    A few more interesting facts about wispmothers not covered in this video:
    They are not alive but they are also not undead. Casting the spells Detect Dead or Detect Life will not reveal them. All spells that affect the dead have no effect on Wispmothers - Turn Undead, Vampire's Bane, etc.
    They are friendly to Falmer. There is a Wispmother in Blackreach, but if you lead Falmer or Chaurus into her territory, she will not attack them and they will not attack her. They all band together as a team to bring you down. I think this strongly supports the theory that they are Snow Elves.
    The name "Aumriel'" is an Elven name, derived from Auri-El the chief god of the Snow Elves.

      Could she just be an elemental being like atronochs? Not really alive or dead either or maybe some kind of snow elf guardian spirit.

      Sounds like a Nirvana state, which seems to coincide with the Buddha-like statue the Snow Elves built to hold the Eyes of the Falmer. Neither living nor dead. Perhaps they were saints in pursuit of cheating death (as the Ayleids had liches and the Dwemer tried to break reality), and they found it - but the revelation of its insignificance and price drove the "Enlightened" mad.

    Dont know if it is related. But up here in scandinavia we have a myth about the so called "bog woman".
    She is usually discribed as an old woman stirring a huge cauldron where fog and mist comes from. They also have small "Lampmen" who appears as small lights to lure travelers into the bog mothers fog never to be seen again. Maybe a bit of inspiration?

      @Toxin___InterHalfer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Russian here, we have some legends about the 'wandering lights'/'demon lights' at the swamps, no women leading them though, just the souls of the dead who confuse travellers and hunters or guard the cursed treasures

      ScarletRedCrimson The fact that this is a Scandinavian legend makes it likely that they inspired the wisp mother, considering Skyrim has obvious Scandinavian inspirations.

    I don't remember ever being attacked by the Wisp's, until I actually would find the Wispmother. I've ran into a lot of them in my playthroughs, too. I do remember them somewhat following me. They'd stop following quickly though. Even then, they usually wouldn't attack me anyway, even when I am killing the mother. Maybe it just glitched on me every time?

      Rena Ami Akai yeah, it was like that with me too. Wisps seem to be really common, but the Mothers are nowhere to be found. Maybe the Wisps act like scouts for the Mother? Or it could just be really weird AI design.

    • @ChronoTriggerHappy
      @ChronoTriggerHappy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wispmothers themselves are high level spawns, meaning you wont see them at all except for the few unique spawns, unless you are a high level (like around 30), the wisps on the other hand are fairly low level and can spawn without the wisp mother being there.

    • @renaxakai3
      @renaxakai3 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tend to play one character to at least level 80. Most of my characters are over that, except my most recent ones who have only been played for certain quests. So, I should have seen more mothers than I have. Could probably count them on 2 hands with my 300+ hours.

  • @rasplez9889

    an interesting theory i thought about: maybe the dwemer ARE the constructs? i always found it weird that soul gems powered them. not just a conventional power source, but full, living souls. then it hit me... the dwemer put themselves into the constructs to live forever and guard their ruins. they never vanished, because they've been there all along. the rank of a dwemer also allocated to its construct. for example, maybe a high value member of the dwemer was given control of the centurions, soldiers as the spherical guardians, and lowborn workers as spiders. it doesn't make sense for a technologically advanced race that rejects magic and god's, to suddenly disappear and everyone's reaction is "maybe they performed a ritual or used a special type of magic". the only magic they used was to stop their structures from decaying, allowing them to stand strong for millions of years. apart from that, they rejected all other forms of magic, and instead focused on physical sciences like astronomy, architecture, industrialization, and physical magics such as soul gems, and applying magic to items like the cubes to store their history, technology and astrological findings. Any other theory as to why they disappeared, doesn't fit their ideology.

    Love how you get real up close and just let us -see- the monsters you discuss. So many people do nothing but spawn a ton of them and fight them while talking about such monsters. The Wispmothers really do have a rather unique design compared to elves, but I never noticed in-game because everything was moving too fast.

    The story of the woman who last her daughter sounds like a quest line the development team either dropped or forgot about and never finished. Similar to that lost gold mine. As if you were suppose to find the miners friend who abandon the mine and tell of his friends true demise. So maybe if this theory were true you were suppose to find the bones of the daughter bring it back to the Wispmother and lay both to rest.

    Personally, I think they are elementals, like Spriggans. I am hoping wisps are just cores imbued with magic, kind of like spells or conjured creatures, who also end abruptly when the caster dies. Otherwise, if they are previous victims, I would worry that, if I don't "free" them by killing them individually first, and instead make them all disappear by killing the Wispmother, that I might be trapping their souls forever, (think other realm hell like in Dawnguard quest line), or even condemning them to non existence. I think the snow elves theory is BS.

    And how nereids hold domain over the many bodies of water

    Sounds like the Angel Makers of Scandinavia. These were women who would buy children from poor mothers and promise to take them to a good home. In fact, they'd simply drown the children in a marsh. The children's spirits, called Mylings, were said to haunt the marshes as they couldn't get to the afterlife...
    And in writing this, I've just realised something-what if the wisps are Mylings? That's dark.

    My question is why so many elemental beings resemble females (spriggian, fire atronarch, wispmom) or are just vaugly humanoid blobs (ice atronarch, storm atronarch, flesh atronarch, and that big fire elemmental thingy with three faces)

    Could they be something similar to the Dragon Priests, only without willing people to keep them alive? Cuz that could explain why the Pale Lady would abduct children, as they would not only be easy to coerce but would most likely be a good source of life energy. And the wisps would be the remaining husk, changed to take on a form more suited to protecting the Mother. Which would make sense why the Mother dies of the Wisps do, as she wouldn't have anything to draw life energy from. Just an idea.

    this is an awesome video. I agree that they maybe some sort of Lich. but is it possible they are snow elfs, some sort of higherarchy. they hover like dragon priests which leads me to believe they are a sort of ruler to the snow elfs. the wisps could be the souls of her people. I know it's a far stretch but I like to believe it

    are these SE only? I played multiple runs of LE and never once ran into one of these. within first 10 levels of SE I found a whip trail and followed the pretty ball of light......to my doom..... wasn't expecting that lol

    I remember this one time when I was traveling and I found a shit ton of Wisps. Since I was playing with my stealth archer, though, I was able to repeatedly cast Invisibility on myself and just watch them float around.
    Also, maybe the reason the Wisp Mothers attack you is because they *are* Snow Elves who, because of the genocide on their species, attempt to enact vengeance on any warrior they see.

    I know the video is much older,bu even 7 years ago,it was pretty messed up to gender someone based on their exterior.These whispmothers could very well identity as a different gender than their appearance would suggest.Be more sensitive!

  • @avatariroh0543
    @avatariroh0543 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I bet they are Falmer. The whole part with the ancient Nords makes it even more likely. The Wispmothers like to use frost magic. Snow Elves=Frost magic (maybe).
