Really learning your hair, scalp and skin is so important and also having realistic expectations about our hair. Natural hait gets preyed upon with some many claims on how doing xzy (that usually don't make sense) will do to make your natural hair become something it's not.

Co-washing has a very defined purpose. If you’re on vacation in a tropical country and you’re swimming several times a day in salt water. Cowashing right after being in salt water helps from the excessive drying effect.

In my view, there are no "rules" in the natural hair community, only trends.
Please explain what, in your mind, is the difference between using a leave-in conditioner, and adding "moisturizers" to your hair after you wash and condition it. What are these moisturizers that you use? That has me a little confused.
I agree, strongly, that everyone has to take a personal and individualized approach to their own hair.
You are, indeed, very classy, beautiful, and healthy. I am so glad that you are on TH-cam representing.❤

Very informative video. 💕 I don't do co-washing. It just doesn't make sense to keep your hair dirty. Washing every week is a no-no for as well. I'm also at waist length with my hair. I wash my hair once I month and refresh my scalp with rose water every week. With trimming sessions, I used to do every 6-8 weeks but then I realized I was cutting off unnecessary hair. Now I trim every 3-4 months as needed. For my scalp, I have the opposite issue. I can't put any oil or moisturizer on my scalp due to scalp irritation. The only product I put on my scalp is rose water. However, I moisturize my hair with rose water, oil, and a leave-in cream. I have high porosity hair so this method helps to keep the moisture in my hair much longer. I can't air-dry my hair like I used to. It takes my hair 2 days to dry. After washing and moisturizing my hair I let my hair sit in a t-shirt for about an hour then blow dry with my RevAir and put my hair in 4 chunky flat-twists. Let my hair relax for one week and install my mini-twists using my DIY hair butter cream sealant. This style lasts up to 4 weeks. Being that I have 2 jobs it's hard to even wash my hair every week or even 2 weeks. I've been doing this for almost a year and the best decision I ever made.

      Hello justbeuneik !
Co-washing: never tried it and never will, when I wash my hair it needs to be clean
Washing every week: I don't have that kind of time, lol, doing my hair is therapeutic but lets not get carried away
Trimming: I used to be the "length over health" girl, so I never got a trim every 6-8 weeks. When I started trimming my ends I did it once a year and realized last year I need to keep up with my ends better. This year I have trimmed 3x.
I use rose water was a toner !

Co-washing may not be for everyone, but it does not leave your hair dirty! Please educate yourself so that you will not spread such ignorance. Co-washing started on the basis that many conditioners contain the exact same detergents or cleansers that are found in shampoos, minus the sudsing agents. Some co-wash products have been specificallg designed and created to gently cleanse the hair and can remove product build-up. My hair smells and looks amazing and behaves beautifully after I co-wash it. I use a deep cleansing/clarifying shampoo, maybe once a month or every six weeks.

I co washed for the longest time after going natural over 10 years ago. At the end of last year, I started using shampoo and the difference in the way my hair soaks up products is like night and day. My conditioners, treatments and moisturizers work much better than they did with co washed hair, and I’m beginning to notice real growth.

The natural rules I don’t follow is that I don’t follow a trim schedule and I don’t use any stylers on my hair.
Interesting to see what works for other people. Your maintenance sounds a lot like how my mom cares for her hair. Her hair(4c/b) is thicker and coarser than mine(4b). I’ve been natural all my life but I struggled to grow my hair when I started to care for my own hair. Washing once a week, co wash once between washes, oiling scalp the day before I wash my hair, oiling ends daily, long term protective styles(2-4weeks), and a fine and fragile tangle teazer were the key to finally getting length retention.

I wash my hair ever week, and it's never dry, and i didn'tnhave matting. When i did every 2 weeks, it was dry and matted. Also, my hair is never really dirty because I don't use a lot of stuff in my hair.

I’ve been on natural hair TH-cam since its inception and the one common denominator I’ve noticed of the women with the best quality, healthy hair (not just long) is that they rarely if at all “protective style” with tight braids and other synthetic hair. I’ve done all the tips and tricks and once I finally noticed this pattern after like 10 years is when I noticed the biggest improvement in my hair. A lot of bw have fine, fragile hair strands and these consistent tight styles and weaves are causing breakage and second hand neglect of the hair and this is the one natural hair hill that I will die on. If you want to do an actual protective style do a low manipulation style with your own hair like this creator. Also a very rare opinion is that most bw have medium to high porosity hair that’s very dry and to me that means we should be washing weekly to replenish the moisture in the hair because it dries out so quickly as well as using a lot less product to prevent buildup on the strands which causes further dryness, dullness and breakage. I also deep condition every time I wash for 5-10 minutes like the directions say and skip conditioner all together. I blow out almost every time I wash as well and think these tight styles and infrequent washing are a lot more damaging than conservative use of heat tools. Very rare opinions I know 😂.

Hello KM. I think your thoughts are fine. In this community we listen to everyone.
I have said it once and I will say it 100x more: my hair thrives when I leave it alone. In 2017 I had a set back because I was literally wearing my hair in a slicked high TIGHT bun everyday, never again.
The only time I had weave was back in college for homecoming; I was in the fashion show. I don't know if I was allergic but I was itchy the entire time.

I think the information on natural hair exceeds the information on any other hair type, which can be incredibly overwhelming. I was so overwhelmed in the beginning of my natural hair journey. Many of the information are quite harmful and damaging to natural hair. I've been natural for 10 years now and I've tried just about everything on my hair in the attempt to grow it. I had to learn through trial and error. It was difficult but that is how you gain wisdom. A lot of it falls down understanding what your hair likes and dislikes. I personally do not put anything on my scalp not even oils because my scalp will on fire. That's what I have discovered based on past experiences. I think knowing the science of the scalp and hair can also be important. I strongly believe that conditioners should not be applied to the scalp nor should deep conditioner be left on overnight and that's by understanding how the scalp functions. Natural hair is honesty not as complicated as other people make it out to be. It's so simply and so beautiful.

Good morning Ruth. I love that you have been able to figure out what does and does not work for you.
For the conditioner or deep conditioner on the scalp, I don’t make it a point to, but if some gets in I ’ll just rinse.
I remember the deep conditioner over night craze, I never did that, at most I may have done an hour.
Unfortunately I think there is a lot of information out about natural hair because many people still prey on the fact that they know they can make outrageous claims and some will be believe the claims.

Thanks for the video. CoWashing is an extra step not an only step. I use conditioner while I detangle it out of the shower. Then I go in the shower and do a full shampoo and conditioner. I deep condition it most times than not. We are all individual and my hair is different. Medications illness age lifestyle environment means we have different hair needs. I listen to y'all then I do me. Follow no one and learn everything sis

Thanks Mya-Karren for another informative video! _ The rule I use to follow when I first went natural was co-washing,... after experiencing breakage I immediately ditched that idea! I now stick to what works best for my hair. There's so much info available for natural hair ..it's overwhelming... My simple hair routine has allowed my hair to grow pass shoulder level. (Many thanks from Olivia ..UK)

I wash my hair every 2 weeks, so once a month right now I use a standard blow dryer to stretch my hair with the tension method. 2023 for me has been the year of the stretch, which I am really liking.
When I straighten my hair in December for my Hair-versary I will use my Revlon dryer brush.

    • @KlassicallyKept
      @KlassicallyKept  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hello!
Yes, according to a few stylist, yes. This seems to be a new phenomena.
I saw a few shorts and one video about a young women who is claiming not blow drying her caused damaged. The young women's hair was broken off in the back, air drying did not do that, she may have other things going on.
I really would love to have a conversation with a dermatologist or trichologist because the idea does not make sense to me. When someone says dry rot, I think of wood.

Washing the hair every week seems like hard work, and it would definitely involve a lot of manipulation. Definitely not for me.
I do moisturize my hair every day with a moisturizing hair tea because I have high porosity hair. My hair dries a day after moisturizing so that really helps me retain moisture in my hair.
