    I'm a liscensed cosmetologist and product owner and what you are saying has validity. I was a huge proponent of trimming every 3 to 4 months but now i have been changing my stance to more of a search and destroy method and trimming the actual splits. People are so focused on having blunt ends and many times it can make the hair look better for particular styles BUT tampered ends doesn't necessarily mean damage or split ends. Tapered ends are absolutely fine and just as beautiful. Many beat themselves up if their ends aren't blunt. I'm heat trained and I use heat every 2 weeks. I have been retaining length with trims over the last 2 years with trims every 4 months. I'm thinking of changing to every 6 month to a year with monthly search and destroy.

      It only makes sense to not trim if you’re able to retain length without doing it. I used to not trim and my hair would never pass my shoulder blades. I was able to grow my hair past my bra strap once I started trimming every 3 months. I always tell ppl who struggle with growing their hair to trim their ends regularly and they never listen.

      Black community act like it's so taboo not to do it. I mean gosh 😑🙄. I did a big chop in 2016. By the time I saw a stylist in 2020 for silk press, My hair was down my back. It even got a couple of people's attention in the salon shop and I barely trimmed it all those years.
      Of course, the stylist claimed she had to trim it, I trusted her and allowed her to do it, and I was infuriated that half my length was gone😡. It literally felt like I was starting all over. Now, I did go to her again, which you may think that's crazy, but I kind of feel sorry for these "professionals" who are taught a certain way and believe certain practices pertaining to black hair. The two more times I went to her, I avoided cutting. She was trying to tell me it needed trimming, even the young teenage girl there whispered to her mother why I didn't get it trimmed. I will never let anybody cut my hair again.

    My mom did my hair until I was 10 or 11. She used Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo and conditioner on it and I never had a trim until I was 15 and even then it was about a one inch trim on the ends once blown out. My hair was waist length straightened. I know from experience that a lot of this stuff is unnecessary.

  • @emmyl487

    I remember KimmayTube’s journey to tailbone length hair, and she very infrequently did any trims if I recall correctly. The first time I reached waist length, I had only trimmed my hair once a year over a 4 year period. I have never done it on a schedule. Doing it frequently ensures you will never retain length, and keeps “hairstylists” in business.

I’ve only blowdried it twice since then. I always protective style 100% of the time & I have long healthy hair. Recently, I stretched my hair without heat & my ends looked like yours but my gut told me hair is healthy. I’ve been tempted to blowout to get a more informed look at my hair. But there is no excessive breakage, it looks extremely healthy & shows up differently depending on how I stretch it. This is the 2nd time I’ve been waist length without a trim. I agree with the over combing and obsession with definition and smoothness. I noticed when I would wear durags and bonnets it would break the nape of my hair off. I haven't worn anything to bed in months and the back and nape of my hair has grown about 4 inches and is beginning to go down my back finally. I also don't believe we should be doing styles that create to much tension like constantly retwisting locs, high sleek ponytails and tight braids. Its creating traction alopecia. And our hair grows up then out and then as it gets heavier it hangs down, other cultures their hair just grows up and then downward. Another thing stylist don't mention is that the hair grows at different rates throughout your hair so it will NEVER be %100 even lol. And for me my sides grows faster then my crown so it gives me a wolf/heart shape.

      @@Ehlaar You're welcome, avoid pony tails for couple months if you can and see what happens. If you do wear your hair up you can do half up and leave the back out or you can put the nape hairs into small twist so you aren't straining them trying to get them all in one section. Merry Christmas.

      @@theegreendragonyeap, good advice! I keep my nape moisturized and I loosely pin it up with curved bobby pins when I wear a LOOSE high ponytail or updo. It's almost 7 inches long now. My nape used to stay dry and broken off.

    • @theegreendragon
      @theegreendragon 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@MT-yx5cu Niceeee, yea the nape and perimeter of the hair is typically the most fragile/thinner parts of the hair so it needs a different type of attention and approach. I can feel the tension and pulling even when I do a loose pull back and lay down on it. I just leave my hair out or keep it is mini twist most days and if it frizzes or shrinks its w.e, it hairs lol its alive and has a mind of its own. Idk how people band the hair 3 and 4 times in one, I get a headache. Also Twisting the nape and side burns and letting it out is a cute style option to, especially for women. It gives an Avant Garde look.

But ever since I moved back, everyone started from pretending to be excited for about a month, to constantly telling me my hair doesn't look "shiny" enough. My mom has gaslit me to tears telling me my hair is falling out. Fun fact, it's not. But it's like her brain just cannot compute. I try to explain that I don't want my hair to be covered in oil and and she literally CANNOT UNDERSTAND how that's possible. Thank you soo soo much for this video. I have been searching everywhere for anyone who believes as I do. That trimming your hair is not necessary. When I was a kid all the way up until a teenager, I never had a trim. My hair was never damaged, and I never got split ends. It wasn't until I started to go to beauticians that I got my hair trimmed because they said it was necessary. The black hair community has so much trauma behind our hair and how we take care of it. We allow outside influences to tell us what is beautiful about our own hair. Our natural way of taking care of our hair has had to be re-taught by African Americans because Europeans threw away our true African teachings and methods of how to care for black hair.

      @@twomisfithippies9790 Wow that stylist though. My experience was a little different. I dust less that 1/4" every 8 weeks and I retaining way more length and I don't get actual split strands . I feel 3/4" to be too much for 6-8 weeks. I find there was some misconception cause I was recommended 6-8 weeks too and only later learned that that was to MAINTAIN a hair CUT'S length and shape cause by that time it would have noticeably grown out of it(esp a shorter cut). Not because the strands had split or to aid in length retention, it was to keep the hair looking the exact same way. And somehow that transferred to the natural hair community and so many of us trying to grow hair unfortunately follow that. I started with 8 weeks in between then 9 weeks and so on, and I found 8 weeks to be my sweet spot when I had no slit strands and and few ssknots. When I maintained that I honestly cut about 1/8" cause it's so healthy😂. It got me cocky sometimes and I skipped several months in between cause i thought I need it anymore more. I would end up cutting 2-3" in one session meanwhile If I'm on schedule my dusting for the whole year totals around 1.5" in length. But others go longer without. Takes time to figure out what works best for you individually.

    I'm thinking (just my opinion) each follicle grows at different rates also many different factors affect our length, for me I sleep on my left more frequently and that side is shorter, even when i was relaxed, that side was stubborn therefore many factors are to be taken into consideration. Blunt ends aren't naturally akin to curly hair. You made a lot of great points thats most shy away from generally.

    What I learned through going through my own natural hair journey is that if I’m taking care of my hair (finger detangling, moisturizing my end, drinking a lot of water) then I don’t need to cut my end. The only time I cut my ends is when i leave my hair in cornrows for a long period of time or if I see split ends . My hair is now to the middle of my back now.

      They don't necessarily need to be cut even if they do. Hair naturally has some split ends. Indigenous Strandz has healthy, full knee length hair and she never trims and she said having a few splits is just a part of life....... People obsess over splits like an ocd nervous tick. Just moisturize everyday and stop obsessing and nit picking splits. Our culture never trimmed before being enslaved.... Most of us never even heard of it or adapted it culturally until the ivory people said to...

      I don't think you can say that people from the entire continent never trimmed their hair, esp. when we look at historical photos where some of the men have shorter but still elaborate hairstyles, which you must cut to maintain the shape of. However the reason for cutting may have been much different. But as long as the hair is healthy, a couple splits here and there won't damage it. And you can always do search and destroy to get splits and knots individually instead of cutting a whole lot at once. 😊@@PlusVK22

    1st, you are stunning 😍 2nd, there are so many points you've made that I wholeheartedly agree with. While I believe hair needs to be trimmed, I also believe the way we manipulate it sets the tone for why and how often. The more you're in it, the more often you'll need a trim. I think locs show us that unmanipulated hair will flourish.
    The largest part of your case that resonates is applying the Euro-standard to our natural hair. I've been natural my whole life, but it's only been the last 20yrs I've been heat-free and totally accepting of my curls. I was as addicted to my Marcel iron as many are addicted to relaxers. But, I've also had my whole life to "get" my hair. I think, subconsciously, many are still trying to make their hair "do" what their relaxed hair did. Hence the 50step wash routines, endless search for the best curl definer, all kinds of tricks to encourage the hair to lay "down" instead of "up" like it wants to. The whole obsession w length and curl definition, to me, is an extension of the Euro-standard.
    I had hair down my back most of my life and many don't understand why I keep it short on purpose. To me, there something is wrong w that mindset. Why can't I have beautiful short natural hair? But that's another topic! Loved the video 💕💚

    I last trimmed my hair in March, 2001, and I've only trimmed it twice since 1993. My hair grows incredibly slowly, so it always seemed really illogical to me to trim it, but until I was a teenager it wasn't really up to me. I have European wavy hair (around Type 2B to 3A) but I am also working through changing to natural hair care, because my entire life, my mother told me that my hair was straight and I've treated it as if it were straight. So I would have to brush my hair every 2 hours or it would look bushy because the waves tried to re-assert themselves. I would break hairbrushes in half or else snap the handle off while brushing because it took so much force to detangle my hair and make it look straight. Since I gave that up and began to follow natural hair care methods for my hair type (this was in 2021), my hair has finally grown past my elbows and is now past my tailbone if I pull is straight! I decided in 1986 that I wanted hair down to my waist or longer, and in 2023 it finally got there! I 100% agree that trimming hair is unnecessary. I wasn't sure about how other hair types would do if they weren't trimmed and I'm very interested to know that type 4C also does well with not being trimmed. So I'm pretty sure that it's a universal for all hair types. By the way, I think type 4C hair is absolutely beautiful. The ends of my hair are really thin, too, and tapered, and I think that's much prettier than a blunt, straight horizontal line. I never liked how even my hair was when I trimmed it. It never looked natural to me. I realize that what I need to do to prevent the curl from falling out of my fine, wavy hair when it is weighed down by water after I was it, is something that wouldn't apply to Type 4C hair which wants to coil, though I find that I can learn a lot by watching videos about Black natural hair, some of which I can apply to my hair type. My techniques involve apple cider vinegar rinses, finger detangling, drying hair in a T-shirt towel to prevent the curl from being weighed down, and boar bristle brushing once every 1-3 days instead of brushing with a detangling brush every couple hours. My idea is to use the gentlest possible methods for taking care of my hair so that I can retain each hair on my head for a longer amount of time, allowing it to get as long as possible before it is shed, and it really works! I really believe that there's absolutely no need for anyone to ever trim their hair unless they want to or unless they have not taken proper care of their hair...which isn't necessarily their fault if they don't know how to care for their hair type. I didn't even know about hair typing until I watched a video about the Crown Act...and then I wanted to discover my own hair type and learn how to better care for my hair...so glad that I did!

    Bravo, PreciousFro, these are exactly the words my soul needed today.
    My hair has not been trimmed in 1.5 years for the very reasons you outline in your video, and I have no plans to change that!
    It's unnecessary to trim your hair if you take excellent care of it! Low manipulation and plenty of moisture are the keys to success.
    My hair is always in mini twists, I deep condition and moisturise regularly, and I never use heat styling tools. Each SSK is clipped individually after I thoroughly examine my strands. As a result of this method, I have been able to retain so much length.
    When we are constantly gaslighted into believing our hair practices aren't good enough because they don't align with Eurocentric standards, hearing someone like you advocate for what actually works is very reassuring.
    Over the years, I have learned to take an intuitive approach to my own natural hair and that of my daughter. When growing and retaining hair takes what seems like eons, what is the point of cutting inches several times a year?
    Thanks for speaking up and validating us outsiders! I love your content ❤❤❤!

People who regularly get silk presses or who get their hair done regularly, they will have bone straight ends. But heat trained hair is also prone to more heat damage. This is the first video I've seen of yours and I absolutely loved your stance❤️ also... I've seen videos of people saying loose naturals should only trim their hair once or twice a year. I agree that most people are not truly looking at their ends to determine if they are truly split. Unevenness does not mean split. Even broken hair is not necessarily split hair. I'm also starting to believe that while splits should be cut, I don't think the pace at which splits travel up the shaft is as fast as we think it is I think we are imagining the hair to be like a split zipper.
    What I believe to be true is that a person has to be EXTREMELY diligent about their hair care to go without trims for a prolonged period of time. For the most part, I was on a 4 month schedule. I decided to test it out for myself and I was able to push it to nearly 6 months before determining I needed a trim. My hair does grow about 1/2 a month. I know because of gray new growth. I'm not weary of routine trims because I'm not going to outcut what I grow. I'm also not on a length retention campaign either.
    My ultimate point though is trim schedules are guidelines for how the average person cares for their hair. Not everyone is conscientious and diligent. Some are extremely conscientious.
    The question I do have is what's behind the desire to grow long hair? There is nothing wrong with having long hair but there is an intensity behind that desire for a lot of women that I'm left to wonder what they think long hair does or will do for them.

      Everyone is different and I think the same way people develop certain preferences and desires early on there are lots of things that push a lot (not all) women to develop a deep desire for long hair myself included but I also know a significant number of girls who love short hairstyles and can't stand to have hair past their shoulders.

    • @A_Wilson
      @A_Wilson 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s a personal preference. If a woman wants long hair, she doesn’t need to explain why to anyone. It’s her hair to grow and maintain as she pleases.

      @harmonious.balance 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      There are always reasons for personal preferences. Those reasons do not have to be shared. However as I said there is an intensity behind having long hair, for women of all ethnicities btw, that we don’t talk about but I do believe it can unlock some mental and emotional freedom for a lot of women.

    Sp the Lord and Saviour my soul Jesus Christ has spoken to me through the Holy Ghost. You know, I've been desiring to return natural for the past 2 year. Was praying about it then last month, The Holy Spirit gave me a go ahead.
    Then as i put down the hair journey hair care plan the Holy Spirit tells me not to ever trim my hair when i start out. Referencing me to Sampson. Then right now John the Baptist. Never should they trim their hair.
    Then today i come here then see this video on the exact thing.

    I only spliff my ends according to the moon phase maybe after 5 years, almost waist length. I've experienced breakage with over brushing even though I was only using bamboo brushes and combs. I admit handling my hair under great amounts of stress and being pressed for time has been dangerous. I put combs and brushes away and if I straightened it's once every other month when I wash it. Love your video ❤

    You are a God sent and so correct .. infact its not even after 3 months when my hair is cut the same time after it reverts the ends still looks thinner at the ends .. we need to know we are black and have textured hair even when mixed .. it doesnt have to be blunt thats a look not meant for our hair unless its a style we want .... God knows what He is doing is we care for our hair we dont need cut and even when i say this there are times i go back to that feel that i need to see blunt ots been told to us ao long... its so untrue our hair does what it wants no hair care should tell us we need accept who we are ..im back on a healthy journey we need accept ourselves God made us .. mindset is key
    Your hair is beautiful!! You look amazing! God made such beautiful women with such gorgeous hair .. we really need to accept ourselves and He does the rest ..

    Yes!!! Excellent points. This is what I have often suspected. In fact I have trimmed my thin, rough, tangly ends thinking that was a sign it was damaged, only to examine the cut ends under a magnifying glass and couldn’t find a single split end 😳 All was healthy hair. And it seems that long haired naturals have a similar thought on it. Y’all got the receipts so I will certainly take this advice!

      OK thank you cause when I see people talking constantly about split ends, I think are you actually taking a microscopic look at the ends?? Or are you just seeing uneven ends or curly ends and calling it unhealthy. Are people actually examining those ends?

      @@ladydulaneyI would say I have uneven hair that’s on my nape back area but would put my hair in buns pineapple style or sleep on my back to much. I’m taking care of it, washing and deep conditioning once or twice a month along with moisturizing plus grease. I’m a bit lazy but I try. I had long hair down my back as a teenager but started going to a stylist to get my hair done with a silk press and trim every 3 months but each time I go she’s like your hair is split and uneven. The front and crown grows faster than my back hair. I also sleep with a bonnet and scarf, I just read a comment on here about a person saying that was breaking her hair off in the back and she was seeing progress in not sleeping in those. I’ll have to test that out.

    Very enlightening! Since I think my stylist is actually trimming, not just "dusting," per my requests, your perspective has me reconsidering everything. Trimming is the sole culprit behind my hair plateauing in length (always near, but never past my bra strap) as my hair is VERY HEALTHY. I am a straight-natural, and unless my ends are totally shot, I'm considering reducing dusting to every six months, depending on the state of my ends. Thanks! P.S. Your hair looks GREAT!!

    THANK YOU!! this never made sense to me. to be honest brush detangling never made sense to me either. i just finger detangle. i don't expect it to be perfect. i know itll take about 3-4 washes by the time major knots are out. when i used a detangling brush it was always so harsh and indiscriminately ripping hairs. i just rely on gentle finger detangling over time and good water pressure and argon oil conditioner. (and i only shampoo the roots and protect the ends with conditioner). i'm much happier with my hair now.

    I never liked the thought of trimming my hair. When I was a child the beautician always “trimmed” more than she needed. IF I were to get my hat trimmed, it would be once a year and that’s not intentional.

    I don't believe in trimming either. I noticed people with the longest hair and us as children never trimmed. Trimming is a gimmick. Cut because you want to cut or you want it to be a certain length or style. The orginal natural hair was never trimmed. We need to use discernment skills. If you're hair is that bad off then maybe, but most people's hair is not that bad off to be doing that. I hate to bring up race but i keep thinking this was a tactic used to keep our women from our hair growing amongst other things.

    I definitely think there's some validity to this. I spent most of my adult life struggling to grow my hair, whilst simultaneously visiting hack-happy scissor wielding stylists who couldn't resist chop chop chopping my tresses whenever I sat in their chair. Since the pandemic tho, I've not been to a hairdresser and guess what? My hair is the longest it's been since childhood. And pretty healthy looking too! 😁

    Thanks so much for this. I haven’t cut my hair in maybe 3 yrs and I believe it was you I saw some time ago that inspired me to put the scissors down. ❤ My ends haven’t seen the light of day in years. I keep them moisturized and tucked either in ponytails, wigs and crochet styles. But I trimmed it because I felt like I HAD to due to the numerous TH-cam videos.
    So yes love, I will continue to use my spray bottle of water, I will continue moisturize with my Shea butter mix and I will continue to tuck my ends. Because it works for me. And thanks for pointing out the fact that people are saying break away from the trend but put natural hair back into a trend with scissors 🥰
