you had me at "steak" so LifeBoat!
rarely do we get such a perfect word with a battered fish ;-)
You can't go far wrong with fish and chips from most Yorkshire chippies. Just travel a bit north, up to Saltburn by the Sea and Middlesborough, and they're not a patch on true Yorkshire fish and chips. So you were bound to get good fare from both places. Magpie is not the only decent place in Whitby to get an excellent example of fish and chips, but I don't go there because I don't like the skin being left on the fish.
I live in a North Yorkshire village at present, and on Friday, I was charged over £10.00 for haddock and small bag of chips. They are now too expensive to eat on a regular basis, and I will now only have them once a month. It's not that I can't afford to have them once a week, it's the principle that they have continued to go up in price for months now. Why? To find the breaking point of people?, well, they've found mine.
Can you do a curry comparison in the future? Yorkshire boasts fantastic, value for money, curry eateries too, I think the fish and chip places have been done to death now dear. XX
Both looked amazing but I'm gonna say whitby slightly won it
All looks good but Scarborough fish looks better , Whitby Mush peas ❤
Scarborough for me.And thanks for the info on opening times.
Scarborough hands down....£16 is still expensive but Whitby taking the proverbial at £22 .
Fish and chips was a working class man's weekend affordable treat for the family and now places like Whitby turning it into some sort of pretentious upper class tourist delicacy.
I personally avoid places like Magpie's and find a back street chippy selling the same meal at half the price , then go find a bench quayside and share it with the gulls 🤣
Yes, absolutely agree.
Bang on.
Yep they were the days few beers fish and chips taxi home and stick got change from a fiver
My gran wouldn't buy fish n chips she said that was poor man's food only the really poor ate now it's almost that over priced only the rich can a
My local chippy in Cornwall now give you a tranquilizer with the bill instead of a sweet
😂😂😂
It’s not owned by Rick Stein is it? That would explain so much.
The salt sticks to your chips better if you put the vinegar on first. That’s what I’ve always thought.
I think the second one was best , the fish looked amazing 😊 nice and thick ❤
The Scarborough fish is one of my favourite fishes I've ever had
@everydayimeating3407 might have to take a trip there ya know .
Scarborough meal looks much nicer to me and about 6 quid cheaper, win win! Curry sauce is not something I'd want with fish though (ketchup all the way), that's a side I'd prefer with a pie or sausage in batter.
They had ketchup at the table too, I might try it with some next time
Great stuff mate. Craving fish and chips now! 😋
I think it’s hard to differentiate between the two, both looked good, although I think I preferred the look of the fish in the Scarborough chippy. I quite like to put a bit of vinegar in my mushy peas, or even occasionally a tiny bit of mint sauce.
The mushy peas makes the difference
Good fair review of what must be two great chippies. I would go with the Scarborough one. It just seems that little bit special with its limited opening hours, it’s one I would plan for and make a detour for. Both places looked great.
You're right, it does make it a bit more special!
Love your reviews. Proper reviews.
Thanks
Have to say that fish in Scarborough made my mouth water, and I prefer that style of curry sauce too
It made my mouth water too 😋
Having been to The Magpie a few times I admit their fish n chips are good.the batter is lovely.
However, they are very expensive and for a family of 4 the cost is prohibitive. For that reason I’d go for the cheaper ones. I am a Yorkshire girl after all 😂
The Magpie was really expensive I have to admit too
Agreed, no way could I justify spending almost £100 feeding my family a chippy lunch.
Vinegar first then the salt.👍💥💯
Like the look of the Scarborough chips as they have more colour to them. Vinegar first then the salt clings to it.
The Scarborough fish was delicious!
I always look forward for the food reviews as it gives new options to go that have good looking and tasty food 😋
Happy to hear that!
Hello EIE.
The Magpie for me. Everything looked well presented and delicious. A great vlog once again 😊😊😊
Thanks so much! 😊
Vinegar first then the salt sticks. Chip shop curry sauce should be sweet and fruity that’s what makes it different. I enjoy your vids keep posting
most north east beach towns have a great place for this kind of meal...
youll usually pay about £15 for that with a drink and a side of peas or curry...
cant go wrong with a lot of them to be honest...
"i think "the lifeboat" won this ,,, that steak of fish looked incredible
It was probably one of the thickest pieces of fish I have ever had
The Pot of Tea with separate Hot Water is pretty Standard in most places now. I've eaten Fish & Chips in Several places in Whitby, the Magpie however, is very much overated!!! If You do another Review in Whitby I'd personally Recommend The Fisherman's Wife on the Kyber Pass theirs are 1st Class!! I've not had Fish & Chips in Scarborough in Years, but these looked beautiful, well presented the Fish Wow!! & the Curry Sauce was better here. So overall I preferred Scarborough on this occasion!! Take Care, Thank You for Sharing.
Thanks for watching 😀
Providing a jug of hot water is a really old fashioned custom. Every tea shop or cafe would give you one with your tea years ago.
I remember in my younger days..(80s) fish always having skin on which I really like, these days most folk don't like for some reason. Both look amazing but I'm choosing second one, lovely looking batter and beautiful fillet of fish. Great video my man👍
They both look amazing, but I think Whitby takes it for quality. In fact, I’d love to see you return to The Magpie and try some more items on the menu. It all looked delicious!
If the fish and chips is to go by, the other things would be delicious
Vinegar first because it helps the salt stick, other way round and the vinegar can "wash" some salt off 😂 that's the way I've always done it and no one can convince me otherwise haha
Well said you always put vinegar on before salt doing it, the other way is just wrong
Have been both destinations in distant past as not a local and lucky enough enjoy first class Cod chips in Magpie as queues were not so manic. Next visit not as lucky as you say queues head along the harbour front so couldn't try haddock. Were fortunate find another in town which were very nice too.
Scarboro establishment what pity opens just three days as it looked up there for quality with many chippies. I guess maybe it's a town with high volume fish, chip shops which all produce quality standard. However queues aside Magpie is up there with best eat in/ take away in Country that I've visited over the years. Service and friendly staff added to enjoyment on that occasion. Enjoy your videos, alway s something to comment on. 👍
I loved the look at the Scarborough one... i do love Fish and Chips, one of my favourite meals... love them with all the sides .... heaven 😋
Its one of my favourite meals too
Hadley's is my go to chippy in Whitby,Fish Pan in Scarborough.Ive not been to the Lifeboat, but looks worth a visit. Just outside Scarborough,Seamer Fisheries chippy is probably the best in the area,at the moment.
There both look good. Really couldn’t choose, maybe go for the cheaper one. Nice video
You can't go wrong with either
We need to support these smaller businesses 👏 🙌 these are the best acutally these have more class than all the rest ❤
I have tried them both and definitely prefer the Lifeboat in Scarborough.
Another great video!!
Its a great fish and chips from the Lifeboat
Both looked yummy, i am on the fence, (I put vinegar on chips 1st so then the salt 2nd as it sticks better). Ty for staring 🎉
Its a tough decision
They both looked amazing!!! I’ve been to Magpie so I will be bias and say Whitby. The Lifeboat Chippy looks a true hidden gem though!! Great video …. Smithy
The magpie is one of the best fish and chips I've ever had
I've eaten at both in the past and both are great! The prices shocked me though since I've been living in Thailand but it can cost as much here or even more as the Fish and decent potatoes are imported. Lovely to see and brought back lots of memories of visiting my parents when they were still with us up in the north east. Cheers
The prices have gone up a lot lately
I’m at work at the moment so will watch this once I’ve finished. It has to be Whitby though surely! Magpie cafe is the best fish and chips I have ever had!
It has some really good fish and chips
Scarborough without a doubt is better, brilliant stuff as always.
Another great video. I think the Whitby chips looked perfect and the Scarborough fish 👌. I found myself saying ‘let’s have a combo bite’ yesterday in KFC!
Hahaha combo bites are the best
I think your vids kick ass . You should do kebab shops next . Try some in sowf east London, like sidcup or welling
Wow amazing and good ❤❤❤❤
A pot of tea and a pot of hot water has been around certainly since the sixties and probably since the Edwardian and Victorian era! It was taught in certain Catering colleges on the waitering side of them. At afternoon High Tea the pot of Hot Water will usually be offered. Finally some places might not offer hot water initially but if asked they will provide it.
If you use the vinegar first the salt will stick better. Liked!
The pot of hot water is incase you prefer a weaker tea, so can pour half tea, half hot water in your cup before adding milk. It was a regular thing at one time in the past, good to see cafes and restaurants are bringing it back.. You and your curry sauce! I notice you never have ketchup? Goes nicely on the mushy peas. I liked the look of the Fish & Chips more at Scarborough but the restaurant decor looked more appealing at Whitby. Either way, I am so jealous! 😅😋
They were both great, it was hard to choose between the 2
Yes, a combo bite of fish, chips, peas and ketchup is amazing.
@@mattwuk Definitely! Can't imagine the taste with curry sauce? Ketchup all the way! And he never squeezes the wedge of lemon on his fish!
@larhumba4233 actually, fish chips and curry sauce is my favourite way to enjoy it, but it has to be the hot curry sauce, I can't stand the fruity british sweet style stuff.
Ive always went vinegar first then salt because you just wash the salt off with the vinegar if you go salt first.
I add my vinegar first so my salt sticks to everything better. To me to salt first the vinegar washes the salt off.
Both look good to me.
Both of these were delicious!
Salt, vinegar and then more salt. If I'm gonna break my keto diet with those delicious chips and sugar in the sauces. I wouldn't want to scrimp, just go the whole hog. Great review TYVM
Peter's Fish Factory, 96 Harbour Parade, Ramsgate, Kent, is an excellent dine-in Fish & Chips restaurant / cafe. Really superb 👍
All the food looked really nice, I'd love to try them both!
I just done my first review on fish and chips so will definitely be trying more..
Great reviews!
Imagine if you could take certain items from each place and combine it into one orgasmic ultimate fish and chips. But in all seriousness both looked so tasty, however i think cost does make all the difference, especially if you wanted a fish and chip shop to eat at more often. Whitby would be more a one off, now and again thing. So i would say Scarborough.
Both the best ❤
They're both great
Do most chippies serve many other kinds of items?
The tea in Whitby looked fantastic, before you even got on to the fish and chips. Hot water used to come in its own pot, the jug is a new one on me. Chip shop curry sause is always mundane unless it's from a Chinese chippie. The Whitby fish looked better to me.
Scarborough for me👍
The fish was amazing there
When seasoning chips with salt and vinegar I put the vinegar on first it adds moisture for the salt to adhere to however if you add the salt first then add vinegar, the vinegar will wash some of the salt away, a personal hate of mine is battered fish with skin on the moisture in the fish steams the skin making it slimy and giving it an unpleasant texture for me.
@2:32 its called a Gravy Boat or in this case a Curry boat !
Nice one EIE
Thanks
Lifeboat is only open at weekends because we are now out of season in Scarborough
Have been going to the Lifeboat for years and for it's the best in the area
I can see why
I do enjoy watching these videos
It a draw for me they both looked delicious.
Cannot pick
Best wishes
Its a tough decision, they're both great
Why are you not 40 stones mate? Love the content.
That curry sauce container is a boat mate 😉👍🏻 (gravy boat to be precise but thatun'd be a curry boat I guess 🤷🏻♂️🤣)
Another great video mate whitby just for me aswell but can't fault either
Both were really really good
It should be vinger then salt my friend as the salt sticks to the batter & chip better 🏴👍😉✌️🏴
Scarborough did it for me. Yummy
magpie for me, i had a lovely haddock there , and it had the skin on, yummy
They do a really good fish and chips
I always put the salt on first - and LOADS😆 I never bother with mushy peas or curry sauce and I'm probably a bit of a pleb but i do like ketchup for the chips but agree with the tartare for the fish - i could just eat that now!😂
149 at Bridlington, Inghams at filey, and whiteheads at Hornsea also well worth a visit. Cheaper, and much better value.
I need to try all these places
Dry traditional thing to have pot of freshly boiled water to add to teapot to stop it being stewed and give you more fresh ish tea
Silver street chippy in Whitby is so gorgeous
For Me Whitby will always have with Magpie being the best fish and chip restaurant you honestly can't beat it Scarborough looked and sounded nice
Scarborough
yummy 🐟🦈
It was
Second one for me I think.
The fish was great from there
I love eating fish with tartar sauce, however I do like it with ketchup too. Actually I can on occasion be a bit of a heathen with my fish . I sometimes take in my own bottle of Tabasco or sweet chilli and mix it up with ketchup and a little malt vinegar for a nice subtle kick to the fish. I can hear people crying into their tea, but hey don't knock it till you try it hahahaha 😅😅😅. Try it on fishfingers first before attempting it on cod or haddock 🎉🎉🎉😅😅😅
A little future north you have the fish quay in north Shields, there you can visit the waterfront chippy, much better than both of these.
I think whitby for a treat as its expensive both looked lovely tho
Its a great treat 😋
You cant beat good fish and chips. I have a palate for most cuisines but the simplicity of great ingredients well cooked is hard to beat.
You could taste the freshness of the fish from these places for sure
No bread and butter!?
that’s whatIwas going to ask, a traditional fish tea should have bread and butter
It didn't come included with the meal 😔
The batter on the fish at Whitby looks gorgeous but the chips looked better in Scarborough. Whitby just nudged it for the overall experience. Every other reviewer I have seen loved the curry sauce at Whitby. A slice of bread would have been nice too.
Some bread and butter would have been great
Vinegar always first!
Scarborough, the fish looked really nice, plenty of fish and chips. xx
It was a great fish and chips at Scarborough
Have you done a proper Chinese or Indian restaurant comparison yet mate?, I do enjoy your videos, no gimmicks or clickbait, which seems to be norm for some food review TH-camrs!
Whitby by a mile, presentation, quality of the product. Scarborough says it all, tea bags, Tartar sauce, and other condiments in sachys
Vinegar then salt . Salt sticks to the wet 👍😎😎
Vinegar fitsy as putting salt on first the viy washes it off
Vinegar first else washes salt off…vinegar then salt 😍😋
I give this one to Whitby's because their sides did look better, but for every day eating Scarborough probably takes it. Both meals looked fantastic.
The mushy peas at Whitby was really nice, one of the nicest i've had
@@everydayimeating3407 I was going to say, while I am no expert on the subject, the mushy peas at Whitby looked better than most I've seen on here. And the chips looked better. Probably a push on the curry sauce though.
Got to be Whitney for me, I like the place first because of the Dracula legend. But back to reality, the magpie cafe is legendary, it's a top place you've got to visit, seen it on other TH-cam channels. I prefer Whitney all round!. I'd go there, think Whitney has the best fish and chips. Visit the isle of man we have some amazing spectacular cafes restaurants to go for all food types etc, one to consider maybe?
Isle of man seems like a good place to go to
@@everydayimeating3407 it very much is, we have the capitol Douglas, then Ramsey, Castletown, Port Erin, Port St Mary, Onchan, Peel, Laxey, these are some of the places to visit for great restaurants, inc award winning food, local and amazing fish and chips, really white, thickly crackly batter, thick mushy peas and amazing curry sauce. It's a hidden gem in the Irish sea and the people real nice, friendly, it's a small island with a big heart and real quality food, food like you've eaten on your channel and much more here, visit, you won't be disappointed, hotels are really good also, The Mannin, The Empress, The Sefton, to name a few good ones
Just judging the fish and chips, since I'm not keen on mushy peas and hate curry sauce (!) the Scarborough one wins for me even if they were a similar price, but £22 for one portion at Whitby is just ridiculous.
It is a lot of money
Vinegar then salt 💯
So much milk in your tea. 😀 At least you don't have sugar. If the chips are smaller they have less surface area to fry.😇
Always vinegar first. Gives the salt something to cling to. Scarborough wins the day.
Both looked good think whitby takes it but only just for me
It just took it for me too
Scarborough, £6 cheaper and a bigger fish
Its for sure better value
I think the main show is the fish and chips and the lifeboat in my opinion won hands down! The peas might of tasted slightly better at the magpie but £6 more I don’t think so ! Vinegar first then the salt is the way to go
0:28 that'll be that cost of living crisis we're supposedly in lol.
The extra jug/pot of hot water was always served. Then it faded out of popularity. But coming back into fashion. There have been so many reviews on the Magpie Cafe over the past few years 😮 we learnt nothing new from today's video. However the lifeboat fish&chips shop, was brilliant. A throw back to a proper local chippy. Sniby chips, bits 'n' bobs lovely 😊. The fish looked like a tail cut,and non the worse for that 😊 A full fish&chips supper or lunch. Must have a pot of tea And 2slices of bread and butter (white sliced, and never cut😢) Today. The main thing in any meal out must be value for money 😊 And the lifeboat chippy wins that round. That with the smaller more select menu, and only open at the weekends They serve good quality, fish shop grub .Only gripe didn't see savaloys on the menu But next time i'm off to Scarborough Fair I'll be found in the Lifeboat Fish&chips Shop Cheers 🥂 Allan&Family 😊❤
The Lifeboat fish bar is well worth the visit
The curry sauce is not in its own container. It’s actually called a gravy boat what your curry sauce was in.
The vinegar has to added first. Its only common sense. If you add the salt first you just wash it off when you add the vinegar. There is no debate as you stated.
Looks declicious...
Did you eat them all in the same day 😊 x
I did eat them in the same day, I have the Whitby one, then drove to Scarborough and had the one there lol 😋 I will need to try some in Oxford though
@everydayimeating3407 lol fair play :) they both looked so good I'd have ate the lot too. 😋 and love your videos they are so good. And makes me hungry everytime lol haha xx yes please do come to Oxford. We will show you the best chippy 😄😄
Scarborough , haddock no skin , winner !
Including the skin on the fish is a bit unusual
They both look good, but what about bread and butter, or gravy?
Bread and butter would have been great on both
Who makes the better batter!?
