I'm pretty sure the lore about the tessaract vault says that the c'than shard is constantly destroying the vault, only for it to be repairing itself constantly. Thats the reason why there are the cubes on the inside.

Honestly, I like the piloted look, particularly from a lore perspective: The Triarch stalkers are meant to be a vehicle, built by individual dynasties for the Praetorians to tempt them into fighting alongside that dynasty. A case of "Here's a powerful walker for you if you fight with us," rather than "Why don't we just use this thing ourselves since it doesn't need a pilot?" As for the Destroyers, that being a result of the Destroyer curse explains why they willing upgrade themselves in a way most Necrons find abhorrent. As for the pilots in things like the Barges and arks, they are intergrated enough for me not to have an issue, and keep in mind that Destroyers are considered diseased and are hated, so why would they want to imitate something disgusting?

I've been playing Necrons since I got into 8th edition (having gotten back into the hobby after stopping before 5th), and i'm slowly collecting every necron model in the range. I personally love the green tubes and the crystal of the monolith, but i get what you mean. Even though I love all the models you say have an Immortal as the starting point (i.e. destroyers), i'm personally not a fan of the immortals themselves, at least in their current format. They feel like they overtook the classic warriors as the default troop choice.

The big crystal is actually my favourite feature on the monolith. Just looking at it you instantly know it’s something that radiates intense power. And that’s the great thing about the faction design in general I think; high detail or low detail, they always have a very concise feel.

    @tombouric 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The first time I saw the Necrons (from memory) was when GW did a triple battle report to show off a new commissar model in White Dwarf.
The first battle report was the Commissar (they gave him a name, though I can't remember what it was) having to escape from a jungle with some Catachans as Necrons were waking up.
The Necrons felt properly terrifying, as even though the IG player one it was only because they evaced the Commissar out with a Valkryie. Meanwhile the Necrons had mean marching inexorably forwards, tanking insane amounts of damage and flaying alive Catachans with their Gauss rifles with every burst. I can still remember feeling the panic of the monolith starting to awaken; from here on out, Necrons to me always had the most and the best doomsday weapons.
The second time I'd met them was in the Fall of Damnos, both in the 5e Codex and in the novel. I'm not ashamed to admit that I really like Ultramarines even if they are overexposed, so seeing them struggle and ultimately lose the battle against the Necrons had this shocking yet appropriate feel to me. It really felt like any Imperial colony that had the misfortune of being on a Tomb World was doomed from the start. How do you fight something that's hard to kill, extremely destructive, numerous and for good measure is embedded in the planet itself? What made it even better was that in the novel the Necron POVs were actually compellingly written, humanised without sacrificing that alien, inhuman element.
Long story short of this ramble; I really like the old Necron models, even if I'm never going to buy them. For me, a true Necron army is always going to be at least partially composed of Warriors, Immortals, Destroyers, Flayers and Monoliths. Some of them do need to be redone though, which considering the new Illuminor Szeras I hope happens.
I even prefer the old Wraith over the new one; the old one had a nice sinuous, agile feel, which worked really well with what it's supposed to do. The newer one lacks that a tiny bit, even if it is well-crafted.
I will say this for the newer stuff: GW absolutely nailed making each named character look and feel different, such that I would be able to distinguish who they are or at the least guess who they are. The Diviner looks like he's been driven mad by prophecies, which I quite like.
And finally, I do miss the Pariahs. The Lychguard are fine, and I like how they have a midway point in ostentatious between the lowly Warrior and the noble Lords, but the Pariahs were just so cool in look and concept. Necron weapons were already terrifying enough in how they could kill you, but the idea that having a special gene could cause them to abduct you and turn you into one of them...
Great video as always, although I am disappointing that I can't work in a pun here. I C'tan be losing my touch...

I agree with you on a lot of these. As a Necron player myself though I can tell you the models have a lot of logic to them. Dynasty units get rules benefits that match each but Canoptek and Triarch units do not. Also Canoptek and Triarch units have those keywords and the models do help reflect the roles. A Triarch pilot helps show a vehicle isn't part of a Dynasty and also not a Canoptek automata. Also the "Arks" are like Egyptian boats, not Viking, similar to Greek triremes. They look cool to me.

i agree with your integration thinking for necrons
one of my biggest irks with the piloted kits is why do they need chairs ?
they have bodies of metal that never get tired, sore or feel anything
sitting would be such an obsolete concept to a necron, they would clamp in or integrate (like the destroyers)
if i was to do necrons, id spend a lot of time removing all chairs and having a more machine thinking view of pilots
imagine how cool the command platform would look without the goofy pilots under the commander and if the commander was standing tall and proud while locked into a support pillar or two behind him
then for the ghost/doom ark, id flip them around, the transport ship, should have all the necrons underneath just hanging limp like dolls of death waiting for activation and deployment
(some what like the droid troop transports in starwars, they were stored in racks)
and the doom ark should have that giant cannon up high for a good field of view, while the pilot on both is again integrated and not just chillin on a chair
id also remove the font norse esq nose thing and put a pair of mini triangular obelisks down there to finalize the necron vibe
the tomb blades are another great example of how its almost there , just remove the chair, have the arms and legs of the pilot hanging limp
he is completely jacked in and would be using all of his senses natively through the tomb blade chassis , he has no use for his arms and legs
so they would let them hang and lock them in position or clamp them, either way, it would be 1000% more grotesquely machine-alien to have some limp, dead looking metal skeleton flying at you with blades and cannons, then if they chassis is damaged and the pilot ejected, it would just drop out the bottom, stand up and start murdering ... scary

Mm favorite character, I've bought and painted them all, and I'll say Illuminor Szeras and the Nemasor Zandrekh where the most fun of the bunch to paint along with the nightbringer, but posing wise Zandrekh is among my favorites. As for the Vault and Obelisk the Vault is almost always better thanks to the stat block and the fact it gets the powers of the C'Tan but more. A favored tactic I've seen with it is to let the Deciever pick it up and toss it into enemy lines so once its the opponents turn after its done its thing, when it goes nuclear it takes the enemy with it.

So much of my older model design nostalgia stems from the original Dawn of War games. Of the older designs that still exist in print, they all look so wonky but I love them. But I can live with most of the redesigns. Except for the Broadside. The shoulder-mounted missile fisted walking artillery platform looked better than the underslung Gatling gun look it has now.

  • @perfectcell8130
    @perfectcell8130 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Regarding the thing in the front and sides of the Ghost Ark - you are correct. Old viking longships often had a wooden depiction of a dragon in the front :)
EDIT: And can perhaps the reason for it looking so "off" is because the robotic Egyptians are roaming around in Hypercomplicated norse boats.

As an OG Necron player, the small thing that is bugging me a bit atm, is that there are now two different rods between the gauss flayer and gauss blaster. It should be the same technology, but the gauss blaster just has two, where the flayer has one. Also, the gauss flayers on the Ghost/Doomsday ark look different from the same weapon the warriors are carrying. It's a small thing, but that bugs me.
The Immortals and deathmarks still look amazing. I have converted my immortals to give them the deathmark backpiece which i think looks awesome. This meant it didn't have the cable leading up to the weapon. That gave me a bit more wiggle room to position the guns in the (what I call) "minigun pose" which I really like. I would really like to see an update mostly to the warriors, flayed ones and destroyers. (+ obviously bring back the Pariahs, as I still have a unit of 10 of them that I'm atm using as warscythe lychguard)
There is also so much cool "in-action" poses that you can do with the addition of a new C'tan shard. With their reality bending powers, you can do a lot of fun things with their model.
Vargard Obyron is definitely one of my favourite models as well. He really looks very badass. As in, it doesn't matter who you (think you) are, but you're not getting past him...

The Triarch stalker is perhaps my favorite model, but I remember how much of a pain it was to build. I struggled more than that model with any other, though that was entirely with the cockpit section. Might just be me though, sort of like how warrior limbs never feel like cooperating when I'm trying to get them to stick. Spyders are the easiest for me to build conversely, and I always find the experience enjoyable. On the monolith, I have to agree with you, it looks quite dated and I was never really fond of the crystal. On the Doom scythe, I also agree with you, and love closed cockpits better too, though I should mention lorewise there is a force field there in books like the Carnac campaign. I agree on the arks to, and wish the transport looked a lot more solid like the old warbarque thing for epic (look it up and you should find a pic) were, sort of like a long version of a monolith. Flayed ones have always been in a weird spot, especially lore wise, in a shooty army, and their not great rules and sculpts don't help. But yeah of all updated models Szeras's trip to the gym is definitely the best. Good vidya.

I created a Necron army a few years ago of a knightly dynasty that believe in honour and saving the innocent above all else, to the exasperation of the Triarch Praetorians sent to babysit them, as they will abandon missions to rush off and help some random planet on a whim. I converted the heads to look like helmets with a vertical slit in place of the mouths, and shortened the oversized Dispersion Shields. The army (aside from characters) is entirely comprised of Lychguard, each bearing their own personal heraldry, and the aforementioned Triarch Praetorians. They refuse to use Necron Warriors as they think it dishonourable to allow the lower classes to fight, which means that back home they have rank upon rank of Necron Warriors stood their gathering dust because they are not being allowed to carry out what is literally their only remaining purpose in existence. It was by far my cheapest 2,000 point army - under £250.

Think the main reason the overlord’s scythe is facing backwards because then it’s actually over the base, if it faced any other way it would be a fuckng nightmare to store
