    I'm the type of gamer that doesn't mind dropping $5 here and there on Free to Play games if I like the looks of the cosmetics, and I thought I would feel the same about Palia. The items sure look nice, especially the more expensive ones, but the prices of the items and Palia coins is more expensive than I expected... I think the lowest tier outfit should be less than $5 worth.

      I'm also that type of person and I'm lucky to be in a position now where I can do that more regularly. So the prices haven't felt too bad for me, but I'm thinking about all the players who have to make decisions about what games they want to support, and could be driven away by this.

      @@Pandarah I love this comment and I wish more people were willing to accept that not everything has to be for them. I dig the vibe AND I agree that it has the potential to do a lot better. The hype got unreal right out of the gate, and like I said in the video, they weren't super into releasing a lot of details on things because the game was still in closed development and things were changing. But it meant that in the absence of data, people determined what the game would be on their own.

      I was very excited to get into the closed beta, but after a couple days of playing I can't help but feel this whole "friendly community game" is a big let down. The social aspect of the game just isn't there and most people just run around and play it like a solo game so then your left With only the core game systems which are repetitive to say the least. Not great considering we have BG3 just released and upcoming starfield, why would people stay on this after open beta? I dunno. Maybe it'll age like a fine wine

      @@DadJokeCinema Doesn’t matter If you can or not. Could buy the whole shop without feeling it but the prices are stupid high anyway.
      I would buy 4-5 skins with $5 prices and 2-3 with $10 prices. Now I pay nothing
      Just because you can doesn’t make it worth it.

    Great video, probably the best overview on the cash shop that I've seen yet. That said, it didn't talk about the massive problem of them not selling a chef outfit for me to wear while cooking. I feel that until this outfit exists, the cash shop should be shut down completely. That is all.

    I believe the prices are too high and I am not a fan of the bundles that are short of having enough for an outfit, therefore having to purchase more than one bundle and having left over coins which are useless unless you then buy more bundles. Transparency for me = I should not need to be a math expert or have a calculator handy to work out the bonus value as you have (much appreciated 😀) and I also should not be pressured into buying more coins than I need for a given outfit. Myself and friends were eager to experience the cash shop and more than willing to support Singularity 6, but the high prices and the bundle immediately put us off and we didn't purchase anything.
    If I may be blunt, disposable income will differ between everyone and although I appreciate that you could spend 50$, you must also appreciate that this may be unaffordable for others (especially if you compare the value of the dollar to other currencies). In my mind if they had treated this more in line with some other popular MMO's, then an outfit being the equivalent of say a monthly subscription would open more sales, as a lot of people can justify a monthly sub as subscribed to in other games, whereas the cost of the current outfits are so much higher, for myself triple the cost of a monthly sub to say World of Warcraft. To simplify this, if 20 people were playing Palia and 10 of them had a decent disposable income, then this 10 would probably buy 2 or 3 outfits at the $10 mark, but more importantly, the 10 with a lesser disposable income would probably also invest in at least one outfit and maybe then buy one piece per month (in line with a sub they are used to paying). In the long term this would earn more for Singularity having so many people ready to invest, rather than the way they have it now where many people may decide not to buy anything.
    I won't discuss predatory decisions as I believe we won't agree on this subject, but I will end by saying that I believe Singularity 6 have not been as open and transparent as they previously stated.

    • @DadJokeCinema
      @DadJokeCinema  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Great points, and thank you for this perspective. I really should have pointed out in the video that I realize dropping $50 on a game is not realistic for everyone and shouldn't be expected from anyone.
      I also agree with you that S6 has missed the mark on being as transparent as they said they want to be. While I said that they technically didn't do the things they said they wouldn't do, they also fell short of my expectations.
      If you don't mind, I'd like to hear your opinions on it - especially if they don't match mine. I don't want to exist in an echo chamber where the only comments are ones that agree with me.

    • @jaydalonas6569
      @jaydalonas6569 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DadJokeCinema Thank you for your response, as requested I will try to clarify my thoughts. When we discuss predatory decisions I refer to the bundles more than anything, this idea that you need to buy more than one bundle to obtain an outfit and in most cases will have left over coins, which then encourages you to buy more bundles to be able to spend this surplus. Although I am aware that you have explained this in a response as follows: "The weird thing is that TECHNICALLY you can just pay your $15 - buy three $5 packs and you'll have exactly 1275 coins, which allows you to buy a $15 outfit. You have to do more work and give up any "bonus" - and it still isn't a direct purchase, just a series of intermediary steps to buy something." The key part is to do this you give up the bonus!!!! As stated in the Palia's Business Model: "The key takeaway is that you won’t be forced to buy loot boxes, or be overly pressured by the fear of missing out (FOMO) to get that one item you wanted before it leaves a continuously rotating store." Now I know they stated FOMO as missing out on an item before it leaves the store, but on first reading the implication is that they will not use the 'predatory' FOMO tactics, and yet I believe they have done so with these bundles, encouraging people to buy more than they need for fear of missing out on the bonus.
      For anybody reading this who has not seen the Business Model, you can access it here: palia.com/news/palia-business-model
      Secondly and again from the Business Model: "We believe that if we make the best game we can, along with presenting a transparent and truly optional monetization system" these bundles and the bonus for each is not as transparent as I would like, I respectfully suggest that if it was so easy to understand, then your video or others would not be necessary. I feel it should be on Singularity 6 to explain purchases in a simple and easy way to understand, rather than have a TH-cam Content Creator explain it for us (no offence intended).
      I will end by saying I did enjoy your video and it did clarify a lot of the issues, however, rather than it alleviating some of my concerns, I'm sorry to say it only tended to solidify them.

    • @DadJokeCinema
      @DadJokeCinema  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jaydalonas6569 YES! I'm glad that it fortified what you thought about those concerns - while I tried to avoid a ranting tone, I don't like how they are going about this and as I said in the video, I don't think it should fall on me to have to dispel rumors and clarify pricing structures. The store seems obfuscated on purpose, and I don't like that.

  • @writinggamer8059
    @writinggamer8059 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I think the prices are way too high for a bundle, but even the single items. $50, the equivalent price of a whole game, for 3 outfits and dyes you technically already had for free is ridiculous. It’s not the $50 but how little you get for $50.
    I’m someone who is okay with paying a higher price for bonus cosmetics and currency. But this is outrageously expensive. They already are breaking promises of “no tricks” by using the same old price structure to force you to spend more, and the “you can dye your other clothes these colors, but we will charge you to use them on a premium costume.”
    They also made a huge mistake giving us all of the free cosmetics during character creation. They should have given us 1-2 options in 1 color, then making all the rest unlocked in gameplay. Quest rewards. Tailoring skill. Something. Give Jel a purpose other than being the face of the cash shop. Gifts are nice but people like to earn things and upgrade their look with progress.
    Also FOMO already exists even if these items never go away. Because a lot of people can’t afford these prices or refuse to pay them. Even if you are refusing to pay doesn’t mean you don’t feel bad not getting a thing you like. Not having a way to earn currency, even in small amounts, would help with the price issue.
    I honestly don’t know how many people will find value in these cosmetics. But if it’s too few and the main reason is the prices, that’s going to be a big problem for the game’s survival.

  • @kstar1489
    @kstar1489 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Even Palia being free to play, $20 or $30 for a single outfit is insane to me and sets bad precedent for more ridiculous forms of monetization in other games. If there were other things monetized, like the game itself, instead of the ridiculous outfit prices I think people would feel they are getting more for their money. As it stands, the outfits are not worth their prices not even a little bit. You’d be throwing your money away imo. People will say because it’s free it makes sense, but it isn’t the one time $50 purchase of a full product, it’s $50 over and over again for outfits. I’m glad for now this is just for outfits, but it’s still crazy even as it is imo.
    I’m personally put off by these prices. I’ll still be playing for free and plan to ignore the cosmetics store entirely at these current prices. Hell, I’d rather put $20 into a tip jar for making the beautiful, awesome game than spend it on an outfit not remotely worth the price

    The one thing about the premium shop that rubbed me the wrong way was Jel's introductory quest. Personally I don't think it was necessary since I'd already figured out where to find the premium shop. The premium shop prices also remind me of Overwatch 2's prices, and then you remember that some ex-employees of Blizzard are on the dev team 😢

    The only gripes I really have about palias cash shop is the premium currency bundles that make sure you just don't quite have enough and are otherwise left with some left over. I know this is standard for the industry so it is what it is. The other thing is none of the outfits are my thing, they feel a bit off for the aesthetic of the world but this I accept is a me problem.

    • @DadJokeCinema
      @DadJokeCinema  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yep, I address that in the video, the framing of giving you "bonus coins" can make people think they have to pay more to get enough coins, or buy "the right amount" which leaves them with left over coins tempting them to spend more money.

    • @thejadegecko

      Unfortunately, that's how all games w/cash shops do. It's how they price their items, so you always buy up if you have 0 credits (or w/e the currency is).... Riot does this with both League of Legends and Valorant, Guild Wars 2 has this, etc. It's a known tactic... I just wished we had more customizable options (click picking primary/secondary colors instead of their few default options).

    I usually spend money on in-game transactions (or DLC). But with Palia, the prices really put me off. I would have preferred to pay a base price like in Disney's Dreamlight Valley. The microtransactions there are also quite expensive (not nearly as expensive as in Palia), but it feels like you get more for your money. Pricing models for games are always tricky. I think Palia's pricing model is bad and the developers would get more out of it if they didn't make the game free and the microtransactions were cheaper. A lot of players talk about supporting the developers, but I'm worried that the game won't be able to sustain itself with such poorly calculated prices. It would be better to have a subscription model or a base price and low in-game fees.

  • @NsaneWhisper
    @NsaneWhisper ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The real problem that I've seen is that they're going to get into trouble for offering a "discounted price" for something that was never sold at full price with those bundles. I understand what their concept behind it, but seeing as it's literally impossible to purchase a bundle at "full price" even if you buy each item one by one, this will be considered illegal in quite a few places. They redid the main shop page last I checked, but it still showed the "discount" on the item pages, and without it being explained fully in the shop, the whole practice is just asking for a lawsuit.
    They *really* need to work on their communication.

    I think (this is only my pure opinion is) that what we call "micro-transactions" as we know it, doesn't exist anymore. I can NOT call something micro-transaction if I "need" to buy ANY cosmetic for a price of another whole game.... You got my point ? This is only some internal purchase for a costume/skin but for a price of another game....like WTF ? This is my problem with just to say an example Apex Legends... In game bundle for over 100 € ? I mean are you crazy ? For that price you can buy TWO full games (ok, with today prices ALMOST) two games, instead of some skin ? Even if I HAVE a proper income, even if I CAN afford it, for those prices I will not support it EVEN if I really truly like this game.... Because its a chain reaction, that the in game purchases will be more and more expansive... XY years before you could purchase "loot boxes" "skins" "bundles" for 5/10 €... Now ? You purchase a bundle for 40 € ... On a long road those prices will hurt this game. (Another example Sea of Thieves. Purchase whole bundle for 15 € and those skins, ship skins weapon cosmetics to those pirate themes looks WAY better than Palia skins.

    I would be willing to get more, but i agree I hate the price of the coin packs being confusing. But I honestly am not as upset as others seem to be by the whole shop. I appreciate that currently it’s only cosmetics they are charging for.

    I want access to this game so bad after watching my partner play for a while. However I do agree this store isn't appealing for the sole reason that it's not a direct transaction, and I have to over purchase fake currency to get anything from the store.
    If they move away from this monetization, and perhaps lower the prices slightly, I will be way more tempted to get something from the store.
    I want this bundle, it costs 15 dollars. I pay 15 dollars. Done and dusted... What's wrong with direct purchases and why do video game companies hate them?

      I get WHY they all use premium currency - you create an economy that you control, separate from inflation and different currencies, and you can over value your coins to make things appear cheaper. But just because something is good for a business doesn't mean they should do it.

    Thanks for the overview. I have been mostly playing subscription based MMO rpg's (WoW, Eve-online, etc), which you had to buy first and had to extend game play with an monthly subscription and also games you had to pay for upfront and were free afterwards (like Guildwars). All these game had a real cash shop for cosmetics and what you can call "boosters" for experience gain etc.
    I have spent real money in all these games where I made the trade-off to what I had to pay and what benefits or visual pleasure it would bring me.
    So far I have not spent any money in Palia for the reason I have not really found any really interesting outfits thus far. Something for an engineer, a miner or a fisherman is lacking sofar. Perhaps later for when they add content.
    What concerns me more is whether what the shop is offering at this time and the current pricing (quite steep) will be enough to pay for all the cost Singularity 6 makes to exploit Palia. I know a free game like Fortnite makes an unimaginable amount of money, but if Palia will attract that number of players we'll have to see.

    I think this video does a really good job of explaining things I was feeling without me being able to put a finger on them at the time. I purchased the $50 pack, not because I really felt like spending $50 going in, but because of the bonus coins I would end up getting AND the fact that I saw the outfit I wanted (the one with antlers) was in a package and I worried if I didn't get all 3 I'd later be sad I got the wrong one. At this point, I have now selected one as my favorite and I really wish I hadn't spent all that money on basicaly one outfit (tho I do love the horns on another so I mix those since I have them already). I think maybe if they had a "refund period" I would be happier. I could have returned the other two and have coins to spare on other fits I might actually use.
    As it stands since all 3 patterns are mostly the same it feels like I'll never really use the others since they aren't my "favorite" one and they are all super similar anyway. With that being said I sort of feel like the model where they have three outfits that are all basically the same minus tiny details or colors is kind of lame. I love the outfit and *might* want it in another variation but spending the price of a whole new outfit for each one feels like a bit much. I'm not really getting a whole other outfit worth out of it since its so similar to the others. (I know it has the discount but I feel the point still stands, its a bit much for what you get).
    All of that said though, I now look like a magestic huntress and I'm estatic about it. In the end, I've sort of accepted that I paid $50 for that and, while I don't think I would have spent that upfront, I'm not so regretful of it I'm in a rage now. I had the money to give and I wanted the outfit and to support the game. I DO think things can and should be improved and I likely won't spend more until things change a bit, but its far from the worst it could be.

    I was fully planning to drop cash into the shop. I do so for wow and have sadly done so for ffxiv. But I'm also in the boat that I had no idea some outfits weren't able to be broken up (soothsayer, looking at you).
    Plus .. for the price.. even in the sub and pay to play mmos I get a full outfit and can in most cases change the shoes and gloves out.
    So for the simple fact that the customization is limited while prices are high.. eh I'll stay in my commoner clothes.
    I'd love to buy 1 or 2 outfits just to mix and match but even with giving me 3 color choices for buying 1 set (not the bundled 3 sets of the same outfit) its still high to me.
    I admit to spending money even 20$ at a time for phone games here and there. But most of the time it was .99 cent deals to the 5 and 10$ marks that really suckered me in.
    Also till they show me more of what the game has to offer long term.. I'm hesitant to drop cash (let alone easily 30 to 50$.. not even with wanting the soothsayer set anymore..) I have a fair fee concerns with how the game runs and such. Lots of minor things that just make it awkward and a bit more grindy than expected (like the fact the best and only recommend money maker is destroying the local deer population haha.. shocked fishing or star rated farming/cooking isn't higher).

    I was going to buy from the cash shop but the prices are egregious. They are overpriced and the coin system they have in play is garbage. They are ensuring you always have "left over" coins making you feel like you're wasting money by leaving coins behind. It should be just a flat real money cost, not coins, so you can see the true cost of an item. I went into the game thinking "Sure, I'll drop some cash to help this Dev. Team out and pick up a few cosmetic items." Then I seen the cash shop coins system and prices, I now I'm thinking: "Nope, not giving these shady, greedy, got'cha game bastards a dime."

    I was 2 hours of gameplay in and i already bought the soothsayer bundle. I don't necessarily regret it as i believe the devs deserve to be compensated for their hard work, but in actuality i only ever use one of the sets in the bundle so it's definitely a lesson learned. I could've instead gotten one of the sets and then another set from a different bundle.
    I also completely agree with the criticism against the coins bundles, they should allow you to buy precisely the quantity you want.

    Great video DadJoke. I definitely agree. I don't ususally spen real money in games very much with a few exceptions. But I'm curious, how do we get the visible Back Pack like shown in the previous videos. I don't see it anywhere. Anyone know?

    I think 20€ for one dress is just insane....I Would spend a lot of money if it was cheaper, is not the same spending 60€ in a lot of dresses than 20€ and getting just one, that's why I didn't spend any money even when I love the game and I won't do it. Because if they make it so expensive...what if a better dress appears...? You've got to think way too carefully where you spend your money. It's sad becuase knowing I will never have more dresses makes me feel like try to not engage too much with the game or that It taht I will get bored sooner and I needed to. I left games for this reason, cosmetics give life to the game and you play more, if you cannot have then it gets frustrating and you leave earlier. Also i never get this pricing...isn't it better to have millions of people buying a lot of cheap stuff that just some that can afford such amount?

      It's pretty crazy when there's no actual product. It costs nothing to produce and is just some pixels or a box checked somewhere to put the item in your inventory. You can buy an actual dress for 20 euros... maybe not a super high quality dress but like an actual product nonetheless. I've been enjoying the game and would happy to spend a few dollars on something to help support the company, but the current prices are too much to feel worth it to me.

    As someone gaming since the SNES, it's wild to me that devs have to say at all that they won't lock gameplay mechanics behind *monetization. I'd rather support a good game by buying it outright and having better cosmetics that don't have to be bought piecemeal. I usually avoid F2P, but the Palia team has made a big deal about bucking industry standards so i gave it chance. And just to be clear, I have bought cosmetics on FFXIV and appreciate how you only pay for what you get and can clearly see whats included. However, one look at Palia's conversion rate, pricing structure for currency bundles, and prices took me out. I decided to support the Whimsy and Wonder Humble Indie Bundle instead.

    Logically, with their current rates it's 10$ for 1,000 coins + some menial amount. They've just figured out how to market it so it appears you're getting more bang for your buck.

    Palia is right up my alley and I desperately want them to succeed, so I was excited to support them by purchasing some cosmetic items (something I otherwise never do) and drop maybe $5-$10 a month, but right now that will grant me absolutely nothing 😬 I sincerely hope they listen to the feedback and lower the prices. If they lowered the prices more people would be able to partake and support them, and the whales would still whale.

    Right now is my first exposure to Palia. I have played freemium mobile games. And I’ve deleted all of them eventually because of their voracious practices. Palia seems refreshing because of their attitude. I’m playing largely because of their attitude. I’d like spend money on the game because of their attitude. However the pricing structure gives me a sick rip-you-off feeling, for the reasons you described. It doesn’t fit their other expressed attributes. I was ready to buy. Now not so much. Great Target example, by the way. I’ll eventually buy because the company should get paid for the product I’m using but it’s more adversarial. Who’s a chernuk now?

    Thats a very well know method in Mobile games leaving people behind with unsatisfying feeling of left over coins you cant use . And absolutly hate this practise. Also no Paypal Option. Not everybody outside the USA has Credit Cards. Esp. in Germany and europe ist not common to have them.I would like Klarna or Paysafe Card and option. But only Credit card is very narrow minded by creating international Game. I hated this for Midjourny too and dont support this.
    Way too overpriced, when motivate people to buy something it should be affordbale. I really like the Magic Deer Look that reminds me of wow , Druide T3 and 4 but not for 30 $

    It's not as easy as restricting the definition of "tricks" to mean only CERTAIN types of manipulation. Words mean things, and so I must conclude that they have not kept their word.
    If they truly wanted to be respectful and avoid tricks, it's incredibly easy to do. They, however, have chosen to put in the work to benefit from manipulative practices. It's kind of extra disrespectful after the statements they've made.

    Now I'm glad I thought the game was meh. I refuse to play a game at those prices because the cosmetics will always be dangled in your face in the form of other players. If the majority of the people are not able/willing to spend that much they will eventually stop playing, and then the game will either die, or survive on their rich customers with more predatory tactics. Nobody wins in the end.

  • @BlackWolf-uk2yb
    @BlackWolf-uk2yb ปีที่แล้ว

    These predatory tactics will ONLY stop when people stop playing the games that use them! And believe me we wouldn't have to do it for very long before these companies would start panicking and change! I don't get why this is so hard for people to do with sooooo many other games out there! We need to stop playing these games AND stop promoting them!!!

  • @wolfofdawn4053

    The prices are simply too steep. The game is fun and all but nothing mindblowing or that I couldnt get in another game. Frankly I still wish they had made this a pay tp play then no microtransactions. I simply don't like spending money on ftp games. Add to the whole coins thing and having oens left over, it just means that by nature im waisting some of that money which is no something im happy with. The lack of communication is also a deninate issue. As it is I also simply am not confident for palia in the long run. Make no mistake I want it to thrive and do well but they won't have the money to do so with the way the cash shop is currently, or atleast I have my doubts. I have a general rule of thumb with games. If a game costs £5 I want to get or be able to get 50 hrs out of the game, not necesaryily how long the game will take but also hrs towards replaying and all that. For an outfit in palia to be worth it to me, lets say an outfit is £25, I will only spend that If I feel like I can get 250 hrs worth of gameplay out of it and currently palia isnt there yet. Mabey im a bit of a cheapscate but I simply dont have the money to spend unless it feels truly worth it.
    That turned into a text wall but you get the idea.

  • @RahzZalinto
    @RahzZalinto ปีที่แล้ว

    you know what, I'm gonna have to disagree. And I don't want to, but time has shown me the light. Every time some game, tries to not have a p2w cash shop, the western audience lets it fail. We do not have enough people interested in a casual, cosmetic only cash shop to keep an MMO afloat. RIP maplestory 2 (and maplestory 1 which tried briefly to not have p2w and had to revert lol).
    I'd be surprised if even this current model for a non p2w cash shop can last. I'd much prefer if I could just buy a purple hat, or a hat and color it however I wanted - but that won't be commercially viable for them. I could be wrong, but I've seen more than just maplestory 2 go under for this kinda stuff. I'm just saying, I think at the very least, they need to sell outfits as bundles and limit things by color like they are....unfortunately :P HOPE I'M WRONG but that hope has led to nothing but game cancellations lol
