@@cloverlucky5977 Wick probably wouldn't have known it came from a coffin. Booze was hidden anywhere the feds weren't likely to try searching, like under floorboards or in walls. Coffin varnish is specifically slang for booze that may as well be actual poison because of how awful it is. The 'real McCoy' is also slang named after a rum runner who brought in a lot of great alcohol, but it's used as a general term for authentic stuff, whether McCoy brought it or not
Atlas is the cat in the painting and Ms. M's husband. The mystery black cat you're interested in is Mordecai. Ivy, the girl fixing the car, is somebody that he used to know, which is why he didn't shoot in the end. "Sentimental about old times". It'd be super interesting if you guys checked out the comic

You guys missed the final joke. After the credits after the post-credit scene, it has a couple stills showing that the businessman at the bar was the owner of the quarry. Meaning it was his stuff Rocky blew up!

You actually can catch the joke before then as well, as there's a sign that Rocky ended up making them drive through which stated that the quarry belonged to Mr. Sable (The aforementioned businessman)

One fun detail I noticed is that when Rocky is looking for a gun in the car you can see that he throws around 2 pancakes and an empty syrope bottle.I think its a nod to the comic where Rocky's favourite food are pancakes
I couldn’t see it myself but someone mentioned a cactus in the car as well.
It's also a reference to the fact that he lives in that car. One of the comics shows that all that stuff is his. :p

The sketch lines are definitely intentional. As an artist I can tell you for certain, that's the kind of thing that would have to be done on purpose since sketches are typically on an entirely separate layer. It would honestly be even more work to keep those in on an occasion during animation like they have done here.
It's a nice effect that really emphasizes that it's all hand drawn (aside for some of the 3D stuff they used).
I believe that they said that someone would add those lines over the finished animation afterwards
The cool thing about Mordecai (the black cat with the pistol) being voiced by SungWon Cho is that he first started getting popular on TH-cam under the ProZD label through fandubs of the Lackadaisy webcomic. In a way, he's kind of gone full circle.
Important to note: the webcomic's been running since 2006. If they had the funding, a series could go for a very long time.

@darker It's a continuous story. The main story is only 174 pages, so you can binge the whole thing in a day or three. There are a lot of mini-comics and art pieces as well.
@@arcticbanana66 Just a heads-up to anybody going in, though... 174 pages means 174 updates, many of which are very long and detailed. In a book, it winds up being way more than 174 pages, but it's totally worth the read anyway. The side comics are a lot of fun too. Highly recommended!

@@samnuell864 If anything it's the opposite, this animation is kind of spoilers for the comic, as it's based on events that are fairly current in the comic (though they altered them significantly from what actually happened, specifically to avoid major spoilers).

it's SO funny to hear SungWon Cho as mordecai because the only thing I knew him from was press buttons and talk and his old vines. lmao. He's really grown into the game though, good for him! His voice acting is phenomenal, and his voice fits mordecai *so* well!

To give a brief rundown, considering they asked if there was more at the end.
Lackadaisy is a webcomic, started in 2006 by Tracy Butler. It tells the story of the Lackadaisy speakeasy, which used to be the biggest illict gin joint in the city, until the death of it founder, Atlas May, who was killed under mysterious circumstances. It is now run by his grieving widow Mitzi, who is trying to hold the business together, even after most of the staff and patrons left after the death of Atlas. One of the cats who left was Mordecai, a ruthless hitman, and Atlas' right hand cat, who while loyal to Atlas, was not loyal to Mitzi, or even Lackadaisy itself, and he now works for one of Atlas' chief rivals. Asa Sweet.
In 2020, a kickstarter was founded, to attempt to fund an animation for Lackadaisy, which had long been a goal of it's creator. Originally having an $85,000 funding goal, the project would go on to make well over $330,000, and the scope was increased from what was originally planed to be a roughly 8 minute long short film, to a fully fleshed out, 27 minute pilot.
And over 3 years later, with the help of around 160 animators, that is what we have today. =3 Cheers.

Lackadaisy was a comic from years ago, i think 2017 was when i first started reading it. Im so proud of the team!!
I think the comic itself started back in like 2006 or 2007... so yeah, this is definitely a blast from the past, and a welcome one
It started in 2006. Curious, I recently counted -- there's like 174 "chapters" on the comic website (which is more than I would have guessed!). Originally Tracy was putting out chapters that were about a Sunday comic in length. In later years, more time went by between updates, but the updates were longer, multiple pages worth of comics.
The visible line art was an intentional stylistic choice to make the pilot look like old hand drawn animation (xerox era Disney specifically)
21:23 other people noticed this in the pilot this too, Mitzi might’ve learned a thing or too from Atlas on how to do that smooth pouring, to be a graceful, smooth host for a supposed seedy establishment he owned before passing it onto her in the case that he dies.
The best part about the pilot is all the little things, the reflections, cat noises, the ear and tail twitches, so much more!
Freckle has to be my favorite because he's such a gentlemen until he gets a gun.
I highly recommend reading the comics, it explains a lot in the pilot.
Atlas is dead, killed in a drive-by the year prior. The guy on the phone is Asa Sweet, he owns a rival speakeasy. I'd reccomend reading the first three pages of the webcomic as an intro to the series.
In case you dudes didn't know Lackadaisy is a pretty established IP that's been around since 2006. I got into it recently this year due to the trailer and been hooked ever since, I've reread the comic by Tracy J. Butler ten times and let me tell you the woman seriously knows her 1920s history and put so much well-researched into her characters & setting of this cat lawbreaking series. I'm happy for the Lackacrew for bringing this pilot to life and hopes it lead to greater opportunities down the line. 🙌🏾

The sketch lines being visible was intentional, it's reminiscent of the hand-drawn animation from the time period the story takes place.
Everybody keeps missing the second small after credit images. Mr. Sable (the guy at the end of the bar) owns the mining site that Rocky destroyed and he is a little...shocked...at how much damage there was, his face is great
Not of the animation of the time (they'd look a lot like Steamboat Willy if that was the case) but definitely that of an earlier style than today's.
The animation is based on the Lackadaisy web comic, several parts draw from the comic and I assume a majority of the story boarding was stitching the pages together in a cohesive and exciting story without straying to far from the source material.
Obviously, there's a lot of comic, and it's been years since I read most of it, but -- I'm pretty sure that none of what we see in this half-hour show draws *directly* from the comic itself. That is, they didn't pick an episode or two from the comic and animate it. This is a new "story" written and boarded just for this project. Which makes sense! This had to be very introductory, and it accomplishes that pretty deftly. But the comic made all of its introductions much more slow-paced. They wrote something new, in order to tailor it to the kind of introduction needed given that this was going to be seen by so many people who'd never read the comic before.
@@gryphonvert yeah I get what you mean. I guess I was trying to say is that it draws very closely from some of the comic pages. One scene from the comics was right in the beggining we have Rocky's poem on the bridge over the Mississippi river. Later we have another similar scene to the comic when we first see Ms. Mitzi, she's reading an obituary like in one of the first comic pages when Ivy tells Rocky that Ms. Mitzi was so down about finances that she was reading the obituaries for entertainment.

This pilot may be 7 years (though it says 3 years in the official website) in the making, but the OG comic Lackadaisy started back in 2006. The more detailed-looking photographs you saw scattered in the credits are how detailed the characters were drawn in the comics compared to their animated counterparts.
So if you like the voice of rocky, michal kovach voices a main character in Murder drones and the guy who made cliffside is the creative person behind it. Also I just love the cat antics in this, like the twitches of annoyance

That's as much as i can really say to avoid spoilers in case this show gets more eps
~ Atlas May founded the Lackadaisy speakeasy at the onset of Prohibition, opening the Little Daisy cafe above as a front, and hired a roving group of musicians (including Rocky, Zib, JJ, and a few others) to perform for patrons. Mitzi was a dancer for the troupe who caught Atlas' eye and the two were married soon after. But bootlegging is dangerous business and Atlas died under mysterious circumstances. (There are rumors that Mitzi may have been involved in Atlas' death.)
~ Asa Sweet (from the post-credit scene) opened the Marigold speakeasy about the same time. Lackadaisy and Marigold originally had an amicable relationship but, as the feds cracked down, they soon became rivals in trying to obtain the best booze for their respective establishments.
~ Viktor Vasko and Mordecai Heller helped Atlas build his bootleg empire as runners (procuring booze) and enforcers (eliminating competition). Lacking Mordecai's subtlety, Viktor has had quite a few close calls in the line of duty - between losing his right eye, his left knee being all but destroyed, and countless other injuries, he's none too happy about being relegated to tending bar. Lackadaisy began to founder following Atlas' death and Mordecai saw no future for the establishment, so he eventually accepted one of Marigold's lucrative (and repeated) employment offers.
~ Ivy Pepper worked as cashier and waitress for the Little Daisy cafe and quickly became Atlas' goddaughter; though he set her up with a full 'scholarship' and she occasionally does attend her college classes, she's far more interested in the glamorous world of bootlegging. As the speakeasy's resident jazz-baby, anyone and everyone affiliated with Lackadaisy would make it their mission in life to utterly destroy anyone who dared harm her. (Viktor assumed the position of Ivy's godfather after Atlas died. Not only is Mordecai well aware of this, but he is uncharacteristically somewhat fond of her himself - which explains why he refused to shoot her, as well as Viktor's reaction to Ivy's flirting with Freckle.)
~ Nicodeme and Serafine Savoy are transplants from New Orleans, hired by Asa Sweet as hijackers and enforcers for Marigold. While Asa and Mordecai both detest the pair (each for their own reasons), they're simply too good at their jobs to consider letting go.
~ Calvin "Freckle" McMurray is Rocky's cousin who aspired to become a police officer. Unfortunately, he tends to become nearly as unhinged as Rocky when he has a gun in his paws. Nina McMurray, Freckle's mother and Rocky's aunt, is a devout Irish Catholic who is none too pleased with Rocky's galivanting and even less pleased with his influence on her son. (Fortunately for both of them, she simply cannot imagine her son being involved with peddling the Devil's elixir - though she's not quite so certain about her nephew.)
~ Sedgewick "Wick" Sable is a mining magnate - his head full of rocks, though of a very different sort than those in Rocky's head. (That was his quarry which was all-but destroyed in the pilot.) A long-time patron of Lackadaisy, he envisions himself as something of Mitzi's off-white knight.

The animated pilot wasnt in development for 7 years, it began development in 2020, Lackadaisy is an indie webcomic that started in 2006, so the patreon livestreams from 7 years ago were for drawing the comic, not the animation
I've only seen one reactor notice that the news article was code for where the drop-off was located. The code bits were even marked in red and summarized at the bottom.
This is actually based on a long-running webcomic of the same name - I remember reading it as it was coming out back in the day. Lost track of it after a long hiatus, but it seems they've been busy. Glad it's getting some good exposure - the comic was fun and the animation is great. Hope it makes it like Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss.
I think I remember reading that now that the pilot is done, the hiatus should be over soon!
This made me so incredibly happy when I saw you guys reacted to this!! I have really been obsessing about this pilot for the last few days. I LOVE the animation, background, style, the sound design! It's so good!
And as of the characters, sometimes you just find characters in certain places that just speak to you. And Rocky, from the opening scene I just knew I loved him. And for good or bad(on my part lol), the rest of the pilot as well as the comic I read just last night, just solidified it.
But all the characters are so solid, and I really really hope this pilot becomes a series. I could, and have watched their animation so many times. It's so masterful and captivating!
All their hard work is 1000% shown in this. So much heart, talent, and work so beautifully displayed.
It captured the comics perfectly, yet is quite different in a lot of ways. The years they put into this...I can't credit this enough!
Edit: And I must add, just for myself! The pacing and the details are so good! Details in the world, the characters. The pacing feels... grounded I think. Even with some unhinged characters, that are cats, they feel grounded in a real world.
The story as well, it has so much to it, and they managed to capture it in just under 30 min. To me, it didn't feel too little or too much. It had quiet and fast moments as the story seemed to just naturally progress. But the world never felt too much or too little.
As I said, I cant gosh enough about this.
This is based on a webcomic and holy shit the references I've found after starting reading it, in this short 20 odd minute pilot... Rocky did not steer the car into Mr. Sable's quarry on accident. Hitting the sign instead of going through the gate was on purpose too.
I have been a fan of the comic since it's beginning, and I'm definitely in love with this short film. The events is separate from the comic, so that's new adventures to witness for me! So glad you guys are watching this! I can't wait for more "episodes".
Lackadaisy is actually a webcomic that has been running for years before this. This Pilot started off as a Kickstarter so they could make an Animated short, but they smashed their goal and went beyond and decided to aim for a full-on pilot to hopefully get a series running.
Fun Fact about the dapper fellow Wick AKA. Mr. Sable 23:51 he is the proprietor of the Quarry where Rocky went on his explosive rampage in 10:20. I haven't read the comic personally but it definitely seems that Rocky doesn't like Mr. Sable that much, he really enjoyed destroying his property.
One of Rocky's first jobs was at the circus. Just remembered that this is fact from Webcomic.

Mordecai Heller, the black tuxedo cat, used to be a member of Lackadaisy but went over to Marigold after Atlas's death. Turns out, he's a fake defector and only decided to work for Mr. Sweet so he could see if he was involved with Atlas's death. Check out more of Heller's backstory. It's really sad.

I haven’t seen this be mentioned but this project actually started 3 years ago! This was entirely funded through Kickstarter and it blew past their initial goal in less than half a day. All the videos in the Lackadaisy channel before that period was for the webcomic ☺️ It was created nearly 20 years ago and has quite a devoted fanbase.
So there is definitely already enough story there (this pilot actually covers somewhere past the start of the webcomic), but in terms of any storyboarding or production for future episodes, they’re probably not that far into it.
Lackadaisy already has helluva beat in several ways. For one, it has good characters lol

Fun fact! The voice of Rocky is actually the same voice actor who voiced Angel Dust in the Hazbin Hotel pilot! Unfortunately Micheal left Hazbin Hotel for Lackadaisy and other projects
Yall are the first people I've seen who noticed something behind Ivy before the shootout!
What amazed me the most was the sound design. Everything sounded real. The car, the dynamite, the doors.
I love that there is just enough cartoon magic that it doesn't feel contrived when people survive falls or just barely avoid danger, but enough realism that it it still feels like there's high stakes.

Sadly enough the comic is no where near done. They took a big hiatus to work on this animation pilot. They should be getting back to it now they got this finally out the way. Because a lot of this have references to the comic but it didn't follow the comic story just the premise of it around it.
I can give you more info. This is the pilot there will be a season 1. The artist behind this is named Tracy she has a webcomic and season 1 will fallow the webcomic. They arent giving this to a big company they are just doing this on youtube cause she doesnt want to sign over the rights and she doesnt want them to just archive the show for a tax write off or some crap. By giving her money she says it will go to all the voice actors and animators and anyone else to be paid for their work. They have murch at the murch store like plushies, T-Shirts and sweaters and more

I absolutely adore Lackadaisy! The moment I heard Rocky Serenade the Mississippi River I felt my Heart melt. I feel that Rocky is the one I relate to with the most due to his love of Poetry, Music and Art. That and his maniacal shenanigans when he gets a stroke of mad genius. I’m so happy the Pilot finally released. I love the decision to leave the Roughs of the Animations in because it preserves the characters Vibrance and Personality. The Pilot and The Comics have inspired me to return to my own Art and strive to hone my skills so that I can bring my own creations and projects to life. With how good the Comics and the Pilot are it deserves to become a full series. And until we get more the comics are still ongoing so we have that to hold us over. I’m so excited for the future! 😻

They reached their first goal 11 minutes after the backerkit launched, but that's just for episode 1. It's still a long way from funding the whole season.

I highly rec the comic to y'all for having liked this so much, and the dubs they put on the Lackadaisy channel.
And Iron Circus Animation is a new thing for a publisher called Iron Circus Comics that has some other good indie titles and volumes that they've put out as well as having picked up Lackadaisy Cats.
I've been a fan of Lackadaisy for ages and I really hope they can pick up enough interest to do more of the animation, (though also hope the comic itself picks back up lol, it's been on hiatus a bit.)
So they did a Backerkit fundraiser for a Lackadaisy 5-7 episode series in July-August and raised well over the intended amount: instead of $125,000, they raised $2,000,000, which means everything is funded as well as mini-episodes. I think it broke records. They do a good job of keeping us up to speed on how it's moving along, same as they did with this pilot, and it's clear it's not a rip-off like so many other Kickstarters can be. 28:00 That's based on a web comic I've started reading a decade and half ago. That's not exactly a brand new, generally speaking.
I like that you took notice of the line art under the characters. I think it was intentional, because it’s cake to clean that up with computers nowadays. But it is reminiscent of the old Disney movies right after they switched to the Xerox method of copying the drawings directly to celluloid. A lot of the guidelines bled through. That was a glitch, but they embraced it as part of their style. Those particular movies actually have much crisper lines than previous ones, and show off details like skin wrinkles, and hair.
Lackadaisy seems to be giving off Don Bluth vibes. Like it has that charm that feels similar to it.
It just got 2 million from its crowdfund campaign for a full season 1! Also it has been a comic from like 2006 but I guess people are finding out with the pilot 🤭
This feels like a *real* show compared to other TH-cam Pilots. Plus it's got charm, and it's does VERY well with its characters in the short time it has. Unlike some... Other, pilots.

Well considering its an animated adaptation of a. 17 year long web comic it SHOULD feel like an actual show since it has 17 years to build its story thus more time can be put else were

this was a comic before they made it into the first episode so, I think its been in development for like 2 or 3 years maybe more, but the comics been around for like 16 I think?

Yeah I was following this person on DA back when I was going to college. One of the fellow grads made an animation of Rocky for their finished piece. That was... longer than seven years. A lot longer. Hoping this thing takes off.

This is based on a comic, so a lot of the material was already there. I think they spent years just trying to get the animation to the best it can be.
I remember when getting two pages of the comic in a month was cause for celebration, now they're just casually flexing.
