Do you design things like this toolbox in a cad program or even hand sketch before you begin or do you design and build piecemeal?

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@toddharshbarger8616 I don't use Cad software for most of my projects no. I make technical drawing by hand for maybe half my projects but I mostly do this for calculating materials. In this case, I made a 1:1 plan of one side of the box and that was it. I mostly used this to make sure there was room for all the tools in the box and to get an idea of the esthetics of the design. I find it easy and convenient to simply design things in my head as I go

I think you mentioned that you read your comments so heres a little story for you, though it's nothing compared to the story you have shared building with all of us! ... I cut my first dovetails in the first few months after graduating college, obviously I did not study woodworking. I started with Japanese saw that I still use to this day. In the few years of my woodworking career I cut hundreds of dove tails making boxes for people, always trying to make a fancier drawer, or a better knob.... I landed a job with a renowned chair-maker here in Asheville, 3 years later I went back on my own now with serious draw knife and spokeshave and card scraper skills, now I have found my own superniche which allows me to push my craft. And now! with inspiration from you I get to push at a whole new level...kinda like the 4 minute mile phenomenon. Thank you for posting these videos.

With a toolbox like this I would spend days open and close every single drawer just for the satisfaction of doing it. Your creativity is fascinating. Please keep inspire us. Thanks for sharing.

It's one thing to be this talented at woodworking... but to come up with the designs, communicate those designs to the lay-person in a way that shares the passion, challenges, and solutions you encounter, create and edit a video that is mesmerizing and informative to watch, and make people laugh along the way... it's a whole other level. Thank you for letting us in on this! Can't get enough.

It's very seldom that I wish for the TH-cam video was longer. I could watch you building stuff for hours. Beautiful toolbox. Absolutely genius design. The overly complicated set of features seems to me like something I could come up with myself. Except, I would be to lazy to execute it and do not have the necessary skills anyway. Very much looking forward for your next project.

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Happy you enjoyed the video! Sometimes I feel like 12-15 minutes is long, so I'm happy some of you are enjoying the length. My next video will also be about making a weird mechanism for a drawer on a peice of furniture, actually

Your work is art! Everything I’ve seen on your channel says you are so close to being able to make a fine living making cool stuff that drives your heart. I hope (a bit selfishly) that you find the time to put in the hard work to “catch the algorithm.”
Seriously… you do great work on so many levels!

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you! I'm happy you enjoy my content. I find the algorithm frustrating because it doesn't value original content much. It likes when you follow trends more. And for me, the "never done before" part is the most fun...

The quick shot of your belt grinder reminded me I was gonna try and build one like yours. I so love the design of it. Ho-hum...maybe sometime when I'm not buried under a mountain of other things to do.
Thanks for another great video of another great build of another great design by a great designer/builder.

SO many questions but the 1st one is how heavy is the box with all the tools? Is it practicable to be used on a job-site? I must say, it's definitely a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, well done!

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I forgot the weight it before moving it to an other shop where I don't have a scale sadly. But I has estimated it would be around 15 lbs fully loaded and if I remember well just the box itself was 5lbs.
The tool box is more designed similar to a machinist tool box. More for caring precision equipment and only taking it out to leave it on a workbench all day. I would most definitely not want to leave this banging around in the back of a pickup truck aha
      No

  • @TetraCNC
    @TetraCNC 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Really amazing. I have to ask - did you draw up some plans before you did this (no not asking for any) of did you do this on the fly?

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I made one plan of the side profile of the tool box. That was mostly just to help me with the visual design and making sure all the tools would fit in height and length. The rest was all designed in my head as I went. I find plans to often be longer to draft than fixing mistakes so I'd rather make some of the parts twice than draft plans for 15 hours. In the end there's just the part of the drill bit mechanism that I made twice and the laching systems that I had to make a prototype (which as stated, sucked.)

    • @TetraCNC

Absolutely in love with the finished product! Out of curiosity, how much does it weigh with all the tools inside?

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I sadly forgot to mesure that before moving it to the workshop I made it for. But if i remember well, my estimate was 5lbs for the box itself and fully laoded it was suposed to be around 15lbs. So the box is much heavier than a plastic or sheet metal toolbox. But this box was designed to be moved on a bench once or twice during work day so it's not a big issue.
