Very good, respectful interview. Thank you, Tom, for interviewing this very sad stepfather that happens to be a well-known broadcaster. It was very informative and in good taste.
Keith is doing a diplomatic job of not talking about the utter frustration of dealing with what must have been MP's very difficult behaviors, stubborn refusal to even discuss his addiction, the constant turmoil....the anger. No one who's dealt with an addict can deny all of those.......Doesnt mean you dont love them, but at times you reach the end of your rope.
Yes, very diplomatic. Because when your child is an addict it consumes you. I like the saying that “ You can only be as happy as the least happy of your children”.
He doesn't sound to me like he's suffered a loss. He's protecting his wife who put Matthew on barbiturates for colic when he was 30 days old. Don't take my word for it. TH-cam it yourself.

@@karamacmillan4757 I feel that Keith is protecting Matthew’s mother as well, but just in general because Matthew was a long time addict and wrote about how difficult it was when his mother married Keith and how he had always had a difficult relationship with his mom. I don’t blame the mother for putting Matthew on barbiturates, since that is what she was told. I am simply stating that I felt that Keith wanted to make sure the audience saw Matthew as an addict and not as the troubled son of a mother with whom he had a difficult relationship and a stepfather who cared mainly for his wife.
I’m very sorry Keith. I was a fan of his work & yours I’m so sorry for you & your wife’s loss. May Mathew be at peace & may you all someday meet again , God bless.

I read Matthew’s book and my heart broke. I’ll never forget the part where he said “when watching Friends, if I was heavy it was alcohol. If I was thin, it was drugs.” Such a loss.😢
We never know what people are going through. He let us into his controlling addictions in his biography. I kept cheering him on while I was reading, hoping he would finally kick his habits but as the reading continued I realized how much drugs and alcohol can take over a person and they really don't have a choice in the matter. I believe he hated his addictions and really wanted to be rid of them but for him it just wasn't going to happen. So sad, a wonderful person's life cut short. RIP Matthew.
I was really surprised when he said that. If public figures have found the courage , and realize they have bottomed out, forcing them to desperately seek treatment, they usually put on the weight their addiction took from them. So when I see someone in recovery carrying a weight gain, I’m always happy for them, thinking the treatment has worked. When Matthew said when he had weight on, that meant he was drinking, it both surprised and saddened me. I’ve lost a few friends to addiction, and it’s so hard on their families and true friends. I had to distance myself from a few friends who later died from addiction. There’s guilt, sadness at the loss of really deep, smart, people, but mostly frustration and anger at the sheer waste of lovely friends who were so imprisoned by addiction they couldn’t beat it. We really suffer in Canada from far too few treatment centres, and most of them rush addicts though their programs, often detoxing far too fast, and not treating the underlying problems which caused the addiction in the first place. Then no follow up for support. Our whole attitude seems wrong to me
The sign saying “Unaccompanied minor” at the beginning of his book was what got me as he sat alone on air flights going quite a distance from one parent to the other.
My dear brother passed away in 2019. It was a drug and alcohol related accident. Whenever I saw an interview with Matthew, the thoughts of my brother would surface. I saw in Matthew what I saw in my brother. I learned a great deal in all of the turmoil. The important thing is: They are missed and they are loved.
Thank you for this interview. The real story and a compassionate tribute to Matthew. His life was meaningful and he was loved. Keith is a very special man.
Keith seems like a wonderful man and a loving stepfather. I’m so sorry for his and Suzanne’s loss. I can’t imagine the stress and worry they endured for years.
Matthew had his struggles as do many people in this world, but at his best he still was able to put one more positive thing in this world even if that meant him not being here anymore. His family is brave for going forward with what he ultimately wanted to do next which was help people.
Noo I think you need to read up. Perry was murdered. There was a case that opened up. His doctor was actually charged with involuntary manslaughter. Yea Perry was killed. It wasn’t just “he had his struggles.” He did but we don’t even know serious his addiction was this time. His doctor committed severe malpractice & that’s why Matthew Perry is dead.
@@cece8095 and he isn’t the only ‘celebrity’ to have addition/other issues. I wasn’t a fan of Matthew, but i hope all of those who contributed to his death/murder are convicted and have time in prison.
The creepy assistant who enabled the ketamine addiction, could have reached out to his family or agent (he used to work for the agent) to say Matthew had relapsed, he did nothing. Instead he Shot him up and left Matthew in the hot tub and went out for two hours, even though he had found him unconscious twice before. When he got home he found Matthew dead and spent 30 minutes removing any drug paraphernalia before ringing 911. He then turns up at Matthew’s funeral mixing with family and friends and was even invited to the private burial, knowing full well his involvement in Matthew’s death. What a horrible piece of scum

Matthew Perry couldn't of asked for someone better to tell his life story.. Keith Morrison you have the most wonderful and calming voice no wonder everyone loves watching dateline... Proud to be a Canadian and you should run for prime minister Keith
I had just finished his book when he passed. I felt his optimism and had high hopes for him. May he rest in peace-and may those who exploited his addiction rot.
Keith has such a smooth soothing voice . Matthew Perry was so lucky he looked beyond his death and helped to find those drs. Guilty of supplying him drugs. Thank you Keith. You are wonderful.
Thank you for doing this interview. I’ve read a lot about Matthew Perry, but hearing from family members is something all people deeply appreciate. My thoughts and prayers for you and I hope it can help people trapped in addiction, to get out of that prison, to cry for help, and to receive love.
What a lovely, lovely man. I know he is Matthews Stepdad, but Matthew shares a lot of Keiths mannerisms. It's heartbreaking stuff. Keith has a good understanding of addiction and the addict and the realities, and the heartbreak of dealing with that. Sincere condolences and best wishes to Keith and Matthews Mother and sister.
Mr. Keith Morrison, you are such a pleasure to watch and to listen to. Your kindness and caring are so very obvious... My deepest condolences to you, Matthew's mother Susanne, his siblings, and close friends. It breaks my heart that we lost another loved one to this terrible disease.
Tom what a wonderful interviewer you are. So compassionate and gentle with a mourning family member even though he be an experienced public person, you were able to ask Keith the tough questions we all wanted to hear the answers to. You are a gift Tom.
I love listening to Matthew's voice on his audiobook . Every night lately I've gone to sleep listening to him . He had everything going for him - looks, talent ,great personality, loving family ,success. It's an enormous loss and I am so very sad for his mother .
A month isn’t long enough. My husband was a brilliant man; he owned a thriving veterinary hospital for 38 years. We had the resources to afford what we believed were the best rehabs in the country, and he enjoyed many good years in recovery. But he relapsed at 64 and passed away. When someone is triggered, it can set them off and running-it’s truly tragic. Along the way, I met several “famous” people during family weeks. It’s heartbreaking to see how addiction crosses all walks of life.
@marilynpastor6401 I'm so sorry on the loss of your beloved Husband. You're right on about Addiction effecting anyone and everyone. My Son has been in Recovery for almost 20 yrs. He overdosed twice in that time but was saved.
A month is just long enough to get the drugs out of your system and to be determined to find drugs the minute you get out. What saved my daughter’s life was eight months. And that happened only because it was court ordered. She literally detoxed and started thinking normally and able to appreciate what she was learning.
This Keith guy is just something and I think Matthew really appreciated him and loved him deeply and I can see why. He loved Mathew so much and he explained everything so well that they went trough and it is so sad. But M. P. was a king and to me will always be. He was an addict but he was great person, smart and funny.
It’s one of the hardest parts of loving an addict. They are so often WONDERFUL people. I lost one last year. God , she funny, loving, soooo kind! She was a true blue friend!! Never walked into my house empty handed. She was so much fun! But she never got to a place where she could give up the drink. I miss her every single day.
Anyone who has lost a child feels a special, deep-seated sorrow and grief that can’t be described. I feel, not only for Keith, but his wife, who birthed Matthew. I know her pain. May Matthew Rest In Peace.
Thank you so much for this difficult conversation Tom and Keith. I'm sure it's a problem everywhere, but the number of options for rehabs in Canada is abysmal. Especially on the East Coast. There are literally no options at all in Newfoundland besides a 30 day alcohol treatment program, which is NOT even close to enough for opioids. I helped someone very close to me get into rehab last Christmas, and even in the very lucky situation we were in where we could pay the money to get him in right away, the only Atlantic Canadian option we could find was 50 days(still not long enough). THEN after all that hard hard hard work he put in, there was only ONE safe, sober living option in the province of Newfoundland which had a 2.5 month wait time before he was able to get in even after successfully completing the rehab program. Absolutely ridiculous. When someone makes the decision that they are ready to get help, we need to be able to provide them help IMMEDIATELY, and then the only path to success is to provide supportive care once they come home.
The truthful interview helps all of us work and understand drug addiction. How wonderful that Mr. Morrison articulately shares how many millions need the help, care, and treatment for addiction. His empathy is deeply felt.
As a mother of an addict, I know this all too well. Thank you Mr Morrison for being an amazing stepfather. Mathew would be proud of his foundation. Thank you
My sincere condolences to the entire family. I was very lucky to meet Matthew 1 day when he came to pick up his little sister from Nursery School while on hiatus from Friends. Matthew was friendly & seemed down to earth at our meeting. I think the new Foundation in his name & memory is very fitting. GOD speed to all.
I’ve always been so fond of Keith and any show or documentary he narrates. He’s a man of so much character, and it goes to show that anyone can deal with addiction in a family member but still are unable to get them to stop. It has to be the addicts decision and work, unfortunately 😢. I have so much respect for Keith to talk about this so honestly. I pray for their pain and sadness
Another excellent, intelligent, thoughtful and sincere interview. Tom Power, no matter the guest(s), your interviews are always top-notch. You're a fine man! Cheers from Montreal. Keith Morrison, also a fine man. The resigned sadness in him telling this story is heartbreaking, and the efforts to help others through the Foundation are admirable.
Thank you Keith Morrison and your family for starting this foundation. Your goals for the foundation for addicts is exactly what is needed in Canada. As a mother of a recovering addict , they need affordable housing and long term treatment and care. Thank you, thank you!!!❤
The loss of a child no matter what age.. is unmeasurable… deep pain.. as a mother of addict You learn that You are truly powerless to control or convince an addict to get sober/ clean.. Treating the underlying issues can help prevent relapses.. yet even then there is no guarantee… My deepest respect for Keith & Mathew’ s mother.. Love Matthew Perry. He is one of a kind. He had a caring heart, great comedic timing, and was a really good serious actor that could've soared even higher. Addiction to anything is hard to shake. Add depression and its just a downward spiral, desperate to do anything to feel better. It's a catch 22, very complex. Add people taking advantage of addicts, especially those in the medical field profiting from it, and its near impossible to overcome. These illnesses change us, mentally and physically. The hardest thing we can to do is to change ourselves for the better no matter how much we want to, even when we have all the tools to do it. Some of us just aren't blessed with enough time to make those changes, no matter who we are, how famous we are or how much money we have. We're all human. We all suffer in some way. Grace and understanding can go a long way. Wishing the best for Keith, Matt's mom, dad, and the rest of their family & friends. Peace, health and grace to all who need it. Reach out.
What a fantastically intimate interview. I just adore Keith Morrison. I've never met him in my life but he did me a HUGE favor 3 years ago and I'm forever grateful to him. He's an incredible human being. As a recovering addict myself, I'm so thankful for him sharing their story and all he's doing for my brothers and sisters. What a fabulous interview and interviewer.
I always felt that Matthew Perry was a good soul, a troubled soul but a genuinely decent man. It’s a shame the people he trusted weren’t! I hope they rot in jail! Having listened to his book, I think he’d be extremely proud of what is being done in his name. Sending hugs to both Keith and Matthew’s Mum, because words are never enough. Xxx
Great sensitive interview Tom. Matthew seemed like a very likeable guy and it's just sad what being in the throws of addiction can do to anyone. It's certainly the downside of being able to get whatever you want, regardless of how bad it is for you.
It is wonderful that they are starting the foundation for people with addiction to get meaningful help. I lost my own adult son to this scourge and he was also unable to access the kind of treatment that could have saved his life. Keith Morrison expressed so eloquently the agony that goes along with the addiction of a child - and the unimaginable pain of their loss. Thank you!!!
This interview was conducted in just the right way. Also I think the point about the lenght of a stay in rehabs seems very valid. The longer someone could stay in residential treatment, even a year or more as the way to go for a firmer chance at recovery makes sense but this has always been a matter of money and of course insurance companies. Great this was pointed out and is being worked on.
I still think of Matthew often. I don't understand why someone so talented and that earned a place on a sitcom that outlasted so many others, fell to alcohol and drugs. I thank him for giving us a great escape that good tv charcters bring us...
I'm so sorry for your loss. I know from personal experience how difficult it is to have someone you love in the throes of addiction; you know something awful is going to happen but you're helpless. And when you lose them it's doubly painful because all of the love in the world couldn't save them.
my granny buried her son when he was just 6, and they never spoke of it, my mom who was born 15 years after his death didn't know she had a brother until people from her village told her. when we went back to visit my granny, my mom told me to never ever mention my uncle in front of the family because the pain is still there. my mom doesn't feel the same hurt that my granny feels because she never got to make that emotional connection, but my granny still mourns his death almost 6 decades later.
So extremely sorry for you and your wife’s loss. Sadly my friend’s son lost his battle with addiction. He was only in his 20s. It doesn’t just kill the addict…it kills parts of the loved ones they leave behind. She naturally has never been the same as a part of her is gone. Tragically this planet just wasn’t made for some people. I am not a religious person but I consider myself spiritual. I believe we are all energy and our bodies are just a shell. I wholeheartedly believe that those departed’s energy is still with us…only now they’re free from pain whether it be mental, physical or both. It is never easy losing someone you love but we can take solace that they are finally at peace now. Sending love and prayers to Matthew’s loved ones and all whom were lucky enough to have known him. Also, he was put here for a reason….to share his extraordinary gift, his talents, with the world. He brought so much joy to people and that indeed was his purpose. Thank you Matthew for gracing us with your comedic genius. 🙏💕🙏
I had no idea of this connection between Matthew Perry & Keith Morrison. (& that Keith is Canadian - I didn't know this). What a great interview, & thanks for sharing. It's a tragic loss for any family, and I think every family is touched by some sort of addiction - close or distant. I am only familiar with my country & province, but our government's decision to close Mental Health & Addiction facilities (& sell off the lands) in the 1980s was the mistake we are paying for now with so many people self medicating & homeless on our streets. Making mistakes is a normal part of life and teaches us how to do things right. I think we need to look back at the 1980s to see where things went wrong...

But I also understand as a mother. I send so much love to his family and those that REALLY knew him and loved him 😢😢🙏🫂
Your comment is so moving. I’m so very sorry for your profound loss. I’m glad that you’ve had Matthew and his co-stars with you through your journey. I love knowing how deeply he was loved by so, so many.
Sending love to you and your family.❤
@@Karen-m2d1tthat's so very kind.. thank you 💕
@@Einalem515 thank you 💕
Thank you for speaking to Keith with kindness and caring. His grieving is evident and you handled it most lovely.❤
Truly really diplomatic. I miss Matthew Perry and I sooo feel for Mr. Morrison and his dear wife. 😭😢😭😭
Keith lives in my neighborhood . See him walking the dog all the time. Really nice guy. So sorry for his loss.
Where are you?
He doesn't sound to me like he's suffered a loss. He's protecting his wife who put Matthew on barbiturates for colic when he was 30 days old. Don't take my word for it. TH-cam it yourself.
@@karamacmillan4757hows that her fault that was the norm back then they probably didnt know the side effects of it and who knows if that effected him into adulthood
LOVE HIM
I’m very sorry Keith. I was a fan of his work & yours I’m so sorry for you & your wife’s loss. May Mathew be at peace & may you all someday meet again , God bless.
Keith’s voice is super calming and comforting. I could listen to Dateline episodes all day when he’s talking!!
He acts as a gentlemen. Old school. Young men listen this man will teach one how to speak.
I've never met Matthew, so it's astounding to me how very, very much I miss him, but I do. So glad he was in my life through my television screen.
RIP Matty 🩵
What a jewel in our 'crown' you are Tom Power-empathy, intellect, humility and decency readily at hand with every interview you give. Thank You.
This is a beautiful and painful interview and I'm forever grateful that it's available. As someone who struggles, these things truly help. so Thank you and I'm sorry to everyone affected by struggles of all kinds
Thank you, Tom, for this sit-down with Keith....I just still miss Mathew; I adored him so much. Love to his whole family..
We love you Keith! RIP Matt!❤
Our whole attitude seems wrong to me
Beautifully said.
The sign saying “Unaccompanied minor” at the beginning of his book was what got me as he sat alone on air flights going quite a distance from one parent to the other.
Sorry for your great loss ,no one chooses to be a addict ,RIP Matthew 🇨🇦😔
My dear brother passed away in 2019. It was a drug and alcohol related accident. Whenever I saw an interview with Matthew, the thoughts of my brother would surface. I saw in Matthew what I saw in my brother. I learned a great deal in all of the turmoil. The important thing is: They are missed and they are loved.
Beautifully stated..💓💔
❤
Thank you for this interview. The real story and a compassionate tribute to Matthew. His life was meaningful and he was loved. Keith is a very special man.
That he is...

Yea but he has a lot of money so poor poor him
Thank you Keith your love and pain for the loss of Mathew. The foundation is going to be a great asset for those with addiction ❤️🇨🇦
Keith Morrison is my favorite to watch on Dateline. I didn't know he is a Canadian Broadcaster. I'm so sorry for your loss. 😢
22:49 I have so much love for this man on a professional level but even more so as I have seen the personal side now. That was a Great interviewer also. My condolences to his family. #ripmatthewperry ❤
The honesty will be beneficial to everyone trying to understand this disease. Thank you for your honesty and vulnerability.
Keith has such a smooth soothing voice . Matthew Perry was so lucky he looked beyond his death and helped to find those drs. Guilty of supplying him drugs. Thank you Keith. You are wonderful.
Great interview. I have watched Keith Morrison's interviews for years. Keith's thoughts about Matthew are touching, and insightful.
You never know what people are dealing with I do feel for his family. I have lost a child so I feel their pain and Keith said it well.
I’ve always loved Mr Morrison and Matthew Perry it’s nice to know he truly loved him. Matthew your still missed you left your mark Matty
He is my absolute favorite crime reporter!
Umm, not looks
The day I finished the book, I said “he’s not going to make it” and he died the next day. Very sad
@@rm61368 He was handsome as hell!

He was Darling❤
It does. Very sad. I’m sorry for your loss 🙏. Lost my nephew 5/8/2023. Age 38. Meth.
Keith has been on TV for a long time. It's either Dateline or 48 Hours
Keith Morrison is a remarkable stepdad.
Good interview. Thanks Keith, for opening up about Matthew, his death, and you and your wife’s feelings. I also learned a new word…venality.
Keith Morrison is a class act!! 🥰
Yes he is, always has been ♥️
Anyone who has lost a child feels a special, deep-seated sorrow and grief that can’t be described. I feel, not only for Keith, but his wife, who birthed Matthew. I know her pain. May Matthew Rest In Peace.
@marpel1017 bless you with comfort dear lady🫶
What a great compassionate interviewer just like Keith .M. really sad when anyone looses their kid ,bio or step !
Thank you
Such a well spoken captivating man. ❤️ for you and your family.
Keith is always a class interview. So sorry about Matthew 💔 Stay amazing
A classy interview with true empathy.
Thank you Keith Morrison and your family for starting this foundation. Your goals for the foundation for addicts is exactly what is needed in Canada. As a mother of a recovering addict , they need affordable housing and long term treatment and care. Thank you, thank you!!!❤
I had NO idea that two such awesome people I’ve watched separately for years are related. What a heartbreak. I’m so sorry, Keith.
What an honorable Man.. thank you all for sharing this!
Good interview! Keith so sorry for your loss!😢 was a fan of Matthew
I love Keith! He’s the only one I like to listen to and watch on the crime shows. Well, I love me some Kenda too
Love Keith Morrison, he's Magnificent ❤
I always watched Matthew on Friends and in various movies because his talent made me feel good.. So, I continue to do that- Matthew's talent was SO unique and incredible!! I am so sad that he lost his battle, I feel deeply for his family- and I am grateful that his talent lives on💔♥️
I think Matthew's Extreme Loveliness as served us a great wake up call....Just Precious....THANK YOUUUU FOR SHARING Mr. Morrison and Family....GOD BLESS 🙏 💞 💖
eith Morrison is very real, articulate & is in total a professional no matter what. Bravo
Sending all the love and compassion to Matthew’s mom 🙏
I myself have lost two sons. The soul always has open wounds that doesn’t heal.
🥲🥲🥲
So much RESPECT for Keith Morrison and such a great interview! Such a sad loss for his family and friends and all!
Keith Morrison has such a great presence. I once stayed at a small boutique hotel in New York, and he was in line right next to me!
Im so sorry for your loss Mr. Morrison and your family. I enjoyed watching Matthew Perry on friends . Miss his laughter
A great loss to many. Friends was a phenomenon that not many can compare. The pain in Keith's face says so much about the love he had for Matthew. 🙏
What a heartbreaking interview. Also so authentic and illustrates the struggle so many families go through.
Soo good! I love this guy
Grew up watching Keith on Canada’s old morning show, Canada AM, in the early 90s. So glad Dateline found him and gave him a larger audience. It seems he hasn’t changed a bit. 😊
