I have never been in a Wet Her Spoon, and I never will. To help a very rich cretin, who supported Brexshite, to stay in business, I'll leave that to the racists.
Hungry Horse, they annoyed me, by NOT using just FOUR letters.
"MT GG" as a title would be much more humorous, and individual.
If I want fish and chips, I buy ONLY from my local specialist F&S shop.
WHY? Because both of your fake "restaurants" only provide crude malt vinegar, no spirit vinegar, no wine vinegar. Malt vinegar is OK if you don't have a trained palate, but in order to actually TASTE the food, you need a softer, smoother vinegar. I may come across as a bit of a snob, and not a racist, but I don't really care.

You should have noticed that Hungry Horse just say 'Fish & Chips' not 'Cod & Chips'. That's because they use Basa fillets instead of Cod which is how they keep the price right down.

Hello from Super-windy Los Angeles 🙋‍♀️
If it was a beauty contest, Wetherspoons batter was gorgeous. But my vote goes to Hungry Horse only because you said the fish is more like a chip shop fish in flavour.
I like a lot of vinegar as well, and chip shop batters seem to stay crisp under copious amounts of vinegar.

I've only been to a Hungry Horse just the once & I was pleasantly surprised.
Never had any complaints when I've had fish & chips at Wetherspoons - maybe the batter was a bit thick & the fish was put into the fryer when the oil is too hot - your fish kind of looked like that.
    Can't beat Wetherspoons chips.
    You describe them perfectly.
Fish at HH looked so much more appetising - batter colour was perfect & the gish looked moist & tasty.
I think you were right awarding the win to HH.
Thank you for posting & sharing.
I'm housebound, I really miss going out for bar food.
It gives me a feeling of being there, see what's going on.
    Really enjoy your vlogs.
    Looking forward to many more.

Hungry Horse has to win at the price as both meals seemed similar. Fish looked better at the Horse, but chips looked better at Spoons. Free refills on the tea at Spoons is also a bonus.

That would have been the very last time I went to any Wet Her Spoons. Actually, I am very proud to say that, as I approach my 75 birthday, I have never been in a Wet Her Spoons, a pub should always be dog friendly, and I have never been in a Whack Ronald's, nor a Burger Kink. If they are meant to supply food, then they should copy Wimpy, who cook everything for just me. It is fresher, tasty, and not left on a shelf for who knows how long.

Wetherspoons for the fantastic building and decor, looks like an old Town Hall or Municipal building. But Hungry Horse for the Fish and tartar sauce, which matters most in a Fish & Chip dinner, and what a fantastic price! You lucked out there! I think the Wetherspoon's batter was made with sparking water or beer which makes it crispier. Also your Fish at Hungry Horse looked like a Fillet of Plaice to me. My favourite! ❤

When having salt and vinegar next, try putting on vinegar first then the salt.
If you add salt first, when you add the vinegar it will wash the salt off the food and down onto your plate.
Vinegar first and the salt will stick to the food.
    Thank me later 😂❤

I've always thought you can tell a lot about a restaurant by their chips/fries. It is easy to do a decent chip, but you have to work to do a really nice one. And if they have lousy chips (and I've been to a few places that managed to pull that off) you can pretty safely bet the rest of the food is going to be substandard.

OOOOHHH I TOTALLY agree regarding salt and vinegar!!!! You really cannot have enough... On the rare occasions I get it from the chippy - and they offer me s&v before wrapping it up - I always ask if I can do it myself! By the time I am half way through putting it on, the guy nearly always looks shocked - and there's nearly always some comment like "shall i call the ambulance now?" or just a look of disgust/concern! And totally add some more at home half way through😂😂😂

Usually if it doesn’t say Cod or Haddock it tends to be pollock because it is cheaper. If you are getting a premium fish like Cod or Haddock they tend to label it as such. It’s like Ice Cream, if it doesn’t say Dairy Ice Cream then it’s not real Ice Cream, it’s made with oils and powdered milk.

Just found your review so im a bit late to the party. Your findings and the comments are totally at odds with my experience of Hungry Horse a few months ago. I can honestly say it was the most attrocious fish and chips I had ever eaten - the fish was no thicker than a fish finger, the batter was soggy and the chips poor. Your Hungry Horse offering bore no resemblance to mine, perhaps I should try another branch. My local Wetherspoons has always produced excellent fish and chips, far better looking than your experience and therein possibly lies the problem - the variation from branch to branch although I have always been very happy with their food. Great review, will keep following.

That fish at Spoons didn't look like any cod I've ever eaten and looked suspiciously like Pollock which would account for the stronger taste you experienced , that or a bad fish as cod is mellow in flavour.

Can remember being in Spoons a while back and all I could hear from the Kitchen was Microwave pings every 30/60 seconds followed by food being taken out 🤣

    • @RyanDB

Burgers and steaks are grilled, fried food is (obviously) deep fried. If you're at one which does pizzas, they're actually cooked in a pizza oven, shockingly enough
Everything else is a (very cheap) microwaved ready meal. The kitchens don't *have* pans or a stove to use them on
That said, it's not unique to 'Spoons. Any chain pub will be exactly the same
Edit: Oh, actually, I just remembered the funniest thing on the menu. The "poached eggs" come pre-cooked in vacuum-sealed, individual plastic packaging, and are heated in the microwave 😂

Best fish n chips IMO: Chez Fred just outside Bournemouth👍

I like to use Wetherspoons on a regular basis as I travel around the UK doing business I'm getting to know where all the weather spoon's are the quality of the food is always good uncertainty good value for money and a lot of cases it's cheaper than your local fish and chip shop and there's also a nice cup of tea because that's the one thing you need with fish and chips

I went to Wetherspoons at the Bright Helm in Brighton on October 6th. I live in Canada & had heard that Wetherspoons did a great fish & chips, so that is why I went. I was so disappointed, with my fish & chip & I say “chip” because there were no more than six chips on the plate! The fish was just “okay” & to be honest I have had much better fish & chips in Canada!

Hi Sir! (sorry, I don't know your name). Although I live in the South now (US) I'm originally from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in New England where my family has lived since before 1638. We love tartar sauce with our fried fish and clams. If you go to a small family operated restaurant, the tartar sauce is home made. Delicious! I have to ask though, do you not have haddock in England? That's my favorite. Cod is popular back home too but haddock is the best

I think Spoons has a two meals for a tenner offer which includes the fish and chips and as you don't know which fish it is at Hungry Horse, spoons has to win it. It could be a cheaper fish like a pollock or something.

I've all but given up on Wetherspoons, now. Hungry Horse has proved to be way better value, with cleaner venues and friendlier staff included. I've also got a few local pubs that can easily match Wetherspoons, one offering a full Sunday lunch for under £10.00 and another offering a really pukka Indian grill for £15-20, again with excellent service...

Wetherspoons and Hungry Horse are pretty much the only places I go for a meal out. Occasionally I go in Morrisons cafe or Subway but that is quite rare. I took my mother to Hungry Horse recently. She had the £5 fish and chips and I had the new yorker. We also shared a nacho and sauces which was also £5. After the meal we realised it was too much food so despite enjoying it wouldn't get the nacho platter again. I mainly use Wetherspoons for hot drinks. I would start with a tea then have a mocha or hot chocolate. I think the most I've done is 4 refills but generally its 2 refills i.e. 3 drinks for the one price. In my whole life I think I've only been in McDonalds or Burger king once or twice but do love Wetherspoons and Hungry Horse.
