  • Two peated releases from the Tobermory distillery go head to head today. The 10 year and a red wine cask finished Ledaig. One of these may just get into my all time top 10 affordable whiskies!!

The Rioja could be my favourite whisky right now. It's such a treat to drink and I'd happily reach for it over much more expensive bottles. This is one I'd definitely recommend to anyone who likes whisky but hasn't tried many bottles.

Great war as always mate. Really enjoyed the Rioja Cask and gutted I didn't pick it up when it popped up under £30, yet to try the 10 but sounds amazing with that nutty peat. Cheers!

Thanks Jeff! The Ledaig 10 is a classic now for me, love it!

We have the Rioja cask line up for review in a short time, so this was very interesting. It sounds like I am really going to enjoy it as I like those dark berry and chocolate notes. Thanks for sharing :)

Hope you like it and thank you! I think even for those who won’t like it, it’s so different that it’s worth trying purely for the different experience on an island malt :)

We have yet to have this distillery so cheers to you for bringing it to our attention. Excellent review and nice articulation of the sweetness and of the difference in the whiskies. They sound like they are at a really nice price. too. Cheers.

Thank you and they are, they’re fantastic, the 10 especially! For the money I think it’s get into my top 10 so far so I definitely recommend you give the 10 a go!

Ledaig 10 & Port Charlotte 10, two of the best 10 year old peated whiskies. Been meaning to order the Rioja, but haven’t gotten around to doing it, but sounds worth a try.

It’s a lovely whisky! Totally agree with you, they’re both great

Just had a dram of each before watching your review.
Both excellent but the Rioja wins for me because it has everything the 10 has, (personally I lost none of the 10 elements on the nose or palate), with an extra element which is really well integrated and complimentary.
Definitely recommend both. Amazing exercise in developing an outstanding base spirit before experimenting with different cask influences. Love them both! 👍👏

I can totally understand that, I think they’re both great and also both incredible value! I recently bought the 9 year cask strength. That’s a great one too although far more expensive so it doesn’t really do as well in the value department

I’ll definitely be trying more Ledaig. These are the only two I’ve purchased so far but couldn’t have been happier with either.
Just shows whisky doesn’t have to be old or expensive to be top drawer. 🙂🥃

@user-mp8il2mb8r totally totally agree with you there, I try my best to buy mainly the more affordable whiskies for that reason. Some £30 whiskies I have are a lot better than other £80 ones I have

I’ve got both of these bottles and they’re both no brainer purchases given the quality. As you say, they are very different from each other due to the wine cask maturation on the Rioja which is why I would definitely buy both. For me the Rioja narrowly gets the win but they’re both excellent drams.

I filmed the Rioja vs the 9 year CS that’s a Bordeaux red wine finish last night!
so I think you’ll like that one when it comes out! I was also very very pleasantly surprised with how the Rioja stood up to it, as you say. A great, great whisky, cheers!

@@WhiskyWars After seeing your video, I ended up buying a bottle of L10. Few days later I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get... 3 more bottles. The Rioja is next. Keep up the passion and great work.

This is a great video and so many good insights into Ledaig and I hope I can find the Rioja cask around here to do a similar comparison. Even just personally. I am enjoying Ledaig 10 and really want to discover more of their work. Cheers!

Thanks Jon! I felt exactly the same which I why I gave the Rioja a go. Not as good on the taste in my opinion but the nose is amazing and the flavour and notes weren’t what I was expecting and so for the experience of something new I was really happy with the purchase. It’s made me even want to check out some Tobermorys to see how it is unpeated too

Hi Jon, I haven’t been active on TH-cam the past couple of weeks, Ive had covid quite badly actually although yesterday seemed like the break through day and so once my nose and taste comes back I hope to be active on TH-cam again. As for social media I don’t have one for WhiskyWars. Do you think I should?

@@WhiskyWars Sorry to hear it has been a battle for you, but glad you may be on the other end of it now. As for social media, that depends on what you want to do with it. I like to post there just for a little more engagement. Many channels do a lot there, but that takes work and time and this is more how I relax then a large project! I hope you continue to get better!

I know it should not be an important aspect to focus on but the colour of the Rioja cask looks fantastic, especially on a side by side with the 10YO.
