this has been sitting in a vault for years and it's finally aged to bizarre perfection.
Bizarre indeed, and at the height of British Glam Rock!
I vividly recall this one "flooring" me when I watched the original airing. One of the more bizarre performances I'd ever seen. Marianne was basically living on the streets, strung-out and destitute after Jagger dumped her. Amazing that Bowie managed to get this performance from her at all. Since she wasn't taking care of her health, her voice definitely had begun to suffer at this point. Even though her voice suffered more damage in the years after this performance, she kicked the drugs, made the best of things, and fashioned a considerable career as a solo artist and actress that still continues.
I use to try to look like Marianne and sadly behaved like her too. Though all good now, of course.
Yeah, I wonder how much that whole "living on the streets" thing was overegged for shock value aka press interest. She doesn't exactly look like a homeless person here.
That was the most bizarrely great thing I've ever seen
Truly a priceless gem Shines, glistens just magical! Bizarre, profane and historic. Just mesmerizing. I had no idea this existed and Bowie was my #1 Starman.
Find the Tiny Tim and Eleanor Barooshian version.
I remembered when this aired. It was one of the greatest highlights in my life. I love Bowie so much!
I only saw it as a rerun but it's one of the best things ever. As far as all the people who complain about the vocals or the costuming, I say, look in a mirror. It's rock and roll people. It ain't supposed to be perfect, it's only meant to entertain.
Get a new life.
I did. I was 13yrs old then.
Proof that Marianne could look bloody marvellous in anything.
I just found this and I'm so glad. What a time it was, what an era. Sure miss it all.
I wonder what the Wolfman made of that performance? It's so totally out of whack it's brilliant. Bowie with feathers and high heels, Marianne dressed like a nun and I don't really know where the backup singers came from but they fit in perfectly. May I remind everyone of the quality of this recording/video, it's 50 years ago.
The quality is outstanding. I've been rewatching the same old fuzzy uploads for years. Such a treat.
We needed more Faithfull Bowie collaborations.
I have never seen this and I'm a huge Bowie fan. 😀😀
Same here fan of 50 years. Kind of wish I hadn't, she's awful .....
So mad and so beautiful.
Midnight Special 🎉🎉, kudos for putting them on to perform 🎉🎉. This is vintage Bowie and Faithful 🎉🎉
She asked me to stay, and I stole her room
She asked for my love, and I gave her a dangerous mind
Now she's stupid in the street, and she can't socialize
Well, I love the little girl, and I'll love her 'til the day she dies ......
Sacred and profane. Beautiful
Profane in what way?
If you're gonna cover Sonny & Cher then this is the way to do it.
This is surreal
Superbly adaptable voice David Bowie had to almost any song. Brilliant backing too. So surreal 😊
Marianne Faithfull sings like Madeline Kahn.
She's so tired
It's twoo, it's twoo!
She does!
Or, more accurately, Madeline saw this and sang like Marianne Faithfull. Who sang like Marlene Dietrich, a heroine to both.
@@TonyGPizza this is from November 1973 and Blazing Saddles came out in February 1974. Brooks was likely done filming and it was in post-production by the time Marianne and Bowie sang this duet. Was Marianne channeling Marlene? Perhaps. Madeline Kahn absolutely was, the whole character of Lili Von Shtupp was a parody of Marlene.
I have been watching bootleg videos of this and other Bowies videos from this particular show for years and most with a lot of quality flaws or missing spots but was happy to see them and could live with them! ...But finally, it's so great to start seeing very high-quality original TMS videos here on "The Midnight Special" channel from Bowie's 1980 Floor Show that aired back in 1973 and I remember it like it was yesterday! ...I sure hope eventually the whole show will be shown in its entirety! ...As there was nothing else ever like it ever since as it was almost the end of his Ziggy-Aladdin persona! ...Absolutely Bowie fantastic!
Thank you Midnight Special for releasing it and the many other shows and artist you have been sharing as I have been praying for many, many, many years for this musical history day to come from you!
You are very welcome, Burt
@@themidnightspecialtvshow If this reply is from the Mr. Burt Sugarman, it's an honor for me to receive a comment from you! ...I NEVER missed the Midnight Special back in its original airing dates! ...and Thank You very much again for bringing out these classics and full episodes to be viewed again by myself and others who remembers the show and also all of the younger generation that has never seen them as there in for a musical treat!
Seriously 😁 this is surreal 👍💗
This is simply beautiful and incredible and it makes me happy
Just a stunning bit of music history. So enjoyable to listen too.
Wow, what a treat. Nice find!
We had some of the best Duets in history perform
Even after 50 years, this is still odd and beautiful! Strange edit at the end, though. I wonder how it really went.......
I think that's real and I think that shows how little they rehearsed that.
Evidently she wore nothing under that robe, and the back was completely open, giving a "show" for those behind her. Perhaps the reason for the edit.
@@88fungo Makes sense!! (LOVE to see that though...!!)
On the bootleg versions of this we get to see Marianne's right leg up to her waist for a couple of seconds at the start. Looks like she had nothing on underneath that habit. Recorded at London's Marquee. Great to see a good quality version of this performance.
If I'm remembering correctly, drummer Aynsley Dunbar said Marianne was indeed nude under her backwards coat here, and as he was sitting behind her, had a pretty great view!
excellent duo merci a eux 👍👍❤❤
Seeing Ziggy era Bowie on a 70s American variety show doing a duet with Marianne is so wild. It was cool seeing Mick Ronson in the background, but I don't believe he actually played that solo, the band sounded like a backing track to me
The video as aired was spliced together from various takes and angles, so once it was edited together, things didn't always match up.
That. Was. Awful. 😵
Amazing!
1 million kinds of AWESOME!
What a classic. Nice to see a nice, clean, good copy here.
There wasent anybody like them ❤ it’s just absolutly brilliant
No denying, she Was a Hottie. After all these years after Bowies rendition I finally zeroed in that you can't climb a river.
freaking fabulous!
Staggeringly great - Hero's!
Goddamnit I miss him.
My life is complete.
I remember this with Marianne Faithfull!
Amazing, love it.
THANK YOU, Mr. Sugarman!!
How can you be this cool?
Best gig ever ❤😂❤😂
David Bowie singing a Sonny and Cher Bono song, wow.
Wow!😎
Simply great!!!
Glad you like it!
just when i thought i've seen everything.
Wow. The Thin White Duke at 26-years-old. Wow!
during this phase of David Bowie's hair and style I used to be so scared to death of him! I mean I was a little kid and I truly thought he was from Mars
This was taken fron The 1980 Floor Show.
Never knew of this performance! Absolutely quirky!
Marianne Faithfull and Bowie ❤️👑
I am pretty sure Marianne sings in the first verse "But if you fu+k me and baby I got you" (22sec) looking straight at Bowie
Wow
This is darling.
After watching this episode live, I went home and joined the Army.
Thank you for your service and for defending great art such as this.
Why did you do that??
GreT🎉🎉🎉❤
o máximo
Wow! Where has this footage been hiding?
This is banned in Florida. 😊
why??
Dafuq?!? Holy I’m to sober for this
Society has devolved to the point where Dave would have had picket lines in front of the show saying that this was drag time story hour.
No, it was appropriately scheduled for adults at midnight on Saturdays, not children’s classrooms on Monday morning.
The only thing that would have been more freaky than this is if Helen Reddy came out donning the angel of death/nun look and proceeded to announce that she was the high priestess for the OTO
This hurts my brain.
But I kinda dig it.
👏👏👏👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Sister Mary Morphine
Did Gregg Allman see this offer Marianne a chance to see his tattoos?
For the strongest counterpoint to all the anti-drug ideology, one needs only to show this three and a half minute video clip.
this video makes me not want to take any drugs
I Got You Babe (feat. Marianne Faithful)
They say we're young and we don't know
We won't find out until we grow
Well I don't know if all that's true
'Cause you got me, and baby I got you
Babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
They say our love won't pay the rent
Before it's earned, our money's all been spent
I guess that's so, we don't have a pot
But at least I'm sure of all the things we got
Babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
I got flowers in the spring
I got you to wear my ring
And when I'm sad, you're a clown
And if I get scared, you're always around
So let them say your hair's too long
'Cause I don't care, with you I can't go wrong
Then put your little hand in mine
There ain't no hill or mountain we can't climb
Babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
I got you to walk with me
I got you to talk with me
I got you to hold my hand
I got you to understand
I got you to kiss goodnight
I got you to hold me tight
I got you, I won't let go
I got you to love me so
I got you babe
Spiders from Mars last live performance (sans Mick Woodmansy...))
Bowie and Natasha Fatale!!
Did we actually live though that
waoo
they took this serious
Vim pelo barcinski
Wierdly wonderful
Second only to Beavis and Butthead's cover.
Foxy woman, damn.
The nun's not too bad either.
👽👽👽👽👽👽👽
Mi canción menos favorita del Midnight Special, pero al menos Bowie si cantó bien.
marianne sounds like she smoked 3 packs before this and bowie is sweating his balls off trying to keep in sync with her
The line is "We won't find out until we grow". I know that Bowie was coked out of his mind here, but what he sings doesn't make sense. By the way, my I am a big fan. My friends and I watched this as it was broadcast back in November 1973.
David didn't write the song, only covered the Sonny & Cher original. You know that, right?
marriane lear
freaks
Different from you eh?
This was cool?
Bowie at the time this was recorded had 5 albums in the UK top 40 at the same time, including 3 in the top 10, he also had 2 songs in the top 10. A month later he would debut "Pin Ups" at #1 and it would remain five weeks at the top, it was immense.
Dun duh dun duh!
Dun duh dun duh!
,they look great, sound great, but no chemistry
😂👹😈
Imagine the conservatives of today freaking out if a new artist performed something similar on network tv 😂 tHeY’rE tRyiNg tO gRooM oUr cHiLdReN!! Relax snowflakes ❄️ lol
- - - - - - the Dude is just weird, plain weird.
it’s david bowie…
What's with the nun nonsense? Trying to be edgy but it's just sad
LOL - Faithful - the cracked voice of smoking/alcoholism
They do sing it well, but those outfits! Just say no to drugs, kids! LoL
Why be normal 🥱
I would gladly go back to the 70's and the music.
The Flying Nun was a TV show that was very popular clealry this is an homage.
@@beartoffoli9820 Is it? I remember that show, if it was an homage that would be hilarious. What tells us Marianne Faithful is playing Sally Field's nun specifically? I am honestly curious, because without context, her as a nun along with Bowie draped with whatever roadkill that is, is so random and out there I can't help but wonder what gave them the ideas? 😂
It’s a Cleopatra parody, not the Flying Nun. The FN headwear had solid appurtenances that looked like mini wings on each side. Also, the design on the front is an ancient Egyptian symbol.
Poor Mick. Gringe worthy
why poor mick?
Lets not kid ourselves Marianne Faithful could not sing at this point.Even worse than Cher
witness a train wreck, bleccccchhhhh
I'm surprised so many of the responses are positive on this. Bowie does some typically good vocals, but outside of that, this is terrible! I admit I've never listened to much Marianne Faithful, but she sounds awful here. Probably the worst thing I've seen Bowie involved with.
It’s the epitome of the 70’s culture, all in one video.
You may not like the voice, but she’s in tune. In a world where Dylan made the charts, she was okay. I first heard her on Broken English. It’s fun to discover what was happening when I was looking elsewhere.
Awful.
so surprised David would sing such a lame song ... terrible choice from my POV
Bowie..... most overrated talent in the history of music 😂
Bowie at the time this was recorded had 5 albums in the UK top 40 at the same time, including 3 in the top 10, he also had 2 songs in the top 10. A month later he would debut "Pin Ups" at #1 and it would remain five weeks at the top, it was immense.
They should've left this crap deep in the vault. It truly SUCKS.
