I used to work in Greggs and all bakes/items come in frozen and we'd just cook them in batches when we'd need them! These Iceland Greggs bakes aren't dupes, they're actually supplied from Greggs directly! I used to often survive off the sausage and bean ones through Uni 🤣
Also an ex Gregg's employee. I can vouch that they must be the same. I think we just cook them in super power ovens in store which makes them taste different!
I worked for m&s and the supermarket pastries are a different but similar recipe than the ones in store even though both are supplied frozen. It's due to different legislation for supermarket products Vs from bakery. I feel like Gregg's could do a similar thing with greggs
I can imagine a lot of food is the same or similar, but the cooking methods are different. At restaurants a lot of things are deep fried and covered in salt and msg which makes them delicious 😋
Funny to watch this as a Greggs employee. Those bakes definitely looked a bit undercooked from them, I'd say! The way you cooked your bakes are what I tend to aim for lol
As a Greggs Employee I can confirm all the products come out of the the same supply site/bakery. Kinda looks like your local branch weren't baking those pasties correctly, we have to rest the pasties before baking at a cetain temperature, seemed like they may have baked them at the wrong temp or not rested them before baking seeing as your chicken bake was raw on bottom x
I live in the United States and I recently have started purchasing the Great Value brand in Walmart. I was very wary at first, but it turns out that at least 89% of the Great Value Brand is BETTER than name brand. I was shocked, surprised, and am currently saving a lot of money and enjoying my food more.
I think it might be because they can’t have a hot plate in Greggs anymore? So the pasties have gone cold & coagulated. They are defo the same though! X
I used to work in Greggs! Sadly the front display units aren't hot and they are not designed to keep food hot, nor are they advertised to. Best to just head into store when they're likely cooking fresh batches often, ie. lunchtimes!
I agree as I dont usually find that the supermarket items are as great as the restaurant ones but it is still fun to try. Could you do a video of only shopping and eating from odd or even numbered aisles in one supermarket. Love from Canada.
That’s the biggest mistake most people make with ‘restaurant style’ chips at home. They bake/roast them in the oven, but almost guaranteed, the chips you get in a restaurant have been deep fat fried! They always taste better and more similar if you can deep fat fry them don’t they!
Greggs uses Combi ovens with steam, cooks faster, higher temp and doesn't dry out the pastry. What airfryers and a home oven can't do, add extra moisture. When you are use to cooking with steam combi home tabletop oven.
Really fun video, thank you! Was it an absolute nightmare to have everything done at the same time? I would have struggled to get to the recording of a video like this because of absolute chaos in the kitchen! Very impressed
Guessing the Greggs were bad because they weren't left to defrost for a bit...used to work at Greggs and the food was always so much worse when it hadn't sat outside the freezer for at least 5 minutes. And I'm almost 100% sure the stuff from the supermarket is just the Greggs supply repackaged-remember my manager telling me that pretty early on!
Fries you can make good at home by deep frying. We bought a little counter top deep fryer and it was worth the $30!!! And deep frying th frozen chicken tenders, the cheese sticks etc... So much better!!!! It's on another level!
once it's cooled down, I strain it and store it in a bottle until I want to use it the next time. just be aware of what has been fried in it and don't mix too much flavours in there, but otherwise it's fine to reuse a couple of times@@Kleigh8484
@@Kleigh8484I didn't know this until literally a few weeks ago. But you're supposed to pour the oil into a sealed container (maybe even a glass one specifically?) and throw it in with the garbage. Do NOT pour it down the sink whatever you do, it clogs pipes x

im 100% sure the greggs items found in supermarket are official greggs items. its just the way of cooking that changed its taste. ALSO ugh annoyed me so much you gave greggs a point bcuz you burnt your cookie :))))) shouldve skipped the cookie altogether
I could be wrong but I don't think these products are 'dupes'. I think the actual companies produce them for the supermarkets. They wouldn't be able to sell them under the restaurant names otherwise. It would surely be against the law.
South African living in UK here😊 It's just their word for a chicken pie. They're not very nice and I don't know why they don't just call them pies. I think maybe it's a marketing thing. Because pies here are quite cheap things but if you call it a chicken "bake" you can charge more for it and people will think it's a bit fancy.
@@rebekahjoytaylor8002 A bake (sometimes called a slice) is a different shape to a pie - places like Greggs sell bakes/slices because they're easier to eat on the go. Pies also have more filling, due to the difference in taste, but that does make them harder to eat with your hands without making a mess. You also get pasties which are similar, but a different shape again and are made with shortcrust pastry.
It's rare that frozen supermarket foods are as good as or better than restaurant versions. I DO like some of the Trader Joe's frozen foods, but they aren't duping restaurants. However, I find I prefer to cook foods on my own rather than buy supermarket frozen meals anymore. Frozen pizzas run the gamut, but I think the best one is Red Baron or DeGiorno ... rising crust. You do have to cook them in a very hot oven with a pizza stone or directly on the oven rack to get the best results.
I know you are an air fryer girlie .... can you find frozen tater tots in the UK? IMHO, air fryers would earn their place in my kitchen if they ONLY cooked tater tots!
They aren't fakes. They wouldn't have the official branding if they were fakes. Do you imagine that Gregg's make fresh pastry every day! It really depends how youve cooked the food. Usually it is identical to the restaurant, how you cook it really determines a lot of factors
The like the chicken bakes if they are hot, when they cool down they go gelatinous, stodgy and gross.
