  • Dr. Matthew Weiner is an author and bariatric surgeon who specializes in the treatment of obesity. His practice is located in Tucson Arizona.
    Dr. Weiner graduated from the University of Michigan medical school in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He completed his general surgery residency at New York University Hospital in New York City. He practiced in suburban Detroit for 12 years before moving to Tucson in 2019 where he, together with Dr. Guillermo Higa, founded Tucson Weight Loss Surgery.
    In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Weiner is the Director of Bariatric Surgery and the Medical Director of Telemedicine at Tucson Medical Center. He is an active member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS) and is a past President of the Michigan State chapter a Bariatric Surgeons.
    Dr. Weiner has performed more than 2000 bariatric surgeries since joining his first practice in 2006 and frequently does complicated revision surgery. He also performs general surgery with an interest in stomach and small intestine surgery along with complex hernia repair.
    In his first book, A Pound of Cure, Dr. Weiner debunks the traditional understanding of calorie balance driving weight loss and offers a non-surgical solution to those suffering from obesity through nutritional stability.
    His second book, How Weight Loss Surgery Really Works: And How to Make it Work for You, is now available on Amazon in paperback and kindle. In this book, Dr. Weiner describes how the hormonal changes that alter your brain, fat stores and hunger signals are the most important component of weight loss surgery, rather than the portion control effects that have been emphasized in the past.
    A third publication called The Bariatric Diet Guide And Cookbook is a cookbook for bariatric patients that will offer recipes and guidance on the most effective post-surgical diet. It’s set to be published in May 2021 and is available for pre-order at most online bookstores.
    On his website, www.poundofcureweightloss.com, he offers more than 150 videos on a wide array of nutritional and bariatric topics. Lesson plans range from, “Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery” to “The Metabolic Reset Diet” including recipes and meal plans.
    Dr. Weiner is licensed to practice in both Arizona and Michigan and even offers Telemedicine appointments. For more information call his office at (520) 420-1000 or check out his many resources below. For more videos and Facebook Live events, subscribe to his TH-cam channel.

    I have heard people say this before, but something about your delivery of this message, has made me understand why eating whole foods is the way to heal myself. I has VSG 3 years ago, lost 100lbs, and have started to regain. This presentation is excellent, because it tells people why they may or may not be seeing the results they want. It's not a message to just do this because "I said so." Also, your approach doesn't feel like an attack on my character. That means the world.

    After watching your videos, then finally this video, I purchased your book, A Pound of Cure. I'm not even done with page 4 and I'm fighting to hold back the tears. I've felt like a failure, glutton, etc. for 30 of my 45 years after trying so long to lose the weight and dieting up to 45 BMI. I thought it was my fault. I thought I wasn't faithful enough in my Christianity. Thought a whole bunch of things - none of them right. I had vsg last week, and while my surgeon and office staff, and hospital have been great, I never understood fully what was really going on with me until reading your book - and I'm not even done! Thank you so much for this life changing way of thinking! This will help me explain to my friends and family why I really needed the surgery.

    I'm so glad you are bringing this up because before my surgery, even with excessive workouts, I would literally have to starve to lose weight. When I was bullemic, I still had extra fat on my body. I have always had tons of muscle mass for a female. I look very good at 170lbs. I also am very strong and can lift things most men can only lift. I have very wide hips and thinner waist. I'm shaped like an hour glass and my shoulders are very broad and my thighs and butt are very thick and muscular. I put on weight Soooo easy and am always hungry. I'm so glad I found these videos.

    I am so disappointed he Moved his practice to Arizona. I live in Michigan and I would love to have him as my doctor. My current doctor is very much a calorie counter low carb exercise kind of doctor even though I’m 55 and obese. I don’t feel that I’m heard by him. But with my insurance he’s the only doctor I can see.

    I had VSG at 102kg and am now 80kg 4 months later and now weight loss has really slowed. I am going to start at the gym next week to try to increase my metabolism. I need to lose another 20kg. It’s definitely fustrating. I also love salad and vegetable and don’t like sweets. Even pre op I ate less than my relatives but was much fatter.

    I totally agree with everything you have said in your videos. I find your method similar to Haylie Pomroy, she is the author of the book "Fast Metabolism Diet". I am curious to know why this isn't taught in nutrition classes. I have consulted with many dietitians, and kinesiologists, and they all think it is the simple math of the calories.

    What do you think of keto after gastric bypass? Coupled with either intermittent fasting or occasional egg/fat fasts?

    • @apoundofcure
      @apoundofcure  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      keto is fine as long as you don't eat too much animal protein. Also, keto/atkins/paleo often eliminates beans and fruit which I think is a mistake. Not a fan of fasting, don't think it's necessary or sustainable

    I'm not so sure I agree with this, But I'll never argue against eating unprocessed foods. I do think counting calories is a valid strategy to lose weight though. It is crazy how sometimes you find people that hate natural foods so much that they cry like children when confronted with vegetables.

    Would you recommend that lap band patients follow your advice too?

    • @apoundofcure
      @apoundofcure  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's hard for many lap band patients to eat fruits and vegetables, so when I work with lap band patients, I typically loosen the band enough to ensure that they can eat 1-2 lbs of vegetables a day

    • @ceecee76
      @ceecee76 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dr. Matthew Weiner I can eat fruit and veg no problem but would struggle to get that volume in. My weight loss has stalled, however, despite losing 70lbs already, but I really haven't found a consistent way to lose since being banded in Spet 14. I am going to try this way of eating instead of focusing on animal based proteins and see if it makes a difference. I also calorie count and limit it to 1200 per day. I think I might stop focusing on that too and just focus on eating the way you advocate till I'm satisfied and see if the change of diet is the key to kickstarting my loss again. I still have around another 50-70 to lose and would like to do it this year. Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it.

    Hi. I had vsg over 2 years ago and have lost 168 pounds in all. I am a normal BMI and weight but still borderline of overweight, my bmi is 24. I still want to lose only about 10 more pounds. I have been in maintenance for a year and a half. I'm following this way of eating and haven't gained or lost anything. I pretty much ate healthy anyway, I'm just including more veggies. Anyway do you think my body had reached the point where it wont lose anymore regardless, like its happy place? I know this way of eating works well with obese patients, but if your bmi is normal, will it work to lose more weight or at some point does weight loss stop?

    • @apoundofcure
      @apoundofcure  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The truth is you are very unlikely to lose more weight, you've had an amazing response and should focus your energies on weight maintenance, not additional weight loss.

    Starvation does work though. You see a lot of people who dramatically lose weight from starvation, and that's what bariatric surgery is in essence also. The problem is you have to stay on a low calorie diet for the rest of your life to prevent a rebound.

      As the stomach naturally stretches out the goal is go back to eating all you want, of veggies, like spinach, squash, broccoli, cauliflower... with nuts or nut flour, beans and whole grains, drinking plenty of water, very little meat, avoid processed food.

    Dr Weiner I am 5 weeks post op in Australia have a sleeve. Here in Australia they say that we should have 5 veg 2 fruit a day but with a sleeve its not really possible. How much should we eat I have at present only 1 teaspoon of mixed vege and fruit maybe a slice of peach or a small mandarine is that enough?

    • @apoundofcure
      @apoundofcure  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Make sure you have your labs drawn - this is the best way to gauge whether or not you're eating enough. Around a year or so after surgery, you'll be able to get to the 5 veg/2 fruit per day rule.

      could be a food quality issue. are you able to eat nonstarchy vegetables? do you ever get dumping syndrome? with the sleeve i think the risk of dumping is lower, with the intact pyloris. try juicing vegetables that aren't high in sugar. if you have the vitamins,, minerals, and phytonutrients your body needs it can help blunt the hunger. if i eat crap (i'm pre-surgery) i could eat all day and still be hungry. if i eat nutrient dense food it takes the edge off significantly.

      My first 2 surgeries did not help me to lose weight. Lap Band only lost 20 pounds and then I had it opened up completely and gained 40 pounds. I then had the sleeve and lost only 40 pounds and last year I had the duodenal switch and have lost 45 pounds; first time under 200 pounds in 23 years. I just hit a plateau and I found these TH-cam sessions. As I do you have a malabsorption problem and you should try the vegetable first diet that Dr. Weiner is discussing. It starts your metabolism back to working and you will start back to losing weight again. You should also find a doctor who can complete your duodenal switch surgery. The sleeve is part of the surgery I and my daughter had but do to your malabsorption problem the sleeve alone without the switch will not work. Maybe you should give it a try and see if your insurance will pay for you completing the SIPS Duodenal Switch surgery. Mine did.

    I had no restriction whats so ever. I work in corrections and I can easily eat 16oz of chicken, boild eggs, and 2 liters of water. I stoped loosing weight. I see my Dr in two months if I dont see more results I will demand him to to redo my surgery. I allready told him I was not happy with my results. Disagree. The concept may be oversimplified, but how can you say who is genetically programmed to be this when the rates of obesity have recently risen? The body's thermostat can be reset just as you said. You don't have to be genetically lean to apply this concept. The problem becomes when people decrease their calories TOO much and reset their thermostats, or otherwise have life events which cause a decrease in metabolism.

    can't you reach the peak of starvation mode than stay constant or lose little weight than start deit with exercise again to reach starvation and lose lots of fat? you said 5% to 10% than its over but you can lose 10% than reset your set point than start again with "starvation"?

      Lots of questions here - the important point is to move your set point, not fight against it
