I’m a retired paramedic and I have seen addicts in all shapes, sizes colors, age groups, etc. etc. Addiction does not discriminate. He is very lucky that he could afford to go to all the treatment centers he went to. Some people aren’t so lucky. I read this book and it was fantastic. I wish him nothing but the best and it is my hope that we take addiction a lot more seriously in this country and have a better facilities for people to get well in.
I wish he'd get more political and help with the decriminalization of drugs as a first step. In my province our conservative government is building a new prison that everybody says we don't need, but as the homeless keep growing, thats the kind of housing he's thinking of. Way too many people still unbelievably think addiction is a 'choice'.
Agreed. Hes very wealthy from one mildly funny TV show and has like most addicts taken a lifetime to start dealing with their addiction. I've loved and married addicts and have a son that's an addict too. I have a very jaded view on addiction sadly. I find them all similar and self loathing and at the same time selfish. As we all know they have to get better alone and start to grow up as they never mature until they get and stay sober. This guy does sound medicated but who knows? But by saying I didn't want this says a lot. He's still in victim mode and has much work to still. And BTW blaming colic for your addiction is ridiculous. I had 2 kids with it and one is an addiction. He needs to continue to grow up and become a really good human.
@@londonwright173 Thats kind of unfair. What we know about addiction is that it affects the brain in very particular ways. Soem people can take drug a and it has no affect, others become addicts. Of couse its self - ish, when you get hit by a bus you go to the hospital. Your process of getting better is 'about you'. If you are implying addicts can never be selfless then I have a wealth of samples saying thats very wrong, in fact many addicts are fighting for legislation because of OTHER addicts. Addiction is a disease, and there is no evidence that ONLY can they get better alone, in fact thats found to be very untrue. Most addicts, unlike most of hte public, already live in a social culture of other addicts and dealers. Nothing ANYBODY does do they do alone. Addiction is now described as a disease, same with alcoholism, and thats why they have AA, which isn't great, but its supportive. Like ANYTHING in life it ultimately rests on an individual, but they certainly don't have to 'do it alone', in fact there is no reason for them to do so. I didn't listen to him talk, its the issue I'm interested in and criminalization is problem one. After that then like alcoholics we can try to deal with it in other ways. But his position is irrelevant, good luck to him, its addiction services and public policy that are the issue. As you say, INDIVIDUALLY its not like I can adopt an addict and 'turn them around', its just too much. It takes a social stance. And sadly we live in a celebrity world, so he does have a platform, and I say it because he's already DONE debates in europe on decriminalization.
In Canada we have free residential treatment centres. I’ve been 4 times. Treatment centres aren’t the solution. It gives you sometime to clear the fog but it’s recovery groups “AA, NA, CA” that saves lives. 3 years clean myself. I’ve seen countless people come in to these rooms while at treatment centres and then once the rehab stint is done, not come around anymore and then end up dead or back in prison or rehab again. AA is the only thing that works and has worked for almost 100 years. Mathew knows this well and addicts and alcoholics know this very well. It’s the ignorant public who for some reason think it’s a cult that deters sick people from walking through a door and asking for help. All AA is is 1 alcoholic helping another. There is no forced religion, no forced anything. I sat beside an atheist today, nobody cares. Once we can stop stigmatizing groups then we can really help people. But we can’t even stop stigmatizing the sick, let alone the solution. It’s obviously an anonymous program but as someone who attends meetings I can tell you that everything he is saying about addiction and the solution is coming from a place of AA. We speak a language and he is speaking it and I love it.
crazy about the doctor's prescription as an infant.... i bet his body was waiting for that NEXT addictive thing & when he got that first sip of alcohol....as he said "heaven" - so sad. but IT WAS HIS PURPOSE TO HELP OTHERS GOD BLESS HIM & RIP
‘Alcohol wants you alone, it wants you sick and then it wants to kill you’. I have borne witness to this line since I was a small child. Prayers to all those struggling with addictions.
People really nailed it when they said losing Matthew Perry felt like losing an actual friend. I feel like I knew him, even though I didn’t. He’s the only celebrity who I’ve ever felt connected to even though we never met. RIP friend. You were loved.
Matthew seemed sincere and loveable. The others, not so much. They seem like they're out for publicity now on Matthew's sad death. I love his honesty. RIP good man 😢
I celebrated 17 years clean and sober back in August but around this time last year I almost went back out, was going through a horrible time. I read Matt's book cover to cover and I credit that experience for helping to keep me sober. Rip Matt and THANK YOU
I am so very saddened that the "rest of his life" was only 11 months. He struggled so much in his life, but brought so much joy to many, myself included. He was brave to share his story. I pray it helps many people like he wanted it to. RIP Matthew. I pray God has brought you peace and comfort. Thank you for all the laughs, and I am so sorry that your life ended too soon.
I didn't follow Friends at all in the 90s but after he died I started watching videos of him talking about addiction and his struggles with it. And I found that very illuminating and revealing. I guess we should now all know why he talked with such directness and gravity in his voice about his matter - he clearly knew he was near death. And the world's lost a voice that was badly needed to shine light on this vital issue. Not one human being, not one soul, has gained anything from this person's death. We've lost, we've all lost.
Other babies may have been given this too for colic. (Phenobarbital) Not sure. Maybe this was given in the olden days before 1970. Hope it did not have long term affects on him though. May never know
From an Irish family, full of drinking, arguments, death, I am so desperately sorry that MP has come to an early end. My son is recovering, I have sent this to him. Thank you. RIP Matthew Perry.
My mother was an alcoholic and eventually died from her addiction. I found her passed away at her home. Reading about Matthew’s addiction has given me a different point of view . It’s like he’s explaining exactly how she felt , why it was so hard for her to stop. It is a massively misunderstood disease that deserves far more understanding and respect. I hope he found some peace ❤
I was touched by your message❤ after a life time of alcohol abuse I am finally 2 years sober at the age of 70. Its a miracle, and compassionate friends and family and trained support workers , are the reason I have been able to achieve my aim . To own my alcoholism was the beginning of recovery . Matthew Perry helped me a lot , witnessing some of his struggle and , in later years his path to recovery . The honesty of people like Matthew is so very brave , and helps break down the myths about addiction . Matthew brought joy and honesty as a person and I miss him even though I didn't know him. R.I.P. dear soul 🙏🙏🙏
@@frannyyamuna I have so much respect for anyone who manages to beat addiction . Even the people who try and fail , at least they tried . I grew up with addiction. It took my childhood from me . I lost my father to cancer , so I couldn’t understand why she was choosing to destroy her health . It took me a long time to realise it wasn’t her choice . It is a disease . Well done for overcoming this illness and please continue to fight on ❤️
Omg! Its like you reading my mind. My father was an alcoholic and it killed him. I have never forgave him till i read Matthews book. Its eye opening isnt it!
@@dianahalili1658 the trouble with my mother was she never admitted she had a problem . She ‘ just liked a drink ‘ so she never sought out help or even tried to detox, not once … she even turned up to my wedding drunk and made a scene . I was forced to care for her and I hated what she was doing to our family … but she was ill . I wish I knew then what I know now ! Matthews book helped me forgive and to make peace with the past . He was a wonderful human being
It's only misunderstood by those who either consciously choose not to study the massive amounts of available data on it, or who don't have the IQ to do so. He's so ridiculously far from the first addict to describe EVERY word of this. My Mom (68), and younger brother (43) both died from addiction (alcohol as the primary for both). It's a cruel, awful, heartbreaking disease. It's deeply frustrating and profoundly painful for those who love an addict. RIP to Matthew AND anyone/everyone else whose life was cut short by this tragic illness. Including your Mom... I relate. I'm so grateful he was an outspoken advocate for addicts and that this book was released prior to the end of his life. His fight is over.... may he rest easy at last.
Lol. Yeah… come on. Sad that he killed himself over years despite having all the chances and resources in the world, but he did. Another Hollywood punk in the end. And no… chandler didn’t change the world… Recent generations have no perspective and overdramatize everything.
@@datacipher No matter what people's opinions of the man, I'll even agree the changing the world stuff is a bit strong - he had people that liked him and ones he didn't. But there's no doubt that you're a sad fella. And if you're not, you're lucky that you're too naive to have a real look at yourself.
@@datacipher My Grandfather smoked his whole life. I was about 10 years old when my mother said to him, 'If you ever want to see your grandchildren graduate, you have to stop immediately.'. Tears welled up in his eyes when he realized what exactly was at stake. He gave it up immediately. Three years later he died of lung cancer. It was really sad and destroyed me. My mother said to me- 'Don't ever smoke. Please don't put your family through what your Grandfather put us through." I agreed. At 28, I have never touched a cigarette. I must say, I feel a very slight sense of regret for never having done it, because your post gave me cancer anyway.
When Matthew speaks about feeling better after a drink, I knew what he meant. This life is so harsh and it's difficult to fit in. I think he was a sensitive soul who struggled with this life. I hope his Legacy will help others with addiction. Rest in Peace Matthew, you will be missed.
@@tankthearc9875 Yeah but mental illness and addiction don't care if you're rich, famous, have people who love you. Mental illness and addiction can and will still take you
He was very sensitive. In friends interview Lisa made it sound like they all keep in contact. But when James corden asked "who doesn't pick-up" he said no one calls me then breaks down in tears. He was very lonely too i feel and missed his "friends" cast.
My sister was a heavily alcoholic. My family tried everything we possibly could to try and help her. For 8 years she just got worse, wrapped up with the wrong crowd. Meeting a guy with the same alcoholism addiction and drugs, who murdered her in 2020. I'm currently listening to MP book, and watching this has made me understand my sister's mindset at her time of alcohol and drug use. It breaks my heart. RIP Matthew Perry ❤
this interview helped me make peace with him passing. he, obviously, finally had a goal, had forgiven himself, and despite of his health issues he still was witty and still a beautiful person who helped a lot of us. Thank you Matthew
As an early intervention therapist, an attachment and trauma specialist for more than 40 yrs, it is upsetting to hear what Matthew's parents were told to do. I heard laughter in the audience because they do not understand what he is saying. But it is SO IMPORTANT for the public to learn and hear the impact of a Dr's prescription of phenobarbital to a 30 day old infant, for 30 days. I think what he doesn't realize even to this day is that his infant self became accustomed to this substance: it is not genetic, it is not a "disease" as such, but a result of early exposure to a highly addictive substance, ie phenobarbital. This is an early adaptation for need of a substance, fed to this baby Matthew. This is not ok, it is tragic - and the effect on Matthew's life has been profound. But he is strong, intact and here to make a statement. Please read Gabor Mate's books, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts, and his recent book The Myth of Normal to gain greater understanding of addictions. Thank you, Matthew Perry, for being brave and determined to share your personal history.
the sad part is that he had to go through withdrawal as a baby!! can you imagine the pain, helplessness and confusion??!! this surely must've damaged him and set him up for addiction later on. anything intense like that gets seared into one's subconscious and must be dealt with eventually.
I can't believe you don't know how genetic alcoholism is. I mean the stuff his parents gave him may have exacerbated it. I do agree there. But for alcoholics with that gene, they all, every one, have that exact same 1st time experience with alcohol that people without the genes don't experience. Our body metabolizes alcohol differently than normal people from the get go. We experience the insane cravings from the 1st time because of that metabolizing. For many of us that had nothing as a child, we experience the exact same thing he experienced. My buddy drank 2 wine coolers, I drank 10 until it was all gone. That was my first time at 16 years old. But numbers have proven that the chance of being alcoholic is largely determined by the family history. For people like us, we are alcoholic long before we ever take the 1st drink. We don't drink ourselves into alcoholism.
I felt the same thing. Seemed like he knew he was dealing with someone very likely high as a kite at the moment, talking about helping others with addiction.
This is one of the most honest interviews I've ever seen - he was so open, relaxed, didn't try to play Chandler or be funny, and so vulnerable. It is such a great discovery of this beautiful person who suffered much but still stayed so deeply human. Rest in peace Matthew, we will remember you like this.
Hate to say it but he’s probably high. The way he’s talking sounds like it too… slightly slurring. This isn’t a criticism of him or his character… but I’ve been around people on opiates and this is exactly how they talk when they’ve taken a LOT.
Many people talk like this without being "high", and he wasn't young anymore, things change. And I think he was under specific doctor medication nevertheless, exactly because of his addictions etc
He had several surgeries a few of which resulted in comas. Basically he sounds like a person recovering from a stroke. My gramma had several diabetes related strokes back in the day and it caused slurred speech and even some facial paralysis
I know he wants to be remembered for helping people first and foremost, not as a character in a sitcom, but I think he perhaps didn’t realise the extent of people he helped ‘just’ by playing a character on Friends. A safe escape and antidote to a sometimes overwhelming world, a restbite from the pressures of daily life. He’s left a lasting legacy in the sharing of his story, I’m sure his parents, friends and loved ones will be so incredibly proud of him.
Your comment just blew me away , I agree completely , I subscribed to your contentless channel just for this :P , so make some content and share your thoughts with the world , it truly needs it right now.
I totally agree with what you said. He was that safe escape for so many even if he couldn't be for himself. Friends, The Whole Nine Yards, and all his other work is what may have stopped some people from taking that drink or pill. Shows with that much humor soothed the soul in the healthiest of ways making life a little easier to take. I'm eternally grateful that he shared his story with the world. He really covered all his bases when it came to helping people, and I hope he sees the amazing impact he has made on so many.
Yeah he will be remembered as Chandler.I will be comforted by watching him on ‘Friends’. It is a responsibility to have children and not neglect them. Felt bad about his mother. He felt the loss
Anyone else watching this just days after his passing? This should be required reading (watching) for addicts or anyone. He helped many just by telling his story. Farewell friend.
But he didn’t tell the truth. He led us to believe in his sobriety. How sad his legacy will be drug addict instead of great actor. He could have been honest. Those of us that have struggled would have stood by him.
"When I die I don't want Friends to be the first thing that's mentioned." - Matthew Perry He wants to be remembered for his impact on helping people struggling with addiction and alcoholism. Rest easy Matthew.
and yet that's exactly what's happening( I know people have good intentions but i still feel sorry for him because there was so much more to him than Chandler
His friends co-star failed him to be a true friend when he was alive. RIP Mathew Perry. Your book will inspire more people in real life than your so so co stars in reel
Everyone in the comments supports Matthew (understandably), but I also would like to pay my respect to the interviewer. Witty, funny, polite an on point, awesome job!

I do. I've been drinking for 43 years. How I survived, I don't know. If Matthew had admitted to using, instead of saying he could help his fellow addicts, he would have found a world of support~the "penguins," as he described his friends, especially. But you can't help an addict until you are 100% clean and sober, and he never was.
@@perryolsen1370 There was no ethanol in his system when he died, so they say. Authorities are still searching for the sources of the ketamine he took off-label. I am convinced that the autopsy was incomplete and sloppy. What bothers me is that the coroner claimed Perry drowned, but there was no foaming around his mouth, which is typical of drowning, and there was no water in his lungs.
FRIENDS has been my warm security blanket whenever I have been in dark places. It has and will be my therapy in deep distressing times. RIP Mathew, you are and will always be my favorite. 😫😫😫😫😩😩😩😩
Rest in peace to the man who shaped my personality and childhood. While Friends wasn’t the greatest show of all time it was a form of comfort when I didn’t have it. Forever never meant forever, it’s just remembering our yesterday with every single day after. May he rest knowing that he was not only just an actor, but as an icon of an era.
His book is incredibly powerful to other addicts. It feels like he was given one last mission to help as many people as possible, whilst sober, before he had to go. The book, and these interviews that he did to publicise them, will absolutely save lives.
@@sharonmorine5407 I hope you do still read it Sharon - I don't know if I read it as the legacy he wanted to leave when I read it before he passed away, but it certainly feels like that's what it is now. It deserves to be read by many, for years to come.
Rest in peace Matthew. I grew up watching Friends. There was never a dull moment. You brought so much life to Friends. Thank you for your humor and quirky personality. You will be missed.😥
Matthew Perry made huge wholesome deeds by opening up in his memoire, interviews to help people with addiction. This will go a long way even after his passing. He has a good and big heart. RIP Chandler/Matthew.
Matthew, may not have realised at the time, that he was helping people that watched friends. He entered into so many homes, DV homes, Abusive homes, poor homes, people battling an illness, grieving home, etc and for just that 20min some people/children were able to have escapism, peace, hope or whatever friends episodes did to the individual. His life impacted so many and sometimes you don’t always know how . Rest peacefully Matthew 🫶🏼🌟🕊️💫🙏🏼
This is so true. I was bleeding and cramping whole pregnant from a high stress situation, and I intuitively knew to relax instead of think about it and go to a doctor. I laid down and said to my husband, “Just put on friends and don’t talk to me.” I had the series on DVD, just put one disc in after another until it stopped. As my son was growing up, we continued to utilize that that show for stress relief.
Mathew seemed to have reached a good place before his passing. He seemed happy and had a focus for what was important to him so I’m glad he made it there. His acting work will be remembered and celebrated. His advocacy will be appreciated and his openness and honesty will continue to help people. Condolences to all his loved ones. Rest in Peace Mathew, you will be greatly missed.
Fly high 🕊 Matthew Langford Perry (August 19, 1969 - October 28, 2023). You brought millions of people such joy with your talent and saved millions more by sharing your story. Rest easy friend. 💔 You'll never be forgotten.
His honesty & courage defined him, not his addiction. I feel that his self-deprecation was, as well as a coping mechanism, an enduring sign of his humility & his humanity, no arrogance whatsoever. So, thank you, Matthew, for being a Friend, to struggling addicts everywhere. You are so adored, greatly missed already & your dazzling light of love will shine forever more. Amen.

my wife and I are so saddened by Matthew’s death and we weren’t even avid watchers of the friends series when it was on. But there’s something about his honesty and vulnerability that is touching and inspiring.
Wow the thing he said about wanting his mother's attention is powerful..we parents have no idea how our small gestures are huge for our kids. I will always try to remember this for my little one..
...yes, it is really important, and it's also a huge reason as to why the addiction takes over. Parents' love is so important to a child, and has a lifelong impact.
As a parent thankful for the advice like this given to me, to intentionally get on your chill speed around them and NOTICE them. Miracles occurred when I did that around my little one. They feel seen and that love sinks deep in them.
As a woman who has struggled with depression and anxiety for most of my life, I had the EXACT same experience when I got tipsy for the first time at 20. I literally thought "This is how normal people must feel". I've since gone through periods where I drink way too heavily but I'm trying to stop because I could easily picture myself spiraling in a similar manner as Matty. Mental health problems and addiction are no joke. RIP Matty. 🥺 Gone too soon 🪽❤️
This man knew he was going to make a difference in people's lives after his passing. I'm happy they got Matthew Perry House foundation going. This will be a conversation starter and could help others for years to come. He knew what he was doing. He truly wanted to help people. He's very honest and funny. I listen to the audio and find myself chuckle. I can relate to alot of what he's saying. Rest easy Matthew. You're work here on earth is not done. It's not going unnoticed.
He hardly made a difference in anyone's life except to show how you can pull the wool over people's eyes, Matthew was a drunk and a druggie and never got sober
This makes me just want to hug him. Hug him to thank him for his bravery, his honesty, his heart, and his talent that he shared with us all. Growing up with an alcoholic teaches you it isn’t a choice. It is a disease and like he said, it doesn’t mean you’re weak by any means. My heart break for his family and friends, because I know the pain of losing a recovering alcoholic once they are getting their life back on the right path, are repairing relationships and have a vision to accomplish so much more. His words will live on and continue to heal more lives long after we are gone.
Its almost as if he could sense his time was near but he wasn't gonna let that stop him and still lived life to the full and wrote a wonderful book. The man is amazing... He's definitely left his mark on the world. RIP Matt
There are some celebrity deaths that just hit you so strongly. You’re attached to their characters and then their actual personalities. You bind with moments in your life and their shows or movies or even their true personalities. Matthew and Chandler are both incredibly special and important for so many moments of our lives. This one hurts and it hurts bad. Poor man suffered so deeply. I truly hope he’s resting somewhere filled with love.
So very true. His death bothers me so much. There are not enough words. Matthew was so very special. I think that none of us except his close family and friends knew all of his struggles. Such a tragedy, that this wonderful man lost the battle.
I'm feeling the same. This is the first death since River Phoenix, that has really hit home. Matthew Perry and his character, Chandler, represent my generation. I see so many of my friends in him. He is only a few years older than me, and I think that is part of why this hurts so much. We are getting older, and we are not invincible. Those of us who partied hard or maybe haven't taken the best care of our bodies are finding that it eventually catches up to you. RIP dear Matthew Perry. You will be missed more than you could ever imagine ❤
Drugs and alcohol sure didn't help with Matt's long term health, but he also took that damned shot and promoted it with t-shirts on his Instagram. People are in total denial about it. There are a ton of people young and old prematurely dying, or, they had successfully battled health issues and then after taking the shot, their cancer in remission, etc went wild, like Jimmy Buffett's and Suzanne Somers. Teens dropping dead all over the country from heart attacks. It's insane, and yet all of you zombies just believe all the liars in mass media who get tons of money from Big Pharma. A war crime has been committed by Big Pharma, the govt and mass media and none of you care or will even look into it. Sad.......
I was a full blown addict/junkie for 13 years and i know exactly the struggle he went through and addiction doesnt care what your age is or what race you are, addiction has one purpose in the end and that is to ultimately take your life in every sense of the word. I lost everything and everyone and then i was reborn the day my daughter was born, she saved my life. I will never use again cause my baby girl needs her daddy in her life forever. To all the addicts out there, i feel your pain, but believe me, there is hope and there is a way out of that life, please dont let yourself be just another statistic. Same here but with sleeping pills. I have tried every drug never got addicted and never smoke a cig in my life. Since Xmas of 2009 till now every night I take (8-15 per night) 50mg of those sleep gel pills. There were a few times where I took 20-25 in one night.

I always got this sense that he didn’t ever feel like he was good enough & that makes me so sad bc he was good enough. He was and will always be an inspiration. He went through hell and back & the fact he stood up every day & was able to bring Chandler Bing to life & create this iconic character that helped millions of us around the world deal with anxiety and depression. Thank you, Matthew for helping so many addicts & thank you for helping us deal with our mental health through Chandler Bing. You will never ever be forgotten. RIP.
And I am thinking more & more about Jim Carey how he has been so frank about depression & struggling at various stages. People heed icons & when it's a person who steps up to help people. Oh, he's after mentioning Jim Carey...rest in Peace Matthew Perry.
I believe when you make it through the hell he did, he was incredibly grateful and it was important to him to help others.I also think it was helpful for him. Despite his addiction illness, he truly seemed like a pretty wonderful guy.
Rewatching this after learning that he's gone. We never truly know someone's struggle but Matthew decided to share his in his book. His pain was indescribable but I hope he can rest now. I'm speechless and so sad for his suffering when he brought so much laughter and light to other people. He reached true enlightenment and self-awareness here and I'm glad of that. He came full circle but I'm also dismayed that his story ended like this. He truly made it his mission to understand his disease and the affliction he was so tortured by.
When he teared up and said "it’s not fair" that crushed me. It really is not fair. He deserved to live the rest of his life in peace. Maybe find true love? Idk but I’m heartbroken. I truly hope he’s at peace on the other side, he’s been through enough he certainly deserves it❤
His opening story brought back a memory. When I was 8, I saw my aunt giving my 3 year old cousin sips of beer at a family gathering. I was shocked and questioned her doing that. She chastised me, saying, "Oh it's good for him". He drank himself to death by the time he was 30. I guess at 8, I was wise beyond my years.
He will not only be remembered for Friends, he will be remembered for his beautiful heart and his ability to make others smile and laugh even though he was suffering. Such a beautiful soul. He will be so missed. We love you Matthew, rest in peace. Still can’t believe he is gone.
Oh boy, Matthew is actually self-aware. That bid with his mom and him wanting to turn around, that is extremely vulnerable to say. I can't wait to read his book.

Mental illness and addiction go hand In hand is usually self medicating for mental illness pain and trauma. x
Matthew Perry was my middle school and high school celebrity crush. My mom and I never missed an episode of Friends. Chandler could always make me belly laugh out loud. Matthew could convey so much with just his face and body. He made being a comedic actor looks effortless. In interviews, he always seemed like such a smart, kind, warm and giving person. I’m shocked and heartbroken. Like when Robin Williams died, I feel like a small part of my youth has disappeared. Thank you, Matthew Perry, for the light you brought to the world. Your talent with live on forever.
31:20 is a beautiful moment. After being so honest and raw, it's wonderful he was able to hear that we still love him. And despite being in the middle of a heavy topic, he was still able to make a joke. This man was truly talented and we are forever honored to share the world with him. ❤
He was truly an amazing man. One of my idols now, especially with myself being an alcoholic. Matthew's openness about everything has truly helped me and I am sure countless others. Amazing man in and out
I feel like I lost a good friend. He will be missed. What a life he lived. He walked through the fire and lived to talk about it. I wish his family and friends comfort and peace. Much Love.
After watching this, I have a new respect for Matthew. I've been through a lot of the same addictions especially alcohol. And also came close to death at one point. But after recovering from an aortic aneurysm dissection I went clean but relapsed. Then finally quit drinking and am now 4 years totally clean. But it's a real disease that haunted me for 25 years. I'm 53 now and still struggling with my health but doing much better. Rip Matthew Perry 😢
This interview is one of the best I have ever watched in my entire life. The host asked the right questions and gave the guest the time to share the details that led to the main answer. Kuddos. I love how Matthew Perry presented himself as a common, normal human being who had a "disease," made a mistake, didn't understand what he's doing, or what's happening, and correcting those mistakes, and on top of that, offering help who are having the same journey as him. I watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S. whenever I'm depressed and anxious. I always adored/hated how Chandler Bing is using sarcasm and timely jokes as a defense mechanism and JANICE! And I never knew MATTHEW PERRY aside from being Chandler Bing. Now, knowing a bit of your personal story, I'd remember you as the MATTHEW PERRY, also a human who has his own ghosts and struggles despite of, like you said, "achieving your dreams." Rest in peace, and thank you for being a part of my life simply by sharing the lessons you've learned in this journey called life and FRIENDS.
I somewhat disagree, like ok the interviewer asked good questions but every conversation just felt like Matthew chucking an interesting topic down a black hole. Like there was no back and forth, just a one sided volley of questions. Like "so in the book you mentioned doing blah blah.." "Yeah " "So anyway in the book you also mentioned ... " Like bro just make some interesting remark about what Matthew just said lmao.
@@Adi-mj3cb It's his "the best interview" in life what he have ever watched, not everyone is smart/knowledgeble, don't worry he might've talked out of emotion,..
@@j_vinsmoke2576 I have no idea what you just said. All I'm saying is that the interviewer could have engaged in actual conversation rather than just asking questions.
Wow, phenobarbital at 30 days old... No wonder that first night of drinking at 14 felt like "this is how good normal people must feel." His cellular memory was, no doubt, responding to something he knew as an infant. I truly appreciate his honesty about all of this. I have a new-found respect for Matthew, and I wish him well!
Lets get something strait. The phenobarb did not make him an addict by any stretch. But it did feed that inner desire at such an early age and might have had profound effects later on.
Mmmmm...... no not really. There were millions of babies given the same medication and they didn't grow up to be addicts. Also the whole "this must be how normal people feel" would simply have been the removal of inhibition, social awkwardness and anxiety due to being drunk.
Very sad to be watching this after his passing. He was not like most celebrities, he seemed like such a genuine person with a good soul. I'm sure we will all be forever grateful for what he brought to this world, whether it was laughter, smiles, or help for those with addiction. Rest in peace Matthew Perry.
Thats the thing, people have a pre conceived notion that addicts aren't good people. When in fact they are the best people because they have so much empathy and understanding of others. I just wish the stigma of addicts was understood more by non addicts
@@sarahcashmore6736But that doesn't apply to all addicts is the thing. There are those who are some of the worst people to begin with and addiction makes them worse.
I just started listening to his book again last week, it has already helped me so many times. His life and the way he talks about everything he’s gone through is beyond incredible. Chandler made me laugh, but Matthew Perry saved my life. You’ve shared your life, love and laughter with us, there’s no way I can thank you enough. ❤
My sister was living with my brother while he was using heroin and she begged him to get some help and he said "I think I can manage this..." He died a few days later from an overdose. Those are definitely powerful quotes from Perry.

RIP Matthew! You are so sorely missed! Watched friends with my daughter for years and now at 75 still love it. Loved your character Chandler! Most of all so proud of you for dealing with your disease, writing your book and your huge heart to help people struggling with addiction. My deepest condolences to your family, friends, colleagues and worldwide fans. ❤️💔❤️
Oh how I wish that my son could of heard this interview.....my son passed away in May this year, he was 44. He had kidney failure. Now Matthew has passed.....my heart is broken. May our God's peace surround you always😢😢😢😢
This interview hits really hard in light of the sad news he has just died. What a lovely guy who, while struggling with his demons was able to help others. His legacy will surely be making the disease of alcoholism understood, and help those suffering understand it's not their fault
This is the most touching interview I have ever seen! Matthew Perry was evidently not only a brilliant actor - he is such a real person! Such honesty, such humility, such goodness-of -heart! The world has lost a very special person! Yes Matthew - you will never be forgotten for your Friends moments; but I know that even though you are no longer in our presence - you will continue to help many in their struggles to live as normal a life as they are able with this terrible disease! Thank you for all those special words you have left behind! IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT!
Matthew should do podcasts. He handles himself in a smart, funny, humble, honest way. His story is definitely touching and inspiring and can help so many people
The stories of his infancy, youth and how he was raised show just how much it was responsible for his addiction.... its so sad. it shows just how unbelievably important childhood is to creating a content, healthy adult.
This may be true, and I’m sure it didn’t help him any, but tons of addicts are raised in solid homes and still have the disease. I think that’s his point with emphasizing it being a disease, sometimes it just happens because of genetics.
30:25 made me realize that he is now free of this addiction, not suffering anymore. He doesnt have to fight it anymore. Life was so tough on him and now he can finally rest in peace.Thank you Matty for spreading awareness about this issue, your legacy will live through Chandler and through your experiences you so openly shared with us. Thank you my Friend. 48:55
I was just thinking about this. I am truly saddened about his passing, but he was such a tortured soul and went through so much pain in his life. I take solace in knowing that he is finally at peace. Wherever he is, I hope he's okay and he knows how much we love him and how proud we are of him for his battle against addiction, but he can finally rest.
My wife and I struggle with alcoholism. It’s getting to the point where we are very aware of how our 2 sons perceive our actions and we’re battling the urge night after night. They don’t deserve drunk parents. Thats my motivation. Im looking for additional reinforcements all the time. Glad I found Matthew’s interview.
I hope you and your wife are doing well today. Please know that there are people who can help you. One way to start getting help is online AA meetings. Wishing you two all good things.
I know alcoholism is hard, my mother was an addict, and I have been addicted to several substances. Please, for the sake of your children, be strong for them if not yourself. Both of my parents were drug addicts and it rubbed off on me and my siblings, and now we struggle with the same issues. There is no shame or blame here, but while you still can, be the parents they need you to be. It's already amazing you are trying to get better. Good luck and stay strong.
I’ve always questioned whether addiction is a substance issue or trauma that isn’t dealt with. If you’re experiencing or living with past trauma trying to fight the uphill battle of addiction is almost impossible. If we deal with the problems first then the addiction is easier to tame imho.

The best actor in Friends. An absolute comedic genius. Like Jerry Lewis and Buster Keaton before him, he managed to make others laugh and keep them entertained while pulling from his own deep darkness. Thank you for everything, Matthew! RIP my Friend!
Kudos to Matthew Perry. To be so brutally honest about everything that he has gone through, takes tremendous strength. "Friends" was a great show and Matthew was wonderful on it, but knowing what he was dealing with during it's run, probably makes it somewhat sad for him. Like he said, addiction never goes away and he will deal with this for the rest of his life. May Matthew be given the humor, courage and support to do that. Love him! 🙂❤🙏
I am 35. I grew up with Friends. I have drank for 6 months straight. Before that a yr. Everything he said about being an addict is completely 110% true. You think about a beer until you get it and it feels so good that now you can live through the day. The feeling wears off so you need more until you get drunk enough. even to be able to sleep because you pass out. Its hard. picking up the book tomorrow. RIP my Friend
Yes. I want to help take away your pain. Yet pain is the fire that forges our soul into creating a different way of being. Please keep walking the difficult path. You are loved so very deeply 🙏
I saw an interview of his last year when his book came out & left a comment on it saying how glad I was to see him doing so well & wishing him the best. Seeing this reminds me of how much he valued being able to help others. Even though I’m a fan of Friends & that’s how I know him, I hope he is remembered for his contribution to bringing awareness to the insidious nature of addiction. May you rest in peace Matthew Perry.
❤️💔. RIP. Your ability to voice how an addict feels, how their brain works, and what that means for them has helped me as I’ve processed alcoholic family members and friends’ lives. Thank you for bringing light to this.
Im 31, i struggle with alcohol. Im a functioning alcoholic and i dont want to be. Its a Wednesday night and im currently drunk - i have to work at 830 am tomorrow. My dad gave me my first drink when i was 13 while i was going through my parents divorce. He didnt do it in malicious, it was your typical give a child a sip and they wont like it. But i liked it, it made me feel good, it taught me problems can be solved by getting drunk but as an adult i know this isnt true. I didnt want this or this problem. I still struggle with my addiction but i can feel your pain
He was just a humble, loving, funny, intelligent man. I truly hope he knows what a difference he made. I know for me, he helped me though so many low points in my life. How brave of him to use his platform to speak on such a taboo and misunderstood topic. Missed is an understatement.
Intelligence is a curse for some of us. Addiction loves intelligence. It takes us a places we’d never see without it. I’ve always wished I was dumb, slow, simple. I’d have nothing to quench if I wasn’t intelligent. There is such a thing as being too smart.
I can perfectly relate to the 1st time. Me and a buddy got wine coolers. He drank 2 and was done, I drank the other 10. I knew I had found the one thing that made me feel a part of instead of separate from. It was the greatest feeling I had ever experienced and have ever experienced to this day. And I just knew that this was how other people got to feel all the time. Was convinced. But it turned on me. My best friend became my worst enemy. Could never put together more than a few years of sobriety for 30 years. After a few years of sobriety, my mind would convince me that after all that sobriety, it would be ok to experience that feeling one more time. Rinse and repeat. The one thing non alcoholics don't understand is it's not a tolerance issue. Once it turns on you, you can never again enjoy it no matter how many years you put between you and the bottle. And the older you get the more it takes to get drunk even after many years sober. What Matthew is doing now will keep him sober if he continues. Sharing the experience strength and hope of sobriety is the only way to keep it. I'm 49 now and 7 years sober.
Great share!!!! Me too, I remember that feeling of now belonging. It was amazing!! It worked until it didn't. Seven years for you(amazing) three for me. Thankyou for sharing, proud of you!!
Yes yes yes yes yes.

A cautionary tale for all of us. He went to get help and his helpers killed him
As an early intervention therapist, an attachment and trauma specialist for more than 40 yrs, it is upsetting to hear what Matthew's parents were told to do.
TY for sharing. I totally agree with you.
the sad part is that he had to go through withdrawal as a baby!! can you imagine the pain, helplessness and confusion??!! this surely must've damaged him and set him up for addiction later on. anything intense like that gets seared into one's subconscious and must be dealt with eventually.
Yes to Dr. Gabor Mate, his depth of understanding is amazing 👍
Your reply is interesting. Was that drug prescribed to babies/children routinely at one time?
As a fellow addict I truly hope your brutal honesty and bravery in sharing will be your legacy

Hate to say it but he’s probably high. The way he’s talking sounds like it too… slightly slurring. This isn’t a criticism of him or his character… but I’ve been around people on opiates and this is exactly how they talk when they’ve taken a LOT.
@@neomacchio4692I did notice that also and he looked a tad rough... no offence...
Complete human interview ❤❤
Absolutely, he gave us some humour to lighten up our day and was a gifted actor, but most definitely a brilliant man. R.I.P Matthew Perry
Yes!

My heart breaks for this beautiful man. No one knows how hard he struggled.
I do. I've been drinking for 43 years. How I survived, I don't know. If Matthew had admitted to using, instead of saying he could help his fellow addicts, he would have found a world of support~the "penguins," as he described his friends, especially. Depression made him choose that path...cause he did not feel better like normal people.

His death really did seem to hit a lot of people hard.

What an inspiration. So glad he wrote this book before his untimely death. He indeed will be helping people, long after his life here on Earth.
Matthew is not helping anyone, he was a liar, he had everyone fooled thinking he was sober
May he rest in peace. I thank him for using his experience and platform to shed light on this horrible disease.
❤️ you REST IN PÈRRY
His energy was simply golden in so many ways.
Oh how I wish that my son could of heard this interview.....my son passed away in May this year, he was 44. He had kidney failure. Now Matthew has passed.....my heart is broken. May our God's peace surround you always😢😢😢😢
So sorry for your loss 🙏🏽
His story is definitely touching and inspiring and can help so many people
Fantastic idea 💡 ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The stories of his infancy, youth and how he was raised show just how much it was responsible for his addiction.... its so sad. it shows just how unbelievably important childhood is to creating a content, healthy adult.
This may be true, and I’m sure it didn’t help him any, but tons of addicts are raised in solid homes and still have the disease. I think that’s his point with emphasizing it being a disease, sometimes it just happens because of genetics.
hard to believe doctor's could give barbiturate to a baby! 70's....
What a thoughtful, well spoken gentleman. His sudden death is so bloody tragic. 😢
Thank you for sharing, this shows your heart is in the right place. Be strong because you know you are! Sending you love 💕
Look away from Hollywood idiots and ONLY look to your children for inspiration. Your children are innocent. Celebs are tainted.
I’ve always questioned whether addiction is a substance issue or trauma that isn’t dealt with. If you’re experiencing or living with past trauma trying to fight the uphill battle of addiction is almost impossible. If we deal with the problems first then the addiction is easier to tame imho.
We all struggle to some extent from addiction. And it's by design. Phones, drama, sugar, endorphins, etc. Thank you Matthew.
You have no clue what he is talking about… if you compare his addictions to the ones you listed.
@@mgm579nope YOU are the one without a clue. This toxic bullshit has no place in this world. Who the hell are you to dictate how someone else finds sobriety?
@@mischaraine1645phone addiction is somewhat relevant but yes you can still be highly functional with phone addiction. But depression can still increase because of phones
Imagine you have a severe panic attack, and severe case of the flu everytime you put your phone down, or don't eat sugar, lasts for 30-60 days and that's what opiate addiction is like.
@@Julia-nl3gqi mean.. eberyone is addicted to something, conditioned to something, clings to something. if that was taken away you'd lose your mind, lose yourself, and spend your life trying to get it back. everyone is striving to find meaning. going to drugs is the worst of it but going to other things that mentally and physically harm you can destroy your brain and your livelihood too. some people don't have access to drugs or money for alcohol. they find something else or take it out a different way. drugs and alcohol are the RESULT of depression and trauma and loneliness. they a way of punishing & rewarding yourself for feeling like you're not normal and don't fit in.
Thank you Tom Power and the remarkable interview with Mathew Perry. It’s worth the rewatch. We love him so much. This hits hard 😢
Beautiful Truth @@singingkellyb
I saw an interview of his last year when his book came out & left a comment on it saying how glad I was to see him doing so well & wishing him the best. Seeing this reminds me of how much he valued being able to help others. Even though I’m a fan of Friends & that’s how I know him, I hope he is remembered for his contribution to bringing awareness to the insidious nature of addiction. May you rest in peace Matthew Perry.
Much respect for the raw honesty. He faced his demons head on and was no longer afraid.
Prayers for u
How are you doing? Hope you're OK.
Did you look for AA meeting near where you live?
I think that would be the first step
He was just a humble, loving, funny, intelligent man. I truly hope he knows what a difference he made. I know for me, he helped me though so many low points in my life. How brave of him to use his platform to speak on such a taboo and misunderstood topic. Missed is an understatement.
Intelligence is a curse for some of us. Addiction loves intelligence. It takes us a places we’d never see without it. I’ve always wished I was dumb, slow, simple. I’d have nothing to quench if I wasn’t intelligent. There is such a thing as being too smart.
Ignorance is bliss, especially nowadays... Not knowing is not worrying and increases happiness.
Perry's testimony is so bloody powerful; thank-you, Matthew, for sharing your story and for helping others who are addicted to substances.
He’s not sober
@@FIshfood500 💯
@@FIshfood500 has nothing to do with helping people. No one is perfect, and like he said the addictive tendencies never leave.
Proud of you. Keep it up
