Robin Zander is seldom mentioned as among the truly great rock vocalists. He deserves to be, as does Cheap Trick for being on the short list of greatest American rock bands.
@ Chris Legner You got that right, brother. There's really only 2 vocalists I'd put ahead of him on the list of my favorite rock singers, Paul Rodgers and Steve Perry.
Saw him do this song solo .. just a guitar and THAT VOICE ... one of the top 5 best moments in my 44 years of concert going .. nice that you featured this ✌️✌️
I have said for a long time that Robin Zander has one of the best rock n roll voices, period. When Cheap Trick recorded this song in the studio, just imagine how many takes it took to get the vocals to what we hear on the studio album. To sing well live is no easy thing. In this performance, it's studio quality. He's absolutely nailing this vocal live. Amazing. Flippin' amazing.
Absolutely!!! Saw CT twice this summer in Chicago area and they still look and sound amazing…Robin has taken especially great care with his voice all these years and encourages other young singers to do the same🙌🖤
Beth, thanks for highlighting Robin Zander's voice. We here in Rockford who grew up with the band are closely in touch with their skill set. Their family and friends are all well-integrated into the community. Definitely an inspiration to me when I started playing in bands. A couple things to note: 1. You can tell by his shirt this is probably the end of the set or encore and still sounds awesome. 2. CT tours more than any band I know and still are. Robin sings like this on so many songs night after night... especially back then when this song was a hit. It's amazing he can pull this off. Still sounds great to this day. 3. Glad they were inducted into the R & R Hall of Fame. Well deserved. 4. CT is an inspiration to so many huge bands. When you start digging into it, it's mind-boggling. 5. Could do a breakdown of each members abilities Rick (guitars), Tom (bass), and Bun E. (drums) and find they are all masters of their craft. Pretty amazing band overall. Cheers
I saw them live in 1985 in Tallahassee Florida. They opened for the band I went to see (REO Speedwagon), but as they came out on stage, I sat there mesmerized. I went to the record store the next day and bought every Cheap Trick album I could find And I’ve been a diehard fan ever since.
Glad to see so many people appreciate Robin's vocals. It's not just his range that makes him so great, but the emotion that comes through in his singing. One of the greatest vocalists in the history of rock n roll, period! And Cheap Trick is one the greatest bands and severely underrated.
I’ve seen Cheap Trick 21 times...hopefully 22 this summer. Robin Zander is amazing. His voice is as great live as anyone and it goes to show, little is done in studio. My all time favorite singer.
I would go out on a limb and say robin is THE most underrated vocalist ever in rock and also ct as a band..Die hards know he is great but the casual listeners/fans have no idea how great robin zander really is.
It always amazes me when singers at the level of Robin can nail songs like this when they have clearly already sang a full or near full set. Absolutely awesome. God I miss the 80’s.
Fascinating to how you can analyze voices! I've been listening to Robin for over 40 years, and always thought he was Great! Now I know (technically) why. Thank You! You are Amazing
He's a very talented gent. I love the way he didn't pike out on the high note at the end. Many singers never hit the high notes of the studio version and it always shits me.
Robin Zander is one of my favorite singers. Cheap Trick was the first concert I ever went to, when I was about 16, so they own a special place in my heart. 💖🤟
This wasn't even his best vocal performance of the song. Robin Zander has one of the most versatile voices in Rock. He even has a perfect pitch scream voice.
In the late winter of my years, I have finally come to appreciate not only what a fantastic voice this gentleman has, but also a fantastic singer he is. The two CAN be mutually exclusive, but in his case, they are not. I will echo what others have said, when folks talk great rock singers, you rarely hear this man's name mentioned, and that is a shame. His name should be among the first mentioned.
The first time I saw Cheap Trick was at an outdoor venue in Ft Myers Fl I was flabbergasted at how clear and melodic Zander’s voice was over the crowd noise this guy is seriously underrated!
The greatest in my book. Robin can sing sweet or punk rock vocal shred and back to sweet again without any difference. And he still can sing like that.
He is truly one of the very best!!! And quite easy on the eyes as well☺️ I have always loved The Flame as he sings it so beautifully and seemingly effortlessly🔥✨It was so interesting Beth to hear your professional takes and insight on how he sang this…really enjoyed this video and learned a lot🙌 Thank you!! ☺️
I have seen and heard Cheap Trick live many times over the years and Robin Zander ALWAYS kicked butt on vocals!! I mean, personal taste for a singers vocal tone aside you can’t ask for much more out of a lead singer than what Robin Zander has consistently done for Cheap Trick over the years! The man has always earned his pay at the end of every gig!
THE best singer in rock and roll... Probably why the record company pushed this song on them as no other rock band had a singer that could do it justice... 10 years before this it was so easy for him to hit highs and lows, go from screaming to sweet tones in an instant. That is why he's been called the man of a thousand voices. Check out mandocello and need your love by them.
They gave them a choice between this song and Look Away. They didn't like Look Away, so they took The Flame, and Chicago took Look Away. Both songs ended up going #1.
She does such a great job of capturing why Robin Zander has one of the all time great voices. Effortless and warm despite how high and wide his range is…it’s like people don’t even realize he is a vocal god.
I have seen cheap trick 3 times in my life and they kicked ass every time. They also did a special appearance at the end of an Alice Cooper show, which ironically enough the first time I saw them they opened for him.
Robin is right up there with Steve Perry, Rik Emmett, Steve Walsh, Brad Delp, Ian Gillan, Bruce Dickinson, RJD, DarrylHall, etc..Saw them back in '79..awesome show.
What’s even more impressive is that he sounds this breathtakingly beautiful with his voice in this hectic live setting where it’s usually impossible to sound this fucking good
5:20 the thing is, Robin does sing in that manner in many songs. His over enunciation. It’s amazing because he flows with ease through so many styles that would give a normal singer a sore throat- he does it for whole shows. He’s really the best.
Your just adorable and I love your insight on the abilities of these Bands and singers. This band "Cheap Trick" is from my hometown, Rockford, Ill. I have seen this band perform a ton of times and still even today Robin sounds the same. He's timeless when it comes to his gift of singing. The whole band still sounds great. The drummer no longer tours with them. Thanks for this bit of hometown nastolgia!
Perfect pitch. Amazing singer. Still great at almost 70. Keep in mind compared to a lot of the other folks reviewed here that tour every few years for a 25-30 show run, Cheap Trick and Zander have toured about 150 days a year for 45 years. Still sings in the original key and still hits about 95% of the high notes. From 1975-2010 he was untouchables vocally. Guy can scream at the top of of his lungs and then drop to a sweet high note with no loss of fidelity.
The way he uses his voice justifies the term 'the voice is an instrument'. If you to to their In Color album, and the song Oh Caroline I think you'll find one of the best examples of that.
Saw them in '97 opening for Motley Crue. Traffic was awful, got there late & walked in during The Flame. They sounded amazing! Thanks for reacting, Beth.
I have had the chance to hang and visit with cheap trick many times due to a side business i have. i have been a robin zander fan since the 70's. he introduced me to men singing like men, sometimes a person is born with their physical ducks in a row, the same way michael phelps has a body made to swim, robin zanders voice is made to sing, without a doubt the greatest singer ever..
Great song. Great band. Glad you found a video with all four original members of Cheap Trick. Cheap Trick was one of the first concerts I ever went to.
Just discovered you here on TH-cam and love learning a bit more about the technical side of singing. However the one statement that really struck me was "It makes me happy in my soul". Exactly what the voice and music should do for us. Thank you so much, looking forward to watching/listening to more!
I saw them in concert about 1995, with Loverboy & Foreigner. They all sounded good. You can see in this video, the singer of Cheap Trick, is spot on with the recorded version. This is a pretty difficult song to sing, and he’s singing it flawlessly.
I love Cheap Trick. One of the greatest bands of all time. Beautiful vocals, beautiful guitar, incredible basslines and one of the most underrated drummers ever. I love these guys. One of my main influences
Your technical expertise is amazing, I didn't know there was so much involved with defining how the highs and shapes of the sound are determined so much biologically/physically, Thank you for sharing!
Just saw them live last summer and Robin still sounds amazing! Rock singers are some of the best singers. Try to sing this as you get older. I challenge anybody to test this out.
I love Cheap Trick. They are one of the best live bands. I have always loved Robins voice. Ricks guitar are soaring around Robins voice. And they can hit you at a concert with song after song that are really good. Makes me smile too. Probably the best thing music can do. thanks!
One of the most underrated singers of his generation.
And probably the most underrated bands of all time.

Robin Zander is one of the most criminally underrated singers of all time! Right along with Mickey Thomas!!!
Mickey Thomas has some great pipes!
Where do you think Bobby Kimball lies on that spectrum? How about Doug Feiger?
@@michaelanderson2881 also, why does no one ever bring up Brad Delp from Boston?! Dude has serious range.
