; Your old buddy from TX Jeff here. Wanted to give you an update. Reminder: 04 1300c. I put in new Keihin 200 main and new 58 pilot. Had AF at 1-3/4 turns and had 3 shims in needle area. I also put new petcock diaphragm in. Bike was running very well. But last time we talked you said "take out the shims!". I can tell you prior to any changes, I was getting 120 miles to a full tank, or 40 mpg. A week or so ago, I finally went through my first full tank since the changes, and realized, crap, now I'm down to about 30 mpg. (And this where the only changes affecting that was the one size bigger pilot and the 3 shims versus 1 shim. So I removed all the shims last week. The result is now it runs pretty rough at idle. I don't have to choke it with the bigger pilot, but if I give it little gas, I get a "Pfffft" air poof and a lot of grumbling and some popping. If I give it a chance to warm up thoroughly, a few minutes, and drive it a few miles and let it get plenty warmed up, it runs fine after that. I also found that upon retweaking the AF screw after about 15 miles of riding, that my setting is now around 0.5. I figured with no shims it would actually be a higher setting, so that surprised me. And, if I close the AF all the way the bike doesn't stall. And that tells me it's getting enough fuel with the 58 pilot to keep it going at low RPM in spite of the AF setting. I can't tell you how my gas mileage is yet. Haven't burned through the one re-filled tank yet. Any thoughts?

    Great set of videos Made it easy to do and less intimidating than some of the other videos I watched. Had to clean out the tank and wash etch and line the tank, all that crap in there made for some fun days in the garage. That gas valve siphon tube rusted out and broke inside the tank, never would have thought that in a lifetime. T was a big job cleaning the tank and all other parts but saved a boat load doing it myself. I was a forklift mech for a long time so just took my time. Got it running again. Leeson learned never leave gas even with stay-Bild in the tank, also is it better to run non ethanol gas so it won't gum up so bad. I bet this is the main job that comes to most shops in the spring. Thanks again. Wildman.

      Initial results were very positive. The primary jet was clogged with the old fuel. Wire reamed the ports and cleaned the entire carb.
      Was running lean for sure. Popping on deceleration.
      (Other sites were suggesting SCAR mod, shims, etc. Have you ever done this?)
      I backed out the A/F screw 2-1/2 turns, and it runs much better. Hope to get some time on it this weekend for further testing.

    Ok Rocco. Good news. Problem solve with my 04 1300c. It was for sure, a month ago, the pretty well hidden Pair Valve modification plugged vacuum line that popped off that was the culprit. It's tucked under the gas tank, under a frame central bar so you couldn't see it unless you really bent over and looked in the shadow. Sheesh. The open T connector was the hint that what's missing here? I think that famed ride for a mile when it went to heck was my correct assumption that something came loose in my putting tank on; taking tank off about 8 times and pulling carb down and putting it up about 10 times. Good rule of thumb after working on stuff like this is to inspect all lines for connection carefully. But that assumes you understand clearly how the bike works with the vacuum to begin with, which I didn't. And lastly, I had the idle screw turned way too far CCW and that's why it wouldn't idle. Two whole turns got it back to idling. Took it for a ride and tweaked the D screw with my new homemade flexible tool, and I think I'm good to ride again. I left the 3 shims the way they are for now. I may remove one or two if I notice that it's running too rich.

    You should run Seafoam in your gas a couple times during the riding season to keep the carb clean. I use it to treat my fuel over the winter months and never need to clean the carb. I've used it for 20 years now and never have carb issues with my engines anymore. It works, period.

    Hiya Rocco. Well you know all I went through with the 04 VTX 1300c with the 200/58 Keihin jets, AF screw set to 1.75 now, and I got it to one Needle jet shim. It's been running like a purring lion for weeks and very pleased with it's performance. And I replaced the petcock diaphragm. I throttle conservatively and don't usually drive but 30 to 65 mph around town. Safe to say on my last two full thanks of gas (3 gallons) my odometer hit 90 mpg at reserve point. So 30 mpg. I've talked with others with similar setup and bike to mine who tell me they are getting at least 40 mpg or better. I have to believe it's the enrichment that is causing the worse mileage. Mostly the bigger pilot. The AF screw has a turn more lean than months ago. It's puzzling as I feel I'm in the minority getting such poor mileage. Any thoughts?

    • @cranstjs
      @cranstjs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. I can only assume the blend of main/pilot (now larger)/and shim to compensate for hypercharger and big shot pipes are rich enough that they are spraying a good percentage of gas. Unless there's some sort of internal sneak path going on. Another guy with a similar setup is saying he's getting similar MPG now. I have a feeling these mods (done prior to my buying it) is subject to a toll in excessive gas usage in return for a louder sound and a handful more HP with hypercharger and big pipe look. Unfortunately, owning the bike used means I can't compare to the original stock everything and MPG. Never drove a stock VTX before. What's frustrating is when others with similar mods are quoting 25% better MPG. What are they doing differently? I think my life is surrounded with puzzles.

    Hello sir
    Thank you so much for spending the time to create such an awesome video.
    I Would like to ask you a few questions
    Got a 07 vtx 1300C was garaged for 5 years. I de-rusted the tank, changed oil, replaced the spark plugs, new petcock, completely disassembled the carb, which was full of gunk. Spotless afterwards and turn the A/F screw to 1- 1/2. Bike runs ok but the chock needs to be at half way through. If I push it in all the way, it turns off.
    Please let me know what else can be done so I won’t need to use the chock to make it idle properly.
    I appreciate your time.

    • @TwoWheelRocco
      @TwoWheelRocco  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes it takes more than one time to cleaning the small starter jet and circuit , That idle circuit has some debris in it. As long as your tank and screen and Petcock are in good working order. Did you test your petcock with a vacuum pump. Same test as your Honda th-cam.com/video/7Fo9Q93OJXI/w-d-xo.html. If you have any questions just ask. Thank you for your Sub. Let us know how this works out. Ride safe and have a great day.

      Two Wheel Rocco hello sir, petcock is brand new. The old one was leaking pretty bad. I did not test it the you did on the Harley, but what I did instead, I unhooked the fuel supply hose from the petcock and let the vacuum line contacted. It was pumping gas from the tank just fine so I assume it is working fine. I still think my problem is the pilot screw.

    Rocco, I'm not positive, but I may have screwed up my choke? When I start with the knob pulled OUT on a coldstart, it won't start at all. I have to push the choke knob IN to start it. That seems opposite to what I thought. Also, the tach reads about 650 when it first starts, and giving it throttle too quickly will stall it. It takes about 5-10 minutes of warm-up for the RPMs to gradually increase to 950.

    Awesome video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skill. I just bought an 06 vtx 1300 with 30k miles. It idles fairly smooth although a little high, but it was cutting out at roughly 2k to 3k rpms cruising down the road. I threw some plugs in it and followed your steps on cleaning up the carb and the jets and adjusted the idle down. After I got it all back together it ran great for a few minutes then it died and wouldn't start. So I took it all back apart to double check that everything was right and it is, but still no start. I ended up running the bat dead so I gave up for the night. Any insight would be much appreciated.

    Two wheel Rocco, thanks for putting all your vidoes up. They are amazingly helpful. I followed the carb cleaning videos and got my new to me bike running very well after it had been sitting for about 4 years. I put new spark plugs in as well. I am having a bit of an issue however and was hoping for your help. The bike idles great, and runs great when not full gas. It bogs down when I give it a lot of throttle, say when I am attempting to pass someone on a highway, or even just giving it ump before shifting. Do you believe this is an A/F adjustment, or something else. I have very gradually (1/8th turn at a time) opened up the A/F adjustment and so far have not been successful. Probably close to 3/4 turn CCW from initial setting you recommended in your video. The A/F has an aftermarket extension which allows me to adjust without taking anything apart. The bike was jetted, has aftermarket pipes, has aftermarket air intake and had pair system removed or blocked or whatever. Again, the bike runs great and sounds, idles smooth. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.

    This was an excellent video. I own two VTX 1300's and have done most of the things that you showed except clean carb jets and adjust fuel /air mixture. Basically I have no experience in this area. They both run well EXCEPT one of the bikes came with Vance Hinds pipes. Every 1000 miles I have to remove the spark plugs and clean them because they are carbon fouled . Even with the carbon fouled plugs, the bike runs well. I have tried various carb cleaners in the tank and changed the air filter. One problem is I can't tell if the carbs were rejetted when the exhaust pipes were changed from stock to Vance Hinds. How can I tell if the carb has the correct jets?

It sounds like something is hitting something else when it turns off. But it's been doing it for years, and every VTX 1300 all sound the same when they turn off. Hi Rocco, You're the BEST school and I truly thank you for all the knowledge you provide through your videos.
    I recently picked-up a 2007 Honda VTX 1300 with 12000 original miles from a second owner. I'm a new rider and this is my first carb motorcycle. The bike runs fine with the choke slightly pulled out but it shuts off without it. It does starts with the choke closed but when I roll the throttle it dies. Bike only works when the choke is pulled out about half an inch or so. The owner told me that the carb was cleaned and the spark plugs, air filter was replaced last year. I noticed a metal cable with a knob running from the carb area down to the idle adjust knob on the right side of the motorcycle. Upon asking what that is for the owner said it controls the air/fuel mix not sure if the screw was broken or missing. Please advise where should I start from to fix this problem? I took the bike on the FWY and it runs strong and shifts smoothly. I'm not mechanically inclined much but willing to learn due to your videos.
    Thank you

    Hi again Rocco. So here is what I was doing with my 04 VTX 1300c tune up. New plugs, New jets in carb, stock size. 195/55.
    Verified Scar mod with 1 - .028 shim (which is sort of like 1.5 shims considering .020 thickness nominal for a shim). Now messing with D adjustment rich/lean with air cleaner removed.
    First off, I tried it at 2 turns. Not so good. Put it at 1.5 turns, couldn't keep engine running except choked, runs a bit rough at 2.5 turns (richer) but I had to up the idle a bit. Ultimately I had to turn it to 2-3/4 to get it to enough richness to run ok.
    My problem, in spite of following this slew of suggestions about how to best adjust it to get rid of backfiring and/or popping out the pipe or the hypercharger, the adjustments were not successful and it still has these issues.
    I also put regular nuts on front pipe (instead of cap nuts) flange to seal it better. Had a slight air leak at head.
    Now there are people on the Facebook VTX modification group telling me I need much larger jets, like 220/60. That sounds terribly big to me.
    Here is what the bike had done 10 years ago by prior owner. And he too reported similar popping/backfiring in spite of pro work done to it:
    Pipes changed to louder Vance and Hines type
    Air cleaner changed to a K&N Hypercharger
    Valve pairing (or Desmog). Removes air porting to exhaust pipes for emissions burn off) Caps off air port and theoretically helps with deceleration backfiring.
    Jets theoretically changed to accommodate bigger pipes and air cleaner. 200 main instead of 195
    Scar mod: 1.5 shims but neglected to cut tit off plastic piece. I did that.
    Theoretically, the prior owner had it Dynoed, which meant it should have been tuned correctly, no?

    • @TwoWheelRocco
      @TwoWheelRocco  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds to me you need bigger jets...More fuel.. less air= less popping...Your A/F screw will start to make a difrance At 1 1/2 to 2 turns out...When you have the right size jets in play...Hope this helps...Let me know how this works out.

    • @cranstjs
      @cranstjs 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I went ahead and ordered a 58 and a 60 pilot jet, since I figure these problems all focus on the 0 to 2000 area (popping/backfiring on decel) along with fine tuning the D lean/rich screw. Bigger pilot jet also allows for fewer turns on D setting. (many more days of research). Thanks again. I'll let you know how it went when the jets are in and I've fine tuned the D screw.

      @TwoWheelRocco  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @cranstjs

      Thanks again Rocco. As an amateur home type mechanic, I try as hard as I can to accumulate 10 years of community knowledge and professional knowledge, such as yours to glue together what I think shouldn't be such a terribly complex picture for one bike and one carburetor. Good grief. There is one thread that posts all the jets and settings that many have successfully done on their VTX 1300 and you would be hard pressed to find two that are the same. If you look at this link and post 9 (link at bottom), this is what convinced me to stop focusing so much on the Main and steer more toward the low RPM due to the backfiring problems. But a second visit echoes what you are saying (see post #9) on the link, that you need at least 2 Main jet sizes bigger. Ergo, 205. There was a 200 in it when I tore it apart initially, that I was riding on for 10 years. Oh, one other thing, I bought some Irridium NGK plugs that are one step colder than OEM, per another persons suggestion. (He actually went two steps colder). More reading about plugs states with the colder plugs you need a bit leaner mix to compensate. So I have that in mind too. Besides getting the carb mix right, I'm trying to get the plugs to look healthy in harmony with the mix.

      Also, to further confuse the issue, and since I was attempting to stay true to the original manufacturer of the Honda using only Keihin OEM Jets, I am now frustrated to see that the biggest jet the -393 style goes to is a 200. Add to that the confusion between one mfgs jets and another (crazy). Thoughts?
      www.jetsrus.com/a_jets_by_carburetor_type/jets_keihin_99101-393_main_round_28-xxx.htm

Now when I use the choke its revving way high ,and when I push the choke back in it goes down a bit ,then gets high again when fully back in. Cant get the rpms down at idle. I have the idle screw backed off fully. Still too high.Carb clogged ?

I get a very infrequent POP in my stock exhaust on decel, and I'm thinking maybe a cracked vacuum line somewhere in there. What would your gut tell you?

    Rocco; What would cause on VTX 1300, if petcock is off for a day and it''s parked the float bowl and I guess fuel hose to be empty? In other words, I have to turn on petcock to get fuel. If not, it won't start at all. A leak in the carb bowl somewhere siphoning gas? (no external leaks)

      I read more into the service manual and found that the article I showed you to adjust the tang for the float was a generic one. But the VTX does not have that tang and is not adjustable. If the level measurement as spec'ed is wrong, all you can do is replace parts. Others told me they can leave their bike parked for a day or two with petcock off and they can start it and it will run for minutes. In other words their float bowl is not draining. I'm simply not expert enough to dig into the minutia of the carburetor to understand where there might be some sneak path of leakage. But I have to believe this is somehow tied to my crappy miles per gallon. I put a new Enricher spring in to ensure that was closed all the way as well and doesn't supply yet another path for dumping gas when I don't want it to. My kingdom for a fuel injected 1800. Never thought I'd still be dealing with carburetor. lol I probably could have saved a lot of time and money and just bought a brand new one and swapped out the jets and be done with it.

I have had my gas tank off, there is no vacuum to the peacock, I don't even see where a vacuum line would go. and last but not least, are the jets marked some how? how do i know if it is 190 or 195? and so on. thanks for the speedy reply and help. and the needle is not stock, it looks like a dyno jet needle, has multiple slots for adjustment.

      ...OEM Jets are stamped with number on top...and it sounds like baffle are in place..did you look at petcock and screen in tank....Very common for old tanks to be dirty and rusted...Witch cause bad running bike...how many miles? Sounds like after market petcock....Which tell me tank was a problem at one time..Need to have clean fuel...Let me know how that work out...

    I just bought an 06' VTX1300R couple months ago. If I apply the choke it will start but if I push in too fast it dies then will not start back. Almost like it's flooded.. Is this a carb issue or something different. Any help is appreciated.

      Happy to help. How does this motorcycle idle when she is warmed up? I would try to start it with the air filter removed sounds like it's dirty. Make sure you do not have too much oil in the motor. Halfway on the dipstick Thank you for watching and your sub Jonathan. Ride safe and have a great day.

      It runs fine when it's warmed up. That's why it's had me so confused. If it starts up and gets warm it will be fine rest of the day. But if it starts when cold and shuts off, it will not start back. I tried for 2 days then it miraculously decided to start and ran fine for a few days. Then today same thing. I did look at the air filter and it's pretty dirty. I've got one on order. I'll check the oil in the morning and try starting with filter removed also. Thanks so much for quick reply.

      @@jonathancreech5861 that's an indication of too much oil in the motor. Very big problem with the glass window for the oil check. Make sure it's at the halfway point. Most bikes have problems with too much oil that's why I asked if the oil filter was dirty with oil. Clean remove oil and make sure it's only halfway in that glass window. Ride safe and have a great day makes a big deal.

    • @TwoWheelRocco
      @TwoWheelRocco  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it can be....Without those curve pliers...Do the small one first from left side of air box then the big one.from the right side of air box....With your curved pliers... grab hose 1 inch in on hose and push on...little oil on hose will help..So hows the VTX run? Next time it will be easier..
