- The Mazda3 Turbo Premium Plus hatchback is stylish and refined, but let's find out once and for all if it drives anything remotely like a real hot hatch.

Mazda soul red is just amazing on any model
Too bad the quality sucks. Wash it a few times and you will have swirl marks. This car needs full PPF for sure to keep the paint looking immaculate.
It does look incredible, best colour for most Mazda cars imo, but I've heard it chips easily
Not having a manual was a missed opportunity for Mazda
Would you trade the turbo for a manual transmission?
They have a manual on the fwd. But no slip diff was a miss
They're planning to have a manuel for the 2025 model turbo premium plus
@@hayden.Estatesandexhaustsif they do I’ll sell my Alltrack for it
@@hayden.Estatesandexhaustsif so thats a game changer! But an 8sp is what this needs to make the most of the power....
Traded my 9th gen Si for this car in this exact spec, and I agree with everything you said.
This car is a great daily driver, my commute is 90 minutes each way and the Mazda is just a relaxing experience the whole time. AWD and 250hp/320tq practically off idle makes the straight line performance above most actual sport compacts. Power really falls off after 5300 RPM though. I pull the paddle at 5000 to account for the relatively slow shifts. This engine is the anti vtec.
The car will hustle around a back road, but it just doesn’t feel great doing it. Definitely feels sportier than entry level luxury cars like the A4 or C class but definitely not a hot hatch. The front end feels very heavy (way heavier than my old si.) And the steering is a pretty slow ratio, but nicely weighted. Biggest weakness is the brakes though, I’m pretty sure they’re the same brakes on the standard 3, I wouldn’t want to put too much heat in them.
Anti-VTEC is a good summary of the 2.5T haha
9th gen is a beast!
I would trade all the luxury gimmick features like sunroof, bose speakers, leather seats, 360 cameras for bigger brakes and better tires. The turbo 3 could really use a sport base model with cloth seats, better brakes, better tires.
@@ZygreneSo... a diesel.
@@Unchainedmaple888those parts are easily replaceable though. My 16 civic was done same way. Still feels luxurious after
It's a great daily warm hatch, def not meant to be a hot hatch
If I were to buy a new car today, this would be the one. Elegant design with German level refinement and expression.
I'm glad Mazda isn't equipping their cars with CVTs like Honda and Toyota currently are.
My wife recently picked this over the Integra Aspec. The quality of the interior alone swayed her to the Mazda.
Definitely think they should bring back the MS3 but man I just love the way the whole modern Mazda lineup looks and that red color real pops in the sunshine.
Only Mazda I ever owned is my NA6 Miata (1991) but I learned to drive in a 2005 Mazda 3 which was a fantastic car and had a friend with a early 2000s Protege growing up that we all loved and all that said, I would highly consider a Mazda if I wanted some basic modern car (or 100% an ND2 if I wanted a modern sports car lol). Surprised they never really exploded in popularity but those who know KNOW
A MAZDA DRIVER FOREVER! ZOOM ZOOM!
While I love the turbo engine Mazda has, I do feel it's more at home in the CX-5/50 than the 3 (at least from my impressions having driven it a few times and having a CX-5 Turbo in our garage). The sweet spot of the 3 is def the N/A Manual IMO. 32K with all the must have features like Bose Audio and weighs under 3100lbs. the turbo being mid to high 30s feels a bit much. Not saying bad value, just near 40K for a Mazda 3 sounds insane to say
Awaiting the Mazda spirit racing 3
I think part of the thing would be using the built in sports mode to help with the shifting.
I really enjoy your reviews and selection. You bring a lot of knowledge and practicality.
I have a CX-9 (same engine) and that low end torque is addicting. Always smile a little when I down shift to pass. Had a CX-90 (369 ft lbs torque) as a loaner for a few weeks while I had some TSB work done on my car. Same Mazda low end torque on downshifts but even crazier. I was getting better MPG with the eco stuff turned off. Now if they can get that engine in a Mazda 3 👊🏽
I really really like the Mazda3. This was on my list but i have a deposit on a GRC.
As a 2020 MAZDA 3 A HATCH FWD owner i will say i love the car as a daily, and the mazda maps is worth it if you have HUD as it shows you the exits and lane(s) you need to be in on it and not just your speed
a manual option would have definitely made me consider this car more
I wish they'd bring a proper Mazdaspeed3 back though
I'm willing to bet you drive a automatic now yet still make these stupid comments 🤡
It does come with manual...
@@MrMentos876 no it doesn't not this version. Doesn't matter this person still wouldn't buy it he drives a automatic
@@MrMentos876 only the fwd NA option. The turbo awd is automatic only
The brakes and rear end design really hold it back
I'd call it a room-temperature-hatch.
Such a shame we didn't get a proper Mazdaspeed spec. Everyone has a performance division these days except Mazda, it seems.
To me it's closer to an 80s rally car with the larry soft suspension that still follows your inputs pretty well. It's basically a reliable GTI with easier maintenance. I get 30mpg on road trips, mostly 24-26 with a lot of around town.
The turbo torque on this thing makes me drive way too fast no matter where I'm at. It only feels good with sport mode on though, it's ass power delivery otherwise. Don't even bother shifting past 5, stay in the torque instead. You gotta shift at 4.5 for it to hit 5k RPMs on the dot. It's way faster than the 2.0T Giulia I had and rides way better. I might downsize to 16s.
The Corksport full intake and just an axle back muffler allow it to breathe WAY better!! I can now take my car past 5800rpm without feeling a drop off!! And that is the heavier Mazda6 but using this same engine!
I think the GTI analogy is on point. It's really the same recipe, but executed at a slightly lower price point.
I have had the 2023 PPT for a little over a year now and my thoughts. The fuel economy on this car is far from good. Especially in only city driving. Also using the power say goodbye to the gas. Literally the only negative. Positives. This car is a master of deception. It loves moving much faster than you think it is. And if you push it this car will give it to you. It may not be a manual full blooded hatch but I like to see it as a grown up version. This thing will burn alot of cars you see every day driving around. And the looks, especially with the aero package, the interior is luxurious AF. Besides the bad MPG, it's my absolute favorite 3 they have made. And yes I owned a MazdaSpeed3.
I have a premium trim with a MT if you’d like to review to compare to this one. I’m not far from this road
Hope this happens. Premium 3 MT owner here and honestly feel like it’s pretty capable considering some of its drawbacks.
@@z3ro931 bolt ons, higher octane, and tune completely wake the NA up
I would love to see what he thought in comparison to the turbo. The NA 2.5 has proven to be more reliable also.
@@wbwayne8887 I would say the 2.5T is just as reliable. Plenty of examples out there with high mileage. Now the new 2.5 with an EGR is what is more likely to have reliability issues. Late 2023+ on NA’s
I wish Mazda would do an Si competitor 3 with FWD/LSD/manual and the ND2 engine and Brembos, and IRS.
Fantastic looking car.
Is the title supposed to say 2023?
Love my 2019 Miata, mazda makes such great cars. I miss my Mazdapeed 3 and its too bad they've abandoned their performance models!
So sad these aren’t in Australia
This would be my ideal daily car.
the car in stock form leaves a lot to be desired. But if you add some better tires, the new corksport full intake (they include the charge pipe now as well), strut tower brace, bare minimum an axle back exhaust, and some better brake pads (ideally rotors and pads swapped out) the car makes a big change for the better! Just those changes alone will make you fall in love with the car. I did all of these things with my Mazda6 which is FWD using the same engine and have been contemplating getting the Mazda6 in its place simply because of the AWD. If all those changes work so well in the heavier Mazda6 FWD platform, there is no reason to think that the Mazda3 wouldn't benefit even more from those simple mods! Serious increase in low end torque (which was already good) but then it actually pulls to redline without running out of steam! And this is all before the tune which will help even more! It can be a hot hatch with a lil love still retain all the things that make it near luxury level... Mazda went way too conservative as always but if you love making simple mods all on your own the reward is worth the little bit of work!
I have been a fan of Mazda. Used to own a V6 Manual Hatch 6. Own a NC MX-5 now. More than once I have thought about getting one of these but that lower lip sticking out like a spoiled toddler that was told they couldn't have a toy is a show stopper for me. Also like someone else mentioned, not having a stick option is also keeping me from turning in my 2015 STI for this. Mazda you're almost there but almost just isn't good enough to justify giving up my venerable, about to turn 10 year old, STI for this hatch!
The lower lip spoiler is only on the premium plus. Get a base turbo and you don’t get the lip. It never scrapes if that’s what you’re worried about
great little daily, its nicely executed. but man it annoys me so much that Mazda abandoned the Speed3. surely it can't cost that much to upgrade this thing!
I’d rather have a 6-speed automatic instead of a CVT like the WRX. The brake pedal isn’t fabulous compared to other models but the stopping distance is still pretty good.
I ❤ MAZDA
Road name pls
They really should have turned this into a mazdaspeed 3.
Is AWD the only reason to pick this over the Integra? Anymore thoughts on comparing this to the Integra
AWD, a real automatic, engine performance and interior and exterior design.
Personally, I couldn’t drop this kind of money on that 1.5t. Cool that Honda offers a manual, but most will have the CVT, not a good power train for an expensive car IMO.
The interior is much nicer on the Mazda. And I think the design is too, but that’s a personal preference I suppose.
The integra definitely wins on handling dynamics, fuel efficiency and spatial efficiency.
Integra for practicality and efficiency. Mazda for the German-esque driving feel, design, and AWD.
dat torque. And also because who wants a 1.5l engine?
@@Zygrene have you driven this engine with some minor Mods?
@@doctorferdinand1003 Mazda has really stepped it up on their interiors! The are pretty and easy to navigate! I still love mine after almost 91k miles and almost 6 years of ownership!
GRC all day long
"An angry egg" 😄On-point description! I've always thought it looks great from the front, but the hood is too long for the short hatchback rear. Looks like someone took a luxury sedan and chopped off the rear end.
I've seen one in white. It actually looks like an egg.
Imo, the Sedan looks much better, but at least Mazda offers both.
Dude can you read my mind everything I think of a car you post it a few days later
That's one good looking Red Easter Egg...
Ayyy it’s my exact car.
Just wished these come in manual
I'm willing to bet you drive a automatic now yet still make these stupid comments
@@BitcoinTo150K someone got triggered.
Idk what’s the down side of offering both manual and automatic
But u do you.
@30hours51 you don't support the cause but are the loudest in the room is my point. We need sales my dude not words on the internet 🤣
@@BitcoinTo150K ok 👍
Intriguing package. It seems like an unusual combination of traits, not seen much in other brands. For the right buyer, probably a great option. For me, I'd prefer if it had a little more back seat and cargo room, and if they'd worked a bit more "zoom-zoom" on the handling and brakes to go with all that torque and HP. I just drove this drivetrain in the CX-5, and the torque is nice. Plus, they do a wonderful job making the little "ute" drive like a nice car. But given that this is a car with low center of gravity, why not perk up the handling and braking to match the drivetrain? Or offer an additional trim level? (Perhaps not enough market?) Not sure how long this 6-speed auto has been around, but it is falling behind the better autos now. (Seems like many manufacturers are sticking with their transmissions for a lot longer these days. Subaru has been running the 2.5 Boxer and CVT combo for over 10 years now.) Thanks for testing this. Nice to get some variety in your tests. Hope your Type S is keeping you sufficiently entertained.
I agree on the transmission. It needs no less than 8 speeds to compete and would probably surpass most on the market now! Also the CX-5 Turbo with the right tires is an amazing handling little SUV! My wife has the regular NA CX-5 with Mazda 19in wheels but oversized (still within +0 specs). The handling exceeds what the engine can do which means the turbo car would be perfect!
Nothing hot about these at all. Drives like a Lexus.
Agreed but that's okay. Some people prefer comfort over edginess, it's what made the GTI a top seller also. Mazda don't sell edgy cars, this isn't a Mazdaspeed.
Punches above it's weight?? It's 40K. It DOES cost as much as a BMW 2 series. A Mercedes A class. An Audi A3. And it's only a 6 speed, and with a "cost saving" torsion beam axel. Inexcusable. This car sucks. Would never consider this car over a GTI. Other than; you just like the way it looks, there is no reason to buy this car. None.
