Politicians are actively trying to remove direct ballot initiatives right now, and I hope everyone speaks up to put a stop to it, because stuff like this will never work if they can remove our say in our own government
Yup. Or if a direct initiative does pass, the politicians do everything in their power to delay/stonewall implementing it. They did a DBI in Nebraska to force the government to implement ACA medicaid expansion (even people against it were like "well, we are stuck with it anyways, may as well get the federal govt to pick up some of the tab"). The government handed it over to a sweetheart contractor who has spent two years and millions of dollars "developing the software". They "just can't implement it" until that is done.
I've gone to a few youtuber channels trying to encourage people to look at this video. It's not much but I'm trying my best to help Louis and everyone who wants to continue to repair their devices, and have access to the parts/information needed to do so.

I can’t help but think of the massive following that all the “restoration” videos have created. These are all people that love and appreciate repairing. He needs to tap into that somehow. Agreed that we need to join forces.
An indie one, if it hits Netflix or becomes that widely known it will be nothing but a self patting on the back wankery with corporations and people who had nothing to do with it. (looking at you, "Don't f**k with cats")
Play their own game against them. "If we can't repair our equipment, that means our equipment is disposable and that leads to e-waste, which negatively impacts the planet in these ways". That's literally the ONLY way you can talk to these people. Show them clips of Agbogbloshie and tell them that these practices that we are doing will just lead to more situations like that, which is an absolute humanitarian crisis. There are kids out burning plastics and inhaling the chemicals just so they can sell some copper for like a couple bucks a day. e-waste is an actual issue that NEEDS to be addressed asap, and right to repair could be the tip of the spear to finally change something about the e-waste situation all across the globe that we just blissfully ignore here in the west.
Why would they care though? As long as the stuff is getting dumped in someone else's backyard. Even if it were local they'd probably not care if it was poor people being harmed.
@@1337GameDev unfortunately, that won’t work either, because they know about that. That’s the actual intention. What they should do is argue “by refusing the right to repair to the consumer, you encourage not their use of your services, but instead the patronage of your competitors and the use of illegal and facetious services.” Make it an issue of profit. That’s the only way to get through to the Americans in power.
They don't actually give a fuck about the environment, they pass their laws based upon who is funneling them the most money under the table. And if you think they'll overturn "their" laws based off of e-waste hurting the environment, you're wrong again because politicians (liberals, more than anyone else) are riddled with hypocrisy in every single direction- which, surprise, they don't give a fuck about either.
Theyll just have some return to manufacturer for recycling option most people dont know about or cant be bothered to use to point at. Theyll take that option over right to repair in a blink.

Don't say you haven't moved forward with Right to Repair. Before this channel, I had no clue this was a thing, now im watching these videos from you and others and calling my local reps.
there is a world wide "right to repair" discussion - EU has implemented one version Australia is "looking into it" IMHO right to repair 10 years ago was an" assumed given" and that is how they took it away
The fact a government representative explicitly said they have not logged into their email since they took office shows they are incredibly negligent of their position. I am in full support of this movement
@@JudaZuk_ I agree, there are many people who think you can just turn on solar panels and be done. They don't look into how e waste is a huge problem, and often these precious metals we put into electric cars and solar panels aren't easy to recycle or recover without more emissions to power the process, or more emissions to mine definitely in favor of clean energy, but god I hate extremists. almost worse than lobbyists
@@wade2112 - totally agree, extremists of any kind is always the worst .. Also a big fan of green energy, but it needs to be implemented with a plan to work .. we are right now rushing out electric cars, that use lithium ion battery technology... completely ignoring what it takes to mine lithium f.ex. Even though hydrogen driven cars is a much better option, it is barely considered. We build lots of large wind farms, but there is little to no plan what to do with these when they need to be retired and recycled.. an average wind turbine can last about 20 years... but are usually replaced within 10 years because they are no longer effective, same with solar panels as you mentioned .. what do we do with them then ? I for example think nuclear power is still a viable option, at least for the moment, if we really care about lowering emissions, but for some reason it is not even allowed to be an option in any shape or form 🤷♂️
If any of you bought bitcoin or tesla when it was $50, don't delay, help pass right to repair today! All that's needed is $20,000,000. Hit me up louis@rossmanngroup.com In all seriousness, this is one of those things where I feel like everything I've done in life, every zig & zag brought me here for a reason. and to sit it out would be a waste of my existence. People are fed up with how things are, now more than ever. The time is now. How should I move forward with this, without $20M? I know when I'm 75 I will endlessly kick myself for making the wrong decision at this point. But I don't know what that is. Is the wrong decision trying a direct ballot initiative without the money? Or is it not trying at all?
Honestly, I would do the fundraising and see if you can in theory get 20million dollars to back right to repair, I know it may not look it but I'm sure there are some companies some politicians, and other individuals that would be willing to support this and you in this way. tell them about your videos and how you need to do it the other way to succeed, because one success will create more pr for the next and the next just look at states that legalized marijuana..

I like this idea. In a way it is all kind of under the rubric of ownership. Basically these people are trying to sell you a device but then claim you don't have full sovereignty over it and you can only go through them to make changes and maintain it.
Yes. This biz model is now everywhere, a new version of Medieval feudalism with poor farm workers being in the vast majority, and who had zero power over anything. In ca 1900, in the US, the second most populous work (career) was to be a domestic servant. The first was to be an agricultural worker. In 1900 the overlords mostly treated their workers as if of the same species (human beings) even if sometimes with contempt or pity. Increasingly overlords don’t “see” the billions of people radically poor (not sure whether they will be able to feed their children, or not for more than the current month or week), as if they either no longer exist (in one sense not “seeing” other humans at all; blocking them out, refusing to look), OR as useful objects that will become flotsam and jetsam. Those with wealth AND health generally are doing “work” but they have a high degree of control over what they do. I’ve been fortunate to have meaningful, well-paid work despite not being a billionaire myself. One only needs so much material wealth for happiness (and the very rich can get heartbroken in ways money cannot fix, nor by giving it all away). One DOES need enough material wealth not to feel constantly insecure for one’s life and worst of all for helpless humans dependent on you to provide basics like sufficient food, CLEAN water, and shelter. That SO MANY people living on every continent except Antarctica face the bad end of this bell curve (growing inequality) should be shocking, and seen as obscene. We are mostly accepting it, with time. We “should” stop, whether from moral concerns, “brotherhood,” or perhaps even shrewd self-interest. The last item I listed may no longer apply; if that’s true then the human species is a failure ... I do hope it is not. Like Elon Musk (in the following way at least), I grow up wondering what our species’s FUTURE would be a billion or two billion years from now (escaping earth ir living earth before our sun engulfs this planet, so far in the future). We won’t last that long (not even a few thousand of us) if we don’t fix this problem, which begins with SEEING IT as one. Perhaps I’m sharing pointlessly. I studiously avoid speaking online ordinarily. There is usually (not always!) no point engaging. No one deeply engages with one another, they just make a quick riposte or meme (possibly hoping for a “like” but not seeking a conversation). Louis’s comments section is extraordinary in its deviation from that “norm.” I am replying to a reply to a comment and it’s not possible for anyone to engage with my prolix comment. So it’ll go into the ether unless one if you ever looks back to see engagement that led YOU to write something here.
I think the best way without a million budget is, as already mentioned in the comments, to contact all the Tech TH-camrs but also others and to get started together with the community. Enough people should be actively made aware of this. Because it is not only an important topic for technology enthusiasts.
In europe, the youtubers have done the new copyright law in europe with article 13, which is a total failure. Basically it worked to get tens of thousands of people moving. However, it would not be Europe if our "great" politicians had once again only listened to the industrial representatives. Now we get upload filters and, as everyone knows, they work excelent. :)
@@jasonriddell Not a bad idea but engineers/makers or basically creating stuff in general, might be a larger market for them than repair is, on the other hand I don't know, repair shops could likely go through consumable items like flux and tips faster than anyone else.

As others have said, the problem in advertising right to repair on TH-cam, even if you involve other tech channels, is that you're advertising to people who are already in favour of right to repair. It's the other people that you need to convince, the grandma who never used Internet before, the mum and dad that think that playing videogame lead to violence etc... The people who are mow influenced by the mainstream media. That means that you cannot keep your advertisement online because it will never reach them, so they will only see the ads that you showed in the video, without having the other side of the story. So you need billboards, make events, and have the news cover your story in a positive way. Otherwise you will fail, no doubts about it. You cannot win a majority vote if most of the people don't even know about the problem in the first place.
I disagree, you may be able to channel the change through some youth to convince their parents, but that number will be extremely lower than the number of older people that will see ads campaigning against right to repair. If you wanna play the game you have to use the strategies that have been proven to work, one of these is event and media coverage.
I agree that he should do both. But in the video Luis didn't seem to keen on doing the "traditional" advertising. Which is, in my personal opinion, a must if he wants to win the vote.
You've got balls dude. If anyone's got the insanity (and I mean this in a good way) to really push this forward, I think it's you and your supporters. We've seen what the internet can do when things go viral, like the area 51 raid or gamestop, we just need to figure out the secret sauce that makes it happen

I came across your channel maybe a month ago. One of your board repair videos just randomly popped up on my feed. I know absolute dog shit about board repair, I’ve never repaired my own laptop, I haven’t even been interested in doing so. Yet somehow, your board repair video came up on my feed and for some reason I binged the rest of your channel. I never realized how important it was to have the right to repair your appliances, and your videos have truly convinced me that this is an important cause. Maybe it’s going slow, but I think what you’ve been doing for your cause has been working. I think you can do it. It’ll just take a minute. If there’s any place I can donate to aid in your cause I’ll do it in a heartbeat! It won’t be much, but it’ll be something. Thank you for all your work and your dedication! I believe in you!
Louis I live in Ireland but, purely because of your videos, I contacted a family I know in Boston about the vote in Mass and discussed the issue with them. I think informing your following on social media has an impact for sure. Keep it up.
I think the distributors for electronic components (e.g. Digikey, Mouser, RS components) are a bit similar to those autoparts distributors. If you can convenience thoese companies that once the bill passed, there will be many many more people purchase electronic parts and tools from them.
Benificiaries of right to repair include: Supply stores Repair stores Insurance companies (repairing products is much cheaper than replacing. Insurance likes to save money too). Health Care Farmers Benificiaries of ni right to repair: Manufacturers? Who benefits more? Who gives more power back to the people?
I'm in Seattle, WA and I have been tinkering / repairing electronics devices 30+ years and absolutely enjoy your videos! I would gladly chip in $20 to be apart of this!
I absolutely love your right to repair advocacy. Thank you oh so much for all your efforts, it is truly and honestly heroic. Im not being hyperbolic. Thru cause and effect, right to repair would literally save some people's lives.
I'd create a media kit (banners, slogans and stuff) and publish it on your website. People who care about right to repair law passed, will be able to download those banners and publish them on their own websites and ouside their brick & mortar stores. Same banners everywhere will become a brand of the #RightToRepair movement and will be recognizeable. You can track how many times the banners were downloaded, then multiply by the amount of daily visitors of the websites, where they were published, and it will be the number of people who are aware of the movement, this number can be used to pitch to any lawmaker. I'm not sure that they will take it into account, but at least you will get a recognizeable brand of the movement and spread awareness about it. After that it will be easier to pitch to people to vote for the #RightToRepair bill.
This, a cohesive brand is important. I'm actually in the works trying to make flyers to pass out in my local neighborhoods, because R2R is on for 2021 in SC!!
I've never heard of a $1B repair chain for devices, so that might be out of the question for financial backing. I believe in your first idea of gaining recognition for the cause. You might need to work backwards though. What ballot do we want it on? When is this ballot? What are those specific guidelines for getting it on the ballot? What resources do we need to start working on those guidelines? etc. etc. Lots of planning and data gathering needed. Think🤔 Think🤔 Think🤔
You alone can’t do it Louis, you would need a massive support from big yotubers to pass it. I believe you have a chance. But i also i think you should organize donations and use this money to do advertising in facebook and other social medias.
Yeah, it really needs to become a whole content creator movement, but I think Louis has the right idea about making a series about it. I just watched a Adam Savage video where he was talking about iFixit, manufacturer forbidden tools and the right to repair his own stuff. These ideas and opinions are shared much more widely than Louis as a cynic believes. We need everyone for this to work, but it's not impossible.
Make a plan. Talk to the parts distributors like Mouser, Digi-Key, Jameco, Newark (notice that it was the parts distributors that gave the money from the automotive right to repair). Talk to equipment manufacturers like Fluke, Allied Electronics, Keysight. Think of who would financially benefit from more repair place (maybe companies that sell equipment to repair shops. More repair shops = more equipment sold). Take both a moral and financial approach as in find people who support the cause morally and also people who would benefit financially.
Hey!!! Just so you know. I subscribed for your board repairs. Being an EE student and doing my own repairs it is wonderful to watch you work and has taught me some tips to use to trouble shoot my own stuff. Watching the other videos where you discuss these issues have been very interesting but depressing to me. I enjoy repairing my own devices and seeing all these companies making it harder and harder really bums me out. Watching the experiences you have gone through with all of this has really been eye opening for the past 3 years. Thank you for the videos you make.
to answer, "what do you guys think im capable of?" you're determination to do something about right to repair is your answer. you seem very much already decided, we've all seen the advocacy efforts you've done so far, and you seem very passionate about it. chasing that drive will get you places. go for it. that is, go for the direct ballot initiative. see how far you get, because you brought up a lot good reasons to do it. life can't always wait
You're on the right track with the pivot towards tight to repair initiatives. The first video I saw of you was in response to Apple threatening to take down your TH-cam archive of board repair. The sense of dread you had in that video is where we'll all be if we hand over control of our lives. We need the right to repair our things.
I'd say to contact your fellow repair TH-camrs to inform their followings that follow them and repair their own devices to put it out there. I believe there are a ton of people who repair their own devices (myself included). The power of social media is bigger that most people think.
I would love to watch you go through this process, to learn how to enact change in our world. You do have influence and I believe that leveraging that to collaborate with other influencers like Linus, Adam Savage, etc. would not only help get this off the ground, but documenting that process would be inspiring and interesting to witness. I wish you the best in this endeavor and look forward to watching you succeed.
Louis, I click on any video that sounds interesting to me. I subscribed to your channel because I support your honesty as a person, and because you are an active advocate for the 'right to repair', and you are against for the lack of a better term "the bullshit these huge companies get away with". Please continue to do what you do, you will always have my support as long as you are consistent. on a side note: I do enjoy watching your board repair videos, because I get to see how simple or cheap the process was in comparison to how much it would have cost if you brought it in to the genius bar :P
Talk with Big tech TH-camrs who genuinely care about tech, like Linus Tech Tips, or Gamer Nexus, and they might influence more and more people to at least know about this issue . and since your resources are limited, choosing where you strike wisely is the best option. take some time to plan things out, and the chaotic good of the internet might swing in your favor
The worry about that method is that pretty much everyone who watches this channel and those videos already agrees with right to repair. You need to reach and convince people who have never heard about you and probably never will.
Yup, in the loop people don't need "activation" it's the outta the loop people who need to be reached and their eyeballs are sold steep by their media gate keepers. That village idiot dollar is a valuable dollar.
I think if he could get some other youtube channels on board that could help reach a lot of the people you describe. If it's just his channel alone I agree with you, but if he reaches out and gets help from all kinds of other channels not just electronic repair channels he might have a chance. One that comes to my mind is AvE but there are shitloads of content creators in crossover types that are impacted by right to repair. Hell farm and car channels alone would probably be interested in lending a hand.
that's a good idea however people who like this channel are usually in socal circles prone to care about this stuff, if you are going to put it to a vote you need way more general appeal
I love this, work out who else is on your side for their own reasons and come together over the common goal, the advantage is they bring their own followers along i.e. different demographics will get on board. Geeks are only a small percentage, environmentalists add significant weight.
Louis, I've really appreciated your illuminating content on this issue. This is an issue that liberals, centrists and conservatives can all come together on. Competition drives our economy, along with consumer rights. Politicians on all sides have become woefully inept with regards to technology, in tandem with tech companies purposefully obfuscating the process. Thank you for doing this hard work, we all benefit by it.
Hi Louis! I've loved your channel for years and I cannot state enough how much I applaud and respect your efforts on Right to Repair. I watched this video on my tablet then rushed to my PC to respond because I had (I hope) a helpful idea to get backing from big companies! Rather than hit up part companies like Autozone etc, how about looking at this from another angle? What do people mostly use their cellphones & tablets for these days? Social media & streaming services! Some are even exclusive on mobile only (Tiktok, Snapchat, etc). So the ability for customers to use exclusive mobile apps, Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, Hulu are very much tied to cellphone use which dominate or even depend on access via mobile platform to thrive. Heck look at Parler, they dropped that app of the Apple & Google stores and it suspect it will never recover as a result of that. For that reason alone it is clear that there is an association for social media companies success tied to mobile devices. OK so the initial thought was, "Too bad this wasn't a few years ago when Netflix was paying anyone to make a show". But that made me this of the above that most customers of Netflix are on mobile. RIGHT so the thought is to hit up these companies. Clearly most of these are on top of the world in user count and market power. Get them on your side and you have access to plenty of exposure and funding. So what's the hook? Discounts for repair for subscribed users and third party warranties to extend repair past the manufacturer warranty just like they do in the Auto industry. Discounts costs could be redeemable by the customer via coupon or the repair shop depending on agreement. This would be a value-add marketing bullet point for streaming companies for instance, "Hey if you are a subscriber you are eligible for discounts on device repair or the ability to purchase third party extended warranty". Now I know that this is a more complicated approach to get buy-in and backing from these companies, but the marketing and public good will companies that support this would generate would be priceless which would result in more customers naturally. So sure, all you need to do is get on the phone with a hungry marketing genius within said companies who has pull with someone in the executive board and pitch this idea too. That or see if Netflix is still handing out shows these days? In the event you ever see this know that you have my full support on whatever it is you decide to do and however you decide to approach it. Reading over my idea sounds like a pipe dream and something you only hear about in some Hollywood script, but it's what came to mind and sharing it is the only way I know to support you at the moment. All my best, -John
Man i couldn't even imagine my vehicle situation if i couldn't work on it myself haha. I have taught myself how to diagnose/fix my vehicles with youtube and google since i was 18. At this point i have seriously saved an least several tens of thousands of dollars by working on them myself. Right to repair is extremely important to me.
I think formulating a plan, regardless of funding, is a great step in the right direction. Even if you are unable, if some other comes forward who can put forth the funds to accomplish the goal, you will have a way forward for them. I genuinely think its the right path. And as far as getting people to get on board, I think you can do it. You got me to care about it.
You could contact Linus to help you surely they’d want to help and they have an additional 10M+ followers, and you or him can get the entire TH-cam technology community talk about it if you do it
He seems likes hes entering a stage of "Leave a legacy to be proud of". Might have a lot of luck going that route, get a bunch of colabs going with different creators. Spread the word. Also, iFixit, homedepot/lowes/ace, all kinda of businesses involved in repairing things might want to donate. Squarespace to build your websites, get colleges involved (law/trades/comp sci)
I like this idea. Soneone can contact known right to repair advocates. IE: Adam savage (tested & Mythbusters) has been an active supporter of right to repair.
Are the initiative laws in New York written in such a way that you could make this a broader initiative? Say combine computer and Auto repair? A bigger tent might be necessary.
@@Krakaet sadly I think you're right. My Googling found he can't make a make a big petition and make a ballot initiates in New York. Some stuff do go to the ballot but their ether bonds or state constitutional amendments - and those have to have legislator to submit it, have have to get a majority vote, twice. On this side of the Mississippi I think I'm only reading Ohio and Massachusetts as any kind of initiative that are binding. For a state referendum that bypasses legislatures, he has to either go west or go to Massachusetts, I think. I am really wondering what's his thoughts about that since all I'm reading he can't do an initiative any of the tri-state area.
Wow, man, I am overwhelmed by your sincerity and your selfconsience of not knowing everything but asking questions. That distincts wise man from stupid shit, who knows all without any doubt.
Does the automotive right to repair cover parts and schematics for car onboard computer systems? If not, why not? Is that an angle you can use to approach those automotive companies that supported right to repair before? Also, have you considered forming a coalition with other computer repair places such as iFixit and so on?
Unfortunately, it does not. If you've ever looked at the wiring schematics or technical repair information you can purchase from the manufacturers the computers in the car are treated like black boxes of mystery. Technical data will show you what the io pins do at the vehicle wiring harness but almost no information is published about what's going on inside.
Hello Mr. Rossman, I enjoy watching your perspective on things. I.e. responses to legislation, economy, etc. My personal opinion when it comes to repairing items is once something breaks on the item, the likelihood something else breaks, increases dramatically. So, in the long run, you are better off replacing the entire item as opposed to repairing it. For the most part. I personally think that your focus on right to repair, needs to address this concern first. Then, once you have a compelling answer to it, aka an elevator pitch, then you can focus on raising money. Love your content, and the work that you do.
Hey man I’m new to this channel and I just want to say your amazing man you shouldn’t just sit back there ain’t many people like you who actually stand up for what they believe and are actually genuine keep doing what you think is right
Alot of tech influencers know who you are Louis and would be happy to assist I'm sure, you should start a fundraiser and put out a call to arms for youttube, reddit, twitter for others to mention the fundraising and highlight it. Even as a British Citizen I would happily donate to the cause.

Honestly, try to get Tech TH-camrs who review technology to get on board with right to repair. There are many tech channels with millions of subscribers, and I think it could potentially be great exposure for the movement if you got a couple of tech youtubers to talk about right to repair. Obviously it wouldn't be simple to do, but it's worth a shot.
I don't know if that would help, considering that most of the audience for even tech channels is probably 12-16 year olds. A TV ad might be helpful to appeal to people who actually vote and are politically active.
If there's going to be solid movement forward without true boatloads of money this may be the best route. It's also possible that the more buzz that you can generate by getting other TH-cam personalities involved and vocal about the cause the more money will become available from big companies.
Tech reviewers are also quite independent from the companies, the larger ones especially, a company trying to manipulate or coerce a reviewer, are also given quite the cold shoulder (see NVIDIA's weird blackmail attempt or employee's personal vendetta against HardwareUnboxed)

So, just as a suggestion... for your customers could you print up a little flier and drop into their box of electronics on the trip back home and direct them to whatever website that explains your position. At that point you could have them poll on the website, ask them to have their friends poll, etc. This also drives it to the customers that your business is threatened because of this. Solicit other repair shops to send their customers to said website. Obviously not nearly enough people are aware of how serious of an issue this is and I think the customers would be a good place to spear head the the initiative as they will be the ones left without recourse if it all gets shut down, never mind the independent repair technicians left without jobs. Sorry this post is probably not the most coherent as It’s getting late. I really want you to win.
A few big ones can not compete with a lot of little ones. DO THIS!!! When your campaign is gearing up and get publicity, the money will come in. You will get that momentum and push for it. The power of the people is so much bigger then a few big companies. The key is to get everyone on the same page. I don't live in the USA, what you do effects us as well. A domino effect. So i wish you luck and I support you for 1000%
That's because they want to keep filling their own bank accounts. They don't want to cut their profit. Same reason all those companies have their products made in faraway places by people paid very little. Usually in genuinely dangerous working conditions.

I was going to comment a week ago but was busy that day. I came back to say what I need to say... If you are personally interested in this issue, you should do whatever is in your capabilities. I think your idea of turning into a show has a lot of potential. It can fund the journey and can pull in interest on the issue as you said. But I also think some of that interest can be from rich enough people who can donate you big amounts for the cause. Even if you fail, it is better than nobody trying to fix the issue. Don't worry about the small consequences of failure. You are not trying it to fail but succeed. And I want to share with you words of Samuel Beckett: "Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better". I try to live my life on this motto. It made me accomplish many things in my life that I wouldn't even try... You don't know how to get right to repair to pass? Try all ways you can imagine until there is no more passion left inside you. Best of luck. Don't forget. There is always people who support this cause, even though they are not rich enough to send any money. And many of us appreciate your efforts.
Do it 100% we have nothing to lose. Next time instead of $5-20 million it will be $10-40million. Showing regular people how wasteful “green” companies like Apple are scrapping repairable devices can be used to your advantage. The other point is the cost difference between buy a new one for $2000 and do a 1 hour repair for $200. You’re not asking for the source code of OSx just the access to buy a “standard” usb C chip and know where the wires in a 16 layer board go to it. You could reverse engineer it and buzz every trace if you wanted to
You should definitely try it. Every time a new concept is evolving there are people bidding against it. As many people stated you are the right person for it. It is important on this path to stay true to the truth and admit mistakes if made but you got reason on ur side and I thing in such a split world as today’s we need things that bring us together. Fighting for the power of the people is one of them.
This is one of many great ideas Rogan has massive audience they will see this. And you are just the kind of person that Rogan would like to have on his show.
If Louis wants this done, then I think he needs to dedicate himself full time to it. There's just no other way I think the folks from Massachusetts are right in that you need a LOT of money to do this. But I also think Louis has some unique followings that can help him. I also think asking for small donations is great idea. Look at how much people love Bernie Sanders and donate to his campaigns. Despite him losing his presidential bids at the primaries twice. I would love to donate to a real campaign for right to repair spear-headed by Louis. And if he failed, I'd still consider my money well spent. He can start small with a go fund me or something. Get some seed money. Hire a couple people that have experience with direct ballot initiatives. Louis has the passion, they've got the experience. Pick a state. Get a thorough understanding of the demographics of that state, it's laws on direct ballot voting, etc. Then start talking to other repair shops, big and small. And anyone else that would have an interest in right to repair. Show them you're serious. Get some bigger donations. Start the ball rolling. And if he documents the whole thing, I'd watch every episode. I'd share with every person I knew in my state. I would gladly push people to the poles. This would be the first ballot initiative that I'd be really invested in. I hope he does it. I'd follow the whole way through.
I have just discovered your videos (yep, I live under a rock) and I really appreciate what you have done and what you are trying to do. You are very well spoken and are clearly very intelligent. I really don't like that fruit company, but their iPod is one of the best ways to listen to my music. I have struggled with the software updates that have been put out to update the device or iTunes which I use to load the music on the device. Some of their updates have actually broke their own programs. Features will go away or quit working properly and I cannot believe they would put out an update that would break their own stuff. I have slowly realized that they don't care if they break their own shit, because they are more interested in getting people to buy the next one that comes along with all new shit. Your videos are confirming my theory, because now I know they are doing the same thing with their computers. Please keep up your crusade, and you will get more followers and hopefully we will get somewhere... eventually. Hang in there. You are the good guy in this.
Maybe you should just put it out there and specifically ask some of the bigger companies(or anyone intrested) that advocate for right to repair to contact you. Best case scenario you could end up with is that there is enough intrest and hopefully sufficient financial backing to get it moving. Anyway i'd like to thank you for all the work you've done. Most people tend to forget how much it takes to appear at all those hearings and you Sir are not just talking, you are actually doing stuff! Reddit might also help out a ton as seen with the GME Movement. Right to Repair is not about Profit. It could help some other movements to push for a direct vote on the matter. Keep fighting Louis!

Politicians are actively trying to remove direct ballot initiatives right now, and I hope everyone speaks up to put a stop to it, because stuff like this will never work if they can remove our say in our own government
That is so very true!
I did not even know it was possible to go around politicians like this. We should have more of this.
Robert Crawshaw No, it shouldn’t even be a question about whether the most trusted way to vote should remain available.
And here I am wishing for national-level direct ballot initiatives (such as regarding congressional pay and benefits, etc).
Get the TH-camrs who fix and repair their own stuff to get onboard and promote to get the action passed where they live.

Getting a documentary done might be in your best interest. I mean, the sheer amount of effort you’ve put into this is story worthy.
An indie one, if it hits Netflix or becomes that widely known it will be nothing but a self patting on the back wankery with corporations and people who had nothing to do with it.
(looking at you, "Don't f**k with cats")
I feel this would be a good idea. Do a documentary on Netflix if you can get it passed onto Netflix or somewhere.
Theyll take that option over right to repair in a blink.

definitely in favor of clean energy, but god I hate extremists. almost worse than lobbyists

Benificiaries of right to repair include:
Supply stores
Repair stores
Insurance companies (repairing products is much cheaper than replacing. Insurance likes to save money too).
Health Care
Farmers

Who benefits more? Who gives more power back to the people?
Hope this gets views and ends up in "trending"! You are one of the people who seriously want make the world a better place for everyone!

Looks like we're all gonna chip in 20 bucks.
I live in mexico and even I'm broke I'm willing to put my money on this...
I'm in Seattle, WA and I have been tinkering / repairing electronics devices 30+ years and absolutely enjoy your videos! I would gladly chip in $20 to be apart of this!

Watching this 7 months after it came out is so amazing because I've now seen all the progress you've made! Glad to be a part of the ride
Make Facebook group ,right to repair
I've never heard of a $1B repair chain for devices, so that might be out of the question for financial backing. I believe in your first idea of gaining recognition for the cause. You might need to work backwards though. What ballot do we want it on? When is this ballot? What are those specific guidelines for getting it on the ballot? What resources do we need to start working on those guidelines? etc. etc. Lots of planning and data gathering needed. Think🤔 Think🤔 Think🤔
Yea, but don't forget that others might act upon where you "think"
and these others in fact act, making it a race and not an easiest one.
You alone can’t do it Louis, you would need a massive support from big yotubers to pass it. I believe you have a chance. But i also i think you should organize donations and use this money to do advertising in facebook and other social medias.
Plaster the fight everywhere possible. Enough recognition will make it impossible to ignore. I hate fb etc but their advertising is effective.
Mr beast
I bet a documentary directer could turn this story into a Netflix series about an underdog going against big tech companies. I'd watch it.
I'm broke, but I'm right here with you. Commenting for the alg
to answer, "what do you guys think im capable of?" you're determination to do something about right to repair is your answer. you seem very much already decided, we've all seen the advocacy efforts you've done so far, and you seem very passionate about it. chasing that drive will get you places. go for it. that is, go for the direct ballot initiative. see how far you get, because you brought up a lot good reasons to do it. life can't always wait
This.
You're on the right track with the pivot towards tight to repair initiatives. The first video I saw of you was in response to Apple threatening to take down your TH-cam archive of board repair. The sense of dread you had in that video is where we'll all be if we hand over control of our lives. We need the right to repair our things.
Never give up. So glad I came across your videos.
You need to get all the big youtubers in on this, you can't do this alone but I do believe you can get this shit passed.
I'd say to contact your fellow repair TH-camrs to inform their followings that follow them and repair their own devices to put it out there. I believe there are a ton of people who repair their own devices (myself included). The power of social media is bigger that most people think.
Go for it damit, I'll throw $500 at you personally if you set up a fundraiser, this is the fight of the decade and almost everyone has a dog in it.
GN does seem to be onboard with R2R
The worry about that method is that pretty much everyone who watches this channel and those videos already agrees with right to repair. You need to reach and convince people who have never heard about you and probably never will.
Yup, in the loop people don't need "activation" it's the outta the loop people who need to be reached and their eyeballs are sold steep by their media gate keepers. That village idiot dollar is a valuable dollar.
Why "you" ? it's all about US !

Very good point and lots of people care about this issue more and more
Louis, I've really appreciated your illuminating content on this issue.
I would really like to see Louis on the Joe Rogan podcast discussing right to repair and how to get momentum behind this movement before its too late.
You always make me wish I was American so I could directly support you.
You've brought greater awareness to many people, and that is moving the ball forward.

Are the initiative laws in New York written in such a way that you could make this a broader initiative? Say combine computer and Auto repair? A bigger tent might be necessary.
its all right to repair, i dont see why it wouldn't be expanded
I could be wrong, but I don't think we have ballot initiatives in New York.
Good point
“Louis Rossman right to repair vlog ep 3: APPLE TRIED TO HAVE ME KILLED???”
Wow, man, I am overwhelmed by your sincerity and your selfconsience of not knowing everything but asking questions. That distincts wise man from stupid shit, who knows all without any doubt.
Thank you for everything you have done! Really inspiring.
Right to repair is a really serious topic that most people don't even think about.
Tech tuber like Linus should get involved with this.

Hello Mr. Rossman,
I enjoy watching your perspective on things. I.e. responses to legislation, economy, etc.
When it comes to politics there are some rules involving foreign donations. you may not be allowed to donate if the cause specifically says it's political action.
Then we "crowdfund" a business which donates all of its assets to louis. There is always a way.

Honestly, try to get Tech TH-camrs who review technology to get on board with right to repair. There are many tech channels with millions of subscribers, and I think it could potentially be great exposure for the movement if you got a couple of tech youtubers to talk about right to repair. Obviously it wouldn't be simple to do, but it's worth a shot.
great minds think alike lol

Your channel is cool.

When your campaign is gearing up and get publicity, the money will come in. You will get that momentum and push for it. The power of the people is so much bigger then a few big companies.

I agree with the top votes alot, I would like to add that I would love to see and follow it as well. And you fighting for a great cause.

If Louis wants this done, then I think he needs to dedicate himself full time to it. There's just no other way
I think the folks from Massachusetts are right in that you need a LOT of money to do this.
