    I am an INFJ. I’ve always needed more sleep than most of the people I know. The hard part is that people tend to think I’m lazy or babying myself when I get extra sleep. So I’ll try to go on less sleep for awhile and become physically ill. I need to ignore others attitudes. They just don’t understand because they don’t need as much sleep. It is frustrating though.

      I wonder how many of us were told we were - or secretly thought to be - lazy because we just simply needed more sleep than the average person?
      Man, what an eye-opener!

      I can't stress how much I identify with these comments...my mind literally roars with thought while awake, it feels like I'm running about a thousand simulations whilst pondering the results... *exhausting* I have become less sensitive to criticism as I've gotten older, but it really used to sting 😪😴💤

      Same! I never understood how people could only go on 6 hours of sleep. It makes sense now that they are energized from being around other people and we get drained so we naturally need more sleep.

    I didn't know this was an INFJ thing. I thought it was just me. Worst part about sleeping is waking up lol. My life is always prioritized according to getting min 8, max 9/10 hours sleep. I can get more done than the average Joe with more sleep, but take it away, I can't do anything! Thanks for sharing.

    As an INFJ, when i'm tired and overstimulated, i usually end up in what i would term the 'zombie zone'. I mentally dont have the capacity to tell my body to do things...i'm literally that mentally exhausted that i cant figure out what i need to do - i'm looking at a pile of dirty dishes but i just cant process what my body needs to do lol Also need at least 8 hours of sleep or i'm more irritable and definitely struggle the next day!!

    I've actually been thinking about this concept quite a lot lately. If I'm being totally honest with myself, I think I legitimately need 8-10 hours of sleep each night as well. Which...is an incredibly frustrating concept for me because having to sleep that much just feels like a waste - there are SO MANY other things I'd rather be doing than sleeping...fun projects etc.
    Last year, I worked as a nurse assistant in a hospital and learned that the 12-hr night shift life is REALLY not good for my health. I desperately tried everything to make it work...even got moved to mid-shift (noon-midnight) and I STILL wasn't able to catch up on sleep appropriately between shifts.

I try to get up early to pray and help with him as much as possible, but I feel I physically can't do it unless I've slept for at least 8.5 hours! I also play basketball quite a bit which can be quite tiring. Thanks for this video!

    Put boundaries on my time...I like that. I need to do that because I don't seem to know when to take a break until I crash. If I'm already well rested, I do well with 8 hours and 15 minutes of sleep. If I'm sleep deprived or in any way drained, 10 is awesome but seldom doable.

  • @a.kenneth3521

    Thanks for the info. I’ve suspected there’s more to my need for a lot of sleep than simple physical tiredness. I knew there was a mental component, but it’s never been confirmed by my doctors. Even if I spend most of my day alone, the sensory input from my family, surroundings, TV, my own thoughts, wear me down. My sleep is a way to process all that ‘junk’ and wake up 10 hours later sort of prepared to start, again. What I’d really like, tbh, is a place to retreat for days at a time, with no outside input or pressure. I never fully recharge, no matter how much sleep I get.

    Used to work in a loud, fast-paced, hot, sweaty kitchen for 11-hour shifts and drink for 2 hours afterward, then go home and get maybe 5 hours of rough sleep. Then do it all again the next day, and the next, until I would just save all that pent-up exhaustion for the weekend, when half of each day would be spent asleep or in a daze. I'm so happy to have more energy now that I'm working an easier job.

I always wondered how parents can be so full of energy for their kids because I'm constantly tired asf just from normal life and I already feel like I do so much. My immune system is crap right now so I need more sleep. Depression has taken its toll on me. I'm going to make a big change next month and get my health back in check and after seeing this I will incorporate more sleep in my schedule 😃

    When I have dreams often, I have many dreams every night and they are all very long and usually interconnected. They are so detailed and thought out, it's like I'm actively thinking of how things would be step by step and how it would actually play out, so I feel that my brain is still using so much energy even while asleep. Perhaps this is another reason I need more sleep, and maybe other INFJs can relate to this. It's like my Ni and Ti goes wild when I'm asleep, and my Te and Fi are used against me to fuel the plots of my nightmares.

    • @bananabreadloaf
      @bananabreadloaf 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I just thought I was easily started for no reason. But it makes sense that it could be from a lack of sleep preventing one from focusing on their task And surroundings. So when focused on a task you lose awareness of your surroundings if you are tired or low on mental energy. I never get enough sleep so I’m always like this

    I don't sleep well due to stress from economic pressures in my life. However, I think that I could train myself to sleep more with a conscious effort of shutting down my mind, and I think that with practice, I could lengthen my average sleep time without waking in the middle of the night with a thousand thoughts racing in my head for hours at a time. I also have a habit of spending too much time on YT and FB. I will have to discipline myself to sacrifice my time in that form of entertainment.

      I have the same problem, I’ve been an insomniac my whole life, and used to stay up till the sun came up when I was little, or stay up for two days at a time regularly, not because I had the energy to but because I couldn’t sleep until I reached a point of extreme physical exhaustion. Sometimes I get so tired I’m stumbling around and slightly slurring my words, getting confused about details, and accidentally drop things more because of tiredness making my hands more uncoordinated. I’m worried people will think I’m drunk so I try to stay home when I’m on my second day of no sleep. I get headaches from it too

    INTP's very rarely get enough sleep. I wish I didn't have to sleep and just be productive all the time and focus on my projects. On some days I get very little sleep and then on other days I crash and all I want to do Is sleep. It's just too inconsistent and makes some days less productive. I do a problem saying no and deciding what to do or not do. If I work on that it will help alot. Increasing Sleep is important.

Do you think perhaps inferior Se (and therefore 8th slot Si) could contribute? I've also noticed INTJs tend to have sleep problems. Insomnia, in particular.

    Wow, this rings so true! When I was younger I made sure to get more and regular sleep. I went to bed nine hours before my clock would ring. I never fell asleep directly, but rather ruminated over the day for half an hour or so, but that was my routine/whst I was used to and belived normal so I wasn't botherrd by it. It was sort of scheduled awake processing time of my day I guess 😊 As a young adult that schedule went out the window I'm afraid, with more commitments, more studies, more parties, all things young adults are supposed to do... And I always feel sleep deprived. And often get mocked for my need to sleep more than the average person for example if I sleep in during the week ends, when I can sleep 12 hours straight if I didn't get enough sleep during the week! I'm 41 now so I've been sleep deprived for over twenty years! Time to prioritize and stand up for my need for more sleep! Than you for this video!

    YES! I have intuitively/instinctively known this about myself from earliest childhood. I was accused of "goldbricking" or being lazy when I just was experiencing my sensory and emotional circuits as fried! I'd get what felt like a buzz on: my ears would ring and I'd go almost mute verbally. A good night's sleep in terms of both length and quality could, and can, turn that completely around. I am day people, so I retire earlier than most people I know, but the benefits come the next morning are well worth it!

    I tend most strongly towards INFP with also strong aspects of INFJ and INTJ. I think probably best described as a very strongly introverted and highly sensitive INFP. I also find that I tend to do better on more sleep, but improving the consistency of timing my sleep has reduced the need somewhat. If I am unable to just sleep until I wake up (ie every work day) it is extra important to line up on a sleep cycle and not wake up mid-cycle (which will throw me off all day!) so, I usually end up at about 7.5 hours. Going to bed at the same time but sleeping as long as I feel like on the weekends 9 hours or more is much more common. If I had complete freedom in my schedule I wonder where I would end up?

I still have nightmares a lot, but not as many or as vivid as before I started smoking before bed. Also listening to calming music while asleep can help regulate your mood during sleep and calm the mind. I hope I was able to give you some useful ideas

    OMG, thank you for this video. I'm INFJ, I need 9.5 hours of sleep to feel great. If I get less than 4.5 hours of sleep, I become angry all day. The more sleep I get, the more alive and aware I feel when I wake.
    I've noticed that by sleeping a lot, I have more vivid dreams and can control my dreams better. I also have a greater command and ability to focus my subconscious better, which leads to better intuition. My INTJ father would probably sleep 10-11 hours a day, if allowed. My INTJ brother has insomnia and gets noticeable anxiety when sleep deprived. My intuition is terrible if I'm sleep deprived. I've studied so much neuroscience to find out why I sleep so much...perhaps too much prefrontal cortex use trying to predict the future is exhausting. The mindfulness movement suggests that living in the moment, makes you more aware and less tired...but I get so bored with living in the present moment, that I always start thinking of the future...millions to billions of years out. I was 1 of the 3 children in my elementary class who could delay gratification and wait another 5 minutes to get a promised 2nd candy if I could wait and not eat the first candy given immediately. I was also 99% on math scores in elementary. I would try to sleep 10 hours a day back then when I was a kid.
    Also, my immune system declines if I don't get a good amount of sleep, and I'll pick up colds and flus much too easy.

    I think that I normally need around 8 hours but I think that we also need to factor in time before sleep when we can decompress/process the massive amount of information we've been bombarded with throughout the day. Sometimes I feel overstimulated which makes it hard to fall asleep, so then I end up getting less than the ideal amount. I Can operate on less sleep for extended periods of time, ie when going to school and working at the same time or working 60-70 hours per week but if I keep pushing myself I will a) become a huge b*$&# and b) probably get sick or both.

    I used to be a heavy sleeper, but as I have aged, I go to bed later and I find it difficult to sleep more than 6 hours at a time. Have started napping during the day. I think that my huge interest in learning new things is keeping me up beyond the time I should be sleeping, as I sometimes find myself nodding off during an interesting you tube video. So, starting now I am going to go to bed 8 hours before dawn. (I normally wake up just before sunrise, in spite of blackout curtains. It will be interesting to see what happens!

      It’s normal for older people to have a hard time sleeping long enough. That’s why a lot of really old people, like in nursing homes, get up so early. Not because their generation likes to get up early, but because the body has a harder time staying asleep as long with age. So it makes sense what you’re saying, I hope you are able to get more sleep

    what? i sleep 6-3 hours a day without feeling tired. Am i not an infj?
    (english is my third language, please excuse my grammar errors)
    i am 17 years old, and usually spend 8-10 hours at school and spend another 5-8 hours just drawing in a day, even on weekends i would spend around 17 hours drawing. i desperately want to be an professional artist. i already found myself wasting my first 15 years of my life playing games and i don't want to waste my time anymore.
    Why i sleep such hours a day: At the age of 15 i considered myself an atheist and i would always wonder how the christian have this power and energy. a year later and i belief that it was because of 'fear' or ''fear of death'(probably not the right term but whatever) and i tried using that fear against myself. I don't know how but i tricked myself into believing that i would not live longer than 35 years.i literally cannot drop that belief anymore. i have to achieve all of my life goal before 35... i already wasted 15 years...
    i get depression very often and there is a chronic hole in my heart. a tight hug is all what i need.
    i have 2 people that i can call as friends, i care about other people, and i would listen to them, show love and support, i would even sacrifice for a stranger. on the outside i call them "friends" but inside, i do not feel any connection whatsoever. if i find them wasting my time, i would instantly leave them. i feel like there are 17 people (as far as i can think) that are considering me as their friend.

    If not infj, what personality type do i fall into...

    It has been the bane of my existence not being able to sleep, all my life I have struggled to sleep up to and including this day , I have to take heaps of medication to be able to sleep, I used to drink very heavily, now I just take sleeping tablets and loads of antihistamines, it sucks. This is a priority that a lot of people do not seem to understand, your sleep is a priority then your critical thinking skills will come into play and you will realise, that the things you thought were a priority before , are not . Your happiness , health and that of your family are the priority, being honest with your self is important, then you can set your boundary's, do you need to sleep to do your job or is your job important as to where you want to sleep. If you do not care for societal expectations, go live in a tent. People work for their cars and their homes , one of those things you drive around in and the other you sleep in , they need to be a service to you not you to them.

    • @bananabreadloaf
      @bananabreadloaf 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should not take the antihistamines for sleep, prolonged use of antihistamines can cause damage to the central nervous system. They may be over the counter meds, but they are actually really serious medicine. Instead you can try motion sickness medicine, it has a side effect of making you so sleepy you can’t stay awake, with just one pill of it. They make non drowsy ones now, but get the ones that Do Not say non-drowsy and they will knock you out in 30-45 mins. I’m a terrible insomniac and I can also never sleep in a car, but I had to take these pills for motion sickness in cars or I’ll throw up on road trips, I took them before they invented the non-drowsy. You can get them in the medicine section at most stores, but I got mine in the medicine section of Oriley auto parts. But please don’t take antihistamines for anything other than actual pollen allergies! And never more than the recommended dose.

      You ladies are are correct with saying that it's the duties of fatherhood and not seen as another task to be done.However, I do believe he was trying to use the terminology to express that although he wanted to get more sleep (a choice,) he knew he had obligations to fulfill with daily life (being a father) and that he is empathic towards his wife getting less sleep for whatever number of reasons (i.e. being more sensitive/responsive to their child even while asleep than he may be.) I feel he did his best to not undermine her contributions but possibly instead recognized them by mentioning them. In addition, I'm sure he wanted to keep the video positive while maintaining his message he wished to share with us all. This is not an attack, just offering a different perspective.

      @@Danielleanderson428There's always perspectives. ALWAYS.
      My take on the video, having watched plenty of Bo's videos in the past, is that he has difficulty expressing himself correctly sometimes, and this was one example of that, and that the intention was to recognize his responsibilities to his wife and child as a contrast to his experiment to get more sleep.

    Question: How accurate is the MTBI test. What is it's biggest strength? Are there other models to evaluate personality? If so, how can they complement or enhance our understanding of our personalities?
    I'll leave these questions for anyone to ponder as I think they are important to consider.

      In my experience and research it is a useful tool for understanding that people have various different thought processes and do not process the world in the same way, but not very generally useful for slotting one's self into an identity box.

      @@dirtywhitellama I don't know if this is a problem but, I find it hard not to identify with the INFJ. It really resonates with me when i study the personality. I don't know if im getting some pysched up influence by the description (like and horoscope), but it is quite more deep than an horoscope. I find myself nodding inside with understanding when i read about it. It kind of feels like the way my mind works.

    • @dirtywhitellama
      @dirtywhitellama 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@evelic I totally understand. I felt that way a lot reading many of the things about INFJ (although in my case I later realized that INFP was a better fit when I understood Fi - and Si - a little better) It was actually really comforting to realize certain things were just the way my mind works, as opposed to something being 'wrong' with me. And that I legitimately do think differently than the majority of other people out there. Absolutely use it to understand yourself better, if you're into learning that stuff check out the socionics stuff, I like the Dave's Super Powers channel too although some of his stuff doesn't seem to completely match (But his definition of Fi is what clicked for me, so a lot of it is useful, too!)
      Just don't be locked into thinking you have to fit into the box of what an INFJ looks like, even if you draw many similarities and gain a lot of self understanding from studying the ideas. That's the point I'm trying to make. You may have personality aspects that don't seem to 'fit', and that's ok. One explanation I read that made a lot of sense for me, puts the personality types more like landmarks than boxes. So, my personality would be located by saying "I'm pretty close to INFP, but INFJ and INTJ are nearby, too". That works for me. Ultimately, you have to decide what works for you, too :)
