      @@ODRModurol I've also acquired a Daimler SV8 (Jap import with 40k on clock) for which I'll be giving lashings of attention - chains/tensioners - but the underside is factory new! - inspected the underside at point of purchase, saw the shiny bolts, giggled and grabbed it. Picnic trays and a supercharger - perfect combination. The CATS suspension took some fettling but it was 'just' bad connectors.

    This is by far the most thorough and well explained video I'd seen! I have 1999 XJ8L and am the orginal owner. I changed the secondary tensioner 3 years ago. Didn't have the nerves to do the guides or primary tensioner. The high torque needed for the crank shaft pulley discouraged me big time. I am going to have to change them eventually. Your videos will help alot. Many thanks for putting all those together!

Might be a sensible precaution before such a long trip planned, especially if you are planning to keep the car long term. I am owning for one year an XK8 Cab manufactured in April 2000 with 84000 kms on the odometer (this mileage should be real according to the yearly technical inspection records). So I assume the secondary timing chain tensioners are Rev2 (plastic ones with spring). In order to avoid future troubles, I would like to upgrade those tensioners to Rev3 (metal cylinders ones). The car has now a mileage of 92000 Kms and as a matter of fact, I did not hear so far distribution chain rattling or suspicious noises. I plan to upgrade the distribution but, since it is a quite heavy and compex dismounting/remounting process to make an overall change, for the time being, I'd like to limit the operation to the secondary chain tensioners (the said most subject to problem). From the tutorial EP48 I have watch, l wonder if this can be done by just removing the upper parts of the engine; I mean without desmounting the front carter that gives access to the primary chains, guides and tensioners. Is anyone knowing if this is feasible or not?

    • @ODRModurol
      @ODRModurol  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Çavapaslatête, It is possible see the video link below. I haven't used this method but you remove the cam. It is possibly the cheapest method of doing the job. I would recommend doing the secondary tensioners as soon as possible. If you are keeping the car probably better to do the complete timing chains, tensioners and guides. Hope that helps, regards Damian. th-cam.com/video/ECC69nXv3N4/w-d-xo.html

    Damian thank you for taking the time to answer and for your videos. We were already talking about bore wear and loss of power on my 2001 Jaguar VDP. I do not have the Aj26 I have the AJ27. So would bore wear still factor in to this? I will try to change the fuel filter and then run injector cleaner. It does sound the bore wear (the noise) when I compare it in a youtube video. I was told I would have to replace the block if thats the case.

      @tainchains. Your car is a 2001 so hopefully should have the steel liners. you might be very unlucky and have one of the last nikasil engines What is your engine number? The first steel-lined AJ-V8 came off the production line In the year 2000 on August 18th at 10.43am hence the engine number will read: 00 08 18 1043 or more precisely:0008181043. May I ask, you mentioned a bad cylinder bore could be responsible for my problems. In you experience is that likely the extent of it or is it possible that my piston will be damaged or???

    • @ODRModurol
      @ODRModurol  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @tainchains, no sure to be honest. Assume wear of the bore coating will reduce compression. If you have a damaged piston you will probably have no compression or other symptoms ie noising engine rattle or usual tapping. Compression tests might give you some more information. Sorry don't have personal experience of your issue, regards Damioan

    • @ODRModurol
      @ODRModurol  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @tainchains, doing the timing gear is a very good idea for this age of car but doubt it has anything directly to do with misfiring cylinders. Plugs, coil packs and ECU would be the first items to check in that order. Should be able to spot a faulty plug/coil pack by moving them to another cylinder and seeing if the fault moves with them. Good luck with your repairs, regards Damian

  • @tainchains

    Apologoes for asking for online diagnosis. My X308 was misfiring on cylinders 1-4. Most notably at 50 mph with a sometimes rough idle. It was retimed with a kit. The guy said it had jumped a little. I can still feel a small shudder at 50 mph. Its not nearly as bad. Its very light. I plan to replace the plugs and coils. Any thoughts on the problem being way better but still lightly shuddering at 50 mph?

    • @ODRModurol
      @ODRModurol  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @tainchains, sorry difficult to diagnose but doesn't sound like anything timing related. More likely to be ignition related plugs, coils or ECU. Have you tried swopping the coil packs over and see it the issue moves to the other cylinders? regards Damian

  • @tainchains

    Is it neccesary to replace the harmonic balancer bolt during this repair. I have heard that it is. The problem is we do not have a replacement and I'm not sure how long it will be to get one.

    • @ODRModurol
      @ODRModurol  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @tainchains, It is good practice to renew the bolt as due to the large amount of torque required the threads could be stretched or weakened. That said if it has stretched the threads it will be quite clear and you won't be able to use. It is a large bolt and if it hasn't stretched you should be able to feel for this when reusing it. Not recommended but you might get away with it in the short term. Hope that helps, regards Damian

      Alexander, this video was prompted by you’re feedback about the process and why we need to do certain things. Thanks for the push. There is no definitive answers to changing the timing gear, this is the first time the engines have existed and run for this length of time. I believe it’s reasonable to assume they will last 200,000 miles or 20 years which ever is soonest. But no data. What we can say the failure does cause issues and if you change it you should be ok for a further 20 years or 200, 000miles. Hope that helps. Thanks for the support, regards Damian

    Had another question. My 2001 Vanden Plas X308 was retimed with a kit by a work at home mechanic. I have no idea how these are to be timed. It was misfiring on one entire side cylinders 1-4 before it was redone with a new timing kit. I'm wondering it the chains were put on incorrectly because it seems to have lost some compression and power although the misfires have mostly gone and not no misfire codes. I can still feel a slight misfire around 50-60 MPH. I replaced the plugs and the coils. But still same thing. How can you know for sure if the timing is off?

    • @ODRModurol
      @ODRModurol  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @tainchains, the cams and crank are both locked in position when you fit the new chains. Its unlikely to have been fitted incorrectly. Might be something else. Compression loss could be due to bore wear of the nikasil coating (if yours is the early engine AJ26). sorry you don't seem to be having any joy with your engine, regards Damian

      Willyman, if tensioners haven’t been changed you should be able to negotiate around that being urgently required. Also if it hasn’t had a gearbox oil and filter change. Metal tensioners were built into engines assembled after 13th August 2001. Need to balance these items against the cost of this car and a similar post metal tensioners car. If you get to Post MY2003 XKR’s all have 4.2 litres, 6 speed auto and brembo brakes, generally better specs. Hope that helps and good look with your purchase. Thanks for the comment regards Damian

    I have a 2001xk8 convertible 170000 miles I changed oil mobile 5w 30w synthetic I could here slight rattle on start up checked secondary tensioner new style very clean. Now I here a loud metal knock not consistent. Can this be the vvt silonod also timing cover inside on outer edges is like washed clean like oils hitting it and making it shine. Any suggestions low budget ordered silonod. Next 10w40w oil clean slump pump.

      Robert, slightly thicker 10W40 oil is going to help a bit. Might be the seals within the VVT units themselves not holding pressure. Take a look at this video, is it a similar noise, regards Damian Video link th-cam.com/video/0BAtzYHMLdE/w-d-xo.html

      @@ODRModurol iv ordered new silonod I'll install it. I'm still dropping pan to check for anything. And I've got a tethiscope I'm almost positive it's the VVT. And the shiny side of the timing cover is really strange oil could be shooting out of the seals of the VVT. I'll photo the inside and post it. May help someone out. Could be mistaken for rod.

    I have read so many different dates about when the timing chains need to be replaced as in most people say if you have a 2002 you have the new not plastic ones others say 2001 others say at the end of 2002 is when they started putting the improved ones in what is the truth?

      Eric, the correct answer is the manufacturing date of the engine and not the car. Jaguars AJV8 engine was upgraded to the metal tensioners on 13th August 2001 at 00:00 hrs. The engine number 0108130000 onwards. This was used in several Jaguar models. This is approx model year 2002 for the XK8/R but practically to engine upgrade wasn't coordinated accurately with the XK8 MY upgrade. The only way to be sure is to inspect the Engine number on the engine block. Anything after 0108130000 has metal tensioners. Although the engine uses chains rather than rubber timing belts they do stretch over time. They last a lot longer than belts but the stretch must have some effect on the timing and efficiency. Hope that helps and thanks for the comment regards Damian. Might suggest watching this videoth-cam.com/video/f3wAGev6tPQ/w-d-xo.html

      @@ODRModurol I did some research on my engine I can't remember what I looked at but I know I didn't look at the serial number in the engine itself but I came to the conclusion my engine was built to May 2002, My car is a 2002.

      @@ODRModurol it's pretty safe to say that if I do not see my inches serial number up top by the thermostat housing area that it is safe for plastic tensioners.

    When you talk about problems with primaries now, would this also include later built (like '04 built) engines when they start racking up miles a few years from now? Or maybe I should ask, how many miles are the primaries good for on later engines?

    • @ODRModurol

      Andork, yes I was talking generally about all the timing gear including the metal tensions. No one really knows as it’s relatively new ground. I think a replacement period of 200,000 miles or 20 years which ever is earlier is reasonable. It is worth noting that the consequence of failure is quite high and therefore best to be cautious. If you do change them all you probably won’t need to worry about them for another 20 years. No definitive answer but hope that helps. Thanks for the comment regards Damian

      John, Would suggest taking a look at SNG Barratt website. They are Jaguar classic parts specialists and offer a selection of timing parts and kits for the X100. They sell either OEM or aftermarket OEM quality just choose what you want or can afford. However, I generally get Jag part numbers from SNG B and put it into Ebay to see if you can by the same cheaper. Sometimes you can find the same cheaper but often they are surprisingly competitive. I will put some links below as examples (PS please input your own cars details to ensure compatibility). Thanks for the comment regard Damian
