I love Jeff’s whole vibe on this because it makes it very clear what he cares most about is the sport/community. He doesn’t act threatened (even when they are copying his stuff) and doesn’t sling grief their way. He is excited and hopeful AND humble about not knowing what he doesn’t know. This comes from someone who knows that talk is talk until you ride and put the talk through the gauntlet. I just have a lot of respect for him he didn’t take this opportunity to bash people. It’s like he’s so not full of himself and fearful of change that he sees opportunity, it’s in his eyes and facial reactions! Innovation, even if a bit shady, will keep pushing things to be better for everyone (and it’s your choice what personal risks you take to use any innovative product just FYI). Thanks Jeff!

I'm an electronic product designer and love their motor design. Exactly what I would have done. 👍
Likewise, the smaller stacked controller and split battery is what I would have done.
Their price point is excellent, assuming it is reliable and battery has quality cells not china cheap garbage cells.
All in all it is a F.M killer, I think the mad king will be reaching for his fiddle right about now...
The only thing that bothers me at this point it REALLY looks like vapourware, there are no real photos of the hardware only CGI, so it could likely be that they want to get enough pre-order cash first, BEFORE they actually start making any parts.
Personally I would not be giving them a cent until i see video of a real controller, real rails, and ESPECIALLY a real motor. Until then, consider this to be something like a dodgy kickstarter, and dont send any money until they have lots of real stuff to show. Dont be the sucker who pays them the money so MAYBE they get enough of your money to EVENTUALLY start making something... 🤔

I have no doubt China can make a product superior in every way and make it cheaper. I think they just took everything that was the eventual plan for Future Motion, but at this point, there isn't much more room for a bigger motor. FM is in a losing battle. Certain business models just do not work in the US I'm afraid. We see this in EUC's as well. Not a single mainstream EUC manufacturer in the US. The laws are too harsh on PEV's.

Jeff must know some things about the drone industry lol, he hit the nail on the head with the split controller. In the drone industry about 4 years ago they started making flight controllers that stacked on top of the 4in1 esc with a pushpin design similar to this, but the problem with that was after a few crashes the solder holding the pins would crack and the esc would stop communicating with the flight controller. The motor is an amazing design, but that controller will be a problem eventually IMO.

19:53 FM and FW should add a key fob to activate and deactivate their board. I have one on my CBXR and it is great! There's certainly a separate conversation to be had about ripping off IP, however I (and I assume many others) am breathing a huge sigh of relief that there is at lest *something* else for riders to consider, other than FM boards. Especially because an alternative manufacturer, if it's a serious and commited one, would finally push FM back in line. @stespin ปีที่แล้ว +2

To be completely honest: I love Onewheel, I love their products, I love my Pint that has been a loyal companion for almost 2.000 miles with no issue whatsoever.
But, given the pricing of current OW products, given how they are behaving with the whole in-house-only repair policy on the GT and many other little things I really didn't like from them, I'd say that a bit of competition would do nothing other than benefit us as consumers. They played alone for long enough, now they really need 1 or 2 serious competitor to put them back in line.
If what's in that video is at least partially true, at that price tag, it may be the start for the first one.

    • @stespin
      @stespin ปีที่แล้ว

@@audihere4978 That is a fair point of view, no doubt they would do a better job. But what about the prices? I'm from Italy, shipping alone would cost more than the repair. (Buying from here from FM site means paying whatever you buy +3-400$ shipping)
And aside from the quality of repairs, I think it's a matter of ownership. I bought THEIR product, yes, but I paid for it and now it's MINE, every single part of it down to the last screw. How dare they put a killswitch that destroys MY board if I (for whatever reason that doesn't not concern FM) detach the battery?
That's what I meant with competition, with a serious competitor (especially a fully moddable one) they wouldn't be able o get away with shit like that.

No coincidence the board is stacked as all the new EUC's have stacked boards. I wouldn't worry to much about the BMS. If it's anything like the EUC manufactures they love feedback from the community to make adjustments for firmware updates. If this starts out half as good it will either end FM or FM will change. This is the reply I got from floatwheel - "the ghosting sensitibity is a variable that can be tuned in the VESC firmware, basically you can define how much longer do you want the motor to stay engaged after you dismount the sensor, that will help your air time with the board."

This is the best thing that could happen. It will force FM to continue to get creative with new designs to compete with other designers like this company. That’s how cars came so far , having to stay on top with just bringing the onewheel higher on the food chain. (Hopefully).

Can FM actually do anything to Floatwheel given that they are in China?
I used to work at Boa (the lace system) and we had trouble bringing IP violation actions against the copycat companies that operated out of China. I believe the reason was that China just doesn't care to do anything about foreign IP violations.

  • @SeanPaulNotTheSinger

It's certainly interesting to see a (near) direct competitor hit the market. I've some concerns with some of the claims and also how well the VESC based system will be, along with how upgradable it will be, considering how disconnected they seem to be from the VESC community (by all accounts I've heard so far, if I'm wrong, correct me, please).
I think that VESC alone would force FM to take steps to up their game with the app and digital shaping, and allowing more advanced custom shaping, but having a direct competitor that is fully repairable across the board, indeed you can buy each part ala carte, which is amazing. I'm still looking for a flat footpad for the front only for the GT... I don't want to buy a complete set.
Regardless, I'll be taking a wait and see approach for this one. If they do come out and are even close to as awesome as they are claiming, well, then I'll be getting one for a pure trail board (after allowing VESC to get more refined in the intervening months). I've already been eyeballing VESC as something to do with my Growler, because reasons. In the meantime, I'll be like The Dude, and abiding.

These sound great on paper... VESC based, 6" go kart compatibility, more power, etc. I'd want to see opinions 3+ months after people get their hands on them and what sort of issues there may be. I've had a Pint X as my first PEV since November 2021 or so. I have an itch to get something else, but unsure about a GT. Lack of real right to repair from FM is a major downer. I know you can throw a VESC based controller in the GT, but something that has it from the start is more appealing. Especially if you can get something with an Enduro already mounted.
I did put a Burris treaded tire on my Pint X and it was too bad, but not a huge fan of voiding the warranty on a new board either.

FM doesn't appear to have really invented the one wheel concept as most can clearly see from this 15 year old video th-cam.com/video/HGbbag9dklU/w-d-xo.html where someone else did it first successfully. So to me it seems that FM just wants to prevent competition through expensive litigation; therefore, it makes sense for Floatwheel to avoid this conflict until they are ready. In the meantime, I hope the community at large benefits from their efforts to improve on the "balancing scooter/skateboard" as the original innovator called it.

  • @JohnEFly
    @JohnEFly ปีที่แล้ว

On the motor and top speed thing, it's important to note that the motor they are showing is much larger than the Future Motion motor. They also state it has significantly stronger magnetic flux. this means that the motor is a much lower kv rating than the future motion hypercore. Which means that at a given voltage, this motor would actually free spin slower than the future motion motor. However, it would make significantly more torque at a much lower current. The increased voltage of the battery then raises the free spin speed of the motor again so it can be faster than the hyper core. But just because it's a higher voltage and larger motor doesn't mean it can go faster. It should have WAY more torque though.
Honestly, if their claims are true I would be way more excited about a motor with similar top speed to the GT but could mob up hills like an EUC.

Well VXwheel 3 had 1/5 of the battery in front before them still fitting Lfoc3, but that's not the point. I wanted to say that the split pack system works as good as one rear pack performance wise if done properly. Next thing is a bit more equaly distributed weight. Still way heavier tail, but with that many cells it's only a good thing to distribute a small part in front. I like my board beign a bit less tail heavy. If that's all user and service friendly, that's another story but again IF done properly I see no disadvantage.
There is a lot of technical questions getting in my mind after the promo video, but it's just too soon to comment much more before we see how good they did their job.
For sure this is a big potential for people wanting to experience the freedom of VESC without needing all the DIY skills. Maybe even a lot more.

What patent is being violated exactly? Future Motion does NOT have a defensible patent on just about any of their technology. Even the main technological innovation, the basic idea of a one wheeled self-balancing board, is owned by Dean Kaman and Deka Research!
Not only does Future Motion NOT have IP to protect here, at any point Dean Kaman could put them under simply by enforcing his IP.
People keep making this patent infringement argument, but never seem to back it up with specifics.
So again, I ask anyone, what exact patent is being claimed to be owned by FM?
    Please cite actual patent numbers.

I'll ignore the knock off rails and other things, but got some concern:
    - For power dissipation, voltage is not an issue. It's actually a benefit, the higher the voltage, the lesser the current for a same power demand (P=UxI). The problem is the current, and contrary to the formula before, heat generation is following the square of the current (P=RI²). So we will see in hot weather like California if their design is actually flawless on this side. Higher voltage level could be an issue for the motor insulation, but I assume they took that into consideration.
    - Using the stator as a heatsink, I'm not sure man. This means that hot air is going to circulate between the hub and the motor, which will result in tire pressure increase. It's already the case due to the friction of the tire on the road for example. So friction + hub heatsink ? I don't know.
    - I assume FM thought about splitting the battery. We all remember what a mobile object does to the controller box (ferrite ring). How are those cells held in the controller compartment ? Is it that sturdy that it can take multiple drops on the concrete if you practice noseslides or something else ? Is it also really worth it ?
    - They mention that the rear battery pack cells are closer to each other, which is a freakin red flag when it comes to heat dissipation of the battery pack.
    - I think the stator comparison is deceiving on purpose. 10mm more in height should not be that big of a difference, but the image says otherwise. On top of it, they have an axle which is, in this case, way bigger. So the increase size of the stator, is it for flux, or bigger axle ?
All in all, seems too good to be true. I need a TFL stamp on that one, otherwise that's a nogo for me.

I get pushback on my XR at about 16mph, I have no doubt it would nose drop if I pushed passed that for too long. I'd say if they put it to vote most riders would want the option to go much faster at least to eliminate the nose-dive risk. If there was any competition that made a faster version of the onewheel id sell XR in a heartbeat and buy it.
