  • The MK8 GTI is the perfect example of an objectively good car that is wholly unexciting.

I don't know how you can do a track review on greasy A/S tires and cooked brakes. Hard to get a feel for the car. The Mk8 is really sorted on the track with proper rubber.

The tires don't look sporty at all. The GTI was never and is not a track car. With some subtle changes with the brakes, and tires it can still very capable. But the main thing that the GTI does well is that it's an amazing road car.

Is it an "amazing" road car or a boring road car? The Mk7 GTI Clubsport shows that VW can make something that competes more closely with a RenaultSport Megane or Honda Civic Type R when they want to, so why isn't that a permanent offering in the model range? 🙂 [Some not very bright VW enthusiasts complained "the GTI Clubsport is too expensive compared to the Golf R and has a slower 0-100kph" seemingly ignoring the most important point: the *Clubsport is MORE FUN TO DRIVE!* two-wheel-drive = more lively & lighter, stiffer suspension = more lively etc.]
Some people want their road car to be fun (all the time), not just competent! Cars like the RenaultSport Megane are always raring to go, they are silly, they are grin machines. 🙂
Harry Metcalfe said in his review of the Mk8 Golf R: "Most of the time you *may as well just be driving a normal Golf.* It's all a bit boring. " In that case, what's the point of having the fun variant as a daily driver?! He strongly preferred both the Civic Type R or his GR Yaris over the Golf.

I was burning a McLaren on the track, but the difference was definitely the driver. The GTI is a very good track car with good tires, race fluid, and real pads.

@@mengx94 he's talking about stock gti. You can make any car a track car by spending more money, but when it comes to stock gti has no business being on a track.

I've had mine DSG S since May 2022, hands down the best daily driver I have owned. My favorite cars I've owned being my Del Sol (b16), then my 1998 Civic DX Coupe ("raw") and then my GTI. The tires are my biggest gripe but I don't wanna drop $2k on wheels and tires.

Honestly you dont even have to do wheels. Even a good set of tires helps a lot

Had a 7.5 GTI and while it was one of the best dailies I ever had it did feel pretty numb and soulless even with a moderate amount of mods (wheels, tires, bars, coils, other chassis/suspension stuff), especially relative to a something like a Fiesta ST or NA/NB Miata. My 7.5 had stiff rear spring rates and stiffer rear bar to help with rotation and that still did not really make it much spicier to drive. I sold that car and drove a MK5 Rabbit for a year and somehow that car with a few mods was a blast to drive in the canyons compared to the 7.5 GTI despite being slower and having tall gears. I think if I could go back I'd probably get another Fiesta or a Veloster N for a fun daily.

That track just got resurfaced and everyone is raving about it. I'm a local so I've driven the old track but didn't get a chance to make it back to the track this summer. How did you like it? My dad's 2010 GTI is slow to upshift as well, seems they haven't changed that at all.

I can hear how loud the tires are through the video. That thing must have been cooked lol

The stock tires are loud after 5k miles driving normal, I could imagine what those look like in my mind.

Needs some more front camber, tires, and rear sway bar realistically to be good for track use. Probably pads and fluid too.

Soon VW will replace the steering wheel with a capacitive wheel, capacitive brake pedal, capacitive throttle. It'll be just like playing a racing game on your phone.

@@TassieLorenzoSucks since outside of the 40th or Autobahn you're stuck on crummy all seasons from the factory. At least VW is tossing summer rubber on all manual mk8's for '24, but you have to step up to Autobahn spec if you want a DSG with summer rubber now that the 40th is gone.

The GTI has been soulless for a long time... Is the GTI S equivalent to the TCR? The last GTI that was somewhat comparable to a Type R or RenaultSport Megane was the Mk7 GTI Clubsport (stiffer suspension, functional aero, bucket seats etc), but even then it was still a bit tamer than the other two offerings. For whatever reason, VW goes out of there way to take the fun out of normal GTIs and Rs: numb steering, soft suspension, rubbery shifter, delayed throttle response (time based delay WTF?!) etc, instead of doing as Renault or Honda do and putting as much fun in as possible (at the expense of comfort, but isn't fun the number one priority in such a car?! as well as practicality of a shopping hatchback of course).

Sounds like a pile of trash for track driving. Probably makes for an ok daily driver minus all that glossy black panels and touch controls yuck
